Missing the check ball in the primer for the carb and want a cheap replacement? The detent ball in a 1/4 drive socket extension fits and works. I used a cheap extension from an impact extension (1/4 hex to 1/4 square drive) and carefully cut the ball out.
So if it sprays gas out of the little hole in the choke primer, diagram is busted? I have 20hp 1997 engine, big problems when trying to cold start. But when I get its going, it works like charm. I think the previous owner said he had to rebuild the choke primer once before
@chrisp.5755 Sounds like it's only running on 1cyl, low compression, and/or the carb needs to be gone through. I've had issues with reed valves as well. Could be 1 thing, or a combo of many things

Yep, VERY common issue on these motors with the primer diaphragm.
how can you tell the diaphram is shot? Is it just because its spraying out? Mine does the same.
Yep, exactly. If you prime the fuel system and push down on that choke primer, and fuel comes out of that little hole, that primer diaphragm is shot.

Does this engine not have a carburetor cover? I received one of these, used (year 1999) and mine came without it.
Some had them, others didn't
Have the same one cant get it to go more then like 8 mph in a 14-40 jon boat all the other videos of same motor go about 20-26 mph
