Pokémon Legends Arceus Does NOT Get Enough Credit

  • Having recently completed Pokémon Legends Arceus, one of the latest installments of the franchise, I've come to the conclusion that this game was one of the greatest in it's line to date. It's no less than a great addition to the series and has many things to show for it. Surprisingly however, despite the many liberties taken by Game Freak to make this game as good as it turned out to be, it still gets a lot of unwarranted criticism in areas that it actually did quite well in. So in today's video, I'll be talking about Pokémon Legends Arceus and why it doesn't get nearly enough credit as it deserves.
    Please enjoy and thank you for watching!

      Considering how vastly different a lot of the 'similar' mechanics are between ScaVio and LA, and the fact that there isn't a lot of overlap between the developers, I genuinely think that we won't see the changes enacted by fan response to LA until Generation 10. ScaVio doesn't really feel like it was made after LA. It feels like its clunky cousin.

      Well the way I've seen it they've "fallen off" but not in the way everyone accuses them of. They have good ideas and are able to put them to code, but SV in particular was fucked over by TPC's schedule more than anything. The "small indie company" argument, mocked though it may be, is true... it's small because it's still run by the same people as 30 years ago, who are stubborn about changing their methods even with the increasingly tightening demands. That's the issue.

      No, Scarlet and Violet is the byproduct of Legends Arceus and BDSP failure. Making Scarlet and Violet a success in comparison despite its few glitches, there was no reason to forward the remake games to another company just for them to ruin them and once you see legends Arceus you realize this is what BDSP could have been and more. All of what these are could have literally out done Scarlet and Violet but instead prove they don't respect remakes anymore after ORAS which was an amazing remake so how could our expectations not be high and it wasn't hard to accomplish either.

    My amendment for the research tasks would be to have more Pokemon specific tasks. There are plenty of tasks related to side quests in the game. Those were unique and a lot more fun than using the same move 40+ times (requiring endless trips back to camp to recover power points).
    Or at least make the task counters way smaller (no larger than 10) so that you don’t have to spend hours on just one Pokemon. There’s definitely potential there to make the task system enjoyable. It just didn’t manage to do so this time around.

People haven’t been there for that long, so yeah, it’s gunna be a lot of wilderness. Heck, they even call it a “vast wilderness” in the first teaser trailer. What were people expecting? And like you said, the Pokédex, the quests, finding the unown and wisps, they all give you something to do out there. More to do than SV by far. 😬

    i am very shocked that this channel doesn't even have 300 subs! the editing quality is really good, and i definitely agree with your points. the fact that game freak split in two to produce this and scarvio is very..... not good. on multiple levels. i completed what little post game there is in less than one day, and i'm STILL trying to complete post game in legends (the genies are so fucking hard and it's a struggle as i'm disabled, but even then the disability accommodation for pla is better than scarvio. different rant for a different video [especially as a colorblind shiny hunter.. yeesh])
    the story isn't the best, but the lack of perfection with the story was definitely made up for in the gameplay and replayability factor. that's something game freak has been lacking in for years, and ESPECIALLY as a huge sinnoh fan, this game just felt... amazing. the story wasn't perfect, but this was a change to a very repetitive formula that was well needed. most people seem to hate it because of it not being the ✨brand new pokemon game ✨as it seems, as scarlet and violet didn't give pla a CHANCE to have proper fans. i hope people do come to these same conclusions in the video, you know what's good with pla, and it's one of the 2 s ranked games imo. I have absolutely no clue how Game Freak goes from the extremely mid/borderline bad SwSh to the stellar Legends Arceus back to the awful Scarlet/Violet. PLA legitimately feels like it comes from another timeline (heh) with how innovative, touching, and aesthetic the game is. PLA captures this amazing 19th century woodcut/watercolor aesthetic so wonderfully, really capitalizing on the Switch's less powerful hardware by making the muddied graphics intentional. This is a far cry from SwSh and especially SV.
    Not to mention the actual gameplay, the crafting, the Pokémon animations, the stories. Everyone talks about the dog Pokémon from SV as a good side story, but PLA is full of them! The Chimecho who just wants to fit in, the Wurmple who grows into a Dustox but is still loved, the entire village's growth from fearing Pokémon to farming, working, living, and playing alongside them. You actually make a tangible difference in the world around you for the first time in a Pokémon game. Sure it lacks the multiplayer and competitive aspects like online battles, breeding, etc. but the single player experience only benefits from it.
    Also something I never hear mentioned: you can completely the entire dex, with mythicals (granted you have the games necessary), without trading or time gated events. No other mainline game EVER has allowed this.
    PLA is a phenomenal entry in the series, easily the best Pokémon game of the last decade and possibly the greatest ever.

      And I couldn't agree more with your point about the dex, it's SO nice to be able to complete it without having to trade, especially this day in age where you have to pay for online features. People too often overlook the good that came from that lack of multiplayer aspects. I can only imagine how happy it made some completionists who prefer a single-player experience.

    I love PL:A not only because of the gameplay and being able to explore a region in the past, but because you can clearly see how Game Freak was using it as a test bed and stepping stone from Sword & Shield's Wild Area and Isle of Armor/Crown Tundra DLC open areas, to Scarlet and Violet's completely open world design. Watching the progression of their understanding of the Switch hardware has been a trip, even if the stumbling blocks and hurdles are ones that better companies have tackled decades ago.
    Honestly, this is a step in the right direction, and GF really was/is held back from taking said steps sooner because of the hardware the company they work with chooses to use as a platform. That's not to say that GF is blameless for all the mishaps, and TPCI's merchandising rotation for the entire franchise does not help in any way, but we would have been seeing these steps for the core games a long time ago if this franchise was on PlayStation or Xbox or PC, and I would dare anyone to try to say otherwise on that point.

    Is it my favorite? No. Did it bring back 90% of what I loved about the series? Absolutely. Is it my favorite pokemon game since explorers of sky? Yes. Between this and Scarlet and Violet, I think Gamefreak is on the right track for once.
    I didn’t like Gen 7 and I only enjoyed the Gen 8 post game. I’m not praising the new games just to praise the new games. I like that they added new evolutions for once. (SS barely did this with sirfetched and persecker) In LOA we got absolute bangers like ursaluna, overquil and Basculegion. The only “mid” introduction was Electrode, and it’s no worse than the original.

      Right on the money with this reply, I completely agree. LOA isn't my favorite and could definitely be better, but it does a really good job of innovating and bringing something different to the table for once.
      Their recent games have been pretty decent, but there was a time when they were always experimental, and because of that we got a lot of quality games that weren't just the usual formula with slight changes like mystery dungeon, ranger, etc.

    I don't think I've ever gotten lost in a game like the first time I played PLA. I went to the first area and spent somewhere around 3~ hours straight just roaming and catching pokémon. It absolutely had the potential to be the best game in the franchise, but by the end I was left wanting. It pads out its runtime by making you get stars, and when I look back I remember the story beats-not the researching-so it feels too short. Hopefully when it gets a second installment they'll devote more resources to it and it can get a treatment comparable to what Scarlet and Violet had.

    • @TensaShinra
      @TensaShinra  Год назад

      I definitely understand this point of view. It would have been a lot better if they didn't limit story progression with the research system. I feel like I personally didn't have a problem with it since it was the other way around for me, and I actually got into the story before the exploration. So by the time I had to do research to progress the story, there was still a lot left for me to explore. But I agree, it would've for sure been better if they never limited the story with the research system so that people wouldn't run into that problem, and hopefully they'll learn from it if they continue making Legends games.

    People love to overexaggerate with Pokemon. None of the modern games look like Gale of Darkness at all, they're much more modern looking. Now don't get me wrong, I think that the Gamecube games have a lot more cohesive of an art style than most of the modern games, but that is not at all the same thing as looking the same or worse. I also think it's wrong to even call Legends Arceus an "open world" game when it's got a lot more in common with zone based games like Monster Hunter than it does any open world game.
    Arceus wasn't at all perfect, and I can think of a lot of improvements I'd want, but it was the ray of hope I needed for the franchise's future. I even enjoyed Sword and Shield for what they were, but Legends Arceus showed me what is possible for the future of the series. Unfortunately, I got rudely slapped across the face with Scarlet and Violet being the most broken games in the franchise by a massive margin, and immediately wanted to return to a Legends style of game in nearly every way except competitively.
    GameFreak needs to lean into Legends improvements and really build the next game into something special. We're coming up on Generation 10 and the 30th anniversary of the Franchise. If they really want to rebuild some of the faith they've lost with fans with some of the recent games, now is the time to do it. Rethink and rework any processes you have to GameFreak, it's now or never.

    I think people are way too harsh on games these days. Game developement is NOT easy, its a very time consuming and difficult process that requires a lot of prior education, hard work, and teamwork between a large group of people. Yes, sometimes devs are lazy... but more often then not it has nothing to do with laziness, and everything to do with poor management and time constraints. Pokemon Scarlet and Violet is a buggy mess that somehow broke sales records. If the Pokemon dev team had more time to work on these games, and had more experience, the games would be way better.
    In Pokemon Legends: Arceus' case, this was something entirely new. A new take on the Pokemon world, a new take on Pokemon gameplay... and an entirely new format of game that GameFreak has never even tried before. Its not perfect but it sure as heck is one of the most interesting and unique Pokemon games out there. This game is NOT what I would call lazy. Its one of the least lazy modern Pokemon games in our time.
    I feel it deserves way more praise, because it was a lot of fun, and most importantly it was _new._ People shouldn't hate on this game because then it tells GameFreak that we don't like it, and they likely won't try doing this again. This game is honestly great, and the more support it gets the more likely we are to get more games like it!

      It's fair to have some criticisms, but the keyword is SOME. Like you said, if people are too harsh, it's very likely that at some point GameFreak will stop taking it as criticism and start viewing it as complaining. Let's just hope they see the positive reviews and continue pursuing these types of games!

To me the game was great as a first run through but it has no replay value whatsoever. Discussion on Pokemon games can easily become polarizing. I think its good to call out bad faith reviews so we can be more honest about the strengths and weaknesses of each Pokemon game.
    Buuuuut I don't really agree with many of your points either.
    Yes, this was Game Freaks first attempt at an open world style game (unless you count the Wild Area and DLC for Gen 8....), but I don't think this is a reason why the game is good. Its just an excuse for the state the game came out in. Its understandable to a degree. But Horizon Zero Dawn was Guerrilla Games' first open world too. The difference is obvious and I don't think we can dismiss the shortcomings of the game because it was their first attempt.
    I don't watch penguinz0, but I get the sense his criticisms are a bit hyperbolic and not worth calling out. Can you see more than 3 Pokemon at a time? Yeah, sure. But is 5 much better? The core of the argument is that the draw distance does affect many aspects of the game including immersion. Maybe I'm being too sensitive to this argument, but you also did say "the mass outbreak feature which literally spawns a million Pokemon all around you" just after. I get that you do not literally mean a million spawn. And I think we can also understand the actual meaning when Charlie says "only 3 Pokemon spawn" too.
    I also kind of disagree about the art direction. Sure, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all, so I will try not to call out anything specific like the trees. But on a technical level, Legends Arceus was not impressive at all. At best, I can say that the visuals never got in the way of my experience? But the poor visuals paired with the frame rate issues genuinely takes me out of the game, which is a shame.
    The story is kind of hard to discuss. It wasn't impossible to follow, but it still had issues in my opinion. It was way too dialogue heavy, made gameplay feel linear, the writing wasn't that great, and overall the story was a bit too anime like for my taste. The "its for kids" argument doesn't make sense to me either. Kids will end up skipping the story whenever possible in my experience, which is ultimately what I ended up doing too. It was slow and boring. People can disagree on that. Just sharing my opinion.
    Really though, there are gonna be unfair arguments about the game going either way. Again, its good to call out those arguments for being unfair, but I kinda feel unconvinced by what was said in this video. Not trying to hate on the video either. This is a complex topic with many points that could be argued in favor or against the game. I hope to see more good faith discussion like this video is trying to do.

    • @TensaShinra
      @TensaShinra  Год назад

      Glad you think the video makes for a good discussion! I can definitely see some of your points there, and I honestly agree that most Pokémon discussions (especially concerning the games) tend to be very divided as far as opinions go. I always find it muchhh more productive to try to come to an understanding with the opposing side and try to see their point of view.
      These types of conversations are large in part about perspective, so I always encourage people to voice their thoughts so I can better understand them. You and I might not necessarily agree on the story for example, but I do see where you're coming from. It's like you said, this topic can get very convoluted with many arguments to be made. I myself could talk about this alone for hours lol.
      I even cut some of my own points out of the video just so it wouldn't be too long. There was a whole argument I had about how, in comparison, the first Uncharted game was also not incredible. How even in its own time, there were far more games with better reviews that ALSO held up better. Even with that, it's now regarded as one of the greatest franchises and all because it was given time to flourish, which could very well become the case for Legends if they continue to pursue the blueprint.
      Overall, it's just something I love to hear different POV's on, especially when in good faith. I completely agree that more of these types of discourse would be nice to see.

What Pokémon game have you had the most fun playing? Good question. Mines is Legends by FAR! What’s the most annoying thing in recent Pokémon games? (Besides spamming A to skip cringe 4 year old kid dialogue) the most annoying thing is a wild Pokémon triggering a forced battle by simply walking in proximity of it. It’s annoying time wasting that kills the immersion of open world travel. Legends doesn’t do this annoyance and that alone puts it way above all Pokémon games including scarlet/violet.

      I completely agree man, especially with the point about forced battles. It was such a fresh breath of air from constantly being thrown into encounters that you wanted no part of, constantly wasting money on repels and everything.

    Legends arceus is both underappreciated and overrated. The game is great if what you like about pokemon is exploring the areas and catching, cataloging and analyzing pokemon. Its a step in the right direction and i appreciate it a ton but at the same time its got a shitload of issues people who like it tend to ignore. It looks...im not gonna sugarcoat it terrible, the story was middling, the animations and cutscenes where especially lazy with characters just walking into the scene like theyve been there all along and the town and its people feel extremely empty and almost robotic. The town doesnt feel like its alive which is weird because even Ocarina of time managed to achieve that feeling. The game is visibly unfinished and lacks content for people that dont really care about catching a shit ton of pokemon, so when compared to other Nintendo titles it just goes down without a fight as a 6/10 game NOT worth a whole 60 bucks. If it was finished and had like a year or 2 more in the Oven it couldve been one of pokemons greatest games ever but as it is, its a "step in the right direction" and nothing more

    • @TensaShinra
      @TensaShinra  Год назад

      I respect your opinion, but you're essentially calling it a "terrible step in the right direction" which doesn't really make sense. It has to have SOME good qualities to be a step in the RIGHT direction. I wouldn't say it did more good than bad or vice-versa, and that people who like it are completely ignoring its problems. It's more so that the general player base just can't find a balance between criticism and praise. I know that the game isn't incredible, but both casuals and regular players of the series clearly agree that it brings some merit to the table. Saying that it's a horrible game to anyone except for Pokémon fans and that it's one of Nintendo's worst games is kind of disingenuous when there are definitely worse games on the switch without doubt. So no, it's not perfect. Pretending that it is will only lead to more half-baked games in the future. But all the same, pretending like it's an all around horrible game will lead them to thinking that there was nothing good about the game, and therefore won't consider pursuing similar projects any time soon. I would absolutely hate to see them backtrack on some of the great features that were introduced with this game.

    Idk, it feels kinda alright. The world is bland and uninteresting, there are no interrsting dungeons or puzzles. All the requests are really just uninteresting and stupid fetch quests.
    But the game looks and feels great. It doesn't look as good as Let's Go, but it has very stylized and polished Graphics.
    It's certainly the best game on switch tho. If it had a bit more to do that felt a bit more intertwined with the new catching mechanics, or the story was slimmed down a bit. Maybe reduce the cutscenes and put a bit more effort into making the world seem interesting, then youd have the best game since Black 2 and White 2.

    You give this game way too much credit, the number one problem with this game is the fact they gave us BDSP when they gave use legends Arceus around the same time based on the same region and the fact they purposely made BDSP bad so Legends stand out when they could have just done for BDSP what they did for Legends. This game come out of nowhere, it would have been better not to get BDSP as they did nothing special and nothing worth buying the game for while Legends was so different and unique with real effort that they should have did with BDSP. They pushed BDSP to another company when they should have done the remake themselves with what Legends Arceus could have been, makes no sense to make this game when the Diamond and Pearl remake was next like they couldn't be bothered yet here's Legends Arceus ruining Pokemon lore like they don't care because they don't. Point is Legends Arceus and BDSP should have been one in the same, for all the flaws both games have they could have been far less if they were one in the same, giving us a proper remake with an amazing twist to the story of the past and allowing us to experience the game the same way as Legends with the BDSP story involved and this would have blown all of the past remakes out of the water.
    Any excuse not to do this isn't valid and the fact they keep making the excuses of "more powerful systems" has been used since handhelds were a thing. Now they have the power and the excuses remain the same, they even cut a huge margin of Pokemon to accomplish the "more room for more power" yet still not enough, the game is mainly empty like Sword/Shield but I'd excuse that if the game was more but it was the only thing good. The story makes no sense but it was a fun story and a fun spin but it wasn't worth the sacrifice of a genuine remake. I stand by my statement and you all can love this game but i feel robbed and my money wasted, and i am sorry for venting my opinion because I know i sound whinny but i wanted years for D/P remake to get this crap then followed up on "better" crap in my opinion so I'm sad.

      No worries I completely understand what you mean. As someone who started with Gen 4, to this day, I still feel robbed with what we got from those remakes. It's my favorite Gen, and it's a shame that it didn't get better treatment.
      I agree that BDSP should have been what Legends Arceus was and more. It's just that for me, I was still able to enjoy these revisits to Sinnoh despite everything because of how much I love it and how much they put into Arceus. To me, it was as close to what we should've gotten to BDSP. Of course, no matter what good there was to find in BDSP and Legends, they both still could've been much better, so I'll respect your opinion and won't try to change your mind because I thought the same way at a point too. I feel like most Gen 4 fans are on a similar boat.

    1. Gamefreak has 0 excuse for there Games being rushed and unfinished as they are. They own a huge amount of the Pokemon franchise, not the Pokemon company. They have the richest franchise sitting on there laps. So if they would care...They could buy 100 qualified developers with knowledge no problem. But they don't. So this point is not true.
    2. If the expectaion of it being comparable to other tripple A games is false ... why does it cost the same as every other tripple A game? But this just counts for the entire franchise...Pokemon will never be good. Or close of what the fans deserve from a Franchise this big.
    Luckily there are really good alternatives. But people don't play them because it doenst trigger there nostalgia. Which is so sad.

    • @TensaShinra
      @TensaShinra  Год назад +3

      I decided not to bring up that point in the video, but my counterpoint to that is simply throwing their money at the problem doesn't solve anything for them. That would arguably make the game feel even more lifeless. First and foremost, they need to have the passion and be willing to put effort into making a great game before hiring soulless workers that could care less about the product and how it turns out. There are games with a much lower budget that are a million times better just because they had the passion to make them good. The fact that they could have just skipped this and put more effort into scarlet & violet means that they're at least being open minded to new formulas which is 100% a good thing and a step in a great direction.
      As for the price tag, that's more of a Nintendo thing than anything else, seeing as they're the publishers and they're not exactly known for being generous with their prices.
      You're absolutely right that with the money they have, they could make an insanely crazy experience, but that's not what most people play Pokémon for. They prefer the simpler turn-based experience that has become the norm in their mainline games, which is why despite Arceus being such a step up, it didn't sell as much as even some of their older games. Pokémon has always been at the very least "good," and if people only liked the franchise for the nostalgia factor, it would've fallen off a long time ago.
