That last joke goes well with the "a bus load of origami enthusiasts has broken down on the freeway, and the passengers are making little models of all the stopped cars. Traffic is described as stationary"
Checkpoint, come for the video game comedy news and commentary, stay for Graham Stark visibly suffering psychic damage from his wife's top tier dad joke.
I felt like there were some deeper details to be found so I looked into that article and found: "I just needed contact Ellen Guon’s significant other. While tweeting about my latest attempts, a mutual pointed out to me that the reason I’ve been having trouble finding her is that she’s since transitioned and changed her name to Siobhan Beeman. This is such a not-uncommon occurrence in the gaming industry that, honestly, anytime I can’t find someone and there’s no obituary, I assume they’ve simply transitioned." okay I love this!
As someone who hasn't played a Final Fantasy game since 1999, but watched Advent Children a bunch of times and for some reason played a lot of Ehrgeiz (stylized on the cover as God Bless the Ring EZ Ehrgeiz), I greatly appreciate the directions this episode took. I'm gonna go see if my PS1 still works.
Nick really does seem to be an absolute legend. He really showed the power that employee goodwill can give you. They hit the ground running after the move. Really impressive work and I hope a sign of things to come in the corporate world. They essentially fired their bosses.
If Nick hadn't turned everything around for Escapist, there wouldn't be a board to set unrealistic ad revenue targets - firing Nick was the least sensible move possible and they did it anyway. He was the buffer between the talent and upper management's bullshit. This was yet another example of when a company misunderstands that corporations are built from the bottom-up, not the top-down. You knock out the first floor, the whole building collapses.
3:13 "--Okay, hang on, shut up" is beautifully delivered here. Also, for the joke that Kathleen told at the end of the vid: if I wasn't already subscribed, I would be now. 😂
But Sephiroth is also in Smash, so in theory, Cloud and his ex-boyfriend could keep killing each other for all eternity, like a bishounen death ouroboros.
when Yatzhee announced that he was going to be censoring any swears in his vidoes but we could pay to hear him curse about video games I felt that there was something going on at the Escapist.
Cloud's been in way more crossover games than just Smash. Just in the Square world, you've got FF Tactics, all of the Dissidia games, Record Keeper, Brave Exvius... wait, this is just Six Degrees of Sephiroth!
Kathleen, I don't stress about watching Checkpoint. It's between pretty good and very good. I only stress when I don't see it show up in my feeds. Oh. food... now I'm hungry. NOW I'M STRESSED!!! THANKS, KATHLEEN!!!
I wasn't looking at the screen during the coming up, so I heard that the M&Ms were coming to Fortnite, and it was so believeable I didn't even stop to reconsider.
Didn’t even know about the Escapist story!! Follow and listen to a bunch of their content and just thought they were talking a break 😭 Thanks for letting me know! Going to follow Second Wind Now
Good Steam deck naming bit. Dante was already in Nocturne before the rerelease. IIRC it might have been the first official translation to English though.
This wasn't the way I wanted to learn that I'm the same age as Eminem - I mean, I already know I'm old, but when my age is used as an example of 'old and not hip with the young trendy hotness anymore'...it kinda hurts more than the arthritis...
It's weird...2009 feels like it was just a year or two ago...and AT THE SAME TIME feels like it was an eon ago. It's seeing the old crone AND the young lady at the same time that's breaking my brain... Ran into an old coworker at the grocery store - I trained them right outta high school back in '08. I remember that stuff vividly as if it happened only yesterday...meanwhile, they got a college degree, worked abroad, fell in love, married and have a kid. And I still remember their innocent face while I showed them how to clear a printer jam. Time is a pisser.
While I'm slightly disappointed for the Escapist story not to be part of Checkpoint proper, I do appreciate the post-episode rundown of why it wasn't getting the time. And honestly, totally fine - there was so much other to cover this (last three) week(s).
I was honestly expecting the steam deck processor joke to go to kingdom hearts after cloud was mentioned and then G would then going into a conspiracy style tangent about how Disney is trying to control all media and ruin them
Look, Advent Children is less of a "movie", and more of a "sequence of scenes where totally sweet stuff happens, set to the single best version of the FF7 soundtrack" (Your mileage on how totally sweet the stuff is _may_ vary based on how you think the CG has aged.)
I remember it being super rad in 2005, when a friend of my sister's showed up with a DVD copy of it! I assumed I didn't know what was going on because I hadn't played any FF games, but it's good to know it was nonsense to everybody involved. 🤣
I love that joke and Kathleen's glee at delivering the groan-worthy punchline. On the Escapist and Second Wind, I heard when they fired Nick, Yahtzee quit in solidarity. And with Nick gone the rest of the video editing team were like "Marines! We Are Leaving!" and just up and followed Nick out of the company.
18 years later and I still am baffled at the internet collectively deciding Advent Children sucked and didn't make any sense lmao. Still overall excellent video, love y'all
Wasn't the last time we heard about Mass Effect and merch it was that creepy statue thing? Dead femshep in space? Or did my addled brain just make that up.
Um... Valve doesn't make a 3rd of things. 2nd steam deck it is until portal 3. Also, Cloud made it into Kingdom Hearts, so we can go all sorts of directions there with Disney properties, which were ultimately defeated by their writers.
Still hoping for all the other LRR stuff that was on the Escapist. I didn't realize how much I missed the Daily Drop till I saw it on the Overnight Watch-a-long. Not to mention the weekly sketches there
Daily Drop was great. It was like a bite-sized iteration of Slow Mo Guys! Also, it sucks that some of the best CommodoreHustle's like Pony Time and Bros Clubbing Bros are still stuck there.
Wait, so that quote came from origin in the late 80s/early 90s. Chris Roberts was at origin in the late 80s/early 90s. Star citizen is starting to make more sense.
My conclusion from the few times I've tried watching Advent Children is that it literally made me fall asleep. Every. Time. I have no idea how it ends or, for that matter, middles.
The end is solidly okay as an action setpiece. Part of me sort of hopes the Remake trilogy somehow makes that portion playable, in some way. But yeah no, it middles, and it middles some more, overall.
Kaz, I think that is his name, one of the bad guys who wants to look like Sephiroth - he gets some Jenova Cell fragments that Neo -Shinra found. Turns out Geostigma was these Jenova Cells infecting the life stream. Normal people can fight it off, but children can't...and Cloud as well. Whatever the bad guy's name is, he smashes the container and the cells enter him and turn him into Sephiroth, just like Jenova did to itself in the original game (for those that don't remember, the times you see Sephiroth then fight a Jenova - you actually were just seeing Jenova. Memetic alien monster and all that.) So Cloud and not-Sephiroth fight back and forth for awhile, then Cloud pulls out his new blade and does the Omnislash V7 I think it is called and one shots him. Limit Breaks OP. Sorry I don't remember the whole of it...been a long while since I watched it.
Valve would have to make a third thing before future naming conventions become a problem so I'm pretty sure they're safe.
SteamOS 3

^^^ THIS ^^^
Grahams reaction to Kathleens joke is a man reconsidering every decision that led him to this point.
I liked it.
Every. Single. Decision. Why? I am committed now.
maybe he was thinking they were ALL good decisions. I enjoyed the joke immensely.
The joke was turrible. I loved it so much.
I felt like there were some deeper details to be found so I looked into that article and found:

I love this too! Lovely to see ^_^
omg transgenders! you love to see it

for "character that has killed Gods" I definitely thought we were going Kirby.
Me too. 😂
3:13 "--Okay, hang on, shut up" is beautifully delivered here.
Also, for the joke that Kathleen told at the end of the vid: if I wasn't already subscribed, I would be now. 😂
"Stop putting words in my mouth" Shigeru Miyamoto
-Wayne Gretzky
But Sephiroth is also in Smash, so in theory, Cloud and his ex-boyfriend could keep killing each other for all eternity, like a bishounen death ouroboros.
Take my like for the phrase “bishounen death ouroboros” it made my day
I'm glad I'm not the only one who was like "Okay but is Second Wind a good name in the long term?"
when Yatzhee announced that he was going to be censoring any swears in his vidoes but we could pay to hear him curse about video games I felt that there was something going on at the Escapist.
That was more RUclips than his corporate bosses.
well, he's swearing now, so apparantly it stopped mattering
That look of physical pain on Graham's face at the end was priceless
Graham's pain came not from the power of the joke, but from the realization that K outdadjoked him so powerfuly
The silence after "lengthy jams" was PROFOUND.
Kathleen, regarding the accident with the Jazz Musicians, I heard their car left lengthy Ska marks all over the road.
They'd better get a cleanup crew out there to pick it up, pick it up, pick it up.
Hopefully the local news trumpets it out there so no one gets stuck in the cleanup.
When writing, it's important to know who's reading the lines. Kathleen's madcap is deeply different than Beej's madcap.
One of them uses the word kroner.
This week, Beej wrote the “games suck forever” story, the others were written by their readers.
@@LRRVG Honestly it has beejs voice in the writing style if that makes sense. Graham still did great reading it😁
Oh man that joke at the end. I’m saving that for my dad joke compilation.
Doubt Kathleen herself will see this, but if you do, know that we love you, and your jokes.
Thank you for giving me a chortle today.
It was cooler when Miyamoto was the one we all thought said it, but "Suck is forever" is pretty good too.
He did say it, but he didn't express that sentiment first.
Now Graham gets to show loyalty to himself now as the corporate overlord.
Liked for the Steam Deck processor chain joke, double liked for the pained expression on G's face after Kathleen's joke at the end. Perfection.
It just goes to show, even in writing, you have a distinct voice that makes separating out everyone's madcap great!
Cloud's been in way more crossover games than just Smash. Just in the Square world, you've got FF Tactics, all of the Dissidia games, Record Keeper, Brave Exvius... wait, this is just Six Degrees of Sephiroth!
Plus Kingdom Hearts, opening up the Disney roster!
The Escapist-Second Wind thing is a great showing of worker solidarity
The joke at the end of the post-show got a good hearty chuckle out of me.
Kathleen, I don't stress about watching Checkpoint. It's between pretty good and very good. I only stress when I don't see it show up in my feeds. Oh. food... now I'm hungry. NOW I'M STRESSED!!! THANKS, KATHLEEN!!!
It's good to hear Yahtzee is doing well, Zero Punctuation was how I was introduced to LRR

I hit the Like button ALMOST ENTIRELY for that last Joke, Kathleen.
I burst out laughing for AT LEAST 3 Whole seconds
Thank you for Subscribing to Kathleen Facts - did you know that she can make jokes that are banned by the Geneva Convention they are that good
That Mass Effect collar is perfect for when you want to play with your puppy.
The way Graham limps off pundefeated.
I know at least one person at BioWare who is probably very excited about the dog collar, and I'm very happy for her. :D
Glad for a new episode of CheckPoint, also glad that my Moonbase Mk. VI merch finally arrived too
Why'd you have to go and crumble my bones to dust by mentioning Eminem's age?
This wasn't the way I wanted to learn that I'm the same age as Eminem - I mean, I already know I'm old, but when my age is used as an example of 'old and not hip with the young trendy hotness anymore'...it kinda hurts more than the arthritis...
That and 2009 being almost fifteen years ago. Me mentally going "I'm not sure that arithmetic checks oooooh yes it does..."
Time is a pisser.
Bioware has actually been making dog collars for years, my ex had one on her dog. But she's also the kinda person that would wear it herself...
Also, plenty of dogs have bigger necks than humans do. Ever seen a Rottweiler or Mastiff? But ya, collar's can be for anyone!
Holy hell, I haven't thought about Ehrgeiz in actual decades. I used to love that game.
ah good, Graham is Aware of puppygirls aka "kinds of dogs"
My favourite version of the misquote will always be @FUNKe : 'delay your game, or I'll delay your breathing'
who?
While I'm slightly disappointed for the Escapist story not to be part of Checkpoint proper, I do appreciate the post-episode rundown of why it wasn't getting the time. And honestly, totally fine - there was so much other to cover this (last three) week(s).
that joke at the end was delightful
man i really thought g was gonna say "you know what doesnt suck? this hat, which was sent to us by ..."
I hope some day we get some kind of LRR/Yahtzee crossover now that both are free of the escapist. Graham speaks of Nick and him with such fondness.
Already kind of happening ❤😂🎉
3:17 you said "lineal" my brain interpreted the word "liminal" and made the rest of what you were talking about all the funnier 🤙🏿🍻
15:59 hahahaha
Hold the heck at the door. Eminem is 51?! Oh...
Graham pronouncing Ehrgeiz was both hilarious and hurt my soul.
"There might be better sources of news, but they don't suck forever." - LRR, presumably.
The Colab with Yahtzee and Sero Punctiation is how I found yall almost 15 years ago
15:50 Kathleen, that was a banger of a joke. Keep at it!
I'm registering a new account to upvote again for the valve CPU naming bit. Amazing.
"The show doesn't have to be good as long as we're making something" You guys have never made a bad thing in your lives.
That outro literally couldn't have been better.
Graham with the deep cuts of Ehrgeiz and the PS1 Demo CD.
We're through the looking glass here people ❤😂🎉
Graham should take over an episode of Fully Ramblomatic for old time's sake
Escapist labor movement. The fruits of labor belong in the hands of the laborers.
That's Kathleen for ya 😆
That joke feels like a qwerpline bit
That was a fantastic joke and don't let anyone tell you differently.
I was honestly expecting the steam deck processor joke to go to kingdom hearts after cloud was mentioned and then G would then going into a conspiracy style tangent about how Disney is trying to control all media and ruin them

I love that joke and Kathleen's glee at delivering the groan-worthy punchline.

18 years later and I still am baffled at the internet collectively deciding Advent Children sucked and didn't make any sense lmao. Still overall excellent video, love y'all
It's not particularly convoluted. I mean, compared to FF VIII it's practically straightforward.
I remember that Playstation Underground disc.
Project Elektra: hang around getting mad at Epic until Project Orestes turns up to actually do something.
Steam Deck OLED 5: Featuring Dante from the Devil May Cry series!
Ehrgeiz mentioned. God Bless The Ring, everyone!
You can quote me on this "Yes!"
im down for lengthy jams

Have been subscribed for years.

No, the next in line is Sora from Kingdom Hearts ❣️!
Lol, also would work within Smash Bros lore. XD
Maybe by the time we're on the Parappa the Rapper version of the steam deck it'll be for sale in australia.
Didn't think we'd get a Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon segment, but for gaming hardware, but what do you know?
I foresee a rush of e621 images of Liara and Tali in dog collars
Given the popularity of steppy ladies these days I think you'll see more of them holding the leash and someone else in the collar.
Love this show

Wouldn't a simpler Cloud killer just be Sun? You could then have Nova, then Time, then some procrastinator. 😉

Shout out to Yahtzee-- it was through his old videos that I discovered Unskippable, which of course lead me to everything else LRR-based.
Skibity toilet?
Who cares about Advent Children - we want a Spirits Within crossover!
Wait, so that quote came from origin in the late 80s/early 90s. Chris Roberts was at origin in the late 80s/early 90s. Star citizen is starting to make more sense.
Kathleen, never change.
Fun fact: the "ei" in Schreiber and Ehrgeiz are actually pronounced the same.
Lenghty jams! Ha!
ERGEIZ
GOD BLESS THE RING
Algorithmic Punch!
I laughed so hard at the final joke.
Gold star. Graham your lady is amazing.
Wouldn't it make sense for Valve to put the processor of their last version of Steam Deck *in* the cloud though?
(No, it probably wouldn't.)
"Bioware, make a game!" At this point, *Valve* develops and releases games at a higher frequency than Bioware does. 🙄
I for one am glad there's no pressure to make things that are good and I will be leaving a mediocre-effort comment, as usual
My conclusion from the few times I've tried watching Advent Children is that it literally made me fall asleep.
