Which eucalyptus species are you growing?

Ive got a Eucalyptus pulverulenta ‘Baby Blue‘, allegedly only grows to 3m and responds very well to hard pruning/coppicing with its lignotuber, hoping I've not been given a "baby blue" gunii which will still grow to 80m if left unchecked …
Is doing very well in my south-west facing wall in the corner, ill probably let it do its thing for a couple of years then coppice it.

Yes! If you drive along Southgate you can see the eucalyptus from above - massive specimens.

Thanks for creating this video. We have planted a eucalyptus gunnii in our garden which is a small tree right now - 6ft and thin. I posted on a garden forum and many warned against planting this and said it is risky, damages foundations when close to the house etc. So i have a few questions...how far should it be from the house? Would pruning it mean i keep the root system from spreading and damaging too? If so how hard should we be pruning it, what width and height to aim for? Finally, is it better off in a plant pot so that the roots are contained or will it not survive in a pot?

Thanks for watching! The general rule is to plant eucalyptus two thirds of its fully mature height away from buildings. Given e. gunnii can reach 21m in height, that's 14m away from a building in an ideal world. Mine are planted about 10m away and I'm not too worried. I'd say a definitely no to planting in a pot, and as for pruning it's down to taste. I cut the main vertical growing points all down to about 3.5m (ie how I can reach on a stepladder) each spring. Some people coppice right to the ground to create more of a bush (this also encourages the nicer young rounded leaves) but overall it's down to personal taste - they're resilient plants that can be cut to taste.

@greatnorthernexotic great, thanks for your reply, appreciate that! Ah 3.5m in height? That's interesting, thank you.

How fast do they grow? If i planted 5/6ft one now what growth rate should i expect

I'd say it should double in size in a couple of years. The trunk will get huge really quickly too so make sure you plant it in space, and away from your house. 😄

Easily 2 metres a year if it's in full sun all day. I have a E. gunnii 'Azura' which allegedly grows slower than the normal one and it's grown from about 15cm to about 10 metres in 7 years in half sun. And I always pruned some of it's lower limbs off each year.

can you cut it into a shrub

Yes! You can coppice them back to just above the ground around this time of year. They'll quickly resprout with juvenile foliage.
