- You own a floating bridge guitar but don´t know how to set up the floating tremolo? I show you how to set up a floyd rose bridge, ibanez edge & ibanez edge zero 2 bridge. You will learn how to adjust the floating guitar tremolo and the difference between floyd rose and ibanez edge bridge.
Don´t be afraid of a floating bridge guitar because the setup is not difficult.
Here are the 3 different guitars I used:
- Ibanez RG550-RF Genesis with ibanez edge bridge
- Ibanez RG 1XVV-FPK with ibanez edge zero 2 bridge and zp3 system
- Charvel San Dimas 2016 with floyd rose bridge
Setting up a floating bridge guitar should be done carefully!

Hope you didn't use all of the information that was given, it's only partially correct. Don't ever angle an edge zero 2 parallel with the body, just asking for intonation problems if you do. And don't just use cardboard on your guitar unless you like micro scratches.

Optimal setup for the edge zero bridge is not like a lot of people understand though, it's actually supposed to be setup parallel with the body, and your guitar will play much easier, optimal intonation, and lower action.

Yo buddy I just got an Ibanez guitar. I tried to tune it and it kept slipping half a step. Even after locking the nut, still slipped. Luckily I found some adjustment bolt on the bottom and tightened it up and now it's staying in tune but I got to figure out everything I can about this system that's why I'm here!

Good job. I actually have the same guitars. Three Ibanez's and one Charvel. Just different models and colors. I agree to many people are afraid of the locking nut bridge system. Saying it is not stable or to hard to work with. I have been playing since the late 70's and it is all I have ever owned. I love them You are right it is just bull crap. Good job. Good videos. I recommend to everyone that has an Edge zero 2 tremolo to setup level with the guitar body, this is indeed the optimal way compared to the way you're probably told, just like me, I found out on accident. Then looked on Google, and found out it's the optimal way to setup the edge zero 2 tremolo.

Thanks for you detailed video. I recently bought RG550 Genesis with Edge trem. It is not clear in the manual that to adjust the height of the bridge (to lower the action in my case) the inner stud screw has to be tightened or loosened. I believe clockwise it tightens.
Awesome and congrats! What color did you buy? You´ll find a video about trussrod adjustment on my channel. I hope it will help you to find out which direction will lower the string height.

Finally, went with the yellow one as the red one has a slight issue of volume with the 1st string. Now that I bought it, I like the yellow better 😁. Will check out your video. Thanks.

Basically I like your video, and also taking a look at these 3 bridges is a great idea! But there are a couple very important points missing here. This way it the info you provide is only partial info, and for beginners it may not be good enough for setting up a guitar. And advanced players know all this (and more). Also please don't use a cardboard piece on a beatiful brand new finish like this 550 Genesis has. Go look at the finish in the light, will be microscratched thanks to that cardboard.
When you are setting up a guitar, even before you start any of the stuff you mention, you must start with checking if the neck is dead straight.
1. Adjusting the neck so that is straight
2. Adjusting the springs to get the bridge in level. It also has to be mentioned that it's worthing doing it in steps. Adjust the springs a bit, then TUNE THE GUITAR, adjust again, tune the guitar, and so on. You show the Edge at 2:33 -> that's not parallel I'm sure, the saddle screws shouldn't lean back that much. I have the very same guitar.
3. If you have a straight neck and a right level trem already -> time to adjust the action. Again, in steps. LOOSEN THE STRINGS FIRST -> then adjust action, and then tune, and check. Then loosen the strings and adjust action, then tune again. Without loosing the strings you must not adjust the action, because it puts an excessive force on the trem posts.
4. Yes, last step is adjusting the intonation
thank you for your wise words. You´re right - the problem is that I can´t pack all that content into a video with 3 different bridges...it would be a 1h video (my computer would not be able to produce it :)
that´s why I shared restringing videos as well. It´s not easy to be a youtuber and share 1 video per week and that´s why I don´t speak about truss rods in this video - that could be a further video.
Adjusting the tremolo before restringing is good but only if you use the same kind of strings again.
It´s true that it is necessary to loosen the strings before you adjust the action - I forgot that in this video.
Maybe my guitars don´t look perfect but they feel perfect for me - setting up is personal preference.
I really don´t care much about the finish of my guitars because they are working horses and I don´t own them for reselling.

I recently bought a new guitar with the Edge Zero II tremolo. The owner's manual says the bar should be parallel to the top of the body (string path), which results in the top of the bridge plate angled upward about 15 degrees. I noticed that the top of the bridge plate on yours is parallel to the top of the body, resulting in the arm being angled farther upward, which feels weird to me as I am used to the Floyd Rose system. Which bridge angle is correct?
If it feels weird for you you should adjust it until it feels good. There is no 100% right or wrong. Simply make sure that all the strings are ringing on each frets without a lot of buzzing. Some bridge angles allow lower string height and you need to experiment with it until you find your sweet spot. I dont feel a lot of difference between the floyd rose and the edge bridge
Nooo! Man the edge zero 2 isn't supposed to be angled with the body, and you can't just find what's comfortable, or else you'll have more intonation problems than you know what to do with. Angle you're trem like you see pictures of, not parallel to the body.

Not quite. The EZ2 User Manual says "To maximize performance, set the tremolo so that it is approximately parallel to the surface of the guitar body". So, having the baseplate parallel to the body is correct. The tops of the saddles and (especially) the fine tuners should be leaning forward

I have a question though. I'm willing to get an RG with Edge-Zero II system. From your experience, is its tuning stability on par with the original Edge and OFR bridges, or is it different?
Tuning stability is impacted by so many factors...Humidity, care and storage of the guitar, how often you fine tune, your playing style and the strings of course. When the ibanez bridges are set very good the systems are perfect and absolutely stabil. Sorry for not giving a specific yes or no
All my strings are slightly flat and I mean slightly. If I turn the tension knob at the back of my zero will I get the few cents sharp Ii need across all six strings?

How do I manage to adjust my spring tension,before I play about with anything I'd like to ask your advise how to do this please,I'm new to the edge 2 tremelo floating bridge mines seems abit high it's not looking parallel in playing position looks like its needs losing the spring tension,sorry if I'm sounding stupid haha I just would like to ask your advice mate
sorry for answering as late but I was on vacation. you can adjust the spring tension with a screw driver in the back of the body. to higher the tension you need to screw in a bit. a lot of people recommend to downtune the strings first to not crack the strings. maybe my other videos will help you as well!

I have my edge zero 2 set almost level with the body kinda like the Floyd Rose on my Ibanez s1070pbz, and it plays optimal compared to the way I was instructed to. And the intonation is perfect! It was good before, but a tad off, hardly enough to notice unless you listen closely, but it's spot on now, and the action is a little lower. I'm gonna try it like this for a few days, does anyone else use the same setup or know if I should change it?
Everything that works and sounds perfect is great! If the intonation is good don´t change it :)
@@austrianpickingpower Yep, I went and changed my rg6pfgmltd Ibanez to the same setup (as I've had both of my guitars setup as instructed) . Both had as your probably familiar with, the edge zero bridge you see in guitar center, or someplace always have the rear of end of the edge tremolo is set up higher than where the studs are of the tremolo, I literally walked in my room, started playing my guitar, and as I was playing it, I noticed how it played even easier than normal setup, and I looked down and it was set level almost, no lie! So I adjusted it a bit, and leveled it out, and now no intonation problems at all!!! And plays even more like butter.
WoW, Cool man! I have a question about ibanez edge bridge. I set up the system parallel to my guitar, but I noticed that side where we insert the tremolo arm is lower than the opposite side (not parallel to the guitar, a little deeper). Is it okay or they should be on one height?
Yesss that´s good because the upper strings are thicker and need more distance to the fretboard than the high e- or b-string. Sounds good for me

My Ibanez guitar keeps going out of tune everytime I tune it. I'll tune it all the strings sequencially but immediately I tune the last string the previous ones get untuned. Please advice.
Yah that´s a common thing with floating bridges. You have to repeat that process until it is well balanced. There must be a sweet spot where each string is tuned well. I have two videos about changing strings. Maybe they can help you!

Hightening or lowering the bridge under tension is a big no-no

I have an Ibanez rg350dx I'm trying to raise the bridge tremolo!! But there's a allen inside of the bigger Allen bolt!! What size is that little Allen?? I need to loosen it before I can raise my bridge up!!🥴 Does anybody know?? Thank you so much I appreciate it!!😊
Normally you´ll need a 2mm hex key. If you´re using the ibanez tool you´ll have the right one on board. I hope that helped

Very unclear at 8:50. If you want to lower the action, you need to UNLOCK the outer 3mm bolt by loosening the inner 2mm bolt. If you want to raise the action, the 2mm bolt doesn't need to be be loosened. It needs to be tightened when you completed raising your bridge, locking the 3mm bolt.
You´re absolutely right! I didn´t want to explain that very detailed because loosening the inner screws is never wrong. This way it is less specific but good for any newcomer. Thank you for your comment!

What's up with that bit at the end? If something works perfect for you, it doesn't mean it'll be perfect for everyone else. I'm no hater, but anyone's gonna have a real hard time going from drop C to C or B standard to an open C in a pinch with a floating trem guitar unless you've done a couple of mods. Of course intonation won't be spotless if you do that with a fixed bridge guitar instead and the drop C and open C will have the plain strings quite tense, but you'll get through a couple of songs with each tuning no problem. Personally I've never had any experience with an Edge Zero bridge and I was expected something more complex and feature-rich. Good video though!
BtW I recommend you change your strings more frequently than once every half a year. Huehue
thank you for your honest review! You´re right: it works for me since I never downtune my guitar so far. A video with 3 bridge setups can´t contain all the tiny details and it should be more like a guide what steps you need to take. Since I play a few guitars the strings last a bit longer.
@@austrianpickingpower I get you - it's so hot where I live , I always clean my guitars after playing, which unfortunately isn't that often and the strings happen to last even longer, lol. I've got 3 guitars with floyd and I feel it's a crime when 2 of them have the same tuning. I think your comment at the end was towards beginners and I like how encouraging it is, but people starting to learn guitar can be easily overwhelmed and dealing with this bridge system isn't helping. I remember Floyd Rose gave me a hard time 15 years ago with my first guitar and I had been reading forums and watching videos back then, too.

You should NEVER, EVER adjust/turn the string posts with string tension on.

Disagree. Obviously you need to set the Trem height approximately without string tension but it is absolutely fine to make small adjustments under tension. The rotaional forces will be far less severe on the posts/knife edges than that from vigourous whammy Bar use.
I've owned some of my Double Locking Trem guitars for over 20 years and have been setting them up like this with absolutely no issues.
It's another of those 'myths' (like needing to detune guitars before shipping them) that divides opinion. Each to their own...

Everybody who is doing this; always says EXACTLY the same thing: Been doin' that for long time -no problems; bla-bla... But EVERYTIME You meet theese guys 'who swears' by turning with string tension on -on the road: It's ALWAYS the same thing: Their shit DO NOT stay in tune quite as good as they think. ESPECIALLY in hands of some one who knows what to look for. Good tuning -and tuning stability is truely an art. To master it comes down to so much more than just; -turning on the keys, -intonation and set up -on a string instrument. It has to do with much more that that. And one needs to spend time on the road -and in a REAL studio (home computer doesn't count here) to; get the nessesary experience, learn and realize theese things.
I'm both a player -and a workin' tech. Been doin' it for +30 years. As in getting payed by professional musicans and other people in the 'biz' for keeping their instruments in tune. For me to be able to this: -Blowing hot steam out of my mouth doesn't even cut it coming out of the gate here. I really need to know what i'm feakin' doin'.
If You say You had no problems adjusting Your Floyds for 20 years with string tension on: -Fine. You are not the first -nor the last player to claim this. This is the most common missunderstanding regarding; Floyd and Strat trems. This to a degree; that even many professionals and manufacturors have got it wrong. Just here on YT 8 out of 10 'how to set up Your Floyd Rose' are doin' what You're doin'. Basicly showing unaware players to fuck up their instruments with a smile??!! This is just so beyond fuckin' wrong. There is a BIG DIFFERENCE in people calling themselves a Tech -to accually beeing a solid one.
To prove this point: (Warning this will damage Your trem system!)
- Mount a new Floyd post (any qouality -or brand you like).
- Turn/adjust the post with string and spring tension on.
- Check the post groove -AND the contact knife edge on the tremplate.
This IS what You will find:
- The groove on the post has gotten a scar -and knife edge on the tremplate isn't as sharp anymore. It has become dull in the contact surface against the post.
Ask Your self: Should it really be like this? Shouldn't a qouality locking tremsystem be able to handle adjustments like this? The answer is now clearly in front of Your own eyes. Many think that they get away with this -cause the guitar still stays in tune. But does it really when it comes down to 'real business'...? The main reason most people choose a guitar -or install a Floyd Rose -unit in their guitar; is to be able to use the trem and still stay in tune. THIS WITHOUT fine tuning all the time. The ENTIRE POINT with the system -is to have it return back exactly and precisely to the same floating position after using the bar lightly or hard. With scared posts and dull knife edges the systems doesn't do this. Many like to think that it does; but it doesn't. THIS my friends is the myth!
Floyd Rose the most worst floating system in the world.
