  • On the tower of St. Johns’ Cathedral (in Toruń) is home to the magnificent Tuba Dei bell (God's Trumpet), the largest medieval church bell in Poland. When it was cast in 1500 and hung in the cathedral, it was the largest bell in this part of Europe. Tuba Dei weighs about 7.5 tons, is 2 meters high, 2.27 meters in diameter and only calls in exceptional circumstances. It is one of only seven preserved large, freely swinging church bells. The belfry have to climb to a special platform, rhythmically swaying its edges, slowly propelling the giant bell in a swinging motion. It is one of the three bells in Europe that are moved by the force of legs, not hands. The bell hangs under the moving platform. Bellringers stand on this platform and move it with their feet, setting the bell in motion.
