On levelling up that's an easy one to answer. The gap has got wider.
If you live in a left behind northern town like where I've lived all my life it is easy to see.
Slippery Sunak says we have received levelling up money and whilst that is true, we still get one third less government funding per capita than in London and so even when we take those levelling up funds into account, we are still not anywhere near parity per person in terms of funding. So the gap will get wider.
An example of this in reality is that in a town full of manual, minimum and living wage jobs where you can't work from home, we have lost 23% of all bus services in recent years due to, in effect, budget cuts because subsidies to the local bus companies to run local services have been stopped and so those bus companies have axed many routes they deem not profitable enough.

Why are the costs rising? I’ll give you a clue private providers whacking up their margins. Remember most council services are provided by private companies, social care, cleansing, children’s homes etc.
Time for Labour to step in a regulate prices

I imagine the prices were government regulated in the old Rumania. I remember the pictures of disabled kids kept in cages. Pictures that emerged once government regulation collapsed and the West was able to look in.

@@grahamtranter3616 So um... are you implying that government regulation of local government contracts will lead to disabled children being imprisoned? Because that's quite a stretch. Non-regulated care institutions can have the same problem, as indeed has happened here quite recently with adult care homes. It's not regulation that's the cause of such cruelty. People can be cruel, people can be careless, and there needs to be appropriate, practical and compassionate oversight. Leaving everything to the exigencies of the market place is asking for more and worse.

It's impossible in such a short time to level up towns like my hometown when they're giving levelling up funds with one hand but then on the other hand they're forcing my employer, which is the largest employer in the town to decarbonise to meet net zero targets which is leading to many job layoffs in the next couple of years and because there's very few other jobs in the town, the already above average unemployment rate will skyrocket further.
Levelling up is just a phrase made up of empty words. They've no intention of levelling up and that is clear by giving us the odd million in extra funds but then giving us less in normal government funding per capita than almost everywhere else in England whilst systematically destroying the town's biggest employer who accounts for about 3/4 of all the town's current economy. So it's like them saying here's an extra £5 to level up but we are going to take an extra £500 from you.
Another reason why levelling up won't happen in towns like mine is because we all know come election time, Labour or Conservative government, taxes are going to go up even if it's only stealth taxes like fuel duty. These taxes disproportionately affect the poorer in society who tend to live in more deprived areas.
So watch and see. The gap will only get wider because our politicians don't understand what they're talking about or who they're talking about and so they make decisions which actually achieve the opposite of what the original objective was.
2030! In 2019 by my estimation, my town would need about thirty years to catch up with other areas and in fact recent reports have said levelling up won't be achieved in my lifetime. (I'm currently 47).

There are several government-related factors that have directly caused the UK's economic troubles:
The government has consistently underinvested in public sector projects, including infrastructure, hospitals, and transportation.
This lack of investment has hindered economic growth and productivity.
Government policies have failed to provide sustained financing to key areas of the economy, limiting growth potential.
Frequent changes in leadership (three prime ministers in one year) have created an unstable environment for businesses and long-term planning.
The UK has consistently lacked a comprehensive, overarching economic strategy to address its challenges.
However, the Labour Party has outlined a more comprehensive, but maybe unpopular strategy for some, to address the UK's economic problems compared to the Conservatives.
Although no political will dare to admit it, the UK's exit from the EU has evidently created economic uncertainty, affecting business investment and trade relationships.
Decades of neglect in critical infrastructure, such as the electricity grid, have led to high costs for businesses trying to expand or establish operations.
Ultimately, the government's blanket approach of reducing state involvement and expanding privatization has not been a panacea for the UK's economic and social challenges.

A good presentation piece. As for levelling up😢.
As long as poorly educated artistic graduates can grandstand, via legal protests, blocking any commercial / industrial from been built, those of us in Upper Britain are stuck (politeness counts).
Please give us a break from poorly educated attendees of insignificant public schools.

Why not look at including a Scottish expert to discuss how the Scottish government has lifted families out of poverty? The poorest areas in the UK are now in the rest of the UK.

Fancy that! If the next government does what the IFS says, things will be better. - thats what I think she said, in her last sentences to conclude the piece.
Strangely I also think we'd be better off if they did what I say!
We'll know when things are really bad.., the migrants will be setting sail back to France.

      Wikipedia
“The Institute for Fiscal Studies receives funding from various sources, such as the Economic and Social Research Council, international organisations and other non-profits.[25]
It has been rated as 'highly transparent' in its funding by Transparify[26] and has been a given a A grade for funding transparency by Who Funds You?.[27]” This would be rather different from the Think Tanks of Tufton Street which keep their funding streams secret.
I suppose you could check further as it certainly has its critics. At least you looked at it, I assume, and for which credit is due.
