Beautiful ceremony. It makes me cry with joy that we have President Trump who understands the value of this flag. My father landed in Normandy, Utah beach on D-Day June 6th after training 6 months in England with Brits. He was a medic. He told me very little of the war but I finally told him, "when you die I will only be able to read about this in books, and I won't even know if it's true." So he told me about some things. He was a conscientous objector who refused to carry a firearm and became a medic. His little brother Teddy died in Southern France, Sept 1944, and my father was taken prisoner at the battle of the Bulge on 12/24/44. His parents were told he was MIA-presumed dead. His mother so distraught about losing her other son only 3 months after the first, that she died of heart attack in Feb 1945 at only 42 years old (everyone said she died of a broken heart). I specifically asked my dad about D-Day. I guess the majority of soldiers were shot dead on beach and Germans were on hill in cement bunkers with machine guns. He said mostly everyone fell in the water dead. "You didn't dare look back because commanders were in the back yelling, keep going or we'll shoot you ourselves." I asked how he got up hill or decided who to help. He said you just kept pushing forward, no stopping. Eventually a few Americans reached the bunkers and threw in hand grenades. That's about all he told me about D Day, his first day of WWII. Just now I was thinking, maybe that flag was on the boat my father was on. It's weird growing up in a family that lost so much through wars for our freedom. I never really understood a lot about him until after he died at age 90. He did get a Bronze Star in France for going out repeatedly under heavy German fire, dragging men back one at a time, when all others sought safety from the shelling. He got 7 men, and 6 lived. He was also shot, and went back after, then taken POW Xmas eve 1944. I asked how the German soldiers treated him. He said they were all stuck out in the cold without much food but the Germans shared their food equally with the prisoners. All they had to eat was 500 gallon drums of sauerkraught. The Allies freed him in April and he went home to bury his brother. His father was a WWI vet who became too distraught to function from losing both sons and his wife, only realizing in April that one son was still alive. Thanks for listening. The fun thing that historians here don't mention is that it was not the US that liberated the Netherlands. Without the US, the invasion on the beaches would not have happened, at least not in 1944, but the liberators of the Netherlands were Canadian !
Partially they made a turn right into Germany halfway through the country. This is why the lower half was liberated earlier, but the upper half had to wait for the Canadiens to free them. Respect goes to all who participated in our liberation no matter their nationality.

Most Dutch don't know almost 250k (yes 250.000) Polish soldiers acted in the liberation of Europe and the Netherlands. Some southern cities have festivities honoring the Polish soldiers....but they mostly don't remember. A little extra note for historians, as the Morrocan people are deemed very bad in the Netherlands (i mean every one, when there are good people also): During the start of the war, the Morrocans had regiments fighting in the South of the Netherlands. For their aide during battles in Belgium, Netherlands and Italy, the Sultan received the "Compagnon of Liberation Medal". The only non-french ever to receive it...

My great uncle Roland Goss was at Normandy as the operator of one of our landing crafts he told us many times about how on the third trip back to the ship to pick up and deliver more men to the beach. Beautiful ceremony. It makes me cry with joy that we have President Trump who understands the value of this flag. My father landed in Normandy, Utah beach on D-Day June 6th after training 6 months in England with Brits. He was a medic. He told me very little of the war but I finally told him, "when you die I will only be able to read about this in books, and I won't even know if it's true." So he told me about some things. He was a conscientous objector who refused to carry a firearm and became a medic. His little brother Teddy died in Southern France, Sept 1944, and my father was taken prisoner at the battle of the Bulge on 12/24/44. His parents were told he was MIA-presumed dead. His mother so distraught about losing her other son only 3 months after the first, that she died of heart attack in Feb 1945 at only 42 years old (everyone said she died of a broken heart).
I specifically asked my dad about D-Day. I guess the majority of soldiers were shot dead on beach and Germans were on hill in cement bunkers with machine guns. He said mostly everyone fell in the water dead. "You didn't dare look back because commanders were in the back yelling, keep going or we'll shoot you ourselves." I asked how he got up hill or decided who to help. He said you just kept pushing forward, no stopping. Eventually a few Americans reached the bunkers and threw in hand grenades. That's about all he told me about D Day, his first day of WWII.
Just now I was thinking, maybe that flag was on the boat my father was on. It's weird growing up in a family that lost so much through wars for our freedom. I never really understood a lot about him until after he died at age 90. He did get a Bronze Star in France for going out repeatedly under heavy German fire, dragging men back one at a time, when all others sought safety from the shelling. He got 7 men, and 6 lived. He was also shot, and went back after, then taken POW Xmas eve 1944. I asked how the German soldiers treated him. He said they were all stuck out in the cold without much food but the Germans shared their food equally with the prisoners. All they had to eat was 500 gallon drums of sauerkraught. The Allies freed him in April and he went home to bury his brother. His father was a WWI vet who became too distraught to function from losing both sons and his wife, only realizing in April that one son was still alive. Thanks for listening. Thank you President Trump. You are what I have been praying for since about 1980 when I started realizing that our government was too corrupt and something would eventually break. Thank Q

With the EU rising, it is questionable if these Dutch speakers are aware of what freedom really is. Without any referendum asking the Dutch people, the politicians seem to be giving away the freedom that once was fought for.

Democracy is farfetched in the Netherlands. With all these little political groups, you can govern with ten small minorities and leave all of the rest of the voters.

Just an example:
biggest party 35 seats - so-called right wing
next one 20 seats - real right wing
Together they only need 16 more seats to govern.
The second biggest party is left out and 4/5 small parties are added to govern which are all left wing.
Then all small parties have demands, which are granted of course. So instead of having a right-wing (be it center right) government, it is turned to a left wing government.
Thats what the left sees as democracy....well i say it is smartly hidden supression.
But i have hope, all over Europe the right is gaining momentum, which won't stop anytime soon...the future will tell.

The fun thing that historians here don't mention is that it was not the US that liberated the Netherlands.
Without the US, the invasion on the beaches would not have happened, at least not in 1944, but the liberators of the Netherlands were Canadian !
Partially they made a turn right into Germany halfway through the country. This is why the lower half was liberated earlier, but the upper half had to wait for the Canadiens to free them. Respect goes to all who participated in our liberation no matter their nationality.
Well Jila, of course Canadians and Americans were among the liberators and they did most of it accross the Netherlands, but the fact is:
Polish soldiers were the first to sweep the south of the country....
They were stopped at Arnhem where the Canadians and Americans caught up and had the famous battle.
The cemetery in Breda is a silent witness of the losses suffered by the Polish people. Most Dutch don't know almost 250k (yes 250.000) Polish soldiers acted in the liberation of Europe and the Netherlands. Some southern cities have festivities honoring the Polish soldiers....but they mostly don't remember.
A little extra note for historians, as the Morrocan people are deemed very bad in the Netherlands (i mean every one, when there are good people also):
During the start of the war, the Morrocans had regiments fighting in the South of the Netherlands.
For their aide during battles in Belgium, Netherlands and Italy, the Sultan received the "Compagnon of Liberation Medal". The only non-french ever to receive it...

My great uncle Roland Goss was at Normandy as the operator of one of our landing crafts he told us many times about how on the third trip back to the ship to pick up and deliver more men to the beach.
