The difference between a yellow and red card should be determined by the fact of it being either intentional or careless as opposed to accidental. The fact that another player was involved does not make it any less punishable
i think it was the level of danger involved. Face to face is pretty much an unintentional head butt, dangerous for both players, so careless. The other one was shoulder to side of face. The result of getting sandwiched. Neither intentional or careless, and less dangerous.

In the men's game a red card is 20 mins and they can replace the player, not that that deserved a red card. If they weren't down a player (key player) this would have been another half century or worse. Really proud of you girls

much of what folks are describing as the US playing better in the first half especially was actually absolutely abysmal refereeing- I'm not arguing the red card, it was in the end a fair call although the yellow for the US for a similar offense, downgraded from red because a second tackler was considered mitigation which in fact it was not as it did not cause the ball carrier to significantly drop in height nor did it impede the angle and sight of the offending tackler, should also have been red- however the US were constantly allowed to be offside and often entered mauls from the side which was similarly ignored- indeed the second US try, from a so-called "quick tap" by the US #7, wasn't even tapped (see minute 4:21 on this video), and ref missed it- that being said, Ruahei was certainly the steadying influence needed before halftime and the senior players subbing in certainly made the difference, but too important experience gained for the starting lineup not least "guess what, we're a player down, deal with it"
US international rules based order i.e. opposing player gets red card for accidental head contact while US player gets yellow card for intentional shoulder charge.
I thought Chelsea Bremner was an unsung hero. She made a lineout steal, made a huge difference in the power of the scrum (locks provide much of the pushing power in a scrum) and made a lot of hard yards carrying the ball. I notice the scrum victories started coming for NZ once the 1st choice forwards came off the bench.
I don't want to sound like I am mansplaining anything but I do know a little about tackling. Your traps and shoulders and arms are what you should use for tackling... You pick a style of tackle you want to do with those tools, and then you execute that tackle while getting your head out of the way. I understand that often you only get a split second to decide what tackle you want to try, but every option should include you getting your head out of the way.
That yellow was a bit odd. The NZ player was actually rising. I can't see how that would be a mitigating factor. Had the other tackler not forced the ball carrier up, it would have been square on the temple.
Why world rugby not bringing in the 20 minute red card is beyond me, it's been trialled at the highest level and so many red cards are completely unintentional.

It's only a rugby indicent of either player changes direction at a speed or time that makes the reaction almost impossible. That's the mitigating factor. Had the player been falling in the tackle, I'd then call it a rugby incident.

The USA need to incorporate the substantial attacking threats of the sevens girls after the Olympics. Naya Tapper, Sammy Sullivan, and offload queen Ilona Maher would give this team some much needed strike players.

The D1 elite All American team every year are basically an All Poly team. Select them. Too much politics and favoritism in the selection process
