I'm an African American who happened upon this video. Unfortunately, I don't know any language but English. Would someone please explain this video in English. Are the men dancing and singing in this video because of a special occasion? I looked up "Matatiele" on Wikipedia and found out it is in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. What ethnic group is this? Thanks in advance for this information. One love.
Azizi Powell thank for tuning in to be blunt of whats happening .... these are Hlubi young men the are celebrating their return from Hlubi initiation school or the Mountain school as known by westerners ... the singing and Dancing is part of way of reciting the entertainment part of initiation as it is a way of engaging the community and saying thank you to their mothers . it is a very complex and long journey to be explained in details as it evolves a lot of steps and processes the each person in a community plays... the women do the cooking in such events and the men take care of the rite of passage/Initiation as it is .... this is the final part and celebrating it with songs, poets, and dance ... this is an old custom among the Hlubi People .... Matatiele is a medium town in the upper parts of eastern cape its situated along the Drankensburg Mountains is this area you find the Basotho , Amahlubi , AmaBhaca and the Abathembu nations .... the Amahlubi and Basotho share a most similar rite of passage / initiation process hence you will see similarities ..... this is to answer your question on the other post you asked in .
Luzuko Nodada, Greetings! It's amazing that it only took 20 minutes before you answered my question. Thank you. I really appreciate it. I wrote the same request for information on another similar video, ruclips.net/video/cNAGd5OmgMk/видео.html Amahlubi from Matatiele Also, if I'm not mistaken, ) the video entitled "Tsa ntate Ndaba Matatiele eNkalweni 2013" is also similar. I'm also interested in knowing if the video entitled eMpofin kwaGxobanyawo (Matatiele) shows young men singing for the same purpose as those other videos? I have a cultural blog that focuses on Black cultures throughout the world. I just published three posts on South African stick dancing. The videos that I showcased led me to these videos. I'd like to showcase all of these videos on my pancocojams blog with your comment if that is okay.
Yes it is a special occasion This is a ceremony to represent the transition of males from boys to manhood. This is after initiation which varies from place to place (1 month to 3 months). At the initiation process the boys go to the mountain where they spend that time in isolation from everyone and are taught to be men.
Thanks for your reply, Ayathandwa Vikwa. As an African American. I appreciate learning about traditional African cultures. Thanks also to all those who publish these RUclips videos and share information in English about these videos for those of us who are unfortunate to only speak and read that language. One love!
