What a plane! Why doesn't anyone install FPV on these planes? I'm going to install it on my Futura Jet, I bet it would be just like the real thing with OSD and all.
I'll try to answer that, Bari; but please don't think I'm trying to be rude or smart about this. The simple answer is... Er -
I appreciate that a lot of people are into FPV these days, but to some of us 'old' RC modellers it has absolutely nothing to offer. An ounce of imagination provides the perfect FPV experience without any of the cameras or goggles or whatever.
The thrill of flying 'line-of-sight' (as I believe the young peeps call 'flying' these days) is in the challenge of being on the ground. That's a GOOD thing. Shifting your viewpoint combined with the freedom of being able to see the model you've built (often from scratch) performing all the time is what it's all about for a lot of us.
We've never dreamed of being on-board our planes. We've always just wanted to SEE them, flying. We know what the ground looks like from up there. And clouds. And birds. And trees. And turns. And steep dives. And aerobatics. Flying's just more interesting when viewed from the ground.
That's what we got into RC for originally, and nothing's changed. We want to see the models, not see from them. Believe it or not, many of us don't want to use gyro stabilisation or flight-controllers either. We like all that messy flying stuff. I've not set up any control mixes on my transmitter. I've got rates and expo for maiden flights, but I co-ordinate turns manually. I don't have elevator-compensation dialled-in for when I change camber or deploy flaps - I input that manually, too. I think a lot of old-school pilots do.
Computer radios are great, but I don't want mine to give me less to do: I love flying, not having Open TX do all the difficult bits for me. I like being involved. I even like screwing up and making mistakes! If the hobby were easy I'd have packed it in years ago and moved on to online shoot 'em ups or Facebook or something.
So... we don't install FPV gear because it actually takes away our main reason for flying. Maybe it's a generational thing. I think many of today's young pilots got into RC through operating quad-copters, where 'just' flying is often seen as the boring part getting in the way of uploading cool stuff onto RUclips. All of the excitement comes from cameras and video editing.
To me that's getting things backwards. I can imagine what the FPV view will be - it's exactly what I imagined it was when I was a little kid flying kites and watching larks and seagulls. I've seen FPV in my mind, and that's enough. So whether it's from a bike, a skateboard, a car, a surfboard, a Zlin or a dog's collar, FPV is just... not very interesting. I've seen it. It's... meh.
I got my PPL in a little Cessna ages ago, so maybe that has something to do with my lack of interest. Been there, done that, seen it all before... But line-of-sight never loses its fascination especially for my main interest, which is thermal soaring.
Ah well. We're just different people, I suppose. Have a fantastic time with your next project, you ol' FPV guy! ;-)
