** Correction: In the video I state that Knightlore was the first isometric game. While it did help to popularize the isometric genre it was not the first. There were a few others like Blue Max that came out for home consoles in 1983, while Knightlore was released in 1984 **

I'm currently writing a book covering the British game industry from it's start to modern day. I use various British gaming companies to tell a really interesting and interweaving story covering almost 40 years of British gaming history.
This video has been a big help, I'll be sure to give you a thanks when it's finished.
I've only just discovered your channel. I'm very impressed with how professional and well presented your content is. Although a lot of the subjects have been covered by other RUclipsrs previously, your insight and style makes them still feel fresh and relevant, as well as some new footage or information scattered in. Hope you keep it up!! - WACK (to the kerb)!!
+Iain Dalby Thanks so much, appreciate it!
Iain Dalby I agree
+nicholas Thanks!
Great video. I remember getting that VHS tape in the mail and watching it just about non-stop.
Thanks a lot! I did the same with my copy. I remember disowning my mom for about 3 days after she accidentally threw my Donkey Kong Exposed tape out. It's crazy that the guy hosting it ended up being a regular on the Chelsea Handler show for a while. I got a copy of it though and plan to use some clips in part 2, which should be up Monday... Tuesday at the latest.
Love the story! It's nice to know who these guys were behind such a legendary game developer... I have alot of great childhood memories playing their stuff
I still have that DKC VHS tape! But no VHS player to watch it over again. What a nostalgia trip. Thanks for the video.
+Sound Hound I still have the tape too. But also no vhs player lol. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.
Thanks for this great video series on Rareware, fantastic editing also!!
+EARTHLORE64 Thanks a lot! Really appreciate that. It was time consuming but a lot of fun to make.
Nooooo, you said Zee X, we were so close to getting it right for everyone!!!
Lol I know. This video series will forever haunt me for that.
*Zed* *X* *Spectrum* 🤓
Both of your channels rock!
Keep up the great work. 👍✨
I subbed. I'm on this video game history kick lately. I don't even play them anymore really, I just love the nostalgia.
+joseph fiorini thanks for checking the channel out man!
Man, this is good stuff. Keep up the great videos. I love that 90s commercial. WTF were we all thinking back then??
+Aaron Johnsen thanks man! Yeah, some of those 90s commercials are so cringey but I love watching them.
your video topics and way you explain and go about them are great, keep them coming! Nostalgic as hell!!
+b B Thanks! Glad you're digging the videos. Next one will be on the Atari Jaguar. It should be out in a week or two...probably lol.
Awesome video man, looking forward to part 2.
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it. I'm just taking a break from editing part 2 right now and hope to have it up Sunday or Monday. The rest of their history covers quite a bit of ground, their more interesting stuff in my opinion, so I think it'll probably end up being three parts total. Thanks again!
4:55 That Wizards and Warriors cover is burned into my sub-conscious! Thanks for the nostalgia!
Reslly enjoyed this and Rare has been a standout for me since I was a kid playing Banjo Kazooie.
Really informative video man. Never knew that much about Rare before the Super Nintendo days, looking forward to part 2!
Thanks so much. Really appreciate it. I was pretty much int he same boat. I didn't really start to notice Rare until I started reading about Donkey Kong Country. Mind you my 2nd NES game was Slalom and one of my favorites was Battletoads. Both Rare games. You'd think I would've noticed them before the SNES! The second part should be up by Monday, Tuesday at the latest. Thanks again!
Al Snow is a wrestling God.
Your gaming docos are really well done, look forward to more!
Your channel is awesome dude.
+SonicSP thanks!
You do some of the greatest work I’ve ever seen on RUclips man, this series is the last few videos on your channel I’m about to finish, I could binge on some more if you had
Thanks! Definitely have more videos to come. These just take a little while to put together. I'll probably have a video out next weekend.
Just wanted to say that I discovered one of your videos couple days ago and I AM HOOKED! Great content and reallllly well done, sir! Keep up the great work and I hope your channel continues to grow!
+Will C thanks for taking the time to check the channel out. I really appreciate it!
great documentary. I got say your channel is best seen so far for documentaries about games and game consoles. Keep up the nice work
+Martin Rowlands thanks so much, really appreciate it!
Welcome buddy
You produce amazing quality content, you deserve a much bigger viewership
Thanks!
DK COUNTRY was a wonderful game. I absolutely love it. I gunned for that 100% forever on it.
I just came across your videos!
Your videos are very informative! :)
+Liquid Sun thanks! Glad you like them.
Awesome videos man. I'm glad I found your channel.
+Taylor Martin Thanks a lot. Really appreciate it!
Nothing but greatness. Thanks for the video.
+Aaron Bramall Thanks again. These are actually my first few videos. Man, if I could go back I'd change some things presentation-wise. I think you'll see the more recent ones are far more polished, especially from an editing standpoint. Thanks again for stopping by.
great videos man! keep em coming
+dron manclia Thanks! I appreciate the feedback. After the day I've had this was awesome to read. I post a new gaming documentary video every 1-2 weeks so I've plenty more coming.
Just found out about your channel from Game Dave. Awesome awesome content, your channel is so underrated. Wrestling/gaming? An amazing combo. Subscribed for life.
your documentaries are very good, just the right length :)
Thanks! You may change your mind when you get to the much longer recent ones though lol
I did not know they made Anticipation. One of my fav party games back in the day
never knew they made NARC. I loved that game. great video as always
I remember that logo!
I alsobremember spending a long time play DK for super nintendo!
Not half bad dude! Subscribed and turned on the notifications. Stoked for more!
Stadium ARTs for some reason I JUST got a notification for this comment lol.
Yeah, I saw a notification for this in my e-mail just now... weird. A bit old haha. Better late than never though I suppose :P.
I got the Rare tape in the mail! it came in packaging that a print all over that was the jungle tree tops from dk country. At the end the camera man barges in to a room of them testing killer instinct.
+Andrew Harris yeah man! I still have mine. It's pretty awesome
I love your channel dude. I was a huge fan of rare back in the day and this video took me from 32 years old to 6. Please do more vids!
+Andrew Harris thanks man, I appreciate it. I definitely have a lot more videos to make. I'm actually posting my newest video tomorrow
I remember those Nintendo power vhs. Loved rare but Diddy Kong racing blew my mind
You are so gonna help me get through this graveyard shift. Much thanks!
Glad to hear it! Hopefully youtube works ok for you. Apparently a lot of people have been having issues with getting videos to playback tonight.
Yahel Is Wrestling With Gaming oh yeah I'm in LA, and videos have been fucking up since about 1pm this Sunday 2-12-17 - bullshit - hahaha means I gotta save these offline!
lol damn man. I'm in florida so I assumed it was an east coast thing. I guess youtube is all kinds of messed up. It's been working for me for the last hour or so though so maybe they got their shit together now.
Tickles me when Americans call the ZX Spectrum the 'Zee Ex' instead of 'Zed Ex'. I know it's just a cross-atlantic thing - but it's like us Brits calling the band ZZ Top - 'Zed Zed Top'.
Cobra triangle was my first, and it's still a fun game
Great video, as always! Thank you!
Thanks!
famicom / not famicon... Sounds weird. Otherwise, top notch stuff, loving it!
Agreed
Really like your stuff...
+Conor Lavin thanks!
I like your channel so far!! You plan on doing wrestling and this at the same time?? That might be a cool/unique little brand for yourself if so. Good luck!!
+Drew Cline Thanks! I'm still wresting here and there but very sporadically. After doing it for nearly 9 years this will probably be my last year.
Great video, good work :)
I didn't expect you to look like danzig for some reason. 😂 Great documentaries dude! 👌
I haven't gotten Danzig yet. Sadly I'm not much taller than him. Thanks for checking the videos out man!
Wrestling With Gaming ha ha just messing. Keep up the good work. 🖒
+Craig Davies thanks man. And no worries, I cracked up when I read the Danzig comment lol
I still have my free Wii strap that I got for preordering Battletoads for Wii.
My brother has that video for Donkey Kong and was stoked for a LONG time before release.
He also had the CD that came with the game, with Songs like Creep: Radio head and Everything is Cool:Pop will eat itself. Was that just realised in the UK?
Good content. BINGE WATCHING
+MikeOTR thanks man! Glad you're digging it
+MikeOTR oh man, just realized you're watching one of my older videos. I think you'll find the more recent ones far more polished.
"Knightlore was the first 3D isometric game in history" - not even close. Zaxxon came out almost three years prior to Knightlore. Then followed Q*Bert, Congo Bongo and Marble Madness. Even on home computers, Blue Max for the Atari 8-bit and Ant Attack for the ZX Spectrum pre-date Knight Lore, both releasing in 1983.
Knightlore was revolutionary at the time for a number of reasons. However it wasn't the first isometric game by a long shot.
+Richard Heasman Good catch! you're right, i should've said one of. I believe blue max was released in 1983, almost a year before knightlore. It did help to popularize the style but that doesn't change the space-time continuum lol. I'm adding a correction to the video's description. Again, thanks for catching that.
No worries! Really enjoyed the video. Sorry to be pedantic :)
+Richard Heasman No need to apologize. I'm glad you enjoyed it and I'm really glad you caught the error. I strive to be as accurate as possible with these and feel like an idiot for not catching it.
Thumbs up for NJPW shirt :)
Carlito Benito Al Snow is in NJPW now.
@@elikanoai1954 Leif Cassidy... lol.
Thank you for this video 👍
Around 3:00, It sounds like you kept saying FamicoN, with an N. Am I mishearing?
+Sound Hound nope, you're not hearing things. It's an old habit and unfortunately there are a few times in the video that I say famicoN instead of FamicoM. I blame it on English being my second language lol
You should do a video on the company working designs
Great video and presentation, but are you saying Famicon?
off the bat solid channel in my ball park area nice
Damn, Omar Isuf knows his games.
Your New Japan shirt is dope.
+Chef Mo thanks!
Am I the only one who don't find it admirable to work "18 hours a day, seven days a week"? I realize that it might be necessary to get ahead but I never could understand why so many people look UP to that kind of life as if it was a goal in and of itself. Working those hours for any length of time will pretty much kill you. And while I understand passion there ARE other things in life.
Tony McModeNut I honestly don't know why their employees would work those hellish hours. Unless they were paid well and had great benefits, it's not worth it.
Because of pride and sense of community. If you don’t want that, I hope you never start your own company
As recent events have shown, pride and Sense of community means little if you still lose your job or have your studio shut down by higher ups
When you start a business, that's what you do to make it a success.
I'm pretty sure the Stamper brothers have made up for all that time they spent making Ultimate and Rare a staggering success with all the millions up on millions they've made since. Pretty sure they have so much free time now (and have done for years) that the hours spent working originally are meaningless.
They've probably done collectively far fewer working hours than your average worker does in their entire life.
Can you please make a video about Apogee Software?
+Christian Cerna The Apogee logo always takes me back to my childhood. 😊
It's on my very long list of things to cover. I'm not sure when I'll get to it but I will at some point. The next video is going to be on the Atari Jaguar. I was able to get some input on it from Leonard Tramiel and am getting some assistance from a gentleman that works for Retro Gamer magazine with research verification. All of that has made the video take longer to complete bit I think it'll be well worth it. Thanks again for checking the channel out. I truly appreciate it.
Thank you so much for responding. I agree. Apogee was my introduction to PC gaming. I didn't know much about computers back then, but learned simple DOS commands in order to play their games. I still remember going into Radio Shack and buying a CD that had shareware games on it. Games like Blake Stone, Duke Nukem, Halloween Harry, Wacky Wheels, and of course.. Wolfenstein 3D. I love those times. Wish they were still around.
+Christian Cerna No need to thank me man. I'm flattered anyone bothers to watch or comment on my videos. Back then it seemed like Apogee was involved with almost every other game released. So many great games flashed their logo on boot. Good times.
Dude your channel straight fucking rocks! You should collaborate with Digital Foundry in a DF Retro series episode! That would be fucking awesome!
The legendary RareWare dudes ^^ \m/
Battletoads is possibly the best NES game ever. I loved that game.
Great video
Al Snow is making dope ass historical documentaries about video games. Sign me up....
+Elik Anoa'i WHAT DOES EVERYBODY WANT?!
Retro gaming documentaries???
+Elik Anoa'i 😂
Elik Anoa'i Wait what? I thought Al was still signed with Global Force Wrestling? His new gig isn't too shabby either. Head! Head! Head!
Elik Anoa'i He deserves to be in the HOF Class of 2018.
how long did it take you to get your hair to that length man?
+Skurvy2k about a year and a half from a petty short cut
I loved rare and when Sea of Thieves was released I just about had a heart attack
I loved R.C. Pro AM even though I sucked at it.
lower left @ 6:12 that's my backpack!
Damn, this dude is beautiful.
The brothers are a Rare-breed
I loved Rare and they really did shore up nintendo during the mid to late 90s. Sad they went to microsoft, they are much more aligned with Nintendo and their philosophy. Keep the good work.
So what is your thoughts on Vector Man for the Genesis.. i have to say, just as pretty as DKC on SNES.
I had a friend that rented it but I never played it myself so I can't speak to its controls but the games looked great. I think DKC looked better as it was more colorful and seemed to "pop" more but from what I remember Vector Man's animations were much smoother. I remember it having these waiving flags that looked excellent. I recently picked up the Mega Drive/Genesis Classics collection on Steam and Vectorman 1 & 2 are on there so I'll be playing it sooner or later.
It's ZED X Spectrum, not ZEE X! Love your videos by the way!!
+Matt Hopper lol I know, I know. Well, more like I know that now. I'm reminded about this like twice a week 😂. Not that it bothers me, I think it's pretty funny that I made such a dumb mistake. Having never heard anyone talk about it and only reading about it it never crossed my mind that it would be pronounced Zed. In hindsight it's quite obvious. I'm gonna blame it on us not getting these when I was growing up in Puerto Rico lol. Thanks for watching man, I appreciate it!
I'll watch all your vids over the next few days. It's not really a dumb mistake, it's just our Anglicised alphabet pronunciation and I should have realised that plenty of British gamers would have chastised you already! Hehe.
I GOT A WONDERFUL LIST OF IDEAS FOR FUTURE VIDEOS! 😀
1.HISTORY OF TIGER HAND HELDS
2. COLECO VISION ORIGINS
3. WHERE WOULD MODERN COMPUTING TECHNOLOGY BE AT TODAY HAD THE AMIGA SUCCEEDED?
4. CRASH BANDICOOT ORIGINS
5. HISTORY OF NES and FAMICOM WRESTLING GAMES....
I'm excited about No. 3 if you accept any of my suggestions.
There actually are a few Amiga topics I'd like to cover, like the Amiga 32, so I may do something on Amiga computers some day. The only reason why I haven't really done anything that focuses on Amiga yet is because I'm not nearly as familiar with them as I'd like to be, so any video on Amiga is going to require a lot of research. I'm sure i'll get to Amiga products at some point but probably not anytime soon. I actually have Tiger electronic handhelds on my list so I'll definitely be covering them at some point too.
Wrestling With Gaming Nice!
Wrestling With Gaming How about a Crash Bandicoot series... he's one of my favorite video game console mascots.
+Elik Anoa'i Probably. I usually don't cover specific games unless there's something weird or interesting about their development. There's probably just enough about bandicoot to warrant its own video.
1:01 Antvenom's Soundtrack haha
6:48
I'm an 80's guy and I'm like "Ugh, I remember this shit..."
How can you leave out Jet Force Gemini - easily one of the best N64 games they were involved in…
What was that show with the two boys reviewing Battletoads?
+Matt D it wasn't an actual show. Just a terrible, terrible, commercial. Lol
Well, dang. I totally would have watched more of it, lol. Thanks for responding!
+Matt D no prob!
Love the njpw shirt
+Josh Mendoza thanks!
What does everybody want!!! What does everybody need!!! What does everybody love!!!! ???
Like the series, but he needs new background music. I swear it's the same song every time.
+IsItModern it's true! Lol. I only had a few songs at the time. There's more variety as you get into later episodes. My new video on the 3DO has 3 completely new tracks I've never used before mixed in with a couple other ones from other videos. I do always use the same song for the intro and outro as sort of a reoccurring channel theme though. But yeah man, if you watch a bunch of my first videos you'll notice it's a lot of the same songs lol.
Other than Slalom, did Rare ever make a good NES game?
$100 for a NES? When I got mine the Christmas of 1987, mine cost $200 and only came with SMB. I wanted the NES back in the Christmas of 1985, but it cost $300 so I didn't get one.
Great video, but as a Brit I have to pick you up on the pronunciation of our beloved little 80's machine. It's "ZED-ex Spectrum", not "Zee-ex". As you were...
Haha fair enough. Not a day goes by that I'm not reminded of my embarrassing pronunciation. Thanks for watching and putting up with it!
Wrestling With Gaming Don't worry, you're not alone. It's just one of those things that doesn't sound "right" on this side of the pond...
History of Fire Pro Wrestling Series?
ID software in PC and Rare on SNES.
That Battletoads ad gave me cancer.
+Brocktopus that's whack!
Jeez Mac lay off the Fight Milk.
+robofish312 lol
My tired eyes were a little unfocused when I started the video. All I saw was long hair and the NJPW logo and thought AJ Styles was about to preach to me.
Also, you have to bear in mind, the Famicom, just like the ZX Spectrum was based on the Z80 processor, so you can guess why they switched over to the NES.
The SNES wasn't based on the Z80!
Actually, the NES processor was based on the MOS 6502, same that was used in the Apple II and Commodore 64. The Master System used a Z80, though.
Why kind of a name is Yahel?
So now I know who to blame for turning the UK gaming industry in to a sweatshop, to which is it still likened today.
I'm the 999th like, so close yet so far
Battle toads
NJPW is awesome
Swole.
Zed X spectrum
that vhs tape......its got so little tape on the wheels lol.....never seen a vhs with so little tape
also.... as im only 23....the first dev i really started to care about was tripwire...... RO1 is a perfect game
and they still havent jumped on the DLC/microtransaction band wagon
they have a bit of DLC..... but it is nothing compared to most games...i think only killing floor has DLC
and ya can play the game with out it just fine......mostly character skins and a few guns for KF that dont give an advantage over the stock guns
they also support the shit out of modding.....even hired the guys who did darkest hour (a RO1 mod) to make rising storm 1 and 2
Psygnosis t shirt.........er not. Lol
It's pronounced zed ex spectrum
Hey I have those underwear!
Do you even lift bro?
+Bob Marley ha ha!
Wrastling
