I could listen to this Emma lady talk about Rome for … a long time. A very long time. This is saying a lot because I have ADHD and sticking to one thing for any amount of time is very challenging.
I gotta' admit this was utterly laughable at certain points in this "documentary".😅🤣🙂 Some people should NOT be teaching history. Or teaching anything....to anyone....at all. smh😏🙄
The republic was an empire in all but name ever since the fall of Carthage and in the last 100 years before Caesar's ascension there were 5 civil wars. It was only a matter of time before Rome either collapses or is reformed and to be honest I doubt such a drastic change is possible unless somebody takes absolute power.
I loved this one.... I can't learn too much about this man. Too much Caesar is never enough.

How human beings think they are gods is beyond unforgivable.
The deification of Emperors came after their death like the Catholic churches making of Saints. While an Emperor could be referred to as divine while they live, I think it is a mistake to compare this concept of a God to later what would be recognized as modern concepts of a G-d. It was G od but with a small g. Surely the ancient Roman's did not mean G-d in the same way.
Some of them did slip those rails to their ultimate rejection and demise. An Example would be Caligula .

We can be thankful that Caesar didn't live to go to India.
I prefer them primitive as today.
Brutus & co. did not have any forward plan.
They thought getting rid of Caesar would ensure the full reinstatement of the republic.
Apparently, they were wrong. Rome had an empire quite some time before it had emperors. Introducing one-man-rule was simply a necessity by that point.
Brutus & co. may have thought of the Republic as the stable system with changing actors the Empire would become for that size of conquered land.

This comment mainly pertains to the first half of the video but I’m sure I can’t be the only one who feels this but I find this all very superficial. It’s clearly designed as popular history content, which is fine, but I do feel like it encounters some issues:
- ‘Great men’ history - this trope revolves around a singular person and explains a narrative around an individual. This misses the rich and historical context of the times (past, present, and future, but also the cultural, social, political, and economic climate of the time).
- Personal history - I’m always very wary when people describe how historical figures will have felt at a given moment, what they’d have said and done in private, etc. Both primary and secondary source material from the time is prone to bias and inaccuracies. If the narrative revolves around what type of person a historical figure was, and why they may have behaved the way they did, it inevitably creates circular reasoning.
- Using modern day anecdotes - this relies on using phrases like ‘populist’, ‘dictator’ ‘tyrant’, I think I even heard ‘right wing’. Those words have either no meaning, or completely different meanings, in Ancient Rome. It almost feels like character assassination, or building a straw man which helps push an agenda, ideology, or interpretation of events. Which leads onto my next point…
- The morality of statecraft - this issue is slightly less well established, but it does feel like a trap we tend to fall into. If we interpret the actions of powerful people through a personal, moral lens, you miss the point that statecraft is rarely an individual endeavour or subject to the same moral parameters through which we use to guide our personal life and choices. Machiavelli talks about this is lot; that statecraft sometimes requires leaders to do things which aren’t moral but serve to preserve the state or your position in it. Everyone appreciates that this can be used to justify atrocities but if the outcome is your own death or the collapse of the state then it’s naive to think that a leader wouldn’t chose a ‘less moral’ course of action. You also miss the armies of advisors these people have around them, complex alliance structures, court politics, competing priorities, etc.
I’m not saying the narrative portrayed in this video isn’t valuable or necessarily inaccurate, but it’d be a mistake to think that this is the only interpretation of Caesar’s life and times.
