Assalamualikum…..I’m really confused about the the pronunciation of أُوْتو? Can you sound it out? I see alif hamza with damma? How is this possible to have a short vowel on a long vowel alif. What sound would it make? What’s the alif at the end for if it’s not pronounced?Just please help me with the pronunciation! Shukran!
Walaikum assalam warahmatullah. First we must differentiate between the hamza and the alif in the Quran. The letter alif of madd never takes a harakah (for example the را) The hamza does take a harakah (أَنعَمْتَ) the first letter of this word is a hamza. As for the word (أُوتُوا) there is a hamza at the beginning of the word (note that the alif in this case is simply a place for the hamza to stand on). Therefore we can place a harakah (in this case a damma) on it, followed by a waw which makes it a madd badal (listen to it at 0:30) As for the last letter of (أُوتُواْ), note that any letter in the mus’haf with a circular sukoon on it is silent, so the word is pronounced “أُوتُو.” Look for a full explanation in upcoming videos. The alif at the end of this word is a grammatical sign to indicate a plural verb.
Madd al-badal is a type of madd asli. So madd al badal can be categorized as madd asli. Madd tabe’ee is also a type of madd asli but we would not refer to madd badal as tabee’ee because it falls under a different definition.
Assalaamu alaikum.. Sis.. What happens when hamza and harf madd comes at the last of the letter in that case how do u wakf and wasl it.. Could you plz reply sis..
وعليكم السلام ورحمة الله وبركاته There are a couple of cases that would answer your question, keeping in mind that we are covering the recitation of Hafs. 1. In the case that the madd badal comes right before a stop, then the madd would be two counts at a stop. An example of this is the word (أساؤوا) in ayah 31 of Surat Al-Najm. 2. In the words (يُرَاؤُون) and (خَاطِئِين) the madd would be “madd badal” and stretch two counts if you continue without stopping. At a stop it would be “madd aarid” and would be stretched two, four, or six counts according to the recitation (please see our video al Madd al Aarid (temporary madd) to review that concept). We hope this answers your question. If you have a specific example you would like us to explain please let us know.
