Japan.. What a band! Completely changed this former soul boy's way of life.! Take me back to the late 70s early 80s. Still have a snatched Japan hour in the man cave!
For me, Japan stays one of the best New Wave bands of the late 70's and early 80's : their best period 79/82 ! Short but so good with 3 amazing LPs, Quiet Life, Gentlemen take Polaroids and Tin Drum ! RIP Mick !
It's a shame that there was no official video of this track. Mick's 'Dreams Of Reason Produce Monsters' was brave, unconventional and quite fantastic. Mick inspired me to buy and play fretless bass 34 years ago. I'm very happy, yet sad, to see so many of us miss him. It often gets acute. He is quite uniquely loved as a musician isn't he? Rightfully so.
In case you see this all of these years later, people are still falling under his magical musical spell. I bought Tin Drum as a preteen in the mid '80s, and have listened to it regularly, but a deep loss had me delving deeper into Japan and particularly Mick's music this year and it has moved me deeply. He and they continue to inspire and move people and I wish it could continue forever. Individually and together they create/d exceptional music.
I love the picture where they're all smiling and laughing. They never shon that alot. Such a classic style for the time. I fell in love with it many years later. Now it's on the playlist every odd day.
Japan were a truly unique band. Every member being a brilliant musician but the underlying glue that held their sound together was the fretless bass of Mick. Gentlemen take Polaroids is my favourite album followed by Quiet Life then Tin Drum.
A fan since Adolescent Sex, Japan’s first album. How they all transformed musically. Sad that at the end of Mick’s life, he and David were not on speaking terms and David could not get to see him before he passed after all their years of friendship. Mick is sadly missed; gone way too soon.
This is the song that made me discover the greatness and uniqueness of Mick Karn's playing. I was (still am :D ) a David Sylvian fan, but had never cared too much about the Japan years (that's all changed now). When I heard this song I was intrigued by that wobbly... erm... "noise" accompanying David's vocals. "What the heck is THAT?" I asked myself. Well, THAT is Mick Karn.
My Father took his life in when I turned 6. Everyone tells me he was a legend and a fuckin rockstar. Before he left us, he kneeled down and told me that all the boxes in the closet were mine. And I said ok.👌 Today, I understand, he was passing his torch to me. I never needed to forgive him for anything. I don’t need to know why he left. He just didn’t see himself fit for this world. The boxes I inherited were a collection he spent hundreds of hours in hundreds of record stores from all over the world. A collection of music I would have never known. So eclectic so diverse, his taste has inevitably has rubbed off on me. I’m proud to acquire such a unique ear. And the words and sounds etched in the vinyl feels like he’s singing to me, about how he felt. And I’m so grateful to be able to understand how he felt in certain times of life though spread apart through time he’s with me and it’s okay if I feel like he did... But I have a legacy to live for. I’ve taught myself to sing and pluck strings uniquely and no one can take it away from me. So when I’m on stage singing about what you told me with your last words on the note you left me, I’ll know it’s you shouting me name!
I have a similar story with my father, im 21 years old and I am so sensitive to this music... lately I have been obsessed with japan members work, I still looking for answers, cause why is this so important to me... it's no only my dad's 80's music legacy... idk japan members were something else still today, my heart is blessed
