Well I understand your frustrations with Portuguese as a Brazilian, I know for a fact here that even people who are born and raise, don't understand the language very well, since it has a lot of small details and rules, that mimic our daily basis dose of bureaucracy. Did you got to other places besides Rio? Like São Paulo or other states? Cause it's a Looot, but I mean a Looooot different. Regarding learning programing languages; you can be fluent in object orientation and other languages, but if you want to understand GML better you will have to handle some frustrations as well. It may seem like other languages out there, but you gotta handle all those small differences, how argument works on scripts, and a lot of other things that are consider bad practices in other mainstream programing languages.

I totally agree with you! If you don't try to program something yourself and only copy tutorials, you won't get anywhere. It's frustrating sometimes if something isn't working at first or if you realize it isn't as easy as you first thought, but it's a very rewarding feeling finally being able to do it without any tutorials. I startet out learning GameMaker by watching your tutorials and figured out a lot myself by just messing aroung and trying different things and now I really got the hang of it. Thank you, heartbeast for all your tutorials and help, you're awesome.

  • @samsibbens8164

This applies to art and pixel art or art in general as well. I made impressive progress in 2 days (which I posted, I tried doing sprites like Hotline Miami)
I speak three languages and I should know that you have to just try stuff and not worry much and that's how you make progress, but for some reason I never applied this to learning art or pixel art... I kept trying to find tutorials, drew a sprite or two and gave up...
Right now I'm using two light gray colors and one darker grey color and I draw my sprites with that and use random image blends to add actual colors, and it's working pretty well.

Hey there! I'm french so you can guess my native language isn't english but I don't know exactly how, I started to speak english really easily without any kind of problems. But this video helped me understand that I can't just look what you do in your tutorials, copy it and change some values to say that I'm able to program. It's about 2-3 months that I didn't tried to code anything but you actually made me think "Why don't I try to write some stuff and see how it works out" so for that, Thanks you :) Now I'll try to make some simple things every week/months and improve myself! Looking forward to the day I'll be able to say "Hey Heartbeast! Can you take a look at what I've done?" and be proud of my work ^^

  • @Warrenaterz

Outright agree with this! When I was first learning computer programming myself, I never made any progress whatsoever until I'd actually set myself an end goal I wanted to achieve. You can't really learn without trying stuff for yourself and making the mistakes along the way.

Hola, Ben - I've been following your channel for ages (and emailed you a little while ago about how you inspired me to get back into coding!) and I'm currently living in South America (Colombia). I'm an English teacher, but also learning Spanish by living here, and what you say about worrying about speaking correctly is 100% true.
The biggest challenge is just having the confidence to try, and therefore accept that you'll make mistakes. And likening this to coding is a great idea, because I've found that to be 100% true, as well. Some of the best discoveries (learning Spanish and coding) is when I've attempted to say/code something and someone's kindly corrected me. If you never try you'll never know!
    Cheers!
    Rev. Austin/Wayne G.

Thank you for this inspiring video! I know the struggle with coding, I'm more of an artist than coder and it took me a year to really understand just some basic stuff. Now I'm at a point where I can fix most mistakes myself and I can implement examples in my own projects. But I think the toughest part for most people is to find something to begin with. There's just an overwhelming amount of resources but it's tough to really find something good! I recommend you to many people because you seem truly genuine and you actually explain stuff. Thank you and keep up the good work!!

Hello Benjamin, I am currently finishing my systems engineering career and because of this I have not enrolled in your courses due to the short time I would have to dedicate to them, but I want to learn a lot about gamemaker, especially to develop a game like Castlevania Symphony of the Night. If you do a tutorial to create a game like that, I promise that I will pay you, maybe not much, due to the obligations I have, but I will do it month after month. I've seen your Hack-n-Slash tutorial and I like it a lot, because in the game I want to do, I want the character to have the combos system both when standing and when he is crouching. But I have had difficulties to implement the jump in that game, given that it has been programmed with "cases", I imagine that it must be implemented in the movement case. Anyway, I admire you very much, and I would like to learn a lot from you and be a friend of yours. Thank you! May God always bless you, and I really hope I can be your friend, even in heaven.

Hey HeartBeast, do you think you could teach us how to make a choice-based inventory system? What I mean is, in order to pick up the object, you have to choose to pick it.
Ex. It's an item. Pick it up?
    Yes No
And if you pick it up, then it says "Picked up item"
    and the item disappears.
If you don't pick it up then the text disappears. If you change your mind it starts back from the beginning.
If you need a reference as to what I mean, it'd be like Undertale's item text boxes.

Ben.. You didn't begin with saying who you were. Dont forget that this is YT. Anyone could start with any vid you publish. Always say who you are. But also... I don't think you have to if you don't feel like it. Because you are being authentic. but if you feel like YT is an outlet you want to use... consider sharing your goals. What you want out of YT. Then we will understand or be prepared for what to expect from you as a content creator. BTW. I'm having you in my game's credits (u taught me much) cheers
