FROM TOP TO TOW : the blissful day at sea that turned dodgy #36 (Part 1/2)

- Didn’t see that one coming!
For the first time since we left the dock in Stockholm, we take Polar Seal out for a spin in the bay of Cartagena, just for the sake of having the fun day on the water (oh and also because we want to test our water maker…)
We have an amazing day at anchorage, filled with a home cooked truffle tortilla (recipe at the link below!), making fresh water out of salt water, jumping in the sea, and just generally hanging out with our friend Marky.
Once back in Cartagena, we hop on Marky’s new boat, a Nicholson 35, for a sea trial / sunset cruise and diner. But the evening does NOT end the way we had planned it…
Oh, and should you want to cook a tortilla yourself... here's the full recipe! ryanandsophie.com/the-mean-tr...

I promise we'll release the 2nd part of this episode before next Tuesday, but we really needed to sit done and make an entire video about the tow to get the whole story! Cause there is so much more to it than a tow :) In the meantime, if you'd like to try yourself at tortilla cooking, I've written the recipe on the blog at: ryanandsophie.com/the-mean-truffle-tortilla-recipe/ Bon apétit!
Five years ago we bought a 1965 ALBERG 35 with a deep keel. The prop is in an aperture, so no zinc; instead, a wire is clipped to the shaft and to a zinc that hangs over the side. Our first time out (my wife’s second time sailing), we motored around a bit, I heard a faint clunk but didn’t know it was unusual. What I didn’t know was that I had left the wire attached; it whipped around and took out the drip less seal. After a few hours, we started in to our marina, I went below and discovered there was water over the floor boards. Since the batteries are in the keel, it meant there was water over them. We made it back to the dock, the PO came over and the marina staff helped us get a big pump going, clean up the mess and do a temporary seal. But for a good half an hour, I thought we might sink right in the Inner Harbor of Baltimore, MD. Love your videos, we go to Spain every year (had a trip all set for April that had to be canceled!). I’m subscribed and look forward to them.
Man Marky was so proud of his new boat and to have you go with him out sailing ⛵️ and then so disappointed when the motor won’t start 😟probably needs new batteries and switch off 1 while sailing so it will be ready when he wants to crank his motor👍great day still. That food looked delicious and made me hungry 🤤
Sophie, you're not only very funny and have a force of nature personality, but you, along with your husband, are very good people as well. I really felt for your friend
upon seeing the closeup of his face when his engine wouldn't start. You showed him a great time on Polar Seal and it was clear that he really wanted to return the
favor. The embarrassment and upset on his face was as clear as could be, and I'm speculating that part of the reason was that he felt he let you both down.
Like true friends, you didn't show a hint of impatience of blame, only a desire to support him and help however you could. Ryan was his usual calm and cool and focused
self, and you helped by lightening the mood as much as you could. I couldn't think of a better way to end the video than the way you did--your kind and assuring voice
to your friend as you all were being towed in, that it could have been much worse.
I'm very much looking forward to part two, and so glad that I discovered your channel!
Very well said Terry :)
Damn Sophie...just listening to your accent is enough to make me want to watch your videos. But, you can cook too, and you appear to be a really accomplished, skilled sailor from the little I have seen!
Wow so much in this video. Who remembers the days of Auxiliary yacht engine that could be hand started.? A very famous French competitor in the BOC years ago got his engine started ( with flat batteries) by wrapping the main sheet around the engine flywheel and gybing the mainsail to pull the line hard enough to start it .(It did not happen the first or second or third try .....but he got it done!)
Your Tortilla is like a sort of traditional Spanish Paella I had there in the 1960's( agh!), I'm confused the tortilla I know of is a boring unleavened flat bread , yours is Stunning, I would peel potatoes all day for that! I must check out you other video on it!
Cheers Warren
Jim Nickles . Your welcome , long before Internet days. I used to get daily reports on the boc from a fax back service. I remember reading that report and it took me a while to figure out what he actually did. I hope I never have to do it but good to have a start of an idea if I ever need it! Cheers Warren
Great acting Sophie you really love the water and the chill factor - feel so alive !!. Swim fast enough you will get warm !!!!
I got used to the cold after a few minutes :p
I really enjoy watching the two of you really learning how to sail and be liveaboards. The pacing and style of your videos are great, putting some whimsy and flow into the structure of the information you provide. Very French, but also very friendly and most of all, very fun. Honestly, I look forward to your videos as much as an SV Delos one. Hope that is a compliment to the two of you. Looking forward to where your adventures take you, and how you end up showing them to us.
Aimez la vie de navigation!
Aw! That comment truly warms my heart! :) thanks!!! :)
Oh poor Marky, most of us have been there but I bet he will never be there again, hopefully.... beautiful video!
Nena
Yes, I felt his pain too :(
I am adding Lithium batteries to my travel trailer this summer. My wife will love the option to use blow dryer with out firing up generator. Also the option for the induction cooker. Life is good if the wife is happy.
The lithium batteries and our added solar panels are the best thing ever!!! I absolutely love our ability to use virtually as much power as we want. We can even run the water heater 😍
I love the simple, honest and adventurous life you bring in my living room. Love your videos
Thanks Hans! So glad you enjoy them! :)
I just binge watched all your episodes. Lol. Awesome!! Loved every minute and will continue to watch. Thank you for the smiles!!
Hi Nad! Thanks! :) glad you enjoy our videos! :)
I hope Marky problems are small but enjoyed your video and what awesome music made me feel part of the crew thank you for being my tour guide aroung the MED.
Marky was very, very lucky in this story :) and the problem could have been much worse... more touring of the Med coming soon! :)
Nice expedition...hum, I mean the swin, the colour of the water, the taste of the freshly made drinking water, the juices in the batteries for the hair dryer and...the towin: all in all, a good adventure.//Cheers//
Great video, Sophie! Thanks for sharing.
i cant stop smailing
Way to go Ryan and Sophie!! fresh drinking water a big plus!
Fun video... always love the cooking with Sophie segments.
Thanks! :) I also love the cooking segments, especially when I get to eat the food afterwards 🤩🤩🤩
It's nice you keep filming when things are not working out so well. I can understand at that moment it might be frustrating to have the camera rolling, but its very nice to see;)
Great video guys. perhaps Mikey should invest in Nicky's Honda gen? It's still for sale :-) Heading your way Thursday as today was a blow out. See you soon. Ant & Cid xx
Ah cool! We are in Formantera. Keep us posted and stay safe! Ryan (and sophie)
Cool stuff !!!!!
Well it would not be boating with out a break down or two. Very enjoyable video. GOD bless. JC
Nice edit guys. As another RSA Boykie I can say lucky my cat has 2 engine. Just last weekend one wouldn’t even turn out at sea and I pulled in to the anchorage dropped anchor and found the wire to the starter solenoid had come off. Back on and back to normal.
Oh ! A cook I can see you know what you are doing to create food right ! Good job
Food is life! :D
Loved it! Matt and I are now your biggest fans! Music, cuts, story, everything was great. Keep them coming! #dorksout
Aw! Thanks guys! Means a lot coming from you! :) /Soph
What another great episode guys.... aaaand you got the water maker up and running, that's awesome that you went DIY! As for the other boat, sounds pretty bad to say but I kinda like watching when things go wrong a little so you can learn we can watch and learn. Also it's nice to know that bad things do not only happen to us on a boat :) Can't wait for part 2. Br Chris and Tanja
Glad you liked it! Something going wrong is an opportunity to learn, and this one got Ali’s quite a few. And also, we all have moments like these when things do NOT go as planned! By the way, can’t wait to see the video of your passage on your new boat! :)
Hope you guys are well!
I see a boat cooking show in the making!
That Nicholson 35 is a wonderful boat!
Mike Santis thanks Mike, apart from a few expected teething problems, she’s an absolute powerhouse of a boat 😎🙌🏻⛵️
@@PharSideUK all old boats have their share of problems. But they have beautiful lines, style, charm and last but not least, they are solid. Mine is from 1978 and I wouldn't upgrade for a newer one!
Are you sure you don't have a sister?! Classic!
😂
@@RyanSophieSailing What about a cousin ? !!!
The comforts of home....Power is a wonderful thing ...!
Oh yes the comfort level that we reached is... invaluable! :)
Another fun episode. Renewable energy is my game, so nice to see you choosing free energy.
Markie sounds South African. Please say "Howsit bru" or "Aweh brah" or "Howsit my China", from Andy in Durban, South Africa!
We'll done on the water maker!
I'm just starting your channel, going through your vids from the start, so i know I'm about 4 years behind 😜, but if I was in that position, I would've used a house battery to jump start it, it would've been a pain, but at least if you're in place where you can't get a tow, that's something you could do if you're ever in that position again
haha never mind ..... just watched the next video where you said the house batteries were also flat....
Looks like you're ready for the second membrane!
Garlic should be sliced, lol, the pressing causes the garlic to taste more acidic.
Truffel OD Sophie? Looks yummy!
I knew Ryan was filming when Sophie was using hairdryer, I got a laugh there.. 50A wow!!!
😏😂
Feel so bad for Marky been there done that and not fun. Better to know now than later though
Agreed! Better earlier than later, and also... better now with crew onboard than alone! (Marky single-hands his boat normally)
Since the boat has a manual transmission try a push start. Evey body off the boat and swim swim swim!
Hahaha! You’re welcome to come over and help us do that ;)
Hello Sophie and Ryan
I like watching your videos. I'm having a boat in Adriatic sea and spending every summer there.
In this episode you're cooking a nice dish, but I'm wondering how you guys powering the induction stove while being on anchor. Does your boat have a generator?. I use my coffe pad machine in the morning very carefully from battery/inverter power but not considering using the induction cooker outside the marina.
Hello Skipper Horst. Thanks for the question. Between our Solar setup (on a sunny day we put in about 30 to 40 amps a hour), our Lithium batteries and our 3000 watt inverter. That is how we are running the induction. you still have to watch consumption and plan your energy needs but it does work. We have been at anchor for 8 or 9 days. I dont even have our house bank connected to the alternator right now. - Ryan (the key is the lithium bank and the solar)
That's the sound you never want to hear when trying to start your engine up. Lucky it happened then and not when he was days away from any help.
The amount of luck we had that night is almost immeasurable... many lessons learned that day!
Ah if you go to sea you must have a contingency...... if something breaks think how can I fix it.. tough love a sailing boat ... but love them we do
Good film
Food looks yummy... BTW, I understand the trials and tribulations of leak checks... hate the thought of doing them and replacing gaskets and hoses.... 👍🙂 lead acid batteries as a colleague once told me works great as long as they are in constant use in cars but let them sit for a few months and all bets are off.
Oh yeah, we really need to get those leaks under control... but we knew they’d be there, so we’re not bummed out :)
Really enjoyed that. In the episode (Ryan's Tech Corner #3) when you explained about how a water maker worked etc, you said that there would be a part 2 on actually installing it. Is that one still planned?
Absolutely! We just want to be perfectly on point with our own installation before making the video. The installation is complete, we just want to use the watermaker a few times and see how it performs before we sit down and make the installation video :) it will come soon!
@@RyanSophieSailingGreat! Looking forward to it!
If you put the tortilla under the broiler after cooking the first side, it will cook the top and you don't have to flip it. Still, yours looked fantastic. I could almost smell it. I was definitely drooling!! ;-)
Ha! That’s smart.... I hadn’t thought about that! (It was sooo good 🤤)
you guys using a boer tas a guinea pig? to taste the water? lol enjoyed this video
Hello to marky from Wimbledon. Say hi from bruno
I saw the news story on Racers in France that nearly died in freak snow storm this last weekend.
Weather has been temperamental!
Yes, we heard that it’s been the worst spring in Spain is years! But it seems to be stabilizing now :)
Yes, we heard that it’s been the worst spring in Spain is years! But it seems to be stabilizing now :)
I'm curious about the stove. It uses a ton of electricity... what is the main advantage to it? My guess is heat generation. Meaning, there is none generated so the cabin stays cooler. That's not insignificant (to me) but I'm curious about how you find it or why you use it. Thanks for the videos.
Hi Terence, The main issue is gas itself. Even in different countries in Europe it can be hard to find gas if you run out. There are also some safety advantages to not have a gas system as you smash through the seas. Ryan
Hey, could you pls share your setup for the second tap you have - is that a separate tank just for drinking water made by the watermaker? How many litres is the tank and is it on a separate pump? Thx
Hi Zeki, Its confusing but we have three taps. One is from the fresh water tanks and is unfiltered (used for cleaning, etc). The second is a tap from the freshwater tank that is filtered and we use for drinking. The third tap is from the water maker and is for testing before i feed the water in to the tanks.
Our fresh water holding tanks hold around 300liters of water. (there are actually two separate tanks). Yes, there is a house pump which pumps that water to different sources throughout the boat.
@@RyanSophieSailing thanks! nice, sounds like a good setup, I will try to do the same - can you tell me what type of filter you have installed for the drinking water tap? And are you saying you have just 1 pump for all the taps? fair winds!
Hi zeki. For our drinking water tap the filter is a charcoal filter. I have this under the sink and has two purposes. The first is for fresh drinking water and the second is that i branched a line off of it and it acts as a fresh water flush for the watermaker.... before you fresh water flush you need to filter the water. There is one pump for the house water tap and drinking water tap. The third tap comes directly from the watermaker as a test valve and is pumped by the watermaker itself. Ryan
Is it possible that your alternator isn't putting out enough juice, yet your battery to battery charger is pulling more amps than are being put back into the starter battery??????
So I guess the motor is too big for a hand crank. Did you try push starting?
I know that feeling. My little Bukh diesel failed as I was going to take my friend sailing. Luckily my boat is only 30 foot long so I was able to sail in and out of the pen and still take him for a sail. Sadly my diesel is totally stuffed and I have to get a new motor.
Oh no :( sorry to hear about your engine!
I’m sure Marky will find his own version of a Sophie as he sails around the world. Also, I’m no culinary expert, but are you sure you translated the name of that recipe correctly? Out here in California, at least, a tortilla usually refers to a flat, round piece of bread.
Peter Kacandes tortilla, “little torta,” means omelette in Spain and flatbread in Mexico and Central America.
It called a “tortilla de patata” here in Spain, but everyone refers to it as “tortilla”. Our boat is filled with the tortillas you describe, for delicious burrito nights :)
In the states we sometimes also know it as tortilla Española. Yummy by any name.
A tortilla is something radically different in the western hemisphere. Oddly enough, of Spanish origin though!
I think they are in Spain now, that will put them in the western hemisphere already.
Are you from Iowa? Nice T-shirt. Go Hawks!!!!
Yes mike! des moines. Ryan... im a hawks fan though i went to a different college.
Sweet. I student taught at West Des Moines Valley and now teaching and coaching in Bettendorf. Good channel, keep it up.
Ah... i went to valley... a few years ago😉. Sophie and i still go back to des.moines as family is there... in fact, sophie has even seen the inside of valley.
Golden rule: Use only house bank for house bank use; starting bank for engine only. Ensure you have confidence in your starting bank by running engine every hour, then every 2, etc. and checking charge rates. Don't run heavy loads until you have confidence in the capacity of _all_ batteries to keep you going. Lithium batteries aren't the cure. Good housekeeping is :-) Keep on keeping on!
Good one!
We like your friend… South African ? … good egg.
Tortilla? I thought tortillas were flat breads or wraps. What you made with eggs, onions and potatoes (and other ingredients, usually cheese and onions but you put truffle oil which sounds yummy) looks to me like a frittata.
So apparently, there is a difference between frittatas and tortillas... the frittatas finish to cook in the oven while the tortillas gets flipped in the pan. At least that’s what google said 😅
Emily BH I was confused too and thought it might be a Paella but was corrected on Patreon "Paella: rice, vegetables, meat
Tortilla: potatoes, onions, eggs' Also I found this on Quora which sounds right. 'A tortilla francesa is this: And a tortilla de patatas is this: Basically, in Spain, when we say tortilla, we're referring to an omelette. The difference is, the word tortilla means omelette in Spain, while in Mexico it refers to a type of flat bread (which I'm sure you all know).' Cheers Warren
@@CheersWarren I guess it is one of those words with lots of different meanings of which the Spanish language has MANY.
Was it not possible to switch to from house to Starter battery?
Or combine both batteries ?
Ahh.. I see. All House and Starter Batteries were already connected via the switch and all were dead.
@@thomaschandler7820 Yes, I saw that on Part 2 of the saga when I watched it on Sunday night ! No other options :(
TDS... lol.. best water ever... :)
Hahaha! Hmmm TDS or TSD....? ;)
Oh, I thought I read somewhere that, if you use the water from a watermaker for long periods of time, you need to take mineral supplements? It takes out something that you need and get from normal tap water. Calcium maybe? I don't know. Just thought I'd mention it as it seemed like something that could cause health problems down the road. I think, maybe, perhaps?
Hi Terence, There seems to be some conflicting information on this. It does not remove 100% of everything but my personal view is that adding remineralization to the system cant hurt. Ill most likely do this at the end of the season, a bit tired with projects right now. Ryan
Quite suprised to see a british electric plug and socket on your boat
Our boat was commissioned by a couple in the UK, we are her second owners :)
Sophie, this was something I was wondering for a while - how do you cope with Ryan using gallons, feets, inches, ounces and all this stupid stuff, being raised in the metric system ? :D I kind of understand that one can get accustomed to using nautical miles and knots for marine movement as one does not have a real point of reference from before sailing, but for "how much water our watermaker will make" ? or "'miles per gallon" for fuel consumption ?
I'm (ryan) going to respond to this one. I'm actually very verse to the metric system living in Europe for 10 years. So we primary only use metric when talking. The only except to this is if we have a device which has gallons on it, for example our watermaker. But you really dont need to understand the units just the idea of what is normal and not. In that case i also convert it and we discusses it in both units. Ryan
@@RyanSophieSailing oh, I see, so if you would have gauge scaled in liters you would say litters ? but then why did you buy gauge scaled in gallons ? I think it has to be confusing when you have some gauges in metric and some in imperial (and I assume that a french boat made for EU market has most gauges in metric).
I mean I can't relate really as I never got comfortable with imperial system and I have to do conversions on calculator whenever I hear that a car is doing something mpg and I want to figure out l/100km.
Marky its all good, nothing a stack of green won't fix.
Ryan contrats on the awesome water maker...
Now for the important stuff,
Some of us are sitting here lusting for Sophies tortilla dish.
I really feel Sophies cooking deserve more screen time, and it would be perfect cool if she included maybe step by step instructions on the screen for that matter..
I mean, lets get real, nice boat, Ryan pilot, engineer and all. all good, but get over ya self.. Sophies cooking is where its at.
Maybe the core of this show need to be Sophie cooking her way around the world, thinking up brilliant dishes, making vine selection recommendations as she goes.. those less fortunate among us, can then cook along at home and enjoy the show over a spectacular Sophie dinner...
Just saying.
Rant over - I will go back to my slide-ruler and compass now.
Oh, my but the French can cook :)
Poor Marky
He did not have a great time for a moment (it changed though ;))
2:53 is not M/Y A. I can't see which one it is but it's not A. A is white.
