    Girlie I’m so sorry this happened to you. As a non -black ,Hispanic person I really had a reckoning of race privilege. Especially as a naive kid growing up in Cali who was brainwashed into this Idea of a post racial society MLK I have a dream etc. I also was fed the narrative that community colleges are beneath us because anyone can get in and I had a 3.8 gpa and perfect attendance for 7 years. After flunking out of an expensive private college in PA it humbled me so much to attend a diverse community college for a free. I honestly kinda regret working myself so hard in middle school and hs to compete with other students to go to a school that accepts only 25% applicants because of elitism and the myth of meritocracy. I had my whole world turned upside down when I was told I didn’t just get to where I was because of my talent and hard work. It felt like being told I was adopted.

    As an asian coming from a highschool and community that is predominantly black and hispanic, I'm thinking whether or not to attend ucsb. Thank for you this

    I think it's really wise and mature for you to recognize that UCSB wasn't a good fit for you at this time (or in general), especially in terms of the racism you experienced and the school's very hands-off approach to education, rather than continuing to spend energy and money on something that ultimately wouldn't leave you happy in the long run. I truly hope that you didn't feel any kind of unequal treatment by me or Mary within the class, you really are one of the best, most vibrant and memorable students I ever got to teach in chemistry. I really do believe you'll find success on your own terms as a writer and believe you'll do great in communication studies and your future endeavors at CC! Wishing you the best from over here, and thank you for giving me the pleasure of being able to meet you.

    Thank you for sharing your story! I’m from a super small town that’s not diverse at all so coming to UCSB I was like wow I love being someone so much more diverse. It’s interesting to hear your side of it and you coming from a place far more diverse. I’m sorry you had this experience it’s horrible. I also am a communication major and had to switch majors at UCSB since it’s so difficult to get into the comm major. I wish you the best of luck in everything you do !

    Girl I felt the same way the whole first quarter😩 I come from South LA so it was something different for me. I remember saying hi to people the first week and being ignored, and still on to winter quarter. Im glad I have the friends I have cuz they pushed me through it (plus I just said f it lol). It’s sad to see you withdrew☹️ You seem like a really nice and fun person, I would’ve loved to hang out with you. Good luck on your journey! I see potential!!❤️

    I know you say UCSB is heavily white, but aren't there also a lot of Hispanic students there? I say this because it is officially a "Hispanic serving institution", meaning it is over 25% Hispanic. Also, isn't there a sizable Asian population at UCSB? I know a lot of white people go there, but I also know it is heavily Hispanic and Asian. I do agree the black/African-American population at UCSB is fairly small.

      It’s as if you’re under the premise that a Hispanic presence would change how she feels lol like where’s the relevance ?

      In my experience, Asian and Hispanics have gone out of their way to make me feel just as uncomfortable in spaces.

    Thank you for talking about the lack of diversity at UCSB. I’m looking to transfer possibly to UCSB from my college in the Midwest (also mostly white) and I also started to miss the diversity back in my area of California (not so diverse but a little more than the Midwest). I didn’t know that it affected me so much. I’m biracial so I had trouble since elementary school fitting in with everyone else, so for my college experience, which is supposed to be great, I don’t want to feel the same alienation again.
    I hope things are looking better for you and I’m glad you figured out that UCSB wasn’t the place for you!! 💖

      Yes being biracial is definitely not an easy thing but it’s a beautiful and wonderful journey all together. I believe that everyone’s experience is different and my advice would be just to trust your intuition and what you think is best for you! Thank you so much for watching! I hope your college experience is everything you wish for♥️

    How was the withdrawal process? I’m trying to go to a CC in the fall semester and I’m trying to withdrawal before the spring quarter. Also, I go to UCSB too and really want to know how hard it was (the withdrawal process, financial aid) etc. Please respond! Thank you for making this video, it made me feel even better about my decision of withdrawing.

      Also did you withdrawal between fall and winter quarter?

    • @lifewithlayy7908
      @lifewithlayy7908  4 года назад

      Hi Colleen! The withdrawl process is super easy! All you do is go to office of admissions you fill out the withdraw form and you get signatures from like the financial aid office, housing, and the student health center. It’s a big step but I’m proud of you for making this decision for yourself! I hope this helps and goodluck with everything 💙💛

    Is there a black community at UCSB/ how hard is it to make friends?

    • @lifewithlayy7908
      @lifewithlayy7908  3 года назад

      Hi Michael! I stayed at the black scholars hall so finding the black community at UCSB was not hard for me at all since we were basically in the same area! I definitely would recommend this especially if you are a first year and are looking to be in this community. Hope this helps and good luck :)
