+InfiniteIdeas My only complaint about this show is that I have to pause 30 times per episode to laugh at every single joke because they're all bloody good.
I think Square took away her emotions just so she wouldn't complain about the outfits she's supposed to wear. It's at that point they might as well replace Lightning with a mannequin.
This doesn't change the fact she commented once to Hope how much she hates the Mi'Qote garb when you got it through a sidequest. If that's not emotions or feelings, then we're all duped.
Teddie Sage It doesn't take emotion to know when you look like a furry's wet dream. If she had taken a stand and said, "No, Hope! This is where I draw the line. I am not wearing this thing." then you'd have a case. Is a casual comment about an unpractical outfit really what you think emotion sounds like?
MunkyDrag0n Technically speaking any sort of "casual comment" that portrays like or dislike would be considered emotion. She could say she will not wear it because it is not practical, though.
So, God took away all of Lightning's Emotions... Does that actually do anything? 'Cause I've seen clips of FFXIII 1 and emoting wasn't exactly something Lightning...Did.
That's not true! She got pissed at Snow that one time and punched him! And then she got pissed at Hope for not having the mental fortitude of a man twice his age! And then she got pissed at Sazh for having the gall to question her motives! And then she got pissed at Barthandelus for imitating her sister! Come to think of it, being pissed was Lightning's only emotion after all...
Wait... If all of her emotions are gone... Then there would be literally no character development! Square Enix took the one thing it was striving to be good at and chucked it out the window!
+Ryan Monaco The sad thing is, lacking emotions wouldn't have prevented character development. We have Flowey, Collette from Tales of Symphonia, Presea who is also from there...basically you can do it, but the lack of emotions needs to be part of the problem. If you take the realistic route like Toby Fox did, it's just adapting. You can also have them learn emotion. We even have Yandere-Chan, who becomes addicted to the only three emotions she can feel: Lust (which she believes is love), Rage, and Joy (which she only gets when she is currently murdering someone in at least three simultaneous ways). The addiction leads to everything you do. Of course, this is Square Enix. That means character development went extinct years ago. Sorry Galuf, Square Enix forgot you ever existed. No, literally. They thought Aerith was the first time that happened. Every FF game with named characters did that back then, and we have Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, and Chrono Trigger, where the MAIN PROTAGONIST can potentially die for good MIDWAY THROUGH THE GAME.
Kevyn The DevylMan That's Chara. Flowey has established in the Genocide Route that he is physically incapable of emotion and has actually tried to feel.
It's pretty much a staple at this point. I was playing Tales of Xillia and defeated it's equivalent of god. I put the controller down expecting the final cutscene to roll then credits. NOPE! CONGRATS BITCH YOU'RE GOIN TO ANOTHER DIMENSION! HAVE FUN! I then played an additional 3 hours of gameplay. This was after the game already faked me out before with a scene that felt incredibly like a proper point to close the book. Sure the victory is bitter sweet but it was still a good space to end.
If I remember correctly there was an episode of game theory that addressed this. To sum up their theory, it's a Buddhist vs Christianity thing. Let your mind, body, and soul drift away into blissful peace and nirvana as you plunge your weapon of choice into the incorporeal flesh of a divine entity, rending the awkward incarnation of whatever domain that deity governed into oblivion, thus restoring the balance of the universe. Just don't think about it.
Well, I guess that's just the easiest way to give people, what they expect. After 50 hours of an epic RPG it would be somewhat boring, if the final boss was just a random office worker, that you have to beat in arm-wrestling. So instead you have to fight the most powerful entity in the universe. But then again it's not like this whole "Let's kill god or some guy with godlike powers"-thing would only appear in JRPGs. Just think about stuff like Dragon Age, God of War, Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy, Risen or Dark Souls.
True, but it can feel incongruous with the story we've set up. Imagine beating said office worker in arm wrestling then he reveals that he's been possessed by a god-like deity and goes Super Saiyan. That's what it feels like sometimes.
Honestly, a story about a Faustian bargain where the protagonist surrenders their emotions to revive a lost loved one (and then can no longer appreciate or feel for that person when they do earn them back) could potentially be really interesting... if it was intentional.
Especially if said resurrected loved one is completely horrified at what their LO did to bring them back, and at the heartless monster their LO has become to achieve their goals, bonus points if the ressurectee mounts a campaign to kill the person who resurrected them because they’re no longer the same person they were if they’re not able to feel _anything,_ and they’ve now become the classic super evil heartless villain of most JRPGs. That could actually be a really interesting storyline. You spend the first half of the game developing character 1s skill set and powers to achieve their goal of resurrecting character B, and get progressively more evil the more of your emotions you lose because you can’t feel guilt if you can’t _feel,_ (screw points if you sacrifice a close personal friend of 1 and 2 in the process) and then the second half of the game is spent playing as character 2 fighting to put their loved one down as a part mercy kill part revenge mission against someone you once truly loved but who is now a husk of who they used to be
The "limited time before the world end" aspect of this game makes me think that SquareEnix looked at Majora's Mask and said "hey we can do this even better!".
Which is chill and all, except when the humans are boring, white-washed, poorly explained, dull, the plot is odd and sounds quickly written, and the gameplay is the same from the last game plus a couple of bells and whistles. Plus, the time clock? Hated it. Hated MM's too. I do not like time clocks,
Charlie Knowsall The thing of a Time Limit is kind good at my opinion, because it removes the trope of "The World is gonna End? TIME FOR SIDEQUESTS!" which i hate sometimes. The history is kind "Meh", but i enjoyed while playing.
This is Lightning Returns in one sentence: It's the best Final Fantasy... of the 7th generation, which, depending on your stance of the series as a whole, is either a good thing or a bad thing.
I enjoyed the original Final Fantasy XIII way more than LR ... At least the story was somewhat motivating and the characters except for hope were fun. LR everyone is a bland mess, which didn't click with me. The combat is dull, graphics are lazy, dialogue is repetitive and screams exhibition. Final Fantasy XIV is a good game, ARR not the original. Imo the original XIII is the "best" of the trilogy, which as a whole wasn't up to par with the older Final Fantasy's mind you. IMO this generation XIV, XIII, XIII-2, LR. Imo the last superb Final Fantasy was XI and if you don't count MMO's then X. I never understood why SE was so full of the XIII saga ....
koosjuh75 Honestly, I think they were marketing the game towards female gamers. Think about it. Lightning is on the boxart of all three games, even though you only spent 10 minutes playing as her in XIII-2. Hell, she's the front character in the Dissidia 012 boxart.
Actually dude I completely agree but I think this kind of started with X and then X-2. I had a Final Fantasy fan website from 1998 untill 2004. And I actually noticed that when Final Fantasy X more females came to my site. It was still like 75% guy and 25% girl but before that it was 90/10. :X So yea I agree that SE has been trying to broaden their demographic.
>shitning wants cloud to embrace jesus >if she succedes sarah will be brought back >cloud is hung up about sarah dying >but if he joins then sarah will be brought back >but sarahs dead im sad 10/10
I imagine the people in Japan argue that the only reason Final Fantasy XIII (and others exist) is because people in North America love it so much... making this like a sit com plot of, "I thought you were the one that like it... but you thought I was the one... oh teh noes zaniness!"
Katrina Payne It could be argued that she has no character traits other than angry, boring and impulsively stupid. _Killing god will end the world? Pack the hunting rifles guys! Lets go kill us a god!!_
Katrina Payne It's not half as interesting as I made it sound unfortunately. Otherwise I would've found it funny and given it a pass. She's more like the lazy ass teen who lacks any kind of emotion other than obvious boredom with occasional outbursts of violence.
Lightning is a flat and character who if replaced by a talking box would be more interesting. Only redeeming quality is the pink hair that probably bleached her brain.
Considering they went to lengths to increase her visual appeal (I still remember when they made a big deal of the bust-size increase she got for that third FFXIII game), I'm surprised not many call SE out on their bullshit. She was an attempt to reproduce the mass appeal Cloud had, neglecting the fact that Cloud became popular over several years and cameo appearances; he wasn't force-fed to people the way Lightning was. Wasa supposedly liked her, which would why Kitase was allowed to make three games about her instead of devoting money and time to more worthy projects (seriously, if a game like Bioshock had been panned the way the first FFXIII was, Bioshock II and Infinite would have never ben made). Like a seiken densetsu/Mana game that isn't shit, or maybe a SaGa game that doesn't scare everyone the way Unlimited SaGa did.
I can't help but think that if God really is as he says, then why doesn't he just move them there himself, or if he can't since he's busy building the world or something equally silly as an all powerful being, why doesn't he just create the people again in the new world? After all, a God is meant to be omniscient, so he has no excuse for not knowing them. If he's not, what sort of God is he? That or lightning went mad, which seems alot more plausible.
yeah this whole omniscient god bullshit is only present in a few religions... most gods of the old world... and i mean a lot older than those omniscient god bullshit religions, were not omniscient also lighting didnt went mad... the writers at square just got lazy...er or even more retarded... most likely both
All that's explained in the game, but of course no one bothers to get that far, and if they do they usually don't care to know by then. The plot holes get a lot smaller, though I'll admit it's not easy to get all the facts. SE's exposition could have been a lot better.
Dude don't you know you're not supposed to question god even when his actions don't make any sense? He works in mysterious ways and us mortals are just supposed to go with it.
catboy9653 I preordered it Just beacuse Well I finished the other 2 FF13 minds aswell Get the Fucking ending Right Im not Overjoyed about it I actually Liked FF13 It's Cambat for one was turnbased Something Done right AKA FF 7 8 9 10 Style The whole Time aspect is bullshit beacuse the Fights take way too long And the quests are just total bullshit GO here do this Wait here ALl the while Hope is screaming at you "LIGHTNING THERES ONLY 4 DAYS LEFT" BLAH BLAH "YEah i know hope but im sitting here waiting for my Quest target to Finish Shopping So i can complete this quest"
Actually enjoyed this game enough to invest time in beating the end game optional big bad dragon boss, but I didn't play the other two...Seriously tho, how can you not notice the correlation between Chaos Zones and those mobs that were kicking your ass? It's a huge black field of mist with it's own music that powers up enemies inside of it lol. Just don't fight in Chaos Zones at the start of the game xD
That doesn't explain why they paid all that extra money to have it translated and shipped to western audiences. If Japanese gamers and only Japanese gamers like it, then it would have been a Japan only release, like the other 50% of their product that you only find exclusively on their Japanese site.
funny thing is the old FF games had more emotional scenes in three hours than this drivel could have in twenty. the old characters made us laugh, made us cry and most of all THEY FELT REAL. No amount of cgi pre rendered garbarge can ever come close to it.
Possibly one of my biggest emotional scenes was in FF7, in the Ancient's City at the end of the first disc, not spoiling anything for the rare person who might not have played or heard about it.
joseph linden To each their own, I will say that most of the FF games before 8 were pretty good, despite the grinding almost all of them had. They had a huge open world and tons of hidden goodies in them, and great storylines, especially 6 and 7. FF8 is where I felt they started going down the Final Hallway path slightly, though some might argue.
3000meganerd I personally thought 8, 10 and 12 were great. The ones between those games, however, were garbage. It would seem that Square Enix is sticking to the pattern now, 14 being judged the best MMO of 2013 and all.
tiakpark It's kind of a bit more like Team Fortress or Loadout to me with everyone having there own types of weapons and it being a third person cartoon looking shooter.
LOL, seriously? and here I am, not wnating KH3 because I didn't liked the musical numbers (not a bad game, just... too much Disney for me). And I really hope you're right, I can even begin to feel the pain of the haters, seeing their precious work "ruined forever and ever" mmm, tastes like chicken.
guardiansparks I... am at loss for words, I guess SE is really going top speed. But that is not a complete buying point for me, unless I somehow manage to understand the lore of the KH series (and when considering how unearthly lazy I am), anyway, I'm off to get my BBQ sauce.
A common misconception. what actually happened is the game was going to be named "Fighting Fantasy" but someone already used that name. So Sakaguchi decided to name it "Final Fantasy" because he wanted a game where its title could be abbreviated to "FF" because "FF" in japanese is fun to say, or something.
"Will give you wealth and servitude if you bow down." "Will 'allow' you death and eternal torment by a conveniently unassociated third party if you don't." I can't see how that could be construed as easy villain material.
Omar Guillen There's always the Mother series of jRPGs, which pits your 12-year old team of psychic kids against robots, zombies, hostile men's room signs, and alien orphans-turned-Satan.
SSJ3MJ says: "Suprise, suprise. Yahtzee hates another good JRPG, what a shock." No, he's not hating a *good* RPG - see? He hates THIS GAME, which is bad. Bad does not equal good. Oh, and it's "surprise." Got another "R" in there. By the way, not everybody who doesn't like the video games you like only plays Call of Duty and nothing else. Not sure why you had to be told this.
And if Yahtzee's opinions didn't bother him then he wouldn't feel the need to defend it on the internet. I've met people online who didn't like Kingdom Hearts and I brushed it off,
Appreciate that, Joseph. SSJ3MJ, I'm going to save us all some time here by acting out the next few lines. SSJ3MJ: I'm not a fanboy! Yahtzee is just TEH BIAZ! Someone else: You uh, do see the obvious flaw with talking about bias when it comes to opinions about video games, right? Here's a hint: We all have biases. All of us. Every person on the planet. SS: But FF is goo, if only Yahtzee wasn't TEH BIAZ he could see how objectively great JRPGs are! Someone else: Do you know what the words "subjective" and "objective" mean? SS: Well Yahtzee just thinks all JRPGs suck! Someone else: He has already stated that he approaches games from the perspective that the game is bad until it can prove itself good. All games. Not just JPRGs, ALL GAMES, of all genres. And if the developers fail to make a game that he enjoys, how is that his fault? You do know that he does enjoy some JRPGs such as FFVII and Earthbound, right? Okay, so having saved us several days of back and forthiness, how about we start wrapping this up, eh?
Yeah we can finally play as Lighting, the best character of FF, and battle with her and..... nevermind fu*k this game I am just gonna eat my pie (short pause) tning returns.
OHHHHHH NOOOOO. He hasn't seen the ending, bless his soul. This game would be in a bucket of shit under a pile of dead Nazis if he knew what the ending was like. He needs to know. *He neeeeeeds to know.*
Did the world end killing every character making it impossible to make another sequel, that's the only possible outcome I can see that would make things better.
Very very close on that prediction actually! No what happens is that the world get remade as our world! And you wonder why everybody thinks every FF game after VII is shit...
Spahce Not to get into a drawn-out argument, but most people agree the cut-off point for FF still being good is either IX or X. Personally, I think IX is better than VII which wasn't perfect and I like X a whole lot. Yahtzee on the other hand only likes FF before VII. Anyways, that does sound like a retarded ending to a retarded sub-series of FF. Glad it's over now...hopefully.
tiakpark What people fail to understand is that the reason people hate FF now is because it isn't any good, not because it's the "cool" thing to do. And the blind, diehard fans will defend it to the end. I feel sorry for them, I really do. They're the kind of people that grew up with it, and refuse to accept that it's nothing but amazing to preserve the memory.
just gonna give my thoughts on this game: i liked this game. i found the the combat interested and fun and thought the schemata system worked very well. the outfits were all varied and only a few were actually designed for fanservice which is a good point for me since lightning isnt that kind of character to me. the weapon variation was pretty good as well each having a different look and having a ton of to buy or unlock and the same goes for shields. the story wasnt amazingly interesting it did its job of telling one and thats what matters. the time system was annoying but its very easily manageable and reminded me of majoras mask which is one of my favorite games. the games graphics looked great on my hd tv and the cutscene after the credits is THE most realistic looking cutscene in video games of this generation so far. you can hate the game all you want and thats fine but that wont stop me from enjoying 13-2 and lightning returns if i ever play them again. 1 was kinda a chore to play as i quit playing after a couple days my first time playing and picked it up again years later as i felt i needed to beat it to fully analyze the series as a whole and get a full opinion on it. 13-2 was a great improvement when it came to gameplay and story but lacked playable characters as having 2 limited your options more. i can easily say i enjoyed played 13-2 and lightning returns alot and think they are both great games. are they the best? of course not as my favorite game of all time is ffx(number 1 since childhood). they are both great games worth of praise for what they did right and not a ton of hate for the little things they did wrong. thats just my opinion so take it or leave it i dont care as nothing will change my mind that i had fun playing a fucking video game.
3:01 Yes. You really should have played FFXIII-2; it was something else entirely in terms of gameplay, combining the beat-em-up and doom-esque first person shooter genres, and Duke Nukem, Gordon Freeman, and Jesus showed up. Everyone had their tits out.
Simply amazing how quickly the fanboys will flock together to defend their precious widdle game instead of accept the obvious fact that not everyone likes their precious widdle game. Or the fact that no amount of comments on the video will change Yahtzee's perception.
If he found the game so boring/unplayable/tedious/plot hole heavy/otherwise broken that he couldn't stomach more than 3 hours, that sounds to me like Square Enix kinda failed at making a good game. And it's not like they have an excuse given the ridiculously long conga line of crap games they've been making lately; I mean, are they just so tired of making good Final Fantasy games that they're deliberately looking for ways to make each one worse than the one before it? (FF XII, XIII XIV and FF: All the Bravest come to mind right off.) I sure can't think of any other reason why their only good games as of late are the freaking remakes of the ones that they relased years ago which were already established to be good. When you add in the fact that they stubbornly refuse to give FF7 the remake treatment, in their own words, "until a new FF game beats it in quality", we may as well wait for the seventh Game of Thrones book or the expansion pack for Half Life 5! If you want to ignore his review simply because he didn't complete the game, for reasons he already went into in depth, that is entirely your choice but he's a game critic and he criticized the game. Because that's what game critics do.
***** Three hours is kind of a good amount of time to get a feel for a game. In fact, I can't think of any game that started off shit and surprised me part way through it.
Ishkaga02 XII? XII? Are you KIDDING me? XII is TERRIBLE (speaking devolves into mumbling gibberish) ...and the game is just BAD. JK I haven't even played it for an hour but I cannot STAND the characters, Well, Gabranth is pretty cool, actually. Ugh I really hate XII...
Hey Sqenix (Yes I know none of you will read this but your fans will and that's all I need to make some crazed fanboy scream at their monitor in rage) You guys know how you said that you would only even CONSIDER making a remake of Final Fantasy VII if you released a game that surpassed it in quality? Let's just say I'm not holdin' my breath on this one.
Jack Channel But DAMN am I hoping that that game's good, if it's not then Final Fantasy might become the M Night Syamalan of video game series (starts great, degrades into absolute self-obsessed garbage).
Muted Redead NAH COMPARE TO 13, FF 12 ISS A FUCKING MASTER PIECE, THE ONLY DOWNSIDE ARE THE MAIN CHARACTER VAAN AND THE STORY. Too much Politic for my taste but is good and the HUNTS are AWESOME if you know what are you doing....Is good.
FUCK, I actually never made it that far my memory card got corrupted and when i played the game in ps3 fat some years ago guess what, yellow light of dead so havent even BEAT that game with ff 1 2 and 3 is the only ff game (In the numerical order beside 13 XP) that i didnt finish ( My english is bad)
I've heard a lot of complaints about FFXIII and its spinoffs but they seem mostly opinionated. Just because you didn't like it and other people enjoyed it doesn't mean it's a terrible game as no game is perfect and every game is flawed. Plus, they keep making them because Japan seems to enjoy FFXIII. We're not the only ones who buy FFs so they can't just lean towards one side of the spectrum to all complainers as they're probably more positive feedback than negatives ones...or ones that just say the game sucks.
No the problem is they keep trying to 'westernize' their games to appeal to the much larger market outside Japan. Problem is rather than getting actual data, they look at sales numbers and make some basic generalizations based on those numbers to decide how their game should work. And very few seem to have caught on that isn't how to latch on to western gamers. Example, western audiences praised previous FF games for their innovations to old playing systems. Their solution? Innovate for the sake of innovation until you have an innovated, unplayable mass.
and no japan doesnt like FFXIII because they loved the original FF series, I live there now and not one good review in japan either so yeah worldwide this game sucks and the spinoffs etc.
Not sure why you feel the need to defend Sqenix. Sqenix is a big boy, he can defend himself if he cared to. Obviously given the constant drivel we've been given these last several years he doesn't.
***** Well considering TB says that his "WTF" videos are just "first impressions" and not reviews and to do them he plays the game for at least 4-5 hours I'd say you were wrong. Putting 5 hours into a game that is 20 hours long and calling it a review is bogus. It's a first impressions. If you disagree that's fine but to be honest it doesn't help your case when you don't give a cogent argument and start off name calling.
***** You missed the part of my argument where I said playing a quarter of a game was not enough for a review and is a first impression. I didn't use TB as my argument I used him as an example. Learn to read before you start throwing around names like that. And I didn't say "glimpse" I said "first impression" which in terms of games is a segment of the game, oh say...a quarter. 5/20 hours. You don't play a game for a quarter of its total play time and go "I can review this now". Jog along.
***** I'm not making any claims. You are saying that games that "get better" are bad, and I'm citing examples where this isn't the case. Don't be so aggressive.
The world is ending, God gives you a mission, you have a time limit, and there's angst everywhere? Sounds like Final Fantasy trying to do what the Megami Tensei series did over a decade ago.
Could not have put it better myself.....though to be fair, my memories of Megami Tensei mostly recall punching demons, angels and annoying douchebags in the face, angst was only for side characters that would die anyway....
The story line does make sense, if you play the game for longer than 3 hours. For example Lumina preserved Lightning emotions, so she never lost her emotions.
That's the big problem here; Square Enix made a really shitty Final Fantasy game, and they had plenty of warning from the fans that this whole Final Fantasy XIII series was going to be a failure, yet they kept on with it. So it should be no surprise that this game feels like the plot is being forced, because this whole series was pretty much forced. I hope Square has learned its lesson and will stick with non-serialized Final Fantasy entries in the future.
They won't, of course, and cost is very much the reason why. When it comes to numbered Final Fantasy games, Square-Enix doesn't seem capable of doing anything small. It's always big on style, on graphical heft and artistic wonderment, and on the melodrama as well. Problem is, all of that costs butt-tons of money (save the melodrama, which is a standard part of any Final Fantasy package). In an effort to make their money back on the game resources, they are quite inclined to make some follow-ups. It's safe to look forward to Final Fantasy XV-2, XV-3, and possibly some subtitled version plopped onto a handheld as well.
Wow the amount of hate this video is getting in the comments lol. Its just one reviewers opinion. Not all opinions are the same. As a fan of Final Fantasy (primarily the older ones) and JRPGs in general, I don't see a problem with it other than maybe he should have finished the game first. But not everyone has the patience to beat a JRPG. They are usually long and if you don't like what you are playing, then you are more than likely going to stop playing it unless someone persuades you otherwise or you decide to give it a second chance later on. From what I have seen on Lighting Returns, it looks good in terms of its world, battles, and customization, but the time limit and story don't seem that appealing at all. Reviews are the opinion of one person, so you should never buy or not buy a game just based on their review alone. Look at gameplay, listen to peoples thoughts on it that have played it themselves, and do your own research on it. But for pete's sake don't rip someone apart for not liking the game.
I don't think you need to complete it before you can judge a JRPG at all. If you're not enjoying the journey, the destination probably wasn't worth the ride. All the JRPG's I've enjoyed I enjoyed pretty much the entire thing. I forced myself to complete FFXIII and XIII-2 despite thinking the first few hours were awful. At the end of both of them I felt I had wasted my time.
linkno1 That is totally understandable. I am the type of guy that likes to give things chances if its from a brand or franchise that I really like, but I do agree that it can feel like a waste of your time by the end of the game.
Look at it this way; now that Shitening Returns is out, Square Enix can finally bury the fucking trilogy and we won't have to see her pepto-bismol headed ass in another FF game again. But I'm not convinced they've learned from this experiment. Nope, not one bit.
While the story is negligible, I think the games combat system is still good. I can understand why people do have trouble with this game is because the lack of conveyance and the fact that getting into a Final Fantasy game is like trying to get into the most esoteric cult. Not many things make sense, there are words an individual has never heard before, and anything can either be intuitive or counter-intuitive. Seeing as how FF changes the combat system with each installment to the main franchise, I can confidently say that Lightning Returns has a real solid combat system that takes a lot of getting used to, but in the end, a seasoned FF veteran can see some similarities between previous titles, therefore making it enjoyable. On the whole, Lightning Returns along with any FF is a hard game to get into, but one would fine themselves enamored if they actually tried to stick with it. My only problem with this particular installment of the Fabula Nova Crystallis series is how there is a plethora of shameless fan service. I can understand that this is a staple for any JRPG, but it was barely present in the previous installments. Now, Lightning's bust has went up a size, and she shows more skins than a female in a Mortal Kombat game.
Yeah, I enjoyed the xiii games... Namely this one, but hey, some may dislike it, but as long as you, the player, is enjoying it, I suppose that's all that matters, to ourselves anyway.
Also Escapist, square enix wanted to do a spinoff because they felt like they needed a lightning centric game. She's the creators favourite character. Since when can a game company not create a game based on their own personal feelings? :P
The creator said Lighting was very successful and love by many people, so she will appear in other game as guest character or maybe more game about her. I wish creator shove his thumb up his arse, if they're going to center which game they will make next by character popularity then give us a fucking FF1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 remade!!!
I saw in a 30min-ish presentation that it was square enix themselves who loved lightning and felt like XIII-2 didn't give her the spotlight which wasn't what they wished for.
No, actually, they wanted to do a spinoff because they thought that would be their next big cash cow that the fans would flock to game stores for and thus began their next cynical, OVERLY focus tested (nothing wrong with focus groups, problem is when you OVERUSE them) bloated project that sacrifices quality and emotional experience. Seriously, unless Sqenix gets it together and changes direction, they'll be out of business in the next 5 years.
1981cbrinkm Hard to believe that SQEN will fall out of business, look at Capcom. They still stand even long time ago, news said they have only few million dollar left in their deposit.
The problem with this game was the SE was trying to make XIII be the next VII and thus kept pushing out sequels. The major thing that slipped their minds was that the majority of people loved the original VII and demanded more entires to expand it's universe. Now to quote Adam Jensen on what a good majority of fans thought of Lightning Returns "We never asked for this."
Yes the last good FF game was a scaled down copy of Golden Sun with every level as a lineir corador with maybe the odd switch at the end. It's the game we wish Dark Dawn was.
Point taken. I find the only FF game I've liked in reacent years was Four Heroes of Light. Because it played like a classic FF game, no QTEs or real time bs. Sure the story was vanilla but it was good vanilla. Bravely Default was bad gimick on bad gimick and anyone who rates it more than 6/10 is lying to themselves. It just reaks of a cash grab.
HEY HEY HEY NOW. No cheating mister! I know you were talking about how your friend had a ladyboner over it and you couldn't be bothered with the game, Edit your comment back >:c
I think that the only thing left to make the 500 year time skip actually effect the plot would be to make everyone stop caring that Sarah died. I think that if someone died 500 years ago and you're still alive through all those 500 years, then you would get over it! Even if a man lost his beloved son, and the son's last words were "I love you dad." I think 500 years later someone could say "Hey, what was your son's name again?" and the man would say "My wha- OH, right, I had a son... Uh, Johnny." I don't think that he'd be asked that while drowning his sorrows at a bar and break out in tears! I really think 500 years is long enough to get over any death!
Noble Alfred Well, to be fair, in the original FF7 he was confident, took charge and was actually kind of an ass, and despite having seen some shit in military life and losing a lot of what he cared about, still manages to be an ass. It were Kingdom Hearts and Advent Children who made him into the monotone emo he is today. Although i admit he's not as good as Terra or Zidane, but he isn't bad either. Not great, but taking home bronze at best. Also, Cecil from FF4 is also a really good character!
***** Never played FF 5(heard bad things) but FF 4 played on android, half way through phone screwed up, so I can't judge, from what I know from the half I played the story was somewhat serious so the chibi models weren't really helping. I know there are other good games in the franchise infact my second most favorite FF is 3 remake, it was very charming and I rate it just below my favorite which is 9. While 6 is really really good, I am not a fan of depressing stories. I find 7, 8 and 10-1,10-2 only decent, cause of.. ..reasons. 12 was fine.
I laughed for 5 minutes straight after the line "Make the plot holes bigger I don't think we can get this train wreck through it yet."
InfiniteIdeas My friend showed me this video and he had to pause it for a solid 5 minutes while I cried laughing at that line.
+InfiniteIdeas My only complaint about this show is that I have to pause 30 times per episode to laugh at every single joke because they're all bloody good.
I got crushed by the "replace God with Square Enix"
"Make the plot holes bigger, I don't think this train wreck can fit through them yet."
Best line ever. Gotta remember this one!
Teddie Sage
I honestly don't blame her for that one... My first order of business in 14 was to find an outfit that had pants when I started.
MunkyDrag0n
She sounded disgusted.
"did her Hooters dispense soft serve ice cream?" Might be one of my favorite lines either lol
Morafo Regnos Flowey has emotions. He's just a sociopath.
Kevyn The DevylMan That's Chara. Flowey has established in the Genocide Route that he is physically incapable of emotion and has actually tried to feel.
okay... square enix... when we said that we wanted lightning to strike twice with the final fantasy series.... this isn't what we had in mind.
I feel like every JRPG ends with you killing God or the local equivalent.
Tabula Rasa Gaming Then you just get a Zero Punctuation script thrown at you and get told to read it just like Yahtzee does.
Pie.
Tning.
Returns.
Gold.
Honestly, a story about a Faustian bargain where the protagonist surrenders their emotions to revive a lost loved one (and then can no longer appreciate or feel for that person when they do earn them back) could potentially be really interesting... if it was intentional.
Yeah if that was the main plot thread that could be a moving story about loss, the value of emotions and priorities. I'd play that game.
EnforcerX71 and failed miserably.
EnforcerX71 Or Valkyrie Profile
+EnforcerX71 And they forgot to add in a time travel thing.
+EnforcerX71 No you can't
Not to be "that guy", but the first Fallout did essentially the same thing over 20 years ago.
"Why is everyone so hung up on Serah? Did her hooters disperse soft serve ice cream?" My thoughts exactly!
Btw she kills god at the end lol
***** I wish he was lying. (although it's more a friendship soul.....blast/wave/burst of light)
But Final Fantasy is pretty much about this: Suprassing the human limitation and defying godly beings.
Jhon Main Bloodedge Which is fine. But I hated the logic behind switching your clothes in the middle of battle,
This is Lightning Returns in one sentence: It's the best Final Fantasy... of the 7th generation, which, depending on your stance of the series as a whole, is either a good thing or a bad thing.
I never understood why SE was so full of the XIII saga ....
chavaspada Agreed. - Justin
chavaspada I agree completely, that is if handhelds count.
koosjuh75 Honestly, I think they were marketing the game towards female gamers.
:X So yea I agree that SE has been trying to broaden their demographic.
>shitning wants cloud to embrace jesus
>if she succedes sarah will be brought back
>cloud is hung up about sarah dying
>but if he joins then sarah will be brought back
>but sarahs dead im sad
10/10
The side quests of this game are still some of my favorites in all games, seeing how people have reacted to centuries of life.
I imagine the people in Japan argue that the only reason Final Fantasy XIII (and others exist) is because people in North America love it so much... making this like a sit com plot of, "I thought you were the one that like it... but you thought I was the one... oh teh noes zaniness!"
*****
I'm starting to prefer Dragon Quest as well, heh.
The Japanese people I know who play Final Fantasy are all casual gamers. The ones who game regularly aren't very interested in it.
Katrina Payne
It could be argued that she has no character traits other than angry, boring and impulsively stupid. _Killing god will end the world? Pack the hunting rifles guys! Lets go kill us a god!!_
Blackemperess she sounds just like me. I lurve her so much for it.
Katrina Payne
It's not half as interesting as I made it sound unfortunately. Otherwise I would've found it funny and given it a pass.
She's more like the lazy ass teen who lacks any kind of emotion other than obvious boredom with occasional outbursts of violence.
I can't wait for final fantasy 69: when dolphins and chocobos flap.
make these plot holes bigger i don't think this train wreck's gonna fit through it yet
timebomb456, I'll get the butter.
golden quote
one question why is the game holding a minecraft pickaxe while opening up the plotholes but on the other hand why the hell not
"Did her hooters dispense soft-serve ice cream?"
ROFL!!
Anyone else finding themselves tempted to use the Yahtzee sprite at 5:05 as an avatar for something?
Because that is oddly cute as hell
No.
nah that would just be silly
lmfao
Lightning is a flat and character who if replaced by a talking box would be more interesting. Only redeeming quality is the pink hair that probably bleached her brain.
***** Little big planet interpretation?
***** sad think is that might sell
You know just replace Lightning with a Cybermen and you get the same result. Tought a Dalek would be more fun.... EXTERMINATE! EXTERMINATE!
you do realize that lightning is just a female cloud, right?
guess they thought lightning would strike twice.
+Frank Castle I'm not totally convinced it even struck once
Wait a minute, she knows what she's doing and why? That's mountains more coherent than the other FF13 games, a sad fact.
Still sucks though.
I cannot WAIT for his Stick of Truth review, too bad about Australia's censorship laws.
I bet there's a lot of Australians just waiting for Michael Atkinson to get kicked out of office.
Robby312
..............What do you mean? Nazi zombie or Taco bell? Both reasons seems posible for me.
"God's making a new world with blackjack and hookers" that bender reference killed me xD
Best joke to me was "Did her hooters dispense soft-serve ice cream?!"
Round Peg,
Square Enix!
"Pie-tning Returns" now THAT sounds like a game I would play!
Round peg in a Square Enix made me chuckle.
1:03 From here on out, I'm choosing to believe that this is *exactly* how Yahtzee spends his free time.
That or lightning went mad, which seems alot more plausible.
yeah this whole omniscient god bullshit is only present in a few religions... most gods of the old world... and i mean a lot older than those omniscient god bullshit religions, were not omniscient
also lighting didnt went mad... the writers at square just got lazy...er or even more retarded... most likely both
All that's explained in the game, but of course no one bothers to get that far, and if they do they usually don't care to know by then. The plot holes get a lot smaller, though I'll admit it's not easy to get all the facts. SE's exposition could have been a lot better.
kayzaac stop defending final Fantasy... It's not worth anymore
***** Sadly, this is as true as it gets. the "Final Fantasy" franchise "it's not worth anymore". All thanks be given to Motomu Toriyama.
Dude don't you know you're not supposed to question god even when his actions don't make any sense? He works in mysterious ways and us mortals are just supposed to go with it.
"Hope on a Rope" That fits my emotions for him perfectly.
I got the game yesterday and I love it so far!
so the stockholm has kicked in
catboy9653 thats the funnies damn thng ive ever heard. rare 2 actually see real wit in the comments lol
catboy9653
I preordered it Just beacuse Well I finished the other 2 FF13 minds aswell Get the Fucking ending Right Im not Overjoyed about it I actually Liked FF13 It's Cambat for one was turnbased Something Done right AKA FF 7 8 9 10 Style The whole Time aspect is bullshit beacuse the Fights take way too long And the quests are just total bullshit GO here do this Wait here ALl the while Hope is screaming at you "LIGHTNING THERES ONLY 4 DAYS LEFT" BLAH BLAH "YEah i know hope but im sitting here waiting for my Quest target to Finish Shopping So i can complete this quest"
catboy9653 Can I use that in the future? That was brilliant.
LordSaber yes
Actually enjoyed this game enough to invest time in beating the end game optional big bad dragon boss, but I didn't play the other two...Seriously tho, how can you not notice the correlation between Chaos Zones and those mobs that were kicking your ass? It's a huge black field of mist with it's own music that powers up enemies inside of it lol. Just don't fight in Chaos Zones at the start of the game xD
IN Conclusion, Don't buy the game, Buy 50-60 USD worth of Pie instead.
Yahtzee needs his own channel.
he has one! With loads of videos on it! Look up Yahtzee19 on youtube!
Yea I did, sadly I meant for his Zero Punctuation series.
The escapist channel works well enough to me! A lot of it is stuff that he does anyway, or things he works with Jim on!
SusanMcboot off topic, but why do you use so many exclamation points?
@@ewanfox6076 over punctuation
1:55
Is that... a Futurama joke?
YES
"Round peg in a square enix" I don't know why I found that so hilarious but I laughed so hard at that
dear complainers:
the only reason FFXII has continued this long is because in japan they like this series, just like we hate FFX-2 but they love it
Do you mean FFXIII?
That doesn't explain why they paid all that extra money to have it translated and shipped to western audiences. If Japanese gamers and only Japanese gamers like it, then it would have been a Japan only release, like the other 50% of their product that you only find exclusively on their Japanese site.
It's not that japan likes the FF13 series, they just like the character.
***** Probably. I've met quite a few people that think XIII is like, the greatest game of all time. Obviously haven't played a real FF game...
Actually I found X-2 to be pretty good. I...didn't try to follow the plot. But the combat mechanisms were cool.
Am I a terrible human being for possessing an inability to *not* laugh at the visuals for "hope on a rope"
funny thing is the old FF games had more emotional scenes in three hours than this drivel could have in twenty. the old characters made us laugh, made us cry and most of all THEY FELT REAL. No amount of cgi pre rendered garbarge can ever come close to it.
Possibly one of my biggest emotional scenes was in FF7, in the Ancient's City at the end of the first disc, not spoiling anything for the rare person who might not have played or heard about it.
i haven't played a ff game. I never will. It all looks like a pile shit.
joseph linden To each their own, I will say that most of the FF games before 8 were pretty good, despite the grinding almost all of them had.
Edge from FF2 was such an asshole, but I loved him for it.
What I'm wondering is how he'd find PvZ Garden Warfare. A franchise turned into a shooter by EA? Yahtzee will love to 'review' that one! c:
A casual tower-defense game now with chest-high walls you say?
tiakpark It's kind of a bit more like Team Fortress or Loadout to me with everyone having there own types of weapons and it being a third person cartoon looking shooter.
***** That actually sounds kinda cool. I love TF2.
So who all is looking forward to seeing Lightning in Kingdom Hearts 3? You know its going to happen regardless of how much you scream
Juan León Its alredy been confermed by the creater thow lightningdoes have a new desighn
guardiansparks I... am at loss for words, I guess SE is really going top speed.
But that is not a complete buying point for me, unless I somehow manage to understand the lore of the KH series (and when considering how unearthly lazy I am), anyway, I'm off to get my BBQ sauce.
I’m from the future, no Lightning in KH3.
Here's a bit of gaming history: Final Fantasy got its title from being Square Enix's last desperate attempt to avoid bankruptcy.
Sometimes I wonder if people should've let it happen.
16dw13 That's why I wonder. On one hand, some great games came from their existence.
On the other, angsty anime pretty boy douchebags.
not to avoid bankruptcy, but to go out with a bang.
also it was square soft
A common misconception. what actually happened is the game was going to be named "Fighting Fantasy" but someone already used that name. So Sakaguchi decided to name it "Final Fantasy" because he wanted a game where its title could be abbreviated to "FF" because "FF" in japanese is fun to say, or something.
These Final Fantasy games all have some crazy hangup against God
"Will give you wealth and servitude if you bow down."
"Will 'allow' you death and eternal torment by a conveniently unassociated third party if you don't."
I can't see how that could be construed as easy villain material.
KimonoBoxFox Do as I say or I'll hurt you. Yeah... that's fair.
John Beaird not saying it's weird. Just saying that they've used this theme so long that it kinda feels played out
Omar Guillen
There's always the Mother series of jRPGs, which pits your 12-year old team of psychic kids against robots, zombies, hostile men's room signs, and alien orphans-turned-Satan.
And I tough I was the only one noticing how the final bosses of VI, and VII were kind of suspicious.
1:11 omfg that picture ;_D
Crying of laughter!!!!!
SSJ3MJ says:
"Suprise, suprise. Yahtzee hates another good JRPG, what a shock."
No, he's not hating a *good* RPG - see? He hates THIS GAME, which is bad. Bad does not equal good.
Oh, and it's "surprise." Got another "R" in there. By the way, not everybody who doesn't like the video games you like only plays Call of Duty and nothing else. Not sure why you had to be told this.
And if Yahtzee's opinions didn't bother him then he wouldn't feel the need to defend it on the internet. I've met people online who didn't like Kingdom Hearts and I brushed it off,
***** you typed 6 more sentences. does that mean your butthurt has taken 30-40 minutes of your time now? because that's significant.
well guy this kid is a Japanese fanboy and i can tell just by his name the ssj3 is a reference to dragon ball z. Just so you know
Appreciate that, Joseph.
Ok what's good about them? What makes the characters special? What about gameplay?
"Sorry Lightning Returns, you lose to pie."
Yes. XD
Alan Lynch You're not wrong. It at least *SHOULD* kill off the Lightning inhabited part of the FF mythos.
I really like FFXII for the PS2. Best combat mechanism I've ever seen in a FF game.
just gonna give my thoughts on this game:
i liked this game. i found the the combat interested and fun and thought the schemata system worked very well. the outfits were all varied and only a few were actually designed for fanservice which is a good point for me since lightning isnt that kind of character to me. the weapon variation was pretty good as well each having a different look and having a ton of to buy or unlock and the same goes for shields. the story wasnt amazingly interesting it did its job of telling one and thats what matters. the time system was annoying but its very easily manageable and reminded me of majoras mask which is one of my favorite games. the games graphics looked great on my hd tv and the cutscene after the credits is THE most realistic looking cutscene in video games of this generation so far. you can hate the game all you want and thats fine but that wont stop me from enjoying 13-2 and lightning returns if i ever play them again.
Yahtzee should review FF VI, which he actually liked.
Man, Zero Punctuation uses a lot more punctuation now than it used to.
Correction: Replace God not with Square Enix, but with Motomu Toriyama, the David Cage of JRPGs.
"Talk about a round peg in a Square Enix"
I LOVE YOU YAHTZEE
ah yahtzee i love your hatred towards jrpg
"You don't say"
Love his nod to Futurama at 1:52.
Lightning Returns, huh? *takes out 3DS and starts playing Bravely Default*
1:51 Nice Futurama reference, made me laugh quite hard. XD
Christoph Brinkmann I actually loved XII. One of my favourite games ever.
D MAS Well that's your opinion, but I loved 12. Still one of my favourite games.
Yahtzee that round peg in a square-enix was brilliant and you deserve multiple awards in cinema for it
I'm probably gonna buy it and I feel horrible for doing that...
1:45 I have _NO IDEA_ why I keep laughing at this one scene!
Hey Sqenix (Yes I know none of you will read this but your fans will and that's all I need to make some crazed fanboy scream at their monitor in rage)
You guys know how you said that you would only even CONSIDER making a remake of Final Fantasy VII if you released a game that surpassed it in quality?
Let's just say I'm not holdin' my breath on this one.
'Fraid not. Sqenix made it clear: FF game only.
Jack Channel
But DAMN am I hoping that that game's good, if it's not then Final Fantasy might become the M Night Syamalan of video game series (starts great, degrades into absolute self-obsessed garbage).
Jack Channel # Believe
God, why wont RUclips and Facebook let me use hashtags ironically?
What about Bravely Default? It's not technically a FF game but it has all the same items and job classes.
I highly doubt that Sqenix would count that as their criteria for a game that surpasses FF7 in quality.
I saw a new zero punctuation on my feed and I was excited, then I saw it was final fantasy and all the excitement went away
That's a pretty good representation of Final Fantasy in general nowadays.
VICEGIRLS My thoughts exactly
Wallace Sampson HeY!!!! play the old final fantasy from X to 1. Thats it.
Innovate for the sake of innovation until you have an innovated, unplayable mass.
and no japan doesnt like FFXIII because they loved the original FF series, I live there now and not one good review in japan either so yeah worldwide this game sucks and the spinoffs etc.
sxylon kkl Famitsu gave it a 37. Granted, that's lower than XIII2, but that's not really a low grade.
Not sure why you feel the need to defend Sqenix. Sqenix is a big boy, he can defend himself if he cared to. Obviously given the constant drivel we've been given these last several years he doesn't.
I'm really starting to think that if final fantasy was on a Nintendo console no-one would care how long it's been dragged out
"When I reviewed Final Fantasy XIII I did so after only having played the first 5 hours..." That's not a review, that's a first impressions.
Jog along.
*****
Please convince me that Skyrim and Half-Life start off well. Please, please try to defend their inane intro sequences.
*****
I'm not making any claims. You are saying that games that "get better" are bad, and I'm citing examples where this isn't the case. Don't be so aggressive.
*****
Once again, I don't see what claim I made. I'm responding to your claim. Point out the claim I've made.
>God has also apparently taken away lightning's emotions.
Wait what? lightning has emotion? since when?
The world is ending, God gives you a mission, you have a time limit, and there's angst everywhere? Sounds like Final Fantasy trying to do what the Megami Tensei series did over a decade ago.
Could not have put it better myself.....though to be fair, my memories of Megami Tensei mostly recall punching demons, angels and annoying douchebags in the face, angst was only for side characters that would die anyway....
Except Megami Tensei did it right. They also tucked the angst into the side characters who were probably gonna die later that same afternoon.
whose still playing theses games?? who keeps buying them??? whose asking for them??????
bad people
JAPAN!!!!!!
Elagost Moogot KEEP IT THERE
fuck em
Final Fantasy is a good series...
Sounds like it was written as a bad fanfiction...
Sounds like it was written bad overall.
Sounds like the entirety of the FFXIII trilogy was a bad fanfiction.
The story line does make sense, if you play the game for longer than 3 hours. For example Lumina preserved Lightning emotions, so she never lost her emotions.
Luciferum the true god is Etro, who got killed.
Not really, the main audience they cater to are the Japanese.
+20 internet points to whoever knows the futurama reference.
"blackjack and hookers".......... actually forget the blackjack.. ehh screw the whole thing.
***** We'll make our own internet points with blackjack and hookers
Its from Bender, episode 2 of season 1.
I commented yet still alas my internet points are left adrift in a sea of nothing.
Wow, they still makes these?
"Hope on a rope" ... you have no idea how literal that statement is by the end of the game lol.
Square enix should just put all their attention into kingdom hearts 3 because that game will be fahking amazing
Like the Bender reference " Gods building a new world with black jack and h00kerz..."
Still not sure if Zero P is comedy with game journalism or the opposite.
REALLY!?! Another ffXIII GAME! Square was like "This is the most hated ff in the series! TWO SPINOFF GAMES!!!!!"
***** Just did, and oh god does it look terrible.
*****
FF XV : Lighting Returns Again!
Look at it this way; now that Shitening Returns is out, Square Enix can finally bury the fucking trilogy and we won't have to see her pepto-bismol headed ass in another FF game again. But I'm not convinced they've learned from this experiment. Nope, not one bit.
Blackemperess
Didn't the say she will be back in XV?
ImperialGuardsman74
What?!? Are you serious?!? God damn it! Well I know what I wont be buying.
I really hope he'll make the Thief review.
Next week in the Escapist website and 2 week in YT is my best guess.
Thief 2 is one of his favourite games of all time, and he retro-reviewed it at one point, so yeah, he will.
I'm hoping he will make a Dark Souls 2 review.
They still stand even long time ago, news said they have only few million dollar left in their deposit.
lightning returns had a good story and was enjoyable enough to play. opinions.
The last good final fantasy was Bravely Default, FACT
i get it
Yes the last good FF game was a scaled down copy of Golden Sun with every level as a lineir corador with maybe the odd switch at the end.
It's the game we wish Dark Dawn was.
Sure i guess if Bravely Default was an actual game. It's more like a Clash of Clans rehash,
Damien GUIBBAL its still better than Lightning Returns
Point taken. I find the only FF game I've liked in reacent years was Four Heroes of Light. Because it played like a classic FF game, no QTEs or real time bs. Sure the story was vanilla but it was good vanilla. Bravely Default was bad gimick on bad gimick and anyone who rates it more than 6/10 is lying to themselves. It just reaks of a cash grab.
" . . . you lose to pie" I'm so stealing that!
To be fair, many things lose to Kipling's Apple Pies.
Toblerbone and Lightning in the same video!? I like where this is going.
I love Final Fantasy.
Or y'know. People can stop bitching and let the ones that do enjoy the game play.
HEY HEY HEY NOW. No cheating mister! I know you were talking about how your friend had a ladyboner over it and you couldn't be bothered with the game, Edit your comment back >:c
Nickpws Now you just sound crazy.
Dynamic League Meanie >:c
Nickpws Gotta admit got you pretty good.
The plot thickens: God takes away a protagonist's emotions when she already lacked emotion to begin with.
So wait, God's building a new world and you're supposed to salvage what you can to bring it to the new one? Hey, that sounds like Avalon Code!
Prepare yourselves for the fourth installment....Final Fantasy XIII-4: Lighting Forever
Do it.
DO IT!!! ARGHHH!!
And what then? Lightning Rises?
And then Final Fantasy XIII-6: Lightning Strikes Back; Electric Boogaloo
Uhm... Cloud in the original FF7 actually wasn't that broody, he was an actually decent protagonist.
No the only decent protagonists in FF main series were from FF 6 and FF 9.
Noble Alfred
Well, to be fair, in the original FF7 he was confident, took charge and was actually kind of an ass, and despite having seen some shit in military life and losing a lot of what he cared about, still manages to be an ass. It were Kingdom Hearts and Advent Children who made him into the monotone emo he is today.
Although i admit he's not as good as Terra or Zidane, but he isn't bad either. Not great, but taking home bronze at best.
Also, Cecil from FF4 is also a really good character!
Noble Alfred Final Fantasy 6 is my favorite FF .
the two aren't mutually exclusive
***** Never played FF 5(heard bad things) but FF 4 played on android, half way through phone screwed up, so I can't judge, from what I know from the half I played the story was somewhat serious so the chibi models weren't really helping. I know there are other good games in the franchise infact my second most favorite FF is 3 remake, it was very charming and I rate it just below my favorite which is 9. While 6 is really really good, I am not a fan of depressing stories. I find 7, 8 and 10-1,10-2 only decent, cause of.. ..reasons. 12 was fine.
I would play Pie-tning Returns. :P
