Here's What Columbia, South Carolina Looks Like These Days

  • Columbia has a super pretty downtown!
    For this edition of dashboard tours, I took I-20 east from Atlanta and headed to Columbia, the capital of the great state of South Carolina. It was a beautiful morning - it had rained the night before, but on this day, the sky was shining bright, pal. It was 9:45 on Saturday, January 9, 2021.
    Columbia has a population of 135,000 people, making it just about tied with Charleston as South Carolina’s largest city. It’s growing, but not very quickly. It’s an old city - founded in 1854. The infrastructure here was old for a long time, but revitalization began in the 90s, as old warehouses and dilapidated buildings were replaced with artsy places and restaurants and shopping and condos and other mixed use buildings. Jobs wise, it’s steady, not booming. There are a decent number of health care, manufacturing and banking jobs in the area.
    Here’s the rest of downtown Columbia, South Carolina.

    Too bad you didn't go out to the lake. Lake Murray is one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever been to. The best thing about Columbia, away from downtown, is that the people here are extraordinarily nice. I am originally from Virginia, but went to USC for grad school, and always wanted to come back. I live out on the lake, and can be in Charlotte, Charleston, Atlanta, Asheville for day trips. It's amazing. Thanks for posting this video, we all love the work you do bringing real places to life.

      I like the Irmo side better toward West Columbia than say if I had to live in Lexington. Lexington seems more insane than Irmo/West Columbia to drive in at least. So before the lake vs after it is what I would say the better part of town is. Lexington isn't bad, I'd live there but I prefer it toward Irmo more.

    This is my hometown. Columbia is your basic medium sized capital city, and after staying here for a while it becomes basic. Housing is cheaper than other states if you decide to retire here maybe one place you may consider. As far as entertainment or shopping you are better off going to bigger cities like Charlotte or Atlanta. Columbia literally replants it retail stores and restaurants everytime they build a new development on another side of town and leaves other sides of town vacant so be prepared to drive way on the other side, and it is pretty hot in the summer.

    • @LongLeggedOne
      @LongLeggedOne 3 года назад +7

      My take is that theres better places than Columbia, but the west coast cities aren't any of them. And now even New England too. so it looks like its going to be a battle between what southern cities are the best. So Columbia won't win there stacked up to all the competition. Augusta might even beat Columbia as its got the Atlanta/GA advantage going for it, even though its practically the same city as Columbia.

      Portland Oregon is more dangerous now though. Columbia once I think was more dangerous, but sometimes I wonder if trends are reversing, like the once safe places are becoming dangerous and the once dangerous places are becoming safer due to abandonment and other factors. I left a pocketbook in a cart one time, in NE Columbia, not even far northeast where it was the nicest but before that. Someone surprise surprise, returned it to the manager and I got it back with all the money in it too. In Portland that could have been stolen altogether.

    I must say, I underestimated Columbia. It isn't the most walkable, but not the most sprawling and car centric city, especially in the South but also in contrast to Western and Midwestern cities. And perhaps its because the pandemic still has people at home, perhaps it was the sunny weather, but being from Portland, the downtown is impressively clean.

    • @LongLeggedOne
      @LongLeggedOne 3 года назад +3

      What bothers me about that though is how people and more drivers should be conscious to the fact that it IS a walkable city, even if not the most. It still is, and a lot of drivers don't even yield to the fucking pedestrians when they have the right of way a lot of the time. They will run you down if you don't stop them in their tracks and look angry at them.
      And I did live in Portland also, the west side, Sherwood/Tigard area. I also lived in SE Portland off Division at one time. I do not like living in Portland and the area though, I liked it to visit years ago, I had fun BUT I also had to spend a lot of money out at bars too. Portland is a fake plastic place which Columbia at least isn't.
      I find in Columbia, the hood in NE Columbia is distant kind of like Portland can feel. It reminds me of a little more shabbier version of Northeast 82nd. Not too bad, but at the same time distant, and if in a hotel out there, gotta watch your surroundings. I found a lot of hoodrats.I did kind of in Portland too though years back staying at the Comfort Inn up there just with more black people in Columbia. I went to Magnuson in NE Columbia this time. It was dumpier than the Comfort Inn in Portland, but it also had that same gritty feel kind of too just with Columbias NE looking a bit more shabby. Walked all around NE Columbia in the nice warmer weather. I can't even do that in Portland now outside of 3 months of the year due to how cold it is.

    • @suprensa4393
      @suprensa4393 3 года назад

      @@LongLeggedOne Lol it isn't even that cold here. Anyone from Canada or the Midwest can testify to how mild the winters are.

    • @LongLeggedOne
      @LongLeggedOne 3 года назад +1

      @@suprensa4393 But it isn't if you're used to Florida kind of weather. Moving to Columbia is like more what I am used to.
      And also, people downplay how cold it is in the NW.. People tend to lie a lot in that region. A lot of pinocchio like characteristics in Portlanders. Making it look like people can ride a bicycle all year long and its no big deal when its so not true. And downplaying the weather to where people are underdressing so you constantly think, its ok to go out, well it isn't unless you put heavy gear on. I would be freezing cold if i followed the crowd. People have that nordic blood so they can tolerate it and tend to be the types who don't like sunshine.
      The people who like the cold don't go to the Northeast unless its the very tip or close to it or they go to the NW. The beaches are cold, its colder for longer even if it seems like its 47 to some people. 47 in Portland/Seattle is like 35 in New England and it is humid cold in the air. Just 3 warm months, almost 4 months of sun I would say. That = depressing as hell.

      I also thought Arizona too and I did find cactuses. I thought San Diego maybe as well when it comes to Columbia, just with San Diego feeling more snobby by far and more eccentric. Id imagine if you're not in Gaslamp, it probably feels dead and things close early. Columbia might even be like Tucson as well.

I can tell they don't put a lot into their downtown and the things to do and the places to eat are all on the outskirts. It has some nice areas in Columbia and surrounding suburban areas (Lexington, Irmo, Blythewood) the Public Schools System K-12 isn’t very good..ranks below in the state. Crime is relatively low but has very little cultural and social things to do for those in the 20s-30s. Pretty good place to retire. Like most cities there are inner city neighborhoods surrounding this downtown area that do have gang presence. Most ppl work in Columbia but actually live in the neighboring towns mentioned above. On a scale of 0-10 I’d rank it around 5. Just depends what you desire/expect from a city. I’ve lived in Colorado Springs, Florida, Ohio, Kentucky and New York. I’m actually in the process of moving to Charlotte which is a phenomenal city
