I make them when I sit down to watch TV. Love them . I normally crochet them. I have a wooden crochet hook my grandpa had made for my grandmother and I watched her make them. And I now have it, the hook. I find crocheting to be easier for me. ❤

Yeah this is very confusing for me I think I could crochet much easier but I love to learn new techniques and Beth always brings us great projects. I feel like déjà vu I’ve either done this at a time in my life it’s very familiar but I don’t remember.

I am 68 years young. One day I went to my gramma's house and she was sitting at her treadle sewing machine sewing strips of fabric together end to end. If I remember right, she folded the ends lengthwise over the other. She would roll it up into a big ball. She would accumulate so many then she would send the balls to a weaver who would make those beautiful rugs that a lot of us covet. I inherited one from my MIL that is in my laundry room that is seeing its better days. I'm not giving it up without a fight. Last week I put a topstitch needle in my Juki and I sewed the perimeter and any areas that were coming loose. She still has a few more years left in her. Your rug is so cute! I love when you can take anything that you would consider a scrap and give it new life. 💜💜💜

Thank you! I'm a quilter but I bought the "toothbrush" needle and instructions in the early 90's. My attempt without an instructor or RUclips was pitiful. About 2 years ago I bought a wooden needle similar to yours and very professional instructions. I've yet to have the confidence to try again. Seeing you, a "newbie" to toothbrush rugs has me fired up again. Thanks for all your inspirational classes! I can't wait to start gathering strips.
Good morning Beth, my very talented mum taught herself a huge amount of crafts and had my twin brother and i learning them also when we were toddlers. Yes, my mum did that a) to keep us in one place for 5 minutes and b) because it was fun. I am fortunate to know lots of crafts because of her and do many crafts today because of her. She didn't keep good health and kept landing in the hospital and my dad was working every hour God gave him. We didn't have many toys to play with, so this was a way of us being able to play, even if we were really making things with scraps. I don't regret my childhood because it was a good one, if i take away the bullies, because we learned so much from this intelligent lady and were able to do things and know all sorts of trivia that contemparies didn't because they had friends and toys that they didn't care about, whether they got stolen or broken, they got replaced.
Going back to your mats though, you could also use them as protectors from hot plates or pots and pans. They can be rugs for floors because they withstand a lot of hard work. Seme here. We had no internet as kids, thankfully. Today's kids are so misfortune. They just sit and waste time watching others on their screens. So sad.
I have made many of these. I use a large wooden crochet hook. I hook in long rows back and forth for rectangular floor rugs. They are very sturdy and easy to wash. I’m a quilter so I always have a surplus of scraps. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Back in the 80’s I got my husband to alter several toothbrushes into a needle I could use to make these rugs. I used double knit fabrics that I cut into 2” strips and used old sheets to cut my runners from. I would sit on the floor and work it which helped me make sure it stayed flat..Recently have made several with flannel fabrics for the new great grands we’ve been blessed with! A total hit at the baby shower 😁

Hi Beth! Yes, I make these and they are a blast. I make them out of old t-shirts which don't fray and are easy to wash. Friends donate their old t-shirts to me to keep them out of landfill. Thanks for shining a light on an old but useful craft. Hugs from Canada.

We as children use to help an elderly lady in our small town and make strips and turn into rag balls…. My maternal grandmother did this ,turning rags or strips into rag balls. Sent them to a company and turned them into carpets….. she just about had wall to wall carpeting and it was beautiful
Thank you for sharing this craft. My grandmother, who emigrated from Europe in 1910, used to make these as rugs. This video brought back fond memories.

I have been looking into this, I was going to use up my selvage edge pieces.
I have made maybe 6 of these in the 80’s. I used muslin for my running piece. My needle was an actual toothbrush handle.
They were lovely and country like my home. I found round and oval the best shapes, and ended up unraveling an attempt at ❤heart shape. In my opinion, They are best kept on the smaller size vs larger. Because of the weight of them, you may want to use the laundromat to wash. Lie flat on picnic table or patio to dry and reshape it when you lay it down. When you are tired of it, don’t throw it out. You Will find A Good Repurpose. Maybe a dog mat. Maybe a soft place for your husband to stand on in his work shop? Maybe a back door mat. I admit I enjoyed it so much that after I put one on my living room floor, I would pick up one side of it and add to it every now and then. That made washing it a problem. Thanks for the memory.

Hi Beth! These are just so cute! Having done many different crafts over the years, I actually have a toothbrush needle from many years ago! I've not even ever used it 🤣🤣 but I crochet as well.
Very interesting craft Beth. The needle looks like the one used for Nalbinding . Which is a medieval craft using wool to make hats etc. I was studying and researching a hat my son bought from a 92 year old woman who made them for his reinactment group. The needle can also be made from a bamboo toothbrush, hence the name of your rug.👏♥️🇦🇺
They look beautiful on your chairs...I love learning a new craft. Last night I did my first half square triangle and was able to make a pinwheel block.

I bought the tool for this decades ago! I didn’t get around to doing it right away (or ever). Every once in a while, I come across the tool and think, I don’t even know how to do this anymore! But I still have the tool so someday maybe I can do it. 😂

I tried crocheting a rag rug a while ago. It was murderous on my hands so I gave up after I got to a mug rug size. This looks like it would be much kinder on the hands. Hurrying off to Amazon to purchase the needle. Thank you, Beth!

I make them with a large crochet hook and crochet them. I have made them with colorful rope before also. It is neat to see a different way to do something. Yours are very pretty!

My mother used to make rag rugs (from old garments) using a large wooden crochet hook. However, she always made her rugs big and to be used on the floor. They would get very dirty and were washed in an old wringer washing machine (and hung over the fence to dry). After the first washing they were never very pretty anymore. She would keep using them until they came apart in the washing machine. They were too thick to go through the wringer on that old machine. They didn't have power washers back then. I think a power washer may have been the best way to wash and rinse rag rugs.
Yes, I make them. It's been awhile since I've been working on my g cuties quilts. I have the strips all cut out. I love them. Lora is a fantastic teacher. She is the one that I watched to learn. I made a big oval one to fit my large foot stool
Ive made probably a dozen similar mini rugs. I love them for hot pads, plant coasters, and coffee coasters. None are made toothbrush style. Mine are braided from materials like denim, wool, or upholstery fabric.
I have done these before my first one I used blue jeans I will not do that again 😂😂

@@NannaLiz They are rolls of sheet fabric cut off of rolled bolts. I bought them 30 years ago when I was crocheting rugs. Some are 2” some are 1 1/2” widths.

My grandma used to make them out of plastic bags. She had no access to fabric scraps. She made rugs and placemats.

While I have heard the term of "Toothbrush rug", I have not made one. I suppose the more you do this, the easier it becomes.
The Girl Guide in me would like you to know the knot you are using is a half hitch. From my childhood, archived trivia brain. 😉
From my macrame' days, we just call it a half-knot, because it's half of a square knot. When my young granddaughter made some macrame' plant hangers of late, I tried my hand at it again. Fun to revisit!!

These are called toothbrush rugs because instead of the wooden “needle” women would use old toothbrushes. They would saw or break off the bristle end of the toothbrush and thread their strips thru the hole in the other end of the brush handle. This then would be their needle and tho their stitches varied, the common slip stitch like Beth is using was most popular.
