I decluttered my 5 y/os bedroom over Christmas break. We went through her toys one by one (even all the tiniest Barbie accessories etc). She kept a couple of babies and 2 Barbies and a handful of accessories. The rest was thrown or donated. I was shocked she was willing to get rid of so much. BUT, immediate success. The next morning she played alone contentedly for hours!! She hasn't done that in ages, because I think all the stuff was so overwhelming!! Thank you for sharing so much wisdom!
This is SO awesome to hear!!! Kids are minimalists at heart!!!
My daughter wants to declutter tooo!! But i keep holding onto her toys. Shes 6! 😅
Let it go!😅🎉❄️@@busrayalavac
@@busrayalavac🎯 blame it on the parents
@@busrayalavac 😂 I do the same! Don't want to let go of the memories!
I actually made a treasure bin for my hubby - a bunch of random crap that I didn’t know what to do with but he doesn’t want me to chuck out - now when he’s looking for it I know where it all is, instead of random places - he’s satisfied knowing I didn’t chuck it, and I am satisfied because it’s all contained in one place 😊
This comment might've just saved my marriage 😂😂
Genius!! "I store my duplicates at the thrift store" instead of just in case inventory. What a mind shift!
That’s so wild to me… to buy things more than once .. that you just had. But hey💨🧭I’ve done it and I hate it.
@@badgamergirl6182 I'm with you! Totally agree!!!
I'm a declutter freak but I wasn't always this way. We built our current home 5 years ago and we had to pack up the old one. The accumulation of 20 years of things when my kids were growing up and I was too busy to focus on it was astounding. Astounding. But I think the thing that hit me the hardest was the baby and toddler clothes that I had set aside for 'someday-grandbabies'. When my husband pulled the boxes from the attic, I was horrified at the condition of the clothes - the clean and carefully folded things had stains reappear, had yellowed, had elastic that was no longer functioning and the clothes were all over just groovy and nobody would put a child in them. I had hoarded these clothes instead of passing them on and now nobody could get a second use with them. That upset me s much. Now I use it, when it's utility is gone for me, off it goes to a new owner.
Excellent story to remind me that others can use things now! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for making this comment. Yeah, that’s where I am, and I need to learn to do just exactly what you just said you learned. Thank you.
Yep, I'm 63, no kids, so I'm passing things on to people who can use them NOW, rather than have them have to trudge through rooms and rooms of things after I'm gone. Things like food, fine, that's easy, but if I have something I'm no longer interested in, off it goes. I run it past them first, and if not, donated elsewhere or tossed in the trash.
I appreciate your honesty!
Most of my son's baby clothes were given away.
I sealed his "coming home" outfit in a zipper bag in my top bureau drawer.
I showed his fiancee, and their son also wore it home from the hospital (1.5 lbs heavier!).
Oh wait, I'd also bagged his Batman pjs - with detachable cape (velcro) - as a memory item, and left them in HIS top drawer.
One day, I spotted my grandson wearing them in a video they sent!
He loves them as much as his Dada did, and Dad enjoyed passing them along.❤
I use older or unwated shampoos as a toilet scrub. Clean toilet, great smelling bathroom.
I clean the shower with my old shampoo...lol....I'll need to try it in the toilet now👍
I use it for hand pump soap!
I do the same with dish soap bottles that are really low!
Nothing…. NOTHING!….. motivates me to make my own progress more than a video of you maniacally running around your “decluttered” home decluttering. My favorite. Thank you!! 🤩
Same! I love watching her, then I'll go declutter something 😂
Hi Dawn! I just heard a lady on Moody radio call in about a testimony about how your channel has encouraged her declutter and trust God instead! It was so beautiful and it sounds like you truly helped her with her mindset on stuff. She said that her new years resolution is to pass on the encouragement to others.
You are truly reaching people, Dawn. Thank you for what u do! ❤

It seems the crazier the world gets, the more we all crave peace and simplicity at home. I definitely need to declutter. Thanks for the advice and encouragement! ❤
When my kids were little I used the over the door shoe holders that had the mesh (breathable) pockets. Each kid got a row that was theirs. Their winter hat went in 1 pocket, pair of gloves in 1 pocket, etc
The top rows were for myself and my husband. When my husband came home from work he threw his sunglasses and wallet in a pocket in his row. It kept everyone from having an extreme amount of hats or gloves and they were always put away because it was easy to do and easy to find.
It was the best system I ever put in place!
Ohhh what a great idea!
I have a clear 15 pocket one on the inside of our entry closet door .
I call it the grab and go:
One med weight hat and gloves each, plus a row of flip flops in summer or HEAVY gloves and ice spikes in winter.
The bottom rows never change:
1-Sunscreen&bug spray. 2-Membership cards& Coupons.
3-All spare Keys
4-Locks:luggage, padlocks, key lanyards
5-ponchos
6-tour books & Maps for our many road trips
7- small gym towel& heart rate monitor
2 for my pickleball court shoes
Plus One empty for an as needed
Great idea!
I did the same thing!
That is genius
Traded out my old dishes for Corelle and they are a total game changer! I love how light and easy they are to clean, stack, and handle, yet they don’t break, even with young kids. Thanks Dawn!
They can break on super solid flooring and if they are old. My mom had them for years and then suddenly one day one shattered and it was scary how tiny the shards were. She still keeps them, just be aware when they break to be careful when you have to clean it up. Other than that they are very durable!
I did that in 2022 also. Winter White Corelle. Best decision ever!!!
Yes, me too! I don't have to move dishes around in the cupboard anymore to get at things because the thin plates/bowls make tiny, tidy stacks. They rarely break even when I drop one.
Corelle is hard to break, but when it does, man, it shatters into a billion tiny pieces. We switched out our fiesta ware for Corelle though and I love how light it is. Takes up less space, hurts my shoulders less to unload the dishwasher
I did the same thing and got rid of my old ones they were too heavy and were all different shapes wouldn’t stack nicely, now with the Corelle I ended up with so much empty space in my cabinet, Im loving them. ❤
I have a tip for more volume or visual thickening of ones hair. Without buying extra products. Changing the parting of your hair once in a while. The parting thins the hair a bit over time, so changing it up makes it look like your hair is thicker.
Another tip is for when blowdrying in particular the front and great for fringes too; first take the lower layers, the ones close to your head, blowdry them outwards away from head, then take the toplayer and do the opposite. Best done with a roundbrush.
It will create a little eyeshaped pocket of air between the layers. I suffer from alopecia areata, so i've experimented a ton with ways to hide the bald spots and compensate for the loss of volume. Hope this is usefull for anyone.
Dawn, I 've gotten so much from your channel since finding it last year - thank you! I'm no poet, but a couple days ago this came to me and I wanted to share:
Clutter
I can't move,
Not freely, like dancing through the world.
I can't see,
Not clearly, without fog to obscure.
I can't hear,
Not thoughts of new possibility.
I can't grow.
I am touching this container's walls.
This space constrains.
There is too much.
Too much and too little.
My things, they...
MY things?
No.
Possession is a false concept, is it not?
THE things around me
In this house I occupy...
They block my path,
make me reach around
to what is needed.
They block my view,
So that all I see
Is what I can't use.
They yell at me:
Demanding action,
Taunting, laying blame.
They keep me small,
Focused on what's here.
Not on what could be.
I will clear this space,
Bring in air that's fresh,
And begin to dance.
-Jodi Callahan
Beautiful poem 😊
@@littlebungalowinthewoods858 thank you 😊
Fabulous. It very effectively captures a distinct feeling.
Hi Dawn, I owned and baked for our restaurant for 13 years. We made over 100 loaves of homemade bread each week. White, wheat, Rye and raisin. In order to keep the bread fresh after baking we would let it cool & slice them and immediately put them in bread bags & into the freezer. So I thought for your sourdough you could do the same! When you need bread for toast or a sandwich you just pull out the amount of slices needed. Homemade bread has no preservatives to keep it from molding and no bread softener to keep it soft! It’s so much healthier for us! The freezer keeps it fresh for weeks but we always went through it quickly. ❤️
And PLEASE do not refrigerate… unless you enjoy dried out bread.
This is a GREAT idea!!! Thank you!!!
Freeze mine all the time. Wrapped properly, it thaws nicely.
@@TheMinimalMomand sourdough bread can be a migraine trigger. It is for me.
I was just wondering the best way to store my sourdough bread. Thank you!
My son who is a CPA uses the expression A SUNK COST for anything we buy but later don’t use! Whether we keep it or not we don’t get our money back!!!! I donate so much more now! And just try not to make the same mistakes twice!!!!😊Thanks Dawn! ❤️
Thanks, will remember A Sunk Cost.
Sunk cost? Please explain
The sunk cost fallacy is when you keep something "because you spent money(or other resources) on it" when in truth you are no longer getting any value out of owning that item.
Dawn, you give permission so much. I give you permission to buy the expensive dry shampoo instead of spending money on cheap ones you dont like and storing them. If something you like and work is pricey buy it rather then spending on cheap stuff😂
If you don't want to unnecessarily scratch your non-stick pan place a pot holder in it before you stack other pans in it, just a thought. Cheap pot holders from the Dollar store work just fine for that.
Or a clean cotton rag from an old Tshirt of towel. THese things do not need to be bought especially and you can cut them to look nice.
Also pieces of felt or dishclothes (may cost a wee bit more, but thinner and may help take up less space if that is a concern).
My mother in law made dish clothes crocheted from cotton yarn.Sadly, she has passed away, so I won't be getting any new ones from her. So, when they become tattered, this is what I've done with the ones I no longer use for dishes. This way I can keep them, and my pans are protected.
I found some felt pan protectors that are thin and made to go in between pans. Not expensive and have lasted for years.
I use a paper towel till it falls apart!
Ive been married for 11 years and do 100% of the cooking and have never once owned a pot holder. I just use a towel. I don’t get burnt either. One less thing 🙌🏻
Decluttering not only makes my house clean and tidy, it makes it easy for me to think clearly with intention. Awesome video.
"I'm prioritizing peace in our home over possessions" ... love this mantra!
😅 Families with members who refuse to wash dishes are a great candidate for one place setting per person, each with their own color - and no borrowing!
We need a separate video on how not to be influenced by influencers. If we can ignore them… our gatekeeping would be so much better. We need to be better gate keepers of clutter in the first place. This was a fun video!!! And always helpful and motivating!!! HNY Dawn!!!
Stop watching them 😉
There are some you tubers who do videos like that. They talk about things they were influenced to buy and regret. I just started watching some so don’t know enough to recommend, but if you search de influence you can find some.
Anti hauls
Kimberly Clark just started a series called "How to stop shopping"
Great idea👍👍👍
The long form videos are very handy as a 'body doubling' replacement - I seldom have the bandwidth for decluttering AND socialising so, for me, long form is a welcome and well used tool. Best of luck with your projects, folks, you're doing great!
I use it as my body double also 😂. I have issues with having other people in my "safe space"
Had to tell you - we’ve been on a 2+ year journey following your channel and regularly decluttering. Last week I placed a quarantine tub in the hallway & mentioned it to my 9 year old. She announced yesterday that she & her 7 year old sister were going to go through their toys this weekend (they share a bedroom) AND THEY DID TODAY!!! They filled 2 bins joyfully & on their own. I am so delighted & shocked too. They were so happy in their room afterwards. Thank you for all of your suggestions and time in filming. It’s so neat to see this fruit of hard work and patterns over the last years.
That's wonderful!!
Another good one Dawn. I believe you said a key word in this one: Always. We are "always" decluttering, minimizing, trashing, re-organizing, and just tidying up generally. We "always" will be and it's a different mind-set once you realize that the everyday or every week tidy will never be done. But it gets soooo much easier with less to tidy. Keep going girl!
Makes me feel good that Dawn still has more to declutter!
Just love how she calms an entire day I don't even need to write because she is pushing me to declutter into the next day, sending items to charity more quickly, and I am grateful to find her sweet ability each time I find this online. Our next generation will be relieved I won't leave the clutter for them to undo.
I switched to 1 set of all silicon oven mitts. Quick rinse if they get messy and they don’t need to be laundered.
Dawn, you are so right about books! This is coming from a woman who has several thousand of them. :) If you read every day, and you have the space to actually have your books organized and accessible on shelves- great! I have a dedicated library room and it gets used constantly, and I thoroughly enjoy maintaining it . But if you don't have time to read them, or the space to keep them, forget it! I totally support you getting rid of those crates of books you weren't accessing- books don't belong under the bed. A nice clean under bed space is going to feel great- it's hard to vacuum around crates. ❤️
I'm an avid book reader but unfortunately my vision is getting bad (even with glasses) so I've resolved myself to read mostly from an e-reader as I can enlarge the text and change the font to my preference. I do love the look of books on a shelf though so I sorted through my hundreds and hundreds of books and slowly donated 90% of them and only kept my absolute favourites and the ones I've had and read over and over since I was a kid/teen and have them proudly displayed in my bedroom in cube shelves. It was honestly so hard to get rid of them, but since they're no longer being used by myself, I had to let them go.
@@catlady9123 that was smart- and having the remaining sentimental ones displayed nicely is so great, they are serving the purpose of decoration and reminding you of fond memories. I don't actually sit down and read my childhood books either, but just pulling them out occasionally and looking at the covers (or even smelling the pages, lol) makes me happy. It's therapy!
It would be fun to use the 500 item list as a scavenger hunt 😊
That's actually a brilliant idea and you're right, it would be fun! 😂
I love this! Such a great idea with kids
or to donate to a shelter 💕
As I've been decluttering the last few days, every time I see something that I think I could use, I say to myself "Everybody's so creative!" It's really helped me to get rid of those little things that would trip me up in the past. Yes, I can find many uses for random things, but it's time to let go.
My mantra is: Put it away, give it away, or throw it away. For right now, those are the only choices.
You aren’t trying to sell anything? I get the feeling from Dawn that the higher value is peace. I do have to say planning to sell and then it doesn’t happen keeps my house too full.
Personally I have found I prefer to donate rather than deal w trying to sell.
The peace I feel when you show a shot of your room clean and clutter free is exactly what I need to inspire me to go deeper!
Thanks for sharing your success and being real in the process.
Dawn, I've been working on getting through the decluttering onion and STILL had a good laugh yesterday. My five year old and I found a pile of scattered cards for a game we've NEVER played. We've had the cards for years. We've moved the
cards THREE TIMES. It was a classic case of fantasy self. Every time I saw the cards I felt guilty that I wasn't playing more card games... so we finally said goodbye to them!
You might consider an aloe plant for the bathroom! Low maintenance, air purifying, and ongoing aloe supply. 😉
My Grandma bought me a set of Corelle dishes when I went to college. I still have them nearly a decade later. I have carpel tunnel, and I love how light they are! Sister wasn't fond of the feel until she dropped a plate and it bounced around the sink like a ping pong ball, and came out unscathed. I was so happy the day I got to trade the chipped stoneware for white melamine!
True confession: I moved in a hurry and the pots and pans got packed in boxes I didn't now where. I bought two new ones, to use "in the meantime." Three years later, decluttering the garage, we happened upon a TON of pans. They got donated. I only missed ONE of them, which I kept. I didn't need most of them, which leaves me wondering, how much else don't I need. A LOT!
Something similar happened to me, we didn't move, but packed our kitchen up for a full remodel 3 years ago and somehow 1 box got misplaced and ended up in our storage shed behind other things. I found it again last summer and the only thing inside I had replaced was my favourite ceramic bread pans, but my replacements were a cheap aluminium so as soon as I got my hands on my good ones, the cheap ones went to the thrift store along with the rest of the box that had nothing else that I missed in it and honestly, I couldn't even tell you what else was in there because it was so insignificant.
Hey girl! The mice are coming in because resources are scarce in the winter and they’re desperate- it’s not you. Can they be attracted to messes? Yeah, of course, but in winter all the critters get desperate and try to come in.
Yuck! I'm terrified of them. It's very motivating to help me de-hoard. I know they love paper & cardboard
I'm in the beginning stage and over my Christmas break I completely purged my kitchen and it felt WONDERFUL!!! Thank you so much!
That is awesome!!! Way to go! I'm really excited for you!
Hi Dawn!
I know it's silly but I just love it when you say "Permission to let go of XXX" I really need to hear that over and over again to feel it in my heart as I try to declutter my life.
So, thank you ❤
Yes! So funny why that works, but it sure does! Very helpful.
We did the same thing with one place setting per person. We got the corral dishes in plain white, and then I took a marker made for ceramics and I wrote each person's name on the outside. I ended up putting people's names on them because people kept saying that they washed their dish when they didn't. So now we know who didn't wash their dish. 😂
I also have a set of dishes put away if we have guests, but we usually use disposable paper plates when we have guests. This has been a total game changer for our family at five.
😂😂😂😂😂❤
getting rid of my music and book collections (and a masssivveeee VHS collection!!) was the hardest. thing. ever.
I've only missed a few books which I would then purchased on my iPad.
they were all second-hand anyhow...
ALL OF IT was second hand and ALL OF IT went back to the thrift store.
I've seen lots of them on the shelves a month later
You have a lovely home Dawn. One thing you have shown on this Channel truly is Kids do not need a huge room , it is about inventory . Also you have shown that kids do not need tons of stuff. Your kids have plenty but as you have said kids only play with a certain portion of things anyway. It starts with us as parents realizing they do not have to have everything they want or have a tons of toys. They can make wonderful memories by playing outside , of course when the weather is nice. Also using their imaginations. In society today somehow we are fed this idea we have to have big big homes to hold all our junk that many times we are not even using. I am one too that sees no point in storing stuff or saving a bunch of stuff. many times as we get older our kids really do not want a lot of our stuff or their taste may be different. So it makes sense to just keep what we like and use and let the rest go. I mean honestly the world produces way to much stuff and if we give somewhere away and later need it we normally can find something again used or a good price. So thank you for all you share on your channel it does help.
Thank you !
I like the phase “ Experiments happen in the bathroom “
That takes the guilt away !
My home is getting highly simplified ❤️
I reduced our household down from 1200 sqft to under 200 sqft when we retired (fulltime rv retirement traveling - for 12 years!)
1 1/2 yrs ago we resettled down to a house again, but still only added the few things that we missed & didnt have to room for while traveling. So between Christmas & New Year's day I went thru every drawer, cupboard,... to clean & declutter. I'm donating two boxes & a large bag of various items! Thanks for the help & encouragement!😊
When we moved from a small city to an old ranch we learned about dealing with mice getting inside, mostly under the sink. Having bins underneath makes it so much easier to clean & disinfect when critters have been visiting!!! Also, it's easier to spot "evidence" right away and easier to set/remove traps safely.
I appreciate that you took the time to explain which helped us to absorb each category. Some just list off items, making it hard to wrap our heads around.
Put your dryer balls inside a garments bag when running a drying cycle. I heard this recently and it has been so nice to have them all together and not fish them out.
Thanks!
Mice get in usually around either pipes (stuff steel wool to block them)or under a door(carefully stick heavy duty door draft strip to block them there, reinforce with a couple of nails). They can get in through surprisingly small openings but can be blocked from entry if you figure where they are getting in.
We have a new garage getting done taking way too long but mice were in our garage when it got demolished they moved into the house. They got into everything and it nearly caused me a nervous breakdown. I have too much stuff in my laundry and atm can’t get in there but I am clean so they got into my pantry. Lucky I had mostly Tupperware containers but I had to clean everything with bleach. My husband wanted me to clean out the corner cupboard as door isn’t shutting (he broke it in a anger fit it’s not that it’s not shutting from the stuff) I saw some mouse Poo in there so I must have missed this cupboard. I can’t bring myself to do it any tips from anyone how I can start this
Wear a mask and gloves when dealing with it. Be sure you find out how they are getting in and block them or you will have reoccurring mice and they will get into more than your kitchen-they ate my photos in the top drawer of my dresser! It turned out thet were getting i n through a small gap under the door to the basement as well as around a pipe under our sink! Look for any cracks inside your cabinets where they could be coming in from in the walls too. Use those draft strips or a board on the bottom of any door they might be coming in. Shove steel wool around pipes as they hate chewing on it. Seal any cracks. These are the cruelty free, non toxic measures, but there are various other things available depending on what is happening. aIn the meantime, you are smart to keep foods in lidded tubs, also other things that need to be kept clean while you try to get the mice out. If your husband has an anger issue with the corner cabinet I would empty it out and not use it at all. Especially if the door is broken, and it is easy for mice to get in and hard for you to use anyway.
Wow that was great! Thank you so much for being so thorough and giving examples. I appreciate you saying “permission to let go!” It is very freeing to hear someone else saying it.
Girl you made my cry when you talked through the throw pillow memory. So relatable. Thank you for modeling a healthy way to work through those emotions.
I have nothing left to declutter but adore you so much, I'm here for it!! ❤
Thank you for always being an inspiration and encouraging us to have more peaceful homes. And for taking away the guilt! You are a blessing!
We went from super minimalist(and I loved it!!) to a house overflowing and a mom drowing in stuff again in 3 year. Moved countries and into a house about 3 times the size of our previous one. So I set out making it 'homey' 😭. Now I'm pregnant with #5 and I HAVE TO GET STUFF OUT before this baby is born, otherwise I might just loose my mind. Wish me luck. Thankfully I still love decluttering, just haven't kept up as I should have. 😎
One in use and a spare….I use this for things I buy as a single item (eg. toothpaste, ketchup). When you start to use the spare, add it to the shopping list. Training is required for getting family members to understand the concept! Also they need to understand that if they add the item to the shopping list it doesn’t get replaced immediately, waiting is required for the weekly shop to be done. Love everything you inspire. Happy New Year.
I love the premise of this video; the if you’re starting vs looking to go further. This weekend I plan to bring things to the donation center so I’ve been looking for extra things to declutter. Each day searching in a different room. Thank you!
Love this video! Really loved how you had ideas for the Newbie declutters and then a deeper layer for those who are wanting to go deeper. Would love to see more videos like this.
We do not have a basement where I live. However, we have a huge walk-in closet that I designed with shelves and drawers. This is our basement. LOL. I did a huge organization of our pantry, and I moved all of my husband's kitchen gadgets that he does not use every day. When I finished, he was happy. He realized that by having them in the closet and not in the back of our pantry, they are easier to get to when he needs them. Yes, he is the cook in our house. The other plus side of this is that I have been decluttering my clothes, jewelry, shoes, and accessories. Win-Win!
As a start watching her videos yesterday, I started opening my closet and drawers and declutter began! Almost done with my entire house 🏠 Thank you ❤❤❤
We don’t even have any pot holders. Whenever I cook I use a towel or whatever. I used to buy them and my kids used them to play outside with. I honestly don’t understand why. But they ruined every single one so I quit. 😂
Also… the magic is in the motion not the potion. Except for comet. Comet will get a stained bathtub so clean and barkeepers friend slays on stainless steel🤩
Just want to say how helpful it is to watch your videos when I try to clean. It is wonderful to be reminded that I don't have to be "perfect" to deserve clothes that fit now or that the things I need in the future will come when I need them.
Dawn- I noticed in video regarding one idea to prevent scratches is when putting away your non-stick pan, lay a paper towel or a cloth in the pan if you put other items stacked inside - your pans won’t get scratched or dented
I love that you talk about seasons of life. Before kids I decorated my home, had decor items on coffee tables etc.But two boys later, homeschooling, chauffeuring kids around, working part time etc I got rid of so much decor. It took time
and energy to manage and clean etc. Now that our sons have grown I have started decorating our home again. It makes it cozier and I have the time and energy to manage it. I am very particular about what I bring into our home and everything I do is very intentional. Something I learned from watching you.
Dawn, I'm so happy you mentioned mice in the winter. We live in suburban NH and get mice every winter as well. There was one year that we noticed they were getting into our cabinets which was a real pain. However, we solved that problem by wrapping all of the water or drain pipes coming into the cabinets with steel wool. We have even wrapped all of the heating pipes (we have forced hot water) on all floors so that they can't follow that pipe up. We no longer have any getting through from the basement. They don't like steel wool and have found it to be a great barrier between the main floor living space and the basement which is where they are getting in.
Because of the mice, I would suggest putting items into glass jars or metal tins as soon as you bring the food home. The food doesn't cause the mice problem, but you want to keep the mice away from any of your food. Mice and Rats can chew through plastic.
Dawn, thank you for giving us a glimpse of the way your home is set up. You are being vulnerable by that gesture while providing us well thought provoking reasons to declutter “ruthless”. I appreciate you so much!
Much love from a (homeschooling mom of 3 young kids- blessed by simplifying my home with your helpful input) fan!
Paused mid-way through to say, you are just such a delight! Friendly, warm, encouraging, and such a great laugh. Love your work xx
I like taking my extra beauty products to my local gym. I leave a sticky note saying “Free”. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure. I’ve gotten to try beauty products too!
I have a dishcloth/ hand towel addiction. We are a family of 10 and homeschool and I never buy paper towels . I couldn't imagine only having 4, I think I have 20 and I replace them often. That's amazing that you have had them since your wedding! ! Thank you for the encouragement Dawn you are a very special lady!
Same here😂
Me too!
I use shop towels from Costco mostly, they are 100% cotten and come in a 52 pack. Of course i have nice towels too…but the shop towels are great for everyday :)
The pillow...IT HAS TURNED INTO CLUTTER...super helpful!!!
I just went through this with the 7 blue binders that held all the research that I did for a decade!!
I literally let them all go this last week...I had SO many emotions to process...I am really grateful that I did...still managing some emotions but I know it will get easier as time goes by...it's a mourning process to go threw.
I had the same issue letting go of photos. I went from 7500 to 2500. Oh the guilt😢. Fast forward a week later and I’m so glad I did it! We now get the albums out almost every day (autistic daughter loves to see them). It was the guilt as they were disposed of that was the hardest. Once that had subsided the relief flooded in. Hope this happens to you too.❤😊
I laughed SO hard at the end when she said she had "5 sweatshirts, there's 4 here and 1 is in the wash. wait, no, I'm wearing it." LOL I'm glad that made it through editing it was so cute.
Kindle/Audible is an excellent alternative to an over abundance of books. I definitely understand the love of “real” books but I prefer having a house not over run by book shelves. And reading via Audible allows me to read and still accomplish stuff. 😊
You’ve helped me so much. My 12 year daughter doesn’t like it so much but, this is my home. Last year, I had both my mom and dads urns and I had a wall and table next to the wall that we all called the “mamaw and papaw”wall and table. They passed in 2014 and 2015. I had a hard time letting them go but, thanks to you, I gave them to my sisters. 😊. I’ve decluttered so much and I still have much more too decluttering. I’ve taken most of my pics of mom and dad down. I’ve donated LOTS of things. I haven’t even finished this video, and I’ve got a tally in my fridge to get rid of 500 things! My daughter got upset when I told her that we were gonna get rid 500 things but, I told her that it’s not gonna be super special things. It’s gonna be things that we won’t even miss. Thank you 😊 ❤
Oh wow, this is so good! Way to go...it's not easy and it takes time, but I'm really excited for you! (And say hi to your daughter for me!)
Does your daughter have a memory bin? Knowing the items she cares about most are safe in that bin and will not be decluttered might make it easier for her to let other stuff go
Please be mindful of her because you could trigger a sense of loss that in turn causes her to never want to let go of anything and can turn jnto hoarding in her adult years.
@@danaberriesit’s ok, she’ll be fine she will see in time that she benefits from it, the memories and very important things will always be there, but items do eventually turn to dust you don’t gain anything from holding onto items like that
One thing that worked with my kids was just setting the boundaries/limits and then letting the kids chose what to keep and what to get rid of-like “the big bookcase is the limit” go through your books and put the ones you like best on the shelves of the book case and we will donate the rest” then I had to hero their choices which can be the hard part but it is important
Wow, thank you! We know that in a short while we will be making a big transition in our lives. My husband turns 70 this year and we are missionaries. Your videos are so helpful in helping me to sort and throw out and view things differently. Have ordered the book from Peter Walsh to help me with the sentimental items.
Reject shampoos I add to liquid laundry soap bottles. Even if they smell, they rinse out well.
I’m glad she gave me permission to just throw things away. I’m 74 and it was a game changer 0:05 for me to pare down to essentials.
One comment from a thrift store employee about not giving them stained or chipped things because it cost them money to throw it out was helpful also.
Outer Order Inner Calm is an amazing book. I read it at least once a year as a reminder of why I get rid of things I no longer use. Gretchen Rubin’s other books area also a great read.
Dear Dawn, first of all - you look beautiful! Love your new hair style. And second of all - it is such a pleasure to watch you! Such a warm sincere manner of talking, it gets to the heart. With your help I already decreased my pots and pans and other kitchenware. I actually decluttered almost the whole house, except one scary "Monica"-closet, that somehow keeps getting stuffed over and over again in spite of regular cleaning stages... Thank you for being so motivating and energizing. ❤
Wow, this is so awesome to hear! And THANK YOU for the kind words, it means more than you know!!!
TY for a laugh. "Monica Closet" 😂
TY for a laugh. "Monica Closet" 😂

TY for a laugh. "Monica Closet" 😂
Dawn, I always love your living room. It's perfect for LIVING in.
Thank you Dawn for doing these videos. You have so inspired me and my house is getting better all the time. I've been watching for a few years now. When I'm busy decluttering I often hear you in my head and it helps me ditch stuff rather than setting it aside to decide later. Yay Dawn! Want you to know how much you help people.
I love the new room! I am so thankful you gave yourself permission to make a space for you. You deserve it.
As for decor on flat surfaces my limit is three because that's all I'm willing to move when I dust.
I heard your comment about sourdough and headaches. Have you tried using only ancient grains (einkorn, spelt (our fav.) and Kamut) instead? Regular wheat was hybridized in the 50s and has a super complex gluten structure that our bodies can't breakdown properly (hence so many people are "gluten intolerant" these days. We switched (and mill our own flour as there's an additive in Canadian flour) and it's been a game changer for our family! No more symptoms!! Also I want to say THANKYOU for everything you shared about minimalism!!! You walked me though kitchen, kids clothes, etc. and now we've been loving our home for the past 4 years!!!!!! It's so easy to pick up and not overwhelming!!! Thank-you!!!!
The baskets in the corner cabinets in the kitchen CHANGED THE GAME for me!! My husband came downstairs New Year's morning to me using the power screwdriver to unscrew our lazy susan and yank it out of the cabinet! Lol the baskets are so much nicer!
The Corelle Vitrelle is fantastic!! Lasts and looks great for a very long time! I've had mine for 12 years! Also, I chuckled that you use Dawn dish detergent and Tom's toothpaste 😉👍
I have started using washer sheets. They are a little more expensive, but stacking the boxes in a cabinet is very organized and I don't have all the big plastic bottles to recycle. The washer sheets boxes are much easier to recycle.
Over the past couple of months I have decluttered my whole house & have become a minimalist all because of your videos! Life is so much better! Thank you Dawn, you are a Blessing! ❤❤
Thankful for another long video to listen to while I work! ❤
I have my potholders up with command hooks on the inside of my cabinets. That would free up that drawer! Lol
Me too. Where and when I need them!
Just to note, the space you’re keeping your casserole dishes is the warming drawer for most people. It is used to keep prepared foods warm while you finish cooking other items (think Thanksgiving and Christmas) or to keep a plate of food warm for up to an hour. You can even use it to proof your dough.
If you have controls/knobs stating “warming drawer” (or more recently “broiler”), do not store anything in it.
😂 right!!!
Ugh, decor. I want to also add while I love seeing other people's wallpaper drapes, rugs, etc, I don't like having prints in my home. But so lovely to look at and admire!
I love this video so much! Your videos you did each day just after Christmas were fabulous and totally inspired me! I went through my closet and donated 6 garbage bags of clothes I no longer wore. I moved on to declutter other things and had 5 boxes of things to donate - including 60 DVDs!!! I am still purging and loving the feeling of peace it is bringing! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!! ❤
I love you Dawn, I love ALL of the Decluttering Queens from Take Back Your House..,
Our family cooks, and so although we have 2 stock pots, when we make spaghetti and homemade spaghetti sauce, we use BOTH. We have 2 ceramic frying pans and we use both. We have 3 small 1 1/2 and 2 quart pots and use all 3. We even have a huge stainless steel pan that looks like a wok with a handle and use that.
Then we have an instapot we use at least once if not twice weekly.
Many of your tips have been Clutter BUSTERS for sure! 👌
But 5 pans would not work for us.
But, thanks to you 3 👑👑👑, EVERY pan we have we USE. and GONE are the scratched pans, unused pots and pans, extra lids and much more 🎉
58:24 so true that parents sometimes cling to things more than children.❤ Recently, I put some old games from my childhood in a donation box and some days later I saw them again in my mother's cupboard. 😂 Apparently, she took them out of the donation box because she would like to keep them. I did not say anything to her, because she bought those things many year's ago for me, so theoretically, it is her stuff, isn't it?🤔
Thank you so much, I am clearing 20 years of clutter out of our house. It's truly amazing how wonderful it feels. You are so cheerful!
I have a disability and break dishes often. If i don’t care about them i don’t replace them but I noticed the Corel shatters into a million tiny pieces when it breaks. Plastic warps and stains and probably isn’t that healthy so I went back to traditional stoneware plates. We have lots of get togethers at our house and I am anti paper plates for many reasons (no judgement on anyone else just a personal preference.). Plates don’t take up tons of space so i don’t have a problem keeping extras. I do use the container rule for the number of glasses we keep and I hang my coffee cups for organizing purposes. I also have multiple large specialty pots that I keep because they serve a purpose that other pots wouldn’t. Otherwise I completely agree with ur dish inventory assessment because less dishes can’t get piled up too badly. I appreciate that feeling u give off that do what works for u and spend 15 minutes to just reorganize an area that isn’t functioning
Yes please donate lids! I needed a particular lid and I went thrifting to find one, went 3 places till I found it!
Hint about Dawn powerwash, use it to clean the tub! No toxic fumes, just rinse well
We have a small kitchen. Our house rule is we cannot have more pots & pans than we have burners. So we can have 4 total. We also switched to full size RV & camping cooking & baking because they nest inside each other nicely.
When you’re ready to toss/ upgrade your pot holder mitts, I recommend the silicone mitts because they wipe clean 😁
You can make your own Dawn power wash and refill the bottle. 2 TBSP Dawn dish soap · 1 TBSP Isopropyl 70% Alcohol and water.
I just do dish soap and water and it works great. I’ve refilled it so many times.
♥️I was telling Cass that I’m trying not to set goals or resolutions this year and instead have a word for the year. My word is “Consistency” and I want to consistently declutter each day for at least 30 minutes a day in hopes that by the end of the year I will not have failed my goal.? Focusing on my one word may bring me closer to a decluttered home this year.
Thank you so much for your videos! I am also a homeschooling mom of many, and I find this very helpful to keep me on track. I have always cleaned our home out but really working on keeping extras from coming back in. I have been working on grief on top of this (my eldest passed on 4 years ago) I find myself fearing loss, so it makes me stagnant in some areas. I am making progress despite this. I use writing as a therapeutic tool which also helps.
