    When I was a kid, we went to J. N. Ding Darling wildlife refuge on Sanibel Island. I saw a bunch of photographers with 500 and 600mm lenses lined up for the Roseate Spoonbills there. Bored from the apparent lack of action from the birds, I ran up and clapped my hands so they all flew away, much to the dismay of all the photographers there. Now I'm 38 years old, and I'm that guy with the long lens getting annoyed by loud children. It was probably mean't to be, lol.

    When I was about five or six, we went to a nature reserve and saw someone taking photos and my father very carefully explained why we should go past quietly and without getting in the way. We grew into the kind of kids who would get annoyed with adults who behaved badly around photographers. My little sister would actually say to them, "You should be ashamed!"

    Rule 1: Don't go to the NWR on weekends or holidays.
    Rule 2: Do go on cold, windy days & during low tides.
    Then there was the lady who pulled up behind me while I was trying to shoot a Kingfisher & she jumped out of her car with her cell phone.... I drove off & there she was just looking around at nothing ...
    Then there were the folks who chased off the feeding Osprey while I was fetching my camera, after I asked them to be quiet & careful ... I came back ... "Yeh, he just flew off! We tried to get a closer look, we couldn't tell but it looked like he was eating something!?" Not 10 minutes later ... the same folks, chasing off more birds that I had waited to mellow out.
    Did you know that a well-built all-glass & steel vintage medium format 500mm lens also serves as a $350 club or a bat?

    I got so upset the other day trying to do some wildlife photography. There was a large flock of ducks hanging out near a pond, and to try to get a neat shot I actually got down and started army-crawling towards them to try and avoid spooking them. I finally got close enough and had just started to focus the image when 3 girls just waltzed right through the flock, scaring all of them away. Yes, of course, pay no attention to the girl lying on the ground with a camera.

      +mason methot Yes, I have tried photographing butterflies and dragonflies close up and the click noise on my Canon DSLRs makes them fly away. I'd move to a mirrorless in some situations like that if the auto focus was better on them.

    • @masonmethot3186
      @masonmethot3186 8 лет назад

      DynamixWarePro Auto focusing on those digital's cameras isn't all that bad, but in some cases it is. You could always use the manual focus function (which isn't all that easy to use but it does the job).

      +DynamixWarePro I have just the same problem as you have, with my canon 7D mark ii, any suggestions? I am mostly a nature photographer therefore have the same problem with macro photography....

    • @DynamixWarePro
      @DynamixWarePro 8 лет назад +1

      Daniela Argandoña I haven't yet figured it out totally, but I have found that one good way of getting better shots of your subject, especially if its an animal or inscet, is to if possible, learn about that species behaviour or watch it for a few minutes and see what it does before trying to take photos of them, unless its a species your not going to see often enough to do that.
      When photographing certain insects like butterflies or dragonflies, its how you approach them that counts. Noise and shadows can disturb them. If its a sunny day, try and keep your shadow away from them as that can scare them off if it goes near them. Also if they are feeding, they are less likely to flee since they are distracted.
      When I have photographed butterflies in the past, I have often found both patience and watching the butterfly for a few minutes can help as I once watched a butterfly and noticed that every so often, it would fly back to this one flower in the area, so I sat my camera and tripod near the flower and waited for it to land and when it did, I was able to take a few good shots before it flew away.
      I do know some people who use 7Ds or 70Ds and use either the Sigma 150 mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM APO Macro or Sigma 180mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Macro Lens as the longer focal lengths help as you're not as close to the subject then.

      I can appreciate your comment. I was back in the bayou-side trail one time in Louisiana and a guy came up to me and kept asking about my gear (he was clearly not a photographer). He asked in an uncomfortable way---made me nervous. When he asked how much it was worth (the lens), I just said that they vary---but that this model has a neat feature where, if it's stolen, I can activate a "Lo-Jack" type mechanism and the crook can be tracked immediately via GPS. He walked away.....

    Exactly the same thing with being a news cameraman. "Hey is that camera heavy?" "Do you know the weatherman at your station?" "What newspaper are you from" "Do you have sound? My brother's camera has sound..." "Can I be on TV?" "How do I get into movies?" "What movie are you shooting?" "What format do you shoot in?". "Hey that's cool" then they stand right in front of your camera so you have to tap them on the shoulder and they turn around and say "Oh, I didn't know you were shooting."

    Great fun. Thanks .I always seem to get old ladies who think I am a lurking pervert. When I told one I was photographing birds she looked round sceptically and said in a loud voice "what birds?" 👵🦆
    And a beautiful young woman asked if I was a professional photographer.I didnt mind her so much.But I only lie to to those who look like muggers and ask how much my kit cost. Not sure they believe me when I say £10 on ebay.I need something that makes it look like a bottle in a supermarket carrier bag and also fools wildlife! But that would increase the old ladies.👵👵

    For me the dogs have usually been the most annoying... and evangelical Christians that start talking to me about photography as a conversation starter to talk about religion... I'm trying to take pictures of the birds, I don't have the time for an hour of being polite and not cutting them off... but I still let them finish. Maybe I should be less polite and just interrupt them, it would save both of us time.

  • @marcbernard7702

    I don't really find any of these annoying. The only one I can find disappointing is owners letting their dogs run wild even when they see me trying to get a shot.
    I have had some people offering me to move so I could get a shot and I always reply " Only if you're about to leave because you have as much right as me to be here".
    Chelsea was excellent at playing the part, it was pretty funny to watch.

    I think the WORST incident I ever had to deal with was a couple guys walked out of the trees into my frame while I was scanning the far side of a river and then one of them started acting like I was trying to take their pictures, yelling foul crap at me, making threats, etc. The guy was a total psycho. Always good to be prepared to defend yourself when you're out in the middle of nowhere alone, and in some places it seems especially so if you have a camera. People in some areas just freak out when they see one... don't know if it's because they are afraid you've caught them doing something or what. But ya, more commonly it's something like an idiot bringing their dog out and letting it off the leash to run and chase off everything in the area, which these idiots also did.

    I feel your pain.
    I had a guy come up to me about 12 months ago whilst I was doing some video shooting of the Sydney Oprah House, Sydney Harbour Bridge, Lunar Park and various Harbour vista's.
    I was using a Canon XF300 on a Manfrotto Pro Tripod with a few extra bells and whistles thrown in so to anyone who knew anything about Video I at least had the right gear to do what I was attempting to do with a reasonable collection of gear.
    This guy comes up to me and berates me for not having the Canon XF 305 as opposed to my XF 300, you see the 305 has a "far far better picture" and is "much better suited for the subjects I was attempting to video"
    These two cameras are identical in their technology for image capture the 305 simply has two more output connections for the exact same image captured and I simply do not need these extra's ($500)
    He then went on to tell me that at the end of the day I should just buy,like he had just done, the latest iPhone because if could see the stuff he had shot with that I would have "saved yourself $5,000" and simply"bought an iPhone" like he did, because " that's all you need" Oh and my tripod was no good either, no worries if I had an iPhone I would "not need a Tripod would I?
    I thanked him for his expert advice and told him that he may well be correct because the last I heard FOX Australia was doing all their live News and Sporting broadcasts with iPhones, his face lit up, (maybe Apple had already told him that)
    We shook hands and he went on his way yet another satisfied iPhone / Apple customer, I thanked God I had no shares in Canon, after all how would it be possible for them to survive such a one on one meet and greet their customers on the street by Apple users so determined to alert them of the error's of their ways?
    If you are still reading, how about these gems from my Videoing exploits:
    1."Does that do sound too" (Whilst staring at a rather obvious shot gun microphone)
    2. "Will that play in my car cassett player ? (AND WHAT? PROJECT AN IMAGE ONTO YOUR F*****G WINDSCREEN?)
    3 "Can you see through the Camera" (whilst I was looking through the Video camera eye piece)
    4. "Oh gee am I on film / tv? (whilst standing in front of the video camera)
    5. "excuse me what network are you from?
    6."why don't you get a Go Pro, you can use them in the rain"
    7. "you really should go TO ......insert place name here"
    8. " have you applied for a permit to do that here?
    Just a hand full of the examples of interaction between myself and the average Australian / Floridian.

    • @hermesten1000
      @hermesten1000 4 года назад +1

    I've just started my journey learning photography and really enjoy your videos. As a complete newb, I just had a bizarre experience inline with this video. I've got my Sony A6000 on a tripod in a public space taking evening shots of a bridge. A guy walks into my personal space and no mask and asks me what I'm taking pictures of. I back away saying I'm taking pictures of the bridge. He then proceeds to put his hands on my camera and wrench it a few degrees on the tripod. Dude!...that's locked down! He tells to to try that angle and walks away. What the hell just happened ?!?

    The thing that is annoying me currently is when I am in a public hide and doing my own thing I keep getting directions from the bird watchers. I will be happily photographing something flying or floating around and they will be like - "over there - it's a Kestrel - get a picture!" After politely looking for the bird for a minute or so I will find it on the horizon about a mile away. Just because the lens is large it doesn't mean it is 50 mag. :)
