Thanks for the video. I set it up as instructed but only see, "All Tags" in the checklist view in right-hand column instead of sorted by tag as you show in your video. Any advice?
I found when you have different tag task in one note, when you use dataview to list one tagged task in another note, all tasks from the first note will show up. How to only show the task that I wanted?
Hi Nicole, when I try to use dataview for these, all of the tasks are showing up that are on that page, even though I have the Checklist settings set to Group by tag. Maybe there was an update in one of the plugins recently?

How can I create a view showing my completed tasks if I want to review my week?
I don't want to toggle the completed task on, because that will mess up the plugin showing all tasks.

There is a GTD community plugin available similar to the checklist plugin. Does more or rather less than Nicole showed but gives the four predefined GTD categories as a filter.
There's a reason for the similarity-- the GTD plugin is actually a fork of the Checklist plugin. I prefer the less opinionated and more flexible version, but for those who are rigid followers of GTD, I can see how it would be useful!
@@nicolevdh Sort of a funny answer when the video began with your opinionated perspective of GTD. And no, I'm not a rigid follower of GTD. But certainly in all these years, the GTD has been a reference for all the other applications.

Hi, great content. I'm not sure but I don't think you mentioned the case where a task is in several context. For example you could have an action which would be "buy Y object" placed in "when I'm outside" todo and in "when I have time" todo and if you tick it it would be done in both place. Is it possible?

Great! I mostly use the tag for tasks, not meetings, but that's certainly a valid way to use it. :)

But what I missed is the /waiting-for since I didn’t want to use the kanban plugin additionally. I will now try it your way out.
Feels like grouped by tags is better than grouped by page since it gives me more options.
I have created the dataview query as shown, it is pulling in all tasks not just the ones I have tagged for a single person. I can’t seem to fix it. Can you help?

Gotta try this one out. I'd love to see your workflow with Obsidian when making videos. You get to the point and every part has a purpose, that has to require a lot of work. :)
Haha! The truth is far less organized. I had bulleted talking points for this video (like most videos), went through it in one take without prepping beforehand, then cut out (most of) the parts where I rambled or made mistakes. :) The editing takes me significantly more time than filming it! I'm very happy to hear that you liked this one! Appreciate the encouragement for sure.

Thanks! I found this very useful, since now I can get rid of one application and have it in Obsidian instead. If only there would be way to have checklist under the calendar on the right hand side, but one cannot have everything.
Hey Roger! Good news-- you can! All of the notes and plugins in Obsidian can be moved around. You can click on the plugin icon at the top and move it to a pane below the one with Calendar, if you'd like. :)

Happy you like it! I love keyboard shortcuts, but I'm always careful when demonstrating something because keyboard shortcuts can be hard to follow!
Do you have a video on the obsidian tasks plugin as well?
I really like the idea of this plugin, however I have one complaint and I would like to know if someone knows a workaround:
When marking an entry in the checklist as done I would like it to be put in to my todays daily note in some shape (so I can see all the tasks I got done today). Optimally in the note of the original there would then also be a reference to this entry to allow me to visualize both when the task was created and when it was done.
Does someone know how to accomplish this? I want to still have the ease of use of this plugin with the added capability.

Hi, I can't seem to get it to work on mobile.

my tags show up in purple but don't populate within the task list
How would we be able to use dataview to reference the block instead of the page. Say I have my agenda written down in a daily note, with the block tagged with "#todo/agenda/person" and I want it to surface in that persons document, without bringing in any other "#todo/tasks" that may exist on the same page?

great video! testing it out... pros: can incorporate into daily note w/dataview like you mentioned and checking an item auto removes it from todo list! ... cons: the spacing between items takes up a lot of space in my sidebar and it's not possible to show proper indentation (for subtasks). Overall I'll keep it, thanks Nicole!

Hi again! I don't, actually. Any tasks that are date- or time-specific, I put on reclaim.ai . I prefer to keep those tasks scheduled on my Google Calendar instead of in Obsidian!
@@nicolevdh I understand. The thing is I have so many small tasks, as I like to break down them alot and I think is going to be difficult to use calendar for that. I had some trouble with the checklists plug-in, since it seemed a little buggy (maybe it's my theme, I'm using Yin and Yang). For example I couldn't always check off the items and I didn't like that it wasn't easy to navigate from the task to the note that contains it.
Originally, I thought it was only possible to have plugins in the side-panel, but you can also add notes to it. Which is now what I've done.
Without the checklist suggestion I wouldn't have thought to even try doing so!

Hmmm, that's weird... I haven't experienced any issues, and I can navigate to the note containing the task by clicking on the task (not on the checkbox, but anywhere else on the task). It wasn't the same for you?

@@nicolevdh No, I wasn't able to navigate to the note by clicking on it, but it's ok. Adding inline key::value pairs has been working well for me!
Still, the video helped me to feel a bit more confident about having tasks scattered in with my notes.

Hmmm... I'm not sure, but not all plugins are available for mobile. Checklist might be one of them! I had not tried to use it on my mobile devices, sorry!
hi, when using the same query i had all the tasks without the note name, unless i user group by section i can have grouping, can you show us what you did to make it work the way you did?

The Dataview plugin has changed since I made this video, but you could recreate it by using GROUP BY file.name or something similar.

thanks VERY much. excellent video. Question on the checklist plugin. I've tried using it before, but I 'roll over' my todos in my daily notes - so the same task may appear on multiple daily notes - which means it also shows up in the checklist view multiple times. Is there a way to avoid that? Also, I would imagine the checklist view will eventually get very long - is there a way to better filter that? (I am imagining using a set of pages with dataviews in them instead?) - in my current task manager (MyLifeOrganized) I have over 370 todos!

On rolling over todos-- if you're just using the Checklist plugin, you won't need to roll over your tasks because they'll always be in the Checklist pane, even if they're overdue. If you still want them shown on your daily note, you could probably use a Dataview query that will show overdue tasks. Either way, you wouldn't need to duplicate them.
Re: filtering the checklist-- yes, you can use tags for that! I only showed a handful of tasks as a demo, but you could have, for example, #todo/next-action/computer, #todo/next-action/project-x, etc. Each one will show up as a separate, collapsible section in Checklists. If you need more complex filtering, I would consider using Dataview to filter the tasks rather than Checklists. Hope that helps! :)
@@nicolevdh got it - thanks. Now if I could only find the time to play around with this! There is so much you can do with Obisdian, and so many ways to do them! The big thing I would lose from MLO is it's ability to automatically generate a prioritized list of todos based on urgency/priority/context - which honestly I don't use as much anyway. But I do wonder if it could be done in obsidian - but not with raw tasks. Seems like you could do it with a page (or block) per task - with frontmatter flags for urgency/priority/context and some dataview scripting to calculate a priority rank/sort. And a way to set the current context. Lots of food for thought :)
and the quick collection into the inbox. I forward emails to my todo inbox, and from my android notification shade all the time. But I'm pretty sure there is a way to do that for Obsidian as well.
A little off topic maybe, but is there a way to have the daily note automatically created and populated without having to close obsidian, and bring it back up? Logseq does it, so am curious if Obsidian can as well. Thank you!

Hey, it looks like Dataview was updated since I did this video! It used to be just the default. Now tasks are just displayed without where they've come from.
@@nicolevdh Thanks for your answer. That explains a lot. Also, I dont get the same results in a markdown file after creating a dataview query like you did for #todo/agenda/jonathan. If I create in a file multiple tasks with the #todo above them and without it, I get as results in the dataview query all tasks of that file, with and without the #todo. The same for the different #todo I created, e.g., #todo/next-action, #todo/waiting-for. Even though I write from #todo/next-action in the query I get also the tasks from #todo/waiting-for. Just in the check-list plugin, the tasks are displayed correctly. I tried several things with dataview and dataviewjs but none worked. I think in the code of the plugin can be the answer, but I dont understand it quite well. Maybe you have a better idea.
I can't reproduce that error, so if you are running into issues, I would suggest you reach out to the developer of the Dataview plugin with more information about what you're seeing.

Nope, I believe the Dataview plugin has changed since I made this video! I think you'd need to add it into the query itself and perhaps use GROUP BY file.name to accomplish the same thing now.

Hi Marcelo! In the options for Checklist, you can disable the option that removes tasks when they are completed, so they'll still be viewable in the panel.
For full searching, you can do this through either the built-in search feature of Obsidian (tag: #done) or Dataview has a `completed` property that you can use for tasks as well. :) Welcome to the Obsidian community!

Hi Nicole. Thanks for all your Obsidian videos. But I'm still wondering, what is your complete workflow/setup? Such as, how do you structure your notes? Do you use folder (left sidebar), or tags, or [[link]]. I have watched your videos but I'm still confused hehe. Hopefully you can cover this in the future.

Hey Azka! Thank you for that. I really should do a video on this! Let me answer you briefly, though. I mainly use links to create my own outlines of topics. I only use folders to distinguish between notes that might be named the same thing (such as highlights from a book I read vs my summary of the same book). I use tags to mark some notes as #TVZ (kind of like #inbox, for things that are not yet processed), or when I think I'll want to find them someday (like #nvdh/feedback for questions like this one on my videos). Hope that helps! But I'll put it on the list to make a video about this sometime too! :)

Hi Nicole, one minor for the video 10:25 (ruclips.net/video/ODhHTngIMJE/видео.html). I think the dataview query will show not only the tasks having specific tags before but all the tasks on pages which have the specific tag. I know it is not a big difference but might be important in certain case. Thanks for your videos.
do you know how I can get the same result as in the video?
I installed this plugin and it doesn't work at all.
I have templater and kanban, this is a clean install on a new computer and it still doesn't work.
I type todo, #todo and nothing works, tags don't even show up???
It definitely works, but you might not be getting the syntax right. You should type the tag first in its own line, and then the task (using a checkbox) underneath it, in its own line. If you pause the video and copy what I typed, you should be fine. :)

I think there may be something wrong with mine cause check list takes a long time. It's spinning and spinning all the time, my vault is not that big. After 15 mins it finally showed up, other than that it's pretty cool to have that sidebar there to find tags. Would be nice if it could find other things other than tags like 'exam:: This question was correct #right', for that I'm using dataviewjs. Great GTD, sounds similar to journals (e.g., someday, master list etc...). Once I get kanban and dataviewjs working in harmony gonna make a digital journal.
Hmmm, how long does it take before a task you create with that tag shows up in the Checklist pane? I have over 6000 notes now and when I create a new task, it takes a second or less.
Newbie missed something regarding dataview command around 10:40. It returns all the #todo rather than the specified #todo/next-action. I put the dataview command in an note called Next Action under Tasks folder. What did I miss

It does not! Dataview only works with checklists and pages at the moment.
Aloha Nicole! I gave this vid a "like" because it's a good vid, but I'll say that you're dead wrong about some aspects of GTD being inefficient. Sure, David Allen isn't a tech guy, but that doesn't matter because what's true about GTD doesn't have to do with technology. (Hey, BTW, that 43-folder system is not part of GTD!!) I've been doing GTD for four years as David lays it out in his book and it is amazing.
The bottom line is that in order for anyone to accomplish anything that's important to them, whether that was 500 years ago, or 500 years from now, they MUST do the same five things in some form. Say you're committed to writing a book, hiring someone for your business, or building a deck onto your house, you must 1) Capture or identify the idea somehow, 2) Clarify it (figure out what the very next concrete action is that you must take), 3) Organize it (park it somewhere outside of your brain such as on a physical or electronic list), 4) Review your external brain regularly, and 5) Actually DO the next action. David Allen is brilliant in that the 5-step GTD process is utterly timeless. BTW, I LOVE Obsidian and I LOVE your channel! Aloha!!
Confused by the mixed positive and negative tones in your comment. However, did you read his original book? The 43 folders is explicitly in there, and it is the tickler system. His second book (which tried to digitize things) is somewhat less antiquated, but was still unfortunately hopelessly out of date for me.
As I mentioned, there are some things that can be salvaged from GTD, but honestly, the 5-step procedure you outlined was not his creation. He wasn't the first to say any of those things-- just the first to slap a name on it. Those steps are pretty much the foundation of every productivity or work methodology. Definitely timeless, but not unique to GTD.
If it works for you, I'm glad for it! I tend to want to mix and match things from methodologies rather than following any particular one.

Yes, I've read the 2015 book several times and I've also done direct coaching with Meg and Frank. David suggests a lot of things, including the outdated tickler system, but all those suggestions aren't part of the core methodology. The beauty of GTD as David sets it out as just as you say--he explicitly says to use what you can and trash the rest. And you're absolutely right that he didn't invent it--he is very clear, and he claims time and time again that he did not invent it. (In fact, I "directly received" in meditation this methodology a year prior to even hearing about David Allen. I used a lot of it in my grad work, in your part of the world, BTW, at KUL.) The main thing David did is write a book about how it's humanly impossible to do anything without engaging in five steps, and explicitly identified the idea that if we become aware of that fact, we can leverage that and have a greater degree of control.
I think you know that we're all waiting for someone to come up with a methodology or a suite that allows seamless implementation of some kind of updated version of David's system. As you say it won't be software that implements the system exactly, because certain aspects of the system are outdated, but it would be something that brings everything up to our current time period of the 2020s. Readwise, Obsidian, and a few other things are part of that suite, and probably augmented with some original software. ToDoist, OmniFocus, and several other apps come close, but nevertheless have some friction. Aloha!

I'm trying to figure how to turn multiple lines of texts into multiple checklists. For example, in Apple's native Notes app, you can press Shift+Command+L to insert a checklist, and you can also highlight multiple rows of texts and turn them all into checklists at once. For the moment I've got probably, 400 recipes that I need to turn into checklists manually by pasting "-[] " into the beginning of every recipe, and I think I'm going to be spending a few hours doing that lol. Its so inefficient oh well.
And on another note, which is completely unrelated to the video. But imagine in a post-apocalyptic if one day all the world's data were destroyed. That would be pretty scary. Like some natural disaster destroyed all the databases.
Hopefully you've gotten this solved by now, but in 1.5.11 you can a)highlight multiple lines; b)Cmd/Ctrl-P to open the command palette; c)choose "Toggle checkbox status". For me, this changes each of my lines to a separate task. Also, for my version of Obsidian the default hotkey was Cmd/Ctrl-L.
WTH is GTD?
I think other app might do GTD better. I mean, Obsidian is great but not for all things.
My point was that I'm not a fan of the GTD method in general, but I do agree that Obsidian isn't great for all things! In fact, I don't think it's a great task manager at all. I think it CAN be used as a task manager, but I believe that's not one of its strengths.

I was using some .css I've found that fixated some "todo.md" note on the side panel, but this works better, because it collates from different notes. Thx
I think so too! You can always use workspaces to put a note on the side panel, but it's nice not to need to switch notes to add an item, and it's also nice to have multiple lists. Glad you found it useful too!
