Definitely true, Wiscsuzki. The child "grows" if you pay attention to him, autistic or not. It does not cure autism, but you will have a better relationship with your children.

God bless you Barry Kaufman. You have helped so many people. It took me this long to find your information and I have been searching and reading everything. I wish I would have found you sooner. Instinctively I have been doing much of this. I am sure I made many mistakes. I quit my job to take time with my child. Now he is interested in music and has joined the school orchestra. He is finally in a great school with children with these issues, the classroom and curriculum is specially designed.

attitude, attitude, attitude! I love that. This makes so much sense. I have training in ABA but this approach is so love and acceptance based. It resonates deep!

I just found this site. I tried to explain to people that it is a social interaction issue no matter how well they do not or they do speak

Wow! Your post is absolutely beautiful to read! Hearing Mr. Kaufman and reading your letter, my way of seeing my students will change completely.

The program I work for implements ABA and I can see how this strategy would be so much more beneficial for both the child and family.
Instead of focusing on getting them to learn the way we want to teach them we should be facilitating learning the way they learn.
    Love it!

Doesn't sound "outrageous" to me. Quite sensible actually. I don't know anything about Son-Rise beyond this video. This is much like how I am with my kids naturally.

When I read his book 'Son-Rise: the Miracle Continues' I was struck by the fact that he and his wife were in a financial position which allowed the wife to stay home with Raun (their autistic son) and spend 10-12 hours a day working with him. Unfortunately, many families don't have this kind of time and resources. So the school system/ABA-trained therapists/etc. presents one option for overwhelmed parents.

Hello. I would love to explain more about this and don't have enough room to post a substantial enough answer. Please email me at becky@option.org and I will explain how we would deal with this. Essentially, we believe our children are doing the very best they can at all times to take care of themselves. Once we have an understanding of this, we can move forward with effective techniques in order to help them.
