playing metal with jazz pickups. You must be pretty smart
Yeah, thanks for that man.

Find me one jazz player that uses a JB. I'll wait ;)
I didnt know Jeff Beck was jazz artist
@@NickJennison Alex skolnick, he got 2 ltd signature guitars loaded with a JB in the bridge
Not everything has to be "either/or... both companies make great pickups. I have Fluence in my Tele and love SD pickups, especially Pearly Gates, JB and the 59.
I couldn't agree more! Thank you for supporting the channel! This video and all future gear demos are moving to the GT Gear channel: ruclips.net/video/1omQZeOysG8/видео.html
I am very very late to the party, but I've tried the Fishman on a somewhat similar setup as you did (Les Paul custom and high gain metal band), but I've always gone back to the EMG 57/66 set or the Duncans. I can't seem to handle the Fishman sound properly when I play them. They are so precise and crisp when other people play them, but when I do I feel...nothing. And the funny part is that that is exactly what people seem to say about EMG pickups, and yet my sound basically revolves around that compression that EMG gives.
So I ended my own internal debate around pickups : there's no bad pickup, tone is so subjective, it only depends on context and the dude playing them.
Great video though, we can hear the difference for sure!
I appreciate the kind words! Thank you for taking the time to check out my video. I was big on the Fishmans, but these days I'm into Seymour Duncans and Schecter pickups. Like you said, all of these pickups are wonderful!

I seriously doubt 99% of the commenters could tell the difference in a true blindfold test. For my money, the fact that you are getting 3 sets of pickups for ~$250 (Fishman added single coils) is a no-brainer.

@@Mrdude30 Good ear, I used the Tosin Abasi set for the whole EP!
Sort of reminds me of a G&L
MFD pickup when it comes to the degree of note separation
Man it was so close between the two for me. I think I preferred the Fishmans because it sounded like it had a little more clarity but you can definitely tell they used the Jazz and Jb as an inspiration for the Classics. Phenomenal demo. I'm sold on getting the Classics now haha

They both sound very very similar but I think the Fishman’s tracked your picking better. Tighter and more exact. That’s the beauty of active pickups.
I think i like the the jb more for the riffing they just have a more pronounced low end. Im a fishman guy but to me these classics sounded a little tinny for metal I think these are more intended for a classic rock type sound.....the cleans are a different story though...son of a bitch....they are just fucking incredible. Im glad i went with one of these in my neck position.
If you like this, consider checking out my solo EP! li.sten.to/TnIWX1e
But calling this technology “active pickups” is a misnomer. They only have a battery to run the preamp in the circuit. Not to make the coils charged higher like in actual active pups.
@@andrewsanchez4988 I think this "thin metal sound" problem is with all alconico magnet pickups. The palm muted power chords sound weak compared to ceramic. Old school thrash metal guys used JB but nowadays you can get thousand better metal pickups with tight low response in down tuned riffing
@@raakareiska9804 No this thin metal sound is from modern ceramics that designed to roll off the bass to make the sound "tighter" for modern down tuned guitars.

To me the JB has more low end and most importantly for me, more low-mids. More of a "growl" than a "snarl". I do own both, and I like the JB best for the bridge and the Fishman for the neck. Unfortunately not a simple solution to wire up a single guitar with that combination. I will say that the Duncans sound very different in different guitars, whereas the Fishmans are more consistent across different platforms. A JB in an alder or ash guitar is obscenely good, whereas kind of "meh" to my ears in mahogany or basswood guitars.
Great take! I actually like JB in Mahogany guitars haha thanks for watching!

The passive pickups resonance shifts with the cable capacitance that terminates it. A short cable makes them sound shrill, a longer cable makes them sound jazz. The amps input impedance also matters. The most ingenious thing about the fishmans is that they took a PAF and terminated it so that the resonance always is at the same frequency and intensity. Then they use a built in amplifier to make it sound the same regardless whatever you connect to your guitar.
Genius really! If you like this, consider checking out my solo EP! li.sten.to/TnIWX1e

Only one person commented on the fact that with the Fishmans you are getting tons more versatility. I am a huge fan of JB but I just played the classic opens and the tonal possibilities are much more vast with less hum/noise. Great vid by the way.
Thank you so much!

Agreed as a Fishman owner and JB 59 owner I can back that up. Both are excellent pickups but the fishmans have so many voicing options and the "coil split" tones are also really good with the Fishman pups. In coil split mode they still take gain really well. I wired my modern set for inner or outer splits for each coil so I can mix the inner or outer coils on each pup or play them solo if I want(each pickup has a 3 way on off on dpdt toggle to accomplish this since my volume and tone push pulls select for voice one or 2 for each pup. So volume is bridge voice 1 or 2 and tone is neck voice 1 or 2 and l added another 3 way switch for voice 1 low gain. So it's full gain in the middle position low gain for just the neck on one side and low gain for both on the other side. With my tying and gauges I didn't notice a worthwhile difference with the HF tilt option so I just wired that to a slider switch on the control cavity and mounted the switch to the side wall in the cavity so if I want to use that feature on the future I can.). They really do have unreal note separation and way more power. With passive pups more power means less clarity which is why a lot of progressive metal guys are using lower output humbuckers these days like Mark Holcomb. But with fishmans you get both. I dont use 9v batterys with my Fishmans anymore and they are much better in my opinion that way. Instead I use a TRS cable that brings in 9-18v of variable dc power to the guitar on the extra wire and the other 2 are just like any other TS wire. So all I do is plug in and they are powered. Anyways I LOVE the Fishman moderns but it took me at least a year to get used to them. Now I can dial them in for every possible sound I could get with passives without thinking about it but that took time. I had to get my string gauges right etc. Now my amp eq for my passives and Fishmans stays the same but for a long time I had to tweak my amp for each one. Point being the Fishman pups have a learning curve in my opinion but they are everything they claim to be and more. Passives are great and I'll always have passive equipped guitars but if you only have one guitar and need versatility then the fishmans are for sure the way to go. The only downside is that the Fishmans dont react well with vintage fuzz pedals or pedals that dont like having a buffer before them. But the good news is that these days there are tons of fuzz pedals that work just fine with buffers and active pups.

I just replaced my Kiesel Lithiums with the SD Hot Rodded Set and am very happy that you posted this comparison. Many folks have raved about the Fluence as the ideal pickups for the Kiesel Vader, but I just do NOT like the added complexity and battery issues that come with active pups. YES there are slight differences between the Fishmans and Seymour Duncans, but they are very, VERY similar sounding, and both sound AWESOME! To me, the added battery to the rig just isn't worth the slight difference in sound. GREAT job with this! It obviously took significant effort and you have helped a lot of folks here! Funny how a 35 year old designed pickup set is still giving modern pickups active and passive a run for its money.
That's part of the "problem." SD has had 35 years to persuade you they sound great and so you can't come to any comparison "clean" of that bias.
Everything I've seen about Fishman is about how clear the sound is and that's the appeal. Tone is subjective.
Douglas Bell You call it “bias” but is it bias when you can actually explain in detail why you like one over the other? Nope. That’s called an opinion.
Funny how an active pickup made out of PCBs is giving a beloved 35 year old staple of the pickup industry a run for its money.
The fact that these two pickups sound so comparable to each other is a testament to the Classic, not the JB. If you think they’re that close, then Fishman has succeeded in capturing the JBs sound in a single pickup which also produces convincing PAF and single coil sounds.
yea man I have alot of les Paul's an all different sets of pick ups but one of my two black customs with the jb.is still one of my road dogs

Thank you very much for sharing the DI tracks.
When I first listened with my DT 770s, I thought the Fluence Classics were the clear winners. As I've played with the DI tracks using various plugins, I found that if I ran an EQ before the amp and honed in on slight cuts in the lows and mids, I could get the JB to sound incredibly close to the Fluence Classic. This increased the articulation and note separation. The Fluence Classics still seem to layer a bit better together however.
Both pickups sound great in your video and with reamping. Honestly, I think I still would pick the Fluence Classics, but it's much closer now. For the cleans, I think I actually prefer the Jazz.
Again, thanks for sharing and for making an excellent demo. Very helpful. Dig the riffing a lot too.

Now that you have had a couple of years to play the Fluence pickups, what are your thoughts? Do you prefer them to the Seymour Duncans?
I don't really prefer one over the other since I feel like they're so different and suited for different applications. The Fishmans are definitely the next level technology that they claim and if you're looking for pristine signal, then that's the way to go. However, if you're looking to add some color that traditional pickups give you, then I'd go with the Duncans as I've been these days. Both are great! The Fishman seemed to have a little more clarity and I think sounded slightly nicer on most parts except the strummed chorus, where that clarity almost made it too busy. Certainly some very slight differences in the EQ curve of where there's emphasis in the pickups. Both are good pickups though. If I was just going to fix them in with just one voice then I wouldn't bother with the Fishman's, but if you have it set up to switch the three voices of the pickups, then they would add awesome versatility.

They sound fkn identical in the mix...Wait, the clean part at 3:15 I can actually notice a difference. The Fishmans are clearer. Same thing when you play them in isolation, but in the mix they're damned near identical. IDK maybe it's the quality of my desktop speakers, they're not too great, but then again they're probably around the same quality speakers that most average YT viewers have!

The Fluence have the extra voices which is nice. They are not active pups like EMG are active. The battery is to operate the preamp, not to make a stronger magic field around the pup. I’ll take the Fluence all day.

Great review and they both sound great! Fluence obviously has that clarity and response. Looks like when you go to the SD your body language changes a bit. Notice you're picking harder. I noticed that when I A/B sometime
Holy moly Ken Susi commented on my video! You're awesome, bro. Fluences definitely has the clarity hands down. Also, I agree on the picking harder with the SD's. I had to push a little harder to get to where the Fishmans can get you effortlessly. Not to mention I only showed one voice of the Fluences. There's a whole 'nother world to these pickups that I didn't even showcase in this video. Btw Ken, I do a ton of gear demos on my channel and I would love to work with you guys and showcase more Fishman Fluence stuff. If that's something that you're interested in, I'd love to hear from ya. Stay safe out there! contact@gerrytrevino.com
The bridge pups are very similar on single note riffs, but I might enjoy the mid push of the JB more for that. For chords the fishman win hands down due to the wide range nature of the pup and the note separation. Also I think the SD 59 would have been more comparable to the fishman neck than the jazz

I thought that the fish mans were gonna be better but the jb sounds better
agreed
The fishmans seem to be better suited for heavier tones. They're a little dirtier while the JB is more punchy. It's all personal preference to be honest.

I love how they both sound for different reasons. The Fishmans have amazing clarity but almost too much with chords and heavy distortion. Single notes though, holy balls!
The Duncan's have such girth to them. Honestly the Fishman's sound like the Duncan's with a tube screamer up front. I'm willing to bet if you tried the screamer with the jb it would be extremely close. Awesome job

There’s something about the Fluence Classic set that makes me think of the EMG 57/66 set, which is one reason why I enjoy the way it sounds so much.
On the other hand, if you were planning on playing with a passive pickup and still wanted to get some sick Metal tones to compete with an active pickup, the JB is the pickup to use.
Not a bad comparison, and yes the JB is still great after all these years!

Such an awesome comparison. Have the Fluences lasted for you, or have they come and gone? I'm coming back to this as I am reconsidering the Fleunce/Classics after not loving them 2 years ago, but that was more to hating the guitar I had them in. The EQ is obviously quite spot on. On the other hand, the difference in feel of the passives seems noticeable in some cases. It is like there is an added layer of depth and dynamics in the palm mutes. But outside of that I can't tell any other noticeable enough differences. I am going to try out the set of Classics that I still have lying around into my travel/writing guitar for the versatility, but I'll likely be keeping my Bare Knuckle sets in the rest of my collection for that extra bit of mojo for the times that I can really enjoy it. That said, I would go nuts over a Fluence set that has 3 voices that go from the Bare Knuckle Black Dogs and Holy Diver (or Alnico Nail Bomb) then the single coil voice would be the Voice 2 from the Greg Koch P90 set.
Thank you for the kind words! Great question, I actually sort of flip flop between Fishman and Duncan. Currently I have the Seymour Duncan Nazgul & Sentient set in one of my guitars and that's currently my favorite! The newer revisions of the Fishman Fluence Classic set actually have 3 voicing now including a single coil voice, so it might be worth exploring again! I hope that helped, if you liked this, consider checking out my solo EP! bit.ly/3dKJ6Fi

@@GerryTrevino so which set you prefer?
@@ariskoskinas The Fishmans by far!
Gerry Trevino any experience with emg 81 compared to fish man ?
@@ariskoskinas The EMG 81 sounds closer to the Fishman Modern Fluences than the Classics. The Fishman Fluence Modern Humbuckers give you everything you love about active pickups, like the EMG 81, without any of the baggage (i.e. compressed, dull sound).
I actually struggle with this a lot actives do have a an advantage where sonically they sound different than passives. I've tried so many actives and these sound great to me but my personal preference is passives just use to the natural sound i install push pulls and it was perfect for me. I have not been able to get to fully like actives I just like the sound I get with passives and I don't need to change batteries ever. Fishmans are clearer, brighter, more sparkly sounding in clean and distorted tones in this demo. I wonder how is the behaviour of those pickups when it comes to dynamics, which are the weakest point for active pickups. When you hit the strings hard and don't care about dynamics even a pair of EMGs would sound better than most pasive pickups. Versatility is often when active pickups fail

the choice of music crushed any chance to observe distinction or nuance. Fishman's kill any noise.
