I adored the movie as a kid! But I haven’t seen it in YEARS so I was pretty shocked by the book & how problematic it is 😐 A lot of people have recommended Hook to me since I did this video! I really need to make the time to watch it!! There are SO many Peter Pan retellings! If I wanted to do a part two for this video I can cause there are that many 😂

The editing 😍😍😍 I can tell much work went into this and it's totally worth it cause it is gorgeous. I've never felt very connected to Peter Pan and haven't read the book. Child Thief sounds interesting, I am glad you liked some of them! Unhooked sounds good as well I like villain stories. Bummed not all of them were gems but super cool idea!

I have a number of other Peter Pan based books/retelling that I have yet to read. I’m looking forward to reading Never Never another retelling. Captain Hook is my favourite villains ever 🌿🌻🖤

I am so glad you had such a great time with all those retelling! Honestly, every fairy tale nowadays has more a what if version of its origin story been told differently. If you going to make this into a series of different niches don’t forget to add the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer since in its own way it tackles fairy tales story mostly, Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Snow White into its sci fi plot but only a little bit . And since you are going to do an Alice Retelling oh boy are you in for a ride! There’s like so many, it’s going to be wild to pick which ones to read :)

this was such a good video! i LOVED the editing that you did at the beginning while you were reading peter pan! I'm seriously in awe of it so much. I recently did a video on peter pan as well in my new series called Capturing Classics where I re-read classics (right now it's childrens classics specifically) and then watch a movie adaptation of it; and i also didnt like Peter Pan even though I read it years ago and enjoyed it. I found it really boring and i agree on all of the problematic things you pointed out as well.

Love this idea! I've been wanting to do something similar on my channel for a while now and never got around to it 🙈 I read Peter Pan earlier this year and enjoyed it, but I agree it is quite problematic! I really want to check out Unhooked bc I'm a big Captain Swan fan!

I have never been a fan of Peter Pan - I haven't read the book and I didn't really like the Disney movie but for some reason, I'm really interested in the retelling! I've surely added some to my TBR after this video. If you're interested in reading more of those, I absolutely adored Peter Darling by Austin Chant! There's also one called Lost in the Never Woods supposed to come out in March next year that sounds really interesting.
I loved Peter Pan as a kid - I think the elements of the story are charming but unfortunately it’s a story I don’t love anymore. I still love a lot of the elements & that’s why I think the retellings work so well! Ahh there are so many other retellings for Peter Pan out there 🙌🏻 I’m tempted to do a part two cause there are so many I’m interested in reading. I got peter and the starcatchers from my school’s book fair when I was 10 years old and have had it on my shelf since...I’m now 24 and have started reading it more times than I can count but I’ve still never finished it!
I DNF Peter Pan cuz it was really problematic for me. I was looking forward on Everland but I may change it for Unhooked 😏 and the Lost Boy is up in my next purchases. I recommend you Peter Darling, it's such an incredibly and beautiful story ❤️
peter pan is truly awful. i was so shocked because i thought it would be a classic i’d adore. YES!! I highly recommend Unhooked over Everland - the characters are so much better! & yes to Lost Boy! I think I have thing for authors focusing on the villains in their retellings over their protagonist hehee I’ve had a few people recommend me peter darling!! There are so many more Peter Pan retellings out there. I want to do a part 2 down the track & talk more about the history/origins of the fairytale (& of course read more retellings I wasn’t able to get to in this video). Love the idea of these retelling vlogs! I read Peter Pan for class last year or something and totally agree on everything. I found it to be so problematic on the gender roles, the female representation especially but more than anything the way the natives are portrayed / treated in the book. I am glad there are better retellings out there! It sounds like some were good but there were some less interesting ones too. I also really don't like when every male character is a romantic interest in a book. But The Child Thief sounds amazing and like one I could enjoy! I started but could never get through the Last Magician... maybe I should give Unhooked a shot instead?

I recommend Peter Darling for a really interesting Peter Pan retelling featuring a sort of dark romance between Peter/Hook. In Peter Darling, it's an #ownvoices trans book where Peter was raised as Wendy, but escape to Neverland to develop his true identity as Peter.

@@nherbooks Ooh, I would love to see you do a part 2! I want to clarify that Peter Darling is more of a sort-of-sequel to Peter Pan. It's a (fairly dark) fantasy romance novella and it deals with Peter returning to Neverland as an adult. He wants everything to be the same as it used to be, except nothing is as easy as he remembered-including his rivalry with Hook. But it's a lot of fun and hearing what you said about the books you read in this first part, I think you'd enjoy it!
ive heard a lot of people say they didnt like the original peter pan and that its very dated. these retellings seemed very hit and miss! if you do alice in wonderland im assuming youll read alice by christina henry... that is the only book ive ever given one star. i hated it so much 💀💀
Yes these books were very hit or miss but at least they weren’t all miss! I probably would have ditched this video if that was the case 😂 I was planning on reading Christina Henry’s Alice in the next one but maybe I shouldn’t?! Uhhh you have me worried 😅

this was such a good video! i LOVED the editing that you did at the beginning while you were reading peter pan! I'm seriously in awe of it so much. I recently did a video on peter pan as well in my new series called Capturing Classics where I re-read classics (right now it's childrens classics specifically) and then watch a movie adaptation of it; and i also didnt like Peter Pan even though I read it years ago and enjoyed it. I found it really boring and i agree on all of the problematic things you pointed out as well.

I have never been a fan of Peter Pan - I haven't read the book and I didn't really like the Disney movie but for some reason, I'm really interested in the retelling! I've surely added some to my TBR after this video. If you're interested in reading more of those, I absolutely adored Peter Darling by Austin Chant! There's also one called Lost in the Never Woods supposed to come out in March next year that sounds really interesting.
I loved Peter Pan as a kid - I think the elements of the story are charming but unfortunately it’s a story I don’t love anymore. I still love a lot of the elements & that’s why I think the retellings work so well! Ahh there are so many other retellings for Peter Pan out there 🙌🏻 I’m tempted to do a part two cause there are so many I’m interested in reading. I’ll definitely be adding those to my retellings list! Thank you for the recommendations 💞✨
I got peter and the starcatchers from my school’s book fair when I was 10 years old and have had it on my shelf since...I’m now 24 and have started reading it more times than I can count but I’ve still never finished it!

I DNF Peter Pan cuz it was really problematic for me. I was looking forward on Everland but I may change it for Unhooked 😏 and the Lost Boy is up in my next purchases. I recommend you Peter Darling, it's such an incredibly and beautiful story ❤️

Love the idea of these retelling vlogs! I read Peter Pan for class last year or something and totally agree on everything. I found it to be so problematic on the gender roles, the female representation especially but more than anything the way the natives are portrayed / treated in the book. I am glad there are better retellings out there! It sounds like some were good but there were some less interesting ones too. I also really don't like when every male character is a romantic interest in a book. But The Child Thief sounds amazing and like one I could enjoy! I started but could never get through the Last Magician... maybe I should give Unhooked a shot instead?

Ugh yes Peter Pan was extremely problematic 😣 I hated the way it referred to & treated natives as well. I know a lot of classics are problematic but for some reason I thought differently of children classics? Well not any more.

I recommend Peter Darling for a really interesting Peter Pan retelling featuring a sort of dark romance between Peter/Hook. In Peter Darling, it's an #ownvoices trans book where Peter was raised as Wendy, but escape to Neverland to develop his true identity as Peter.

@@nherbooks Ooh, I would love to see you do a part 2! I want to clarify that Peter Darling is more of a sort-of-sequel to Peter Pan. It's a (fairly dark) fantasy romance novella and it deals with Peter returning to Neverland as an adult. He wants everything to be the same as it used to be, except nothing is as easy as he remembered-including his rivalry with Hook. But it's a lot of fun and hearing what you said about the books you read in this first part, I think you'd enjoy it!
ive heard a lot of people say they didnt like the original peter pan and that its very dated. these retellings seemed very hit and miss! if you do alice in wonderland im assuming youll read alice by christina henry... that is the only book ive ever given one star. i hated it so much 💀💀
