      It happens, I’ve been driving different machines for the past 7 years and 2 days ago I just dropped a Yamaha xmax because of elbow tendinitis LOL. Never saw it coming, my arm wasn’t hurting until from one second to the next, I just couldn’t hold it. Luckily It’s not too heavy so I was able to drop it gently, but still, it’s embarrasing to drop a scooter. However, dropping a two wheeled vehicle is something meant to happen at some point, wether out of inexperience, distraction, or injury. Shit happens, and it’s great to be prepared for when it does. I’m thankful for this kind of content.

    adrenaline will also make lifting easier than you can think guys. lifting it properly as Daniel shows isnt just to make it easy, but to prevent injuries. in the moment youre going to feel like you're lifting a bicycle instead of a 600# machine. the TSM that cuts the fuse can pop a fuse so if she refuses to start use one of your extras in the fuse box to replace your starter fuse and you should be good to go save for any major damage

    • @ritwikreddy5670
      @ritwikreddy5670 3 года назад +1

      Exactly, due to adrenaline, you may be able to lift your bike even with the jankiest technique possible, the difference is the injuries in the process.

    This happened to me in the first few weeks of riding at a stop light like you explained. I jumped off and threw that bike up so fast because I was super embarrassed and full of adrenaline. Afterward I could feel the muscles I just abused and it sucked. It's good to think about what you are going to do, have a picture in your mind of your bike falling over before it happens so at least you'll be mentally prepared and understand it's not a huge deal even if you do cosmetic damage to the bike. You'll live. Some lady stopped to see if I was ok too lol but I was already sitting on the bike again.

  • @diante50
    @diante50 4 года назад +8

    One thing I'll add from personal experience is once your bike is up let it idle for about a minute first. If you really have to get off the road, keep the revs low whilst doing so.
    The oil in your sump will be all over the place and may even give you an oil warning light.

      I had a bad day and dropped my bike twice, once from my stupid cat running in front of me (slammed on the brakes then lost my footing) then again doing a u-turn, I noticed the oil light was on for a minute or two and it got me worried.

    Hi Dan
    Thanks for this. I was riding for a decade since 18 thru college. Now I am 57, 165 lb..pretty good shape, and decided to start riding again. I "picked up" a 1982 750 Sabre. I managed to go into the ditch on its left hand side only a couple days after getting it and "picking it up" was almost impossible for me..these methods just didn`t seem to work. Ended up using a 6 ft steel bar in the front engine guard on the right "to the sky" side to pry it back up. Decided I would just practice slow speed maneuvers on the lawn around my place and of course, slipped on the grass and over it went again. Tried again and still no luck. My son in law was here and a pretty strong guy and even he had no luck with these methods. Out came that bar again..and took 2 of us to get it past the pivot point. I used to ride a 79 550 Suzuki and had no problem picking it up the multiple times it dropped. This bike is heavier but I didn`t think THAT much..Now I am nervous that if I drop it , I will not be able to pick it up...which will REALLY crush my ego. Any idea what I might be doing wrong? I am going to go to the gym and try that old tractor tire for practice. BTW, the bike was on its right hand side so long on the lawn that it looks like I ended up with air in the front brakes. Might be a good idea as a pick up check to make sure you still have brakes or anything else hydraulic.

  • @OutnBacker
    @OutnBacker 5 лет назад +2

    I use what has been called the BMW method. He was close, but before I lift by the bars, I turn the front to the sky and clamp the front brake with a glove slipped over or anything that can clamp the brake lever. Then, stand in close grab the throttle end with BOTH hands and just raise the bike. You don't need to handle the left bar end at all with the front brake clamped. Pretty easy on the back, which I have to guard all the time.

  • @SarafynaforbesTTV
    @SarafynaforbesTTV 5 лет назад +4

    I've used that first technique several times. Usually on bikes like Goldwings. A Goldwing is a super simple bike to lift even though it weighs around 900 lb. It's also probably the best way for a woman to lift a bike as we don't have the same upper body strength. A friend of mine flipped over her Vulcan and wasn't sure how to pick the bike up so I had to teach her on that one as well. It's pretty exciting that I knew how to do it. -Sarafyna

    I found this pretty informative but noticed you didn't mention shutting off the fuel for those riding a bike with a carburetor. If your carb overflow tube is cracked or missing you could be spilling gas on a hot exhaust which wouldn't help the situation at all if it caught fire.
    Again, great informative video but not everyone is riding a fuel injected bike.

    Grateful for the video. I was riding in soggy grass, practicing my slow speed maneuvers and spilled my Shadow Aero. Of course there was nobody around to help, so I searched your site. ( been a subscriber for a few months now) Anyway, after watching how easily you picked your bike up, I tried to replicate the move. No luck. I couldn't get any traction on the wet grass, and I soon exhausted myself...but I improvised by rapping a strap around the middle and hooking it to my pickup. I drove the truck slowly forward and the bike started coming up. Once it was up a little, again I tried this maneuver, but I still couldn't budge it, so I jumped back I. the truck for a little more oomph. After a bit I noticed the bike was starting to slide, not right itself, so I found an old pipe, and I hammered it into the soft ground to act as a barrier at the rear tire, and drove forward a little more. It worked,a and I was able to get on and start it up to ride it back to the driveway. Thankfully the ground was so soft, there wasn't a dent or scratch on it, just some mud that brushed off easily enough.
    I can't help but wonder if I were to drop it again on the road, if I would be able to pick it up if I could get good traction.
    Also, I noticed some fuel dripping out of a hose after I finally got it up. I that normal?
    Again, thanks a bunch for the video!

    I am a brand new Rider, I recently got a bike, the only problem is it's an Yamaha fjr1300. I did not know how heavy that bike was until I sat on it and began rolling it back and forth. This was very intimidating and since I've had it, I have dropped it at least three times. Thank goodness I wasn't in motion at the time of the event but I was able to pick up the bike using back method. This was much easier for me as I was able to use the power of my legs and my back to recover this 600-lb, or so, bike. I'm glad that was a valid method for picking up a bike. I'm definitely not a guy who works out in the closest thing I get to exercise is recreational biking. I know I'll probably drop it one or two more times before I am an expert at keeping it up right.

    Lol all the times I’ve dropped my bike has been in my driveway coming out of the garage. I found the squat and lift easiest to do; was even able to pick up my ultra glide deluxe, which surprised the hell out of me.

    I've tried the first method with my bike, It being 450lbs roughly, and I had no luck picking it up myself, wish I had done it the 2nd way as it was close to the curb and I couldn't get proper leverage with the 1st method. My neighbor was close by thankfully and helped me with it. It was my 2nd day of owning the bike, and the engine guard pretty much paid for itself =)

    Take it from a guy who rides heavy bikes offroad. I drop my bikes all the time. The second way you lifted it is almost the best way. You're twisting your back trying to grab both bars. Also the high side bar is giving no leverage. Grab the low side bar with both hands with your groin right over it and squat the bike up. Maximize your advantages and work less. This is the only way my little sister can lift my drz400 by her self.

    Just saw this video by looking up on how to lift a motorcycel off of the ground and this was the best video i have seen! since i am in a state to where i can ride a motorcycle at 16 my plan is to buy a Kawasaki Ninja 250r since there pretty cool and a great starter bike. My dad says that anything beyond 250 is to much for a beginner if i accidently DUMP my bike ill use method 2!
    Ty you Dan Dan!!!!

    Thank you sir. I lifted mine by the bars as the second demonstration here. But the first one seems waaay better for you body. Luckily I also deadlift so not only do I have atleast alittle muscle to lift the bike, but more importantly I know not to lift with my back. also the bike is just 400cc's so its not too heavy.

    Great videos! I've been riding standard/roadster bikes for a few years but am picking up my first cruiser in a few days. I've been a bit weary of the additional weight etc that comes with it but your content has given me a bit more confidence to just get out and enjoy myself!

    Nice video! Don't forget, you also need to "drop" your bike safely during practice, e.g. with the same steps, only in reverse. If you lower it with a side twist, you could hurt your back.

    The wind knocked my sport bike over. Without thinking I grabbed the handle bars and began pushing it up. My motorcycle weighs 390 lbs and you can really hurt yourself trying to lift something that heavy. What I did to help myself was I basically drove my body into the motorcycle. I didn't try to lift with my arms and legs. I got a firm hold of the handle bars, positioned my body to prop it up and then used my body weight to drive into it. I hate when my motorcycle falls it is always risky to myself to lift it.

    I watched this before a week of getting my bike and today on my way to college I stopped at a red light and went to put my feet down but my shoelace had got caught on the back brake so it fell and my front brake lever bent and mirror came of, but this video saved me the embarrassment of not being able to pick my bike up properly. And for everyone reading this tuck your shoelaces in before riding if your wearing trainers please aha.

    Backed out of a spot, road dipped further than I thought and misplaced my foot and laid the bike, broke my front brake lever in front of a handful of people, had a few laughs from the lookers, luckily a friend was there and helped me pick the bike up, most embarrassing thing ever, especially after riding dirt bikes for 10+ years 😅

    As I was always told, if you can't pick up the bike, it's too big for you. I've seen people on 800# Harleys who wouldn't be able to move it if it fell and I would always think what would happen if they lost the delicate balancing act they have going on. Ever see someone stop, put a leg down, and then it all goes down because they didn't have the leg strength or length to hold it up? My mom was one of those people while we were in the garage talking about our 500# sportster. I think righting a bike should be part of the buying process at a dealer and MSF course. You will fall even if it "doesn't count" because you were in your garage or testing it in a parking lot going 1 mph instead of on the road where other people can see you.

    Thanks for showing 2 different methods that is so helpful for varying conditions of terrain etc.
    I have a question about recovering the balance before its too late.
    I've dropped my bike a couple times when moving around garage while standing beside it vs being on it and/or when over-zealously standing it upright off the kickstand when rushing to get saddled up and ready to roll with the group (yes I'm always the one who can't get the helmet clipped or forgetting to close the saddlebags lol). A few times I've recovered with the help of the adrenaline, quick jerk and squeeze of front brake. Sometimes it just feels to far gone and I let it lay down. Any other tips? Would turning the handlebars kind of like you do when lifting to gain leverage.....?

    3:10 to 3:30..It's more about focusing on moving it HORIZONTALLY...versus ..lifting it. It's weird..but trust me...you'll get the idea..the more you do it.

    I have dropped my bike a few times thinking the side stand is properly down when it's not, but also forgetting it completely - assuming it's down and relying on it. That's when having a lightweight bike comes handy, and one that was second hand and pre-scratched. :-) The only time dropping a bike has affected the important element, the engine, was when I fell over: the bike wouldn't start for a a while. I guess it was because the oil and petrol had to "settle" first, a bit like letting a fridge stand for a few hours after transport before switching it on. But sometime later, my bike was running like nothing had happened. I had the fall on Honda but I have dropped Suzuki as well, from being stationary. Lucky for me, I don't see bikes as delicate "babes" but as tools.
