Appreciate the care you take when releasing the shorts An idea came to mind, attach a second rope to the bottom of the bucket so when you lift by that rope the bucket comes back upside down Fellow crab snarer from CA 👍
@@WAFishQuest I always wince every time we toss crabs from the piers and hear that loud smack when they hit the water..some of the piers I go to are 50 feet+ up Thanks for showing the bucket idea, going to use it my next time out Also quick idea - I use those folding buckets from Amazon for like ten buck..super light and so far pretty sturdy Good luck and hope you get those gauge busters!
On a bait caster, as your jig or weight is going down, you can take your thumb off the spool. There is a consent force or speed acceleration of the jig that you can it let go until it hits the water.
You have a good point. I also have anxiety about that. That's why I do the rope thing. If I walked back to shallow water I'm afraid a warden would ticket me, thinking I was trying to leave with the crab. I suppose there is some risk. One would hope with the rope and returning them immediately the risk is almost 0. But it is not 0. I'm willing to risk it for the crab. But I'm sure many people wouldn't. I appreciate your comment! If I do a followup, which I probably will, I'll speak to it so people are aware there is a slight risk. Thank you!
Hey Willipa Photo! It has stabilizer/tilt lock that will keep it generally level. I just checked tho, and do not believe it has a horizon auto leveling function.
Blake do you know anything about the other entrance of the eastern portion of the marina they call Firecracker point? I can't find any info on that and was very curious. Thanks again for the public service you do!
Thank you so much for posting this, buh-LAWH-kay. A friend of mine just gave me a snare and I have yet to cast it off the south jetty near the public restrooms here in Newport’s Yaquina Bay. But this inspires me! Love all your videos.
Thanks a ton Ryan! I really appreciate the comment and viewership! Indeed it is the best port! Maybe we can team up for a class action lawsuit if ANYONE disagrees.
The sound of a large level wind reel with the ‘Clicker on’, that is one sexy sound. I have had a heck of a time with store bought bait cages. They would literally break apart where the line was connected, and poof! Gone. Thx for sharing. I’m sitting in an Airbnb overlooking beach on Whidbey. Will be searun cutthroat fishing in the AM. 😉
I really like that sound too! I should probably turn it off. I keep my reels well oiled tho, so it hasn't come back to bite me... Yet. Thanks for watching and commenting and good luck with the cutties tomorrow!
I use to build those snares back in the 90's to fish off the pier in Santa Cruz for crab. I might have to go out and give that a go again here in Washington. Great video!
9:53 Blake almost air snares himself a full! 🤣 Hey I always heard that if you spin the crab as you throw it in they do not impact the surface of the water and crack their shell. I wouldnt they it from as high up as you were, good idea with the bucket release.
Nice video Blake... I've always wanted to try using a snare for crabs. Really appreciate breaking down the entire setup. I was super glad to see you meet your goal!
Thanks Tom! Like I said in the video SeaWolf has a good tutorial on how to make em. I think at Westport it's the way to go now. Or if you're shore fishing Puget Sound when crab is open might as well bomb one out!
Totally agreed corberator, this was a very good vid, I learned a few things as well. Can't use snares in Canada but cool to learn more. Noticeable good editing too. Mike
That answered a number of questions for me!! I was originally from Tacoma and the family moved to Ca when I was 11, 74 now so it's been a while.I snare here in Ca whenever I can get to the coast and was wondering about the rules and regs in the PNW. Not every state allows snares? Not a clue as to why? In Ca we can keep both males and females over 5 3/4 inch. Not as much meat in the females though. Rock crab has a limit of 30 and is open all year long. I think the size is 4 inches on the rocky. Dungeness has a season though, it just closed. I also make my own snares but a bit different than yours. The rock crab and seals will destroy the thin wire 1/2 X 1/2 wire so most of us use the heavy gauge 1 X 1/2 wire. If I come back to visit the family and the season is on I will be bringing my crab gear with me. That too is a bit different but whatever works.
I ate at Merino’s on Saturday. I had the Ling & Chips with a bowl of Clam Chowder - Yum! Too bad they temporarily closed the Hearty Galley, they have the best burgers in town IMO and a good breakfast too. Love this town!
Totally agree! I know Torsten who runs Hearty Galley. He uses the highest quality hamburger or sirloin in his burgers. He has super high standards. And like you said about breakfast, they are in there making their own hash browns. I think he has a hard time finding/keeping staff. He also owns surfer girl on the strip if you ever want an ice cream cone.
I don't think the regs is clear on that but I think it'd be fine. I've done it before. Since WDFW considers my two poles crab gear here, should be one crab gear one fishing gear. You can always email them though. They got back to me next day. Great service! I kept the email on my phone just in case.
Black label herring purchased for halibut a “few years ago”. I laughed when I heard you say it because it sounded pretty nasty but then I remembered I actually have some of that or something similar in my freezer next to a bag of pink salmon roe from 2019. SMH....
Ha! Yes sir. Those were also 2019 I think. My boat is so relatively small, that sometimes I prep to go halibuting but have to cancel due to conditions. Happy I got to use them for something tho!
Thanks again for the recommendation! The low wind resistance is also very nice. Look forward to that filming off a boat. Nice price too! I feel like I underpaid for the quality of the unit.
Awesome man, I was going to ask if you bought a new camera. It's a clear improvement from your other footage. Good stuff. Haha you almost caught some sea lions and a bird!! Great information about the crabs, I wish the fisheries would set up a mandatory course like the PCOC ) pleasure craft operations certificate). So many people kill crabs and rockfish without even realizing it. It's awesome that your getting that information out there!
Despite going to Westport countless times over the years, we never bought food at Merino’s before. Went there today and you were right: The ling cod fish and chips was probably among the best we ever had. EDIT: The Hearty Galley is still our go to for burgers there.
I am in FULL agreement! I love the Hearty Galley for a burger. And those fish and chips are the bomb! They're only have that window open a year or two, so you didn't miss out too long!
I've heard that a lot from this EP. I didn't know until I posted it, that it bothered people. I love the sound for some reason. Thanks for letting me know you were annoyed (I guess).
Mr Blake
Been watching for 3 yrs
Appreciate your work...
Can't wait for more content sir
Thank you Michael! I do need to get back in the swing of making videos again. That's for sure

That crab liked that bucket!
👌Sweet vid bro, never seen someone Snare crab😎
Thank you sir! It's a lot of fun!
You’re allowed three ways. Three pots or three poles in oregon
Whoa! That's cool. (This is in Washington; we only get two).

Thanks for the video. i really enjoyed watching it!!
Thanks WCO! I enjoyed your comment so I guess we're even!
Casting out to the piling sticking out of the water behind the bathrooms and the bait shop is my favorite spot I limit out there all the time.
Thanks for the tip W Miller! 👍
Should have stayed for more!
I agree Julie!! What was I thinkin?
Right on!!! Great stuff. Thankful for a new video!
Thanks a ton as always Rich!
Good comment on not tossing them back. But I don't want to bucket them and be accused of keeping small crab.

I must return to Westport soon for some Merino’s.
Heck yeah me too. So good!
Nice to see you make a video.
Thanks Colin! I've made a video, alright!
Brother I saw you I was fishing for crabs and rock fish
Oh cool! Did you talk to me after you were done fishing? If so, I remember and thanks!
9:53 i thought you gonna hit that bird)))
Thanks for noticing that, that's why I kept that particular shot in!
I thought the same. Ouch
Is there a horizon auto leveling setting on the DJI camera?
Hey Willipa Photo! It has stabilizer/tilt lock that will keep it generally level. I just checked tho, and do not believe it has a horizon auto leveling function.
Nice video! What time of the year was this? Its been dead this past month since ive went.
We need another crab snaring video.
I love going here!
Thanks Emilio! You're right. There is nothing better!
Blake do you know anything about the other entrance of the eastern portion of the marina they call Firecracker point? I can't find any info on that and was very curious. Thanks again for the public service you do!
I found out it not open to the public but owned by the port. Happy crabbing.
Glad to see another video! Great stuff.

Ha ha, awesome! Thanks so much Jacob! I hope you snare many a crab!
Nice tips on proper release, too rare
Thanks a ton for saying so Mark! IMO mannnny more crab are released too rough than not. Fatalities, lost limbs, all avoidable!
Keep up the good work Blake. I have been watching your videos for about six years now. I would agree as well Westport is the best port!!!!!

15 seconds in and I am mad because you mention Merino's and now I'm hungry for some rockfish 🤣
Great content, as always!
Super appreciate it... And hey now I'm mad too!!!
Westport is quite short of being called the best port
Because, sport, we’ll see you in court
When you show up down here
In Newport.
Thanks Jacob! But Newport (kind of) rhymes with #2port for a reason! :D J/K
@@WAFishQuest Oh, ZINGGGG!!! Well played, Dubbya Eff Queue…….we’ll played 🤦♂️😁
Merino's has the best clam chowder!!
Good to know! I'm always just getting their various fish and chips! Also sweet name!

I think I am. That's the fisherman's peer right? I'm in the corner facing into the harbor if that makes sense.

Are you going to be crab fishing at Westport on 04/25/2021 too?
I'll probably put a pot in for a long soak but not cast. (Might as well).
@@WAFishQuest How did you do? We got nine today casting off the pier with jaw traps.
