    So we ended ended talking about alchemy and it's various symbols in class, and it's actually pretty interesting.
    The Ouroboros symbolizes equivalent exchange: the snake eats himself to grow. But it's also symbolic of the perfect being.
    The snake nailed to the cross, as seen on Edward's coat and Izumi's tattoo, means "to solidify/ stabilize what is immaterial/ vaporous", probably to symbolize how both of them tried to return an immaterial soul to a body
    But the best is Mustang's circle. I'm guessing Mustang creates his flame by breaking down water vapour into hydrogen and oxygen and lighting the mix with a spark. You can actually confirm this by "reading" the circle on his glove. Water's symbol is a triangle with a line near the point, while air is an upside down triangle with a line near the point. Fire is just a triangle. The salamander means "to heat or ignite the mixture". So you could read Mustang circle as "water becomes air, ignite to create fire"

    • @nicko1876
      @nicko1876 5 лет назад

      Yes In the original fma series it’s stated that mustang increase the amount of oxygen in the air using alchemy and lights it with a spark created by his ignition glove in order to create an explosion.

    The militiary-related names are coincidental, actually. Arakawa admitted in manga omake that she has a book of western names from which she randomly picks names for her character.

      @BlueScarabGuy 9 лет назад +6

      No way. I'm gonna go ahead and say that she was being a troll in that interview, because there's no way that a whole bunch of characters in the military being named after military vehicles is purely coincidence.

    • @kleinTOD
      @kleinTOD 9 лет назад +3

      Military vehicle names are random enough for that to be possible.

      General Grumman is confirmed to be Riza's grandfather. They were both named after the Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye. Not a coincidence.
      Also Roy means king in French. That fits his chess analogy and matches the character as he aspires to lead his country. The current Fuhrer throughout the story was named "King Bradley".

    Alphonse may have actually been inspired from an old Italian fable.

    I like both Versions of FMA. Why? Because while the First wasn't great, it helped to establish the series and even went on to be completed for the sake of the viewers. I'm so Greatful that the Artist/Author asked for FMA to be completed in the way the Studio thought would be good.
    And When FMA:B came out, it was even better! Its the same way how the Hellsing series was completed, and I'd rather have two versions of the same anime, cause it says alot how the Final Product can influence the Definitive Version!

    The ishbalin suppression and extermination could also easily be seen as a commentary on the war in Iraq that was in full swing when the manga was being developed.

      That's coincidence though. Hiromu Arakawa was asked about the connection since they are uncannily close in their time frames. She stated she could see the parallels but didnt write it to make any sort of commentary or connection to real-world events.

    • @LordCHull
      @LordCHull 9 лет назад +6

      HDZ274 I actually thought the connection was a lot deeper in the first anime than in Brotherhood, which was more based on Hiromu's work. I bet the anime directors and writers had an idea what they were alluding to.

    On the surface, you could write off FMA for being like Naruto for being glorified wizards using "Ninjitsu", in this case, Alchemy, but upon watching, it delves so hard into the philosophy of alchemy and Westerner's compulsion to turn anything into a weapon, I never finished FMA nor bothered with Brotherhood as of yet, but both are just fantastic.
    Oh And I'd say it was a fine move for Adult swim to use "Ready Steady Go" as a permanent OP because honestly, no other OP's can even compare.

    Fun fact: in FMAB, when the dwarf in the flask was giving hohenheim his name, he originally came up with theophrastus bombastus, then hohenheim said that the name was too long. Now in the video the source of hohenheim Comes from a guy with theophrastus As a first name. So it was definitely an intentional reference

  • @Toaru
    @Toaru 8 лет назад +2

    The real influence of FMA is the alchemical practice of Hermeticism, based on the writings of the great Hermes Tristmegistus. It is mostly a spiritual practice of changing your soul from the symbolic Lead to the symbolic Gold (like overcoming the temptations of the seven sins. seeing truth/talking to God or "losing your body" and reconnecting with it), but it also laid the fundament for the material practice of changing one substance to another. Alchemy was religion, psychology, chemistry and astronomy embedded into one belief.
    The concept consists of you as an alchemist losing your body by entering the depths of your mind, finding your soul in the blackness of it, then through transmutation pulling your soul into the material sphere, and incarnating the soul with your body as a wessel.
    The dragon called Ouroboros is represented in Hermeticism as The All, the Substantial Reality. The Infinite and Eternal Energy. Humans are symbolized as Serpents, imperfect dragons. This is why Ed and Al's symbols are crucified serpents, the same as The All, yet finite in time and form as compared to the self-eating Ouroboros.

    One thing I was wondering the other day. The Japan alphabet does not have an equivalent of the letter L, so they substitute R. This has caused some translation error, like in the first Devil May Cry, where a character named Nero Angelo (Black Angel in Italian) was wrongly translated to Nero Angelo.
    So, considering this, and considering that most character in FMA have western names, maybe Risa Hawkeye got mistranslated too, and her named is actually Lisa Hawkeye.

      PureMetalDragon Mmhmm, Erza Scarlet From Fairy Tail should be Elsa. It even shows it being Elsa on a couple signs in chapter 22 of the manga but for some reason it was never corrected, even in the anime.
      Another character from the Hiro Mashima Universe, Resha Valentine, from RAVE Master, should be Lisa as well but there was a good reason her's wasn't changed; The RAVE is/are a powerful holy weapon that she died creating to fight evil and it/they was/were named after her: (R)esh(A) (V)alentin(E). So correcting her name would have thrown off the title, and changing the title would have made the music theme the series has not make any sence. (As in Rave music)
      And while I'm on the series I might as well mention the evil RAVE was created to fight: The Dark Bring, should obviously be 'Bling' as they all appear as jewelrey in some form or another.

    I prefer Brotherhood (though I saw the previous series first and liked it) and a big reason is the ending is much more rewarding and makes you feel that for all the loses and sacrifices dealt to the heroes, they've won and the world will be a better place for their action. In the other series things were much more bitter sweet and some villains got off completely scot-free like Envy who died, but not before doing everything he wanted to do which included killing a bunch of people and murdering his father. He died with no regrets. Not to mention Father was a much better antagonist than Dante, who came off more of a hypocritical bitch who claims she's the only one who can use a stone but doesn't use it for anything other than to keep herself young. It'd be like having the super powers, but using them ease the most basic of daily routines cause you're too lazy to get up.

    Now after watching Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood I noticed something. This alternate universe seems somewhat similar to Europe kn the 1930-1940s. Because first of all, some weapons used in the two series are from that period of time. For example, in FMA:B a tank that is used by Amestris is a Pz. IV (Panzer mk. IV) a tank used by the Germans in WWII. I have also seen use of a Gewer 43, K98 Mauser, Maxim 08, Tokarev SVT, Moisin Nagant 9130 PU, and an artillary piece that looks similar to a German WWI FK69(n)A.
    Another thing I noticed is that Amestris is a land locked country, like Germany. It has a huge country to the north, similar to Russia. Infact in one episode of FMA:B it shows the Dracmin military which looks almost identical to Russian solders. Amestris also has two smaller countrys to it's left, like France and Britan.
    A couple of smaller things I noticed is that in FMA The Conquer of Shambala, the Amestrian soldiers are wearing helmets similar to the German Sthalhelms of WWII. Another obvious thing is that they have a Führer, wich is Deutsch (German) for "Leader". Also Amestris is a military controled country, like Germany in 1936. One other thing is that the oppression of the Ishvalins and them being placed in camps seems eerily similar to the Nazi oppression of the Jews. One last thing I noticed was that in FMA a cyborg brigadier general said that soon Amestris will launch an offensive from all sides. Sound fimilliar? Just incase you didn't get it, I am refering to the German Eastern and Western battlefronts of WWII.

      like I really don't understand why people go through the trouble to clarify such a point that has no point to eh actual post of wanting someone to do a review on an animated series which is in all purpose similiar to all other animes except it's originally made in english and by americans.

    How come on Netflix they cut the series from 2003 short, only into one season? Full metal alchemist brotherhood is good, but I would have really liked to see how everything went on after Ed was put in our world and al got his body back in the alchemy world.

    • @crocidile90

      Nicki's extra channel Yes and no.Yes, because it is good and is worth watching. It is slower paced and shows the early years of Ed and Al before they meet rose. The world is just as rich if not more so than brother hood due to the studio given freedom of plot and events i.e. more places in Amestres (even though Brother hood gives you a map).
      No, because you kind of want to watch FMA before Brother hood because the Manga wasn't complete, is its own story, has a completely different ending than Brotherhood and some minor characters are either one or two episodes in "life span" with military characters i.e. Mustang's and Armstrong's people getting more screen time with Rose as the exception.
      Final verdict: If you like FMA:B then you might like FMA. It is a different story is the one thing you have to keep in mind with some minor characters either given an episode while others border line support/main characters with screen time.
      Hope this helps.

    But it still doesn't make any sense that the writers of the original anime had to come up with a different storyline halfway through.
    What's with all that shit that happened regarding the late episodes?
    And Lyra?
    She appeared very early on too.
    There's no way they hadn't already planned this out ... right?

    kinda weird how you didn't even mention the whole parallel to the people of Amestris to the Nazis, i mean when envy took the form of a highlighted blonde haired blue eyed soilder to take the first shot, and how jewish people were compared to rats and how the Ishvalans had red eyes, which i believe one character compared to a rat, i mean just saying it's a huige part to the series that you all tried to mention slightly but while trying to dodge it
