  • I went on an Interrail trip for the first time in my life, and I had a marvelous time. It also ended up being a pretty cheap way to travel! These are my top tips for how to save money while traveling on Interrail or Eurail.
To give you some extra information I also show my full travel budget for a three week solo Interrail trip.
The ten tips can be categorized like this, but with a lot more information added inside the video of course:
    - Decide what type of Interrail pass you need, since there can be hundreds of Euros in difference
    - Unless you really need to, choose second class instead of first class
    - You will need to reserve seats on various trains. Don't use to Interrail app for that, since they charge several Euros extra for every reservation
    - When booking hotels, make sure you check prices across several different booking sites
    - ...But try to stick to one site that gives you bonus nights, if you can
    - However, if you're more flexible, check the walk-in rate instead of booking online in advance
    - A very obvious tip is to avoid restaurants right next to major tourist attractions
    - And speaking of restaurants, don't forget to compare prices against other local prices - not against what it would cost at home
    - You might have to do laundry during your trip. If so, look for local laundromats or laundrettes instead of doing laundry at the hotel
    - And my final tip is to consider what local transportation you need in each city. Why not walk if you can?

As someone in the U.S., I loved this. Some of our cities have decent rail service, but even getting around the country on a train isn't very convenient. As a kid, I took the train from Chicago to Kansas City to visit my dad each summer, but it was only because of the convenience of being in the two areas.
A distant relative in the U.S. is planning a trip to Stockholm this summer and plans to take the train from Stockholm to Narvik, Norway. She loves trains and is always happy when visiting Europe that it's such an option for travel.

I've heard that the coast-to-coast Amtrack is a pretty cool experience though, with viewing cars and niceties that we don't have in Europe though! But yeah, I really like train travel. And it's absolutely the best way to get between e.g Stockholm and Gothenburg. It's a good way to travel up north as well, but it takes a lot of time... Sleeper trains are good though, especially if the trip is all the way up to Narvik! By car, that trip is gorgeous but exhausting...

@@ThreeStarVagabond If you're near an Amtrak station and going someplace with a station, it's a great way to travel. My mom refuses to fly, so when she's gone back to Chicago, it's by train. She's had a small sleeper room and loved it.
And you're right: we do have some niceties on trains here. As a kid, I dreamed about the day I'd be old enough to sit in the lounge car and have a cocktail or beer. But I've not been on an Amtrak since then. I've only taken the train into Dallas once and Fort Worth once. But I do love trains!

@@ChristopherGronlund It's a bit easier and even more convenient in Europe I guess, since trains stations are always in the center of the city. Well, I guess we'll see who sips a beer in a lounge car in the US first then! I don't have any plans right now but who knows in the coming years at least...

These are some handy tips, especially about using local laundromats! I'm gonna bring my wife to Sweden and I was thinking about different restaurants to bring her to! I'd love to see a video ranking the top 10 restaurants in Stockholm, or even in Sweden, (ideally ones that aren't TOO fancy either, keeping the Three Star Vagabond energy and budget firmly in my heart! 😅). Great video as always, keep it up!

Thank you! :D And I love that idea - I've been thinking about doing a video about affordable hotels, so one about affordable restaurants would be great too! I just have to find time to plan and record everything - always so many ideas and so little time :D

Cheers for the tips! Definitely going to look into it, especially when I think about traveling in Switzerland or Austria, I bet there are some spectacular landscapes along the train routes.

Awesome! Yeah, both of those countries are amazing - I drove through them on a road trip back in.. 2016 or so. Amazing experience! And yes, train works just as well (and you don't have to worry about the breaks not working on tiny Alp roads...)

Haha, it all depends on the destination right? But I don't think I could spend 4k in just a couple of days anywhere! :D I guess I like planning and finding pretty cheap options. I do try to have fun - I'd hate to make these videos if I didn't enjoy myself while doing them. Cheers!

I haven't been in Italy since I was a kid, I spent Lira. The Euro is good for them, because inflation was ridiculous. I'll have to get Swedish and Norwegian Kroner this winter. I remember the pre Euro days of Europe. I needed Dutch Guilders, Belgian Francs, Deutsch Marks, and so on.

    • @ThreeStarVagabond
      @ThreeStarVagabond  Год назад +1

Haha so true. It's hard to remember having to get different currencies in every country these days. But just be careful not to get too much (or any!) Swedish cash. And I think Norwegian as well. Most stores don't really accept cash these days, and contactless is just about the only way to pay everywhere!

Hello, another great video. What a beutiful sunny day. Where is place in Stockholm where you record the video, it has a very nice view. 😊 But most importantly, how did you pass without specifying the cost of the beers, Beer Pharaoh Vagabond. 😅 Joking aside, your videos will be the first guide I will look at when I travel on interrail. Have a great day. 🙋

It really was a nice day! This is close to where I live, so I simply went to the boardwalk and had a great time recording :D Haha, well I often eat pretty cheaply, so you can imagine how much of those "living expenses" was beer money... But thank you so much!
