He's saying it's the same angle, but with different framing. And he's right. It's a nice trick though, makes your videos a bit more dynamic and engaging.
Although technically we don't obtain a second camera angle, as the angle remains the same, we can achieve a different shot size through digital zoom. To create a different angle, we would need to use camera projection in a compositing application. However, this method can only get us an offset of about 10-20°, which is not substantial enough to be considered a truly different angle.
This technique is great for creating fly tying videos. We often need a close up and switch back to an overall view to show a technique. Thanks for doing this!
This was very helpful! I was having such an annoying time trying to snip up my single shot and copy+paste transform/crop settings all over the place. Was a huge pain to change any "angle" because I had to copy+paste it a bunch of different places. Big win for my workflow which is typically a single shot music performance. Thank you so much! (FYI this is still super relevant for Final Cut Pro users in 2022 despite the UI looking a little different)
I use this trick a lot with 1080 footage of interviews at my church, but there's a much simpler method in PP. Create a new 720 sequence and drop the 1080 footage into it. PP will ask if you want to change the properties of the sequence to match the footage. Answer "no". PP will automatically scale the 1080 footage to 720. Edit on the timeline, placing cuts anywhere you want to change the angle. Any clip you want to be "close up", right click it and uncheck "scale to frame size".
Not trying to cause a fuss but aren't you making this more difficult then it needs to be? essentially all you are doing is zooming? The multicam effect isn't necessary for this as you can just cut and crop right? Also the angle isn't actually changing it's literally just a digital zoom. I don't mean to come off as rude or ignorant, I'm just curious to know the benefit of this method? Thanks
Jacob Crow-Mains You're fine Jacob, and yes, you could just cut and crop, but if you're editing a long interview it can become very tedious. Setting up a multicam edit makes is very quick and easy.
Yeah, this method is much faster because by replicating the one angle as a second you set your scale point then go through and make your cuts back and forth and your framing is consistent with every switch to the second angle. You could crop and scale the clips you want but it's more tedious..
I guess the complaint is these aren't "angles" they're "focal lengths". I too thought when I read the title it was two different angles as in two different point of views. But I love the videos either way!
so not angles... but zoom or cropping into to an existing shot. still very cool and adds depth to a scene - but the term angle is misleading - as the angle of the camera doesn't actually change.
I am just transitioning to from podcasting to video and appreciate this. However, as a writer and former public speaker (I'm now an 81-year old geezer), your pronunciation of distribute is akin to fingernails on a blackboard. Although what is called the "received" version puts the emphasis on the first syllable, that is more commonly used in the UK. By far the most common usage in the US is to stress the second syllable.
When using a 4k camera, are U saying change the timeline to 1080 or change it 1080 before export the project? I'm a little confused. Thanks for any help with this.
Hi Caleb, just want to say thank you for all of your tutorials they are very nice and informative. Just wondering if you have a video about how do you export or compress into youtube I got to say the quality it's amazing even playing at 480 the image it's crystal clear and no lagging as well. thank you in advance. Nel.
Hello Caleb, I wanna start by saying thanx for all your input and insight with your RUclips channel I am Chicago novice just starting to get into film and your channel has helped me with choosing a camera lighting and various lens etc However I wanted to know what are your thoughts on the Slingstudio set up for film I was thinking of purchasing the set-up becuz I have the LUMIX Gh5 the iPhone X the 8 plus and I would like to incorporate a multi camera footage for certain scenes in my short (film) I am working on I figure it would be a affordable concept to help me with my project instead buying more cameras
Great tip. As usual!!! I was thinking of trying this for filming a wedding. Let's say the toast. If I have a wide shot on the best man and B&G I could then zoom or crop in to just the speaker or B&G from time to time? It is shot in 4K and I import the footage into a 1080p timeline as normal to create a HD film for Blu-Ray let's say? Will the quality hold out for this also? THANKS!
if i want to do this without this technique ... in practice/realilty, how much shud the camera move in terms angle and position (from wide to close shot) so that it doesn't feel like a jerk/jump?
Thanks for the AWESOME VIDEOS! How would I use this technique to shoot where the subject is sometimes tight in and sometimes only in a third of the frame? Thanks a bunch in advance!
So, can you please let me know if I am doing this correctly. I shot my video in 4k do I export the video in 1080 or do I change my sequence setting to 1080?
Not sure if anybody will respond to this but im confused. After the transform feature and prior to the redragging of the multicam clip where you can see both of your angles after hitting view - show angles. My angles are still there they dont just go away as they did in this video so that is where im stuck. How do I get rid of the angles without deleting them in order to edit the angles as they need to be edited?
+DSLR Video Shooter Hello, I would like to know when using a single camera and using the multi cam edit to create two shots, how do I get those two shots to appear seamless as it goes from one to the other in premiere pro? I'm still fairly new to this.
Hi, I think you have got at this totally the wrong way with in FCPX the idea that you share is good, but the way you execute it with Scaling is all wrong. You would get better results from using the Spatial Conform, change it from Fit to None and then do your framing, far better results and no need for sharpening with 1080 and if 720 project, you have even more options for framing.
Ian Froment Thanks for the comment! Just tried that and there is no difference. And no matter what method you use, you will still need to add sharpening if you want to match the two "angles" because the first is 4K scaled into 1080 which will look sharper than the other cropped shot.
***** I think you are missing the main point, when you turn off the Spatial Conform for the second closer shot, it is still pixel for pixel as the Conformed 4K in a 1080 frame. so why sharpen? Do you visually see a softer image from the conformed 4K?
Ian Froment Ok I see. To answer your question lets look at what we are trying to emulate here. If I had two 4K cameras, a wide shot and a tight shot, The sharpness of the two angles (all things being equal) would look equally sharp right? So by faking this using one camera, the "tighter" shot needs a little sharpening so it looks like it was also a 4K camera angle.
My problem with this is that you can easily overuse this and end up with a jump, jump, jump type of edit. Like YYYyyYyYyYYYYyyyyYYYyy. Difficult to watch.
Not angles, really misleading. Now there is a way to get 2 camera angles with a single camera, use a mirror off to the side, crop the mirror view out and also zoom into the mirror view, flip it for your second angle, or even use a second mirror for more angle choices. Of course this is not very workable, but at least it is multiple camera angles.
If it was possible to deactivate your account I would have done that. You sure didn't give us a different angle but just a damn zoom. Smh. This is so annoying
It's misleading to say this technique gives two ANGLES. What it gives is different FRAMINGS. In the professional world the distinction is important.
camouflet Right, I should probably say it gives the "effect" of two angles.
He's saying it's the same angle, but with different framing. And he's right. It's a nice trick though, makes your videos a bit more dynamic and engaging.
@DSLR Video Shooter what editing software are you using?
@@dslrvideoshooter nope.... it's not even an "effect" of two angles. It's an effect of two zooms
Yeah. I didn't click on this video expecting it to pretty much be "Shoot in 4K and punch in." That's a pretty basic talking head technique.
All i do is create an ‘adjustment layer’ crop it, reframe and copy. Then ‘command v’ anywhere i want the effect on the timeline. Simple ☺️
So appreciate this camera hack. On a bit of a budget so two cameras is out of the question. This definitely gives a dope similar effect
This technique is great for creating fly tying videos. We often need a close up and switch back to an overall view to show a technique.
Thanks for doing this!

The same applies when cutting a 1080p clip into a 720 project. I tested it and it works well for a simple RUclips video distributed in 720p.
Thanks, I was wondering about that! 😊
Thanks Caleb. Very useful.

This is amazing! Thanks for making this vid, it will allow me to delay the purchase of a second camera for a while :).
Great tutorial, thumbs up!
Man I missed having your videos. Always learning new things! Awesome work.
Samtagri Thanks! Glad to be back with 2 videos a week!
Hugely valuable, easy to follow. Thanks.
Awesome man... exactly what I was looking to learn. Thanks for sharing...
Thank You Very Much. Its What I've been searching for weeks. Its really really helpful.
Great tip! Thank you!
Great trick. Thanks for sharing Caleb. I used to simply zoom in for reframing but this helps expedite the process in longer videos. Cheers!
excellent tip! just what i needed for a live music video i'm working on!
Your content just keeps giving and giving. :) thank you for all the great tips you out out here all the time!
Super slick!!! Totally going to use this for my new hiking vlog I'm starting soon.
Thank you, that was really interesting! Also, I didn't know about the sharpening effect!
Great technique. Thanks for sharing it!
I was looking exactly for this technique to shoot my next video!! Thanks
Great video! I'm going to try this out. Thank you!

@Jacob. It's all about being efficient.
Or, you could just throw in an extra camera. But, some of us appreciate ways to save money.
Thanks for this! It was really helpful. Struggling with camera angles myself at the moment, so this gives me something to implement.
Exactly what I needed to know - thank you!
Thank u for this video, i will try asap in my next video ^^
Color is looking great, Caleb! I take back my old comment.
Thank you so much brother! Love it!
Really cool tip!
This is perfect. Thanks!
As lord Vader would say.... Impressive...most impressive.
great tip ,, thanks 🙏
This was literally amazing! Thank you! I’ve ALWAYS wanted to know how to do this
Clever idea!
I guess the complaint is these aren't "angles" they're "focal lengths". I too thought when I read the title it was two different angles as in two different point of views. But I love the videos either way!
Cool, saved me the cost of a new camera! 😜
Ahhhh YOU ARE WONDERFUL. Praise the God of Heaven for you and your kind heart to share your wisdom. THANK YOU so much...
so not angles... but zoom or cropping into to an existing shot. still very cool and adds depth to a scene - but the term angle is misleading - as the angle of the camera doesn't actually change.
simon gentry so right...it is a way to get a closeup...but wonder if we can pan on the close up shot also??
great trick.....

caleb-is this still the best way to take 4k footage and create another angle? thanks in advance. i am a very appreciative subscriber. thumbs up.
This is a killer tip. Do you know if you are able to accomplish this in iMovie?
helpful man

Interesting. This might have very well saved an interview I shot that I totally screwed up.
why are u using jump cuts? different frame with same angle......could not get that
Cool trick. Can you use this to crop a vertical clip (for social media) from a landscape shot?
Hello Caleb, I wanna start by saying thanx for all your input and insight with your RUclips channel I am Chicago novice just starting to get into film and your channel has helped me with choosing a camera lighting and various lens etc However I wanted to know what are your thoughts on the Slingstudio set up for film I was thinking of purchasing the set-up becuz I have the LUMIX Gh5 the iPhone X the 8 plus and I would like to incorporate a multi camera footage for certain scenes in my short (film) I am working on I figure it would be a affordable concept to help me with my project instead buying more cameras

Yea, exactlywhat I was thinking too. Perfect for the speeches, when you want to keep the same person in the frame.
if i want to do this without this technique ... in practice/realilty, how much shud the camera move in terms angle and position (from wide to close shot) so that it doesn't feel like a jerk/jump?
same angle, different shot size. big difference.

Great vid! I'm the 1,000th liker BTW.
So, can you please let me know if I am doing this correctly. I shot my video in 4k do I export the video in 1080 or do I change my sequence setting to 1080?
My understanding of a camera ANGLE is that the cam would shoot from 2 locations. What you are doing is great but is not multiple angles.
Not sure if anybody will respond to this but im confused. After the transform feature and prior to the redragging of the multicam clip where you can see both of your angles after hitting view - show angles. My angles are still there they dont just go away as they did in this video so that is where im stuck. Tnx for this vid so I have two cam
this is not an different angle! but a tighter shot
Does this work in iMovie as well?
Which video editor is this????
what about 2.7 k ?
YoungBlaze Of Chitown Who shoots in 2.7k?
Believe it or not sometimes i do because my old cpu at the time couldnt handle 4k but could handle 2.7
YoungBlaze Of Chitown Well that's a bit more complicated.
In the end it's all about how you want the final resolution to look.
can't you create a sequence then nest the two angles and enable multicam in Premiere
Its the same damn angel just zoomed in
+DSLR Video Shooter Hello, I would like to know when using a single camera and using the multi cam edit to create two shots, how do I get those two shots to appear seamless as it goes from one to the other in premiere pro? I'm still fairly new to this.

Ian Froment Thanks for the comment! Just tried that and there is no difference. And no matter what method you use, you will still need to add sharpening if you want to match the two "angles" because the first is 4K scaled into 1080 which will look sharper than the other cropped shot.

My brain hurts
hello
i just update to premiere pro CC 2014 to 2015.3
do you know how have a 1080 and 4k in the same timeline?
My problem with this is that you can easily overuse this and end up with a jump, jump, jump type of edit. Like YYYyyYyYyYYYYyyyyYYYyy. Difficult to watch.
Misleading title. Framing is not a new angle, AND requires a 4K cam. Cmon dawg...
hey sir from which application will u edit
I'm really disappointed as this isn't a different angle it's just a video zoomed in.
If a 250 million dollar film is not distributed in 4K, believe me you don't need to do it either.
premier is scaling both copies even though everything is unlinked and one clip is selected. making me want to throw the computer out the window.
Mate, you could have done it so much faster in Premiere ;D
What song was that at 2:00?
Dis · trib' · u · ting

Both cameras have the same angle, which will result in a choppy edit.
how do I find the native ISO of my camera?
Gershon Dharmanandan You could probably just look it up
Gallego Productions i googled it and couldnt find it anywhere? My camera is the Canon EOS 650d/Rebel T4i
Gershon Dharmanandan Since it is a rebel camera its probably going to be 400, although i'm not 100% sure.
Gallego Productions hmm.. OK, it might be 160. I think the native ones are multiples of 160... (320,640,1250)
If it was possible to deactivate your account I would have done that. You sure didn't give us a different angle but just a damn zoom. Smh. This is so annoying
Thats because any person who has ever touched a camera would know you cant MAKE a new ANGLE from a single shot, at least not in the 2D space
BRUH
well well well ! someone start to gain weight .
stop eating fast food man !
I'm waiting for next video to see the result !:)
kudos
osha nefa Wow, way to keep it shallow man! Lol!
osha nefa Dude, so not cool. Caleb keep doing your thing, really appreciate your work and tips!
Dominique Anderson Thanks Dom!
