Captain Atom is pretty underrated. He deserves to make an appearance in the Gunn-verse. A United States soldier turned into living energy. He even went toe-to-toe with Superman.

(I'm talking about the comics as well.) They made a mistake, in my opinion, by making three different characters with such similar names (Captain Atom, The Atom and Atom-Smasher). They could have done The Atom and Captain Atom were the same person. And that this person's alias was "Captain Atom". "The Atom"...I don't know, it has something "banal", in my opinion.
