    I don't understand why McFadden from AOPA kept harping on decompression problems on this aircraft when the F16 pilots clearly saw the pilot slumped over in his seat. Com'on man!

      AOPA is woke gov entity and your government desperately needs this to be a decompression accident. If another pilot with a FAA first class medical dies in flight immediately after getting a first class medical, it doesn’t look good for the integrity of FAA aeromedical certification concept. This guy got a fresh First Class medical right before this trip.

      The point is slumped over isn't the tell tale sign, for that could mean anything. The fact that the F16 pilots were able to see the pilot slumped over at FL 34, that's the telling piece of evidence here.

    Thanks - this is exactly why some new Cirrus jets have an AUTOLAND button in the cabin that the Pax can push - but in this case, if everyone was asleep or distracted, they might not even had the knowledge that something was wrong.

    The company I flew for owned a King Air and leased the jets we flew. The King Air always had two pilots although only one was required. On two occasions having two pilots was very helpful. One involved an engine failure and the other was when the nose gear was stuck about halfway up. Sure a single pilot could have handled these situations but having someone there to handle the radios and work on the problem while the other pilot flew made things easier to handle.

    I agree with your first vid. He died at the controls. Prob had privacy curtain closed. Seems like alot of pilots have been keeling over the last couple of years in flight.

    I remember training in a hyperbaric chamber for rapid decompression to 25,000ft back when Pontius was a pilot.
    The first really obvious effect I noticed was a really thick fog inside the chamber.

He does his own thing and gives the finger to the rest of the idiots spouting off. F them. Dan is Dan. He will always be him in his own way and a professional pilot, and an amateur musician. I love his amateur side. It's his character and camaraderie that I love the most.

    The FAA medical in many cases is inadequate especially as pilots get older. I've had airline pilots in my cardiac lab shortly after a first class medical and they have had a myocardial infarction.

    Just to pick up on the medical issue. Its worth looking at the average age data for private pilots and seeing how this changes each year. ideally the average age should not change but in the worst case if it goes up by (say) 9mo the population is aging significantly. If there was a big influx of pilots 40 years ago a lot will now be in the heart disease risk stage and we know the medical tests are not 100% reliable. The age profile data should show if you are in that peak risk period with the highest probability of diagnosed problems.

    One Worldwide event has put millions of older Pilots into a very dangerous position. It's been known for 2 years that a serious side effect of Government Mandated Medical treatment can raise the possibility of Blood Clotting. Single Pilot Aircraft with older Aircrew are particularly at risk

The jab also has your own cells produce the spike protein of the virus which then spreads throughout the body, including the brain. The news about Jamie Fox couldn't be hushed anymore. Stroke/brain clot, was forced to get jabbed to continue work on movie set. Now, unable to walk and talk normally.

    Jets certified for single pilot operation are fine and can save operational cost. The risk of course is if the lone pilot becomes disabled.

    Thanks. If I hadn’t watched both your great videos I might have gone on thinking that this was a case of hypoxia caused by loss of cabin pressure. I’m guessing the pilot was current on all his shots, malaria, typhoid, and the other more recent illnesses. So THAT couldn’t be the cause?

    There is no door to the cockpit. You're telling me the adults in the cabin never looked into the cockpit which is in clear view from the VIP seat and never checked when F-16's roared past? I can only hope that the passengers were spared the terror of that descent. It's not likely we will ever know why that airplane crashed despite your self proclaimed expertise.

    So your windows didn't defog in a couple of minutes after decompression. That proves NOTHING about this case;
    This plane flew for HOURS with the HEAT ON after decompression, if there was one. It is absolutely unsurprising that the windows were clear hours after the decompression, regardless of which of the 3 types of decompression. Go decompress a plane SLOWLY, continue flying it for 2 hours, and tell me whether the windows fog, and if they do, tell me how long it takes until the windows are clear. Not 2 hours, I guarantee.
    Or explain why the pilot would turn the heat off the second he realizes he's having a medical emergency, or how he would turn it off if he passed out before even realizing he had an emergency. There's no reason to turn the heat off, and even if there were, it would not be a priority during a medical emergency, a decompression, or any other cause of this disaster.
    So the shades were down. Fine, the chance that your theory is right, becomes a few percent more plausible. It is still extremely likely the cockpit was visible to the passengers. I'd say that closing the cockpit off, while single pilot, would be a BAD DECISION by a BAD PILOT. Are you saying he was a bad pilot making bad decisions? No, I didn't think you were.
    It is extremely likely that with any medical problem but passing out, he would have yelled to the passengers. It is extremely likely that one of the passengers would have noticed it was over an hour after the ETA. It is extremely unlikely that both women would have ever chosen to BOTH go to sleep while caring for a child. Leaving a little kid unattended for hours on end, just isn't something that women do. One would always be designated as "on duty" even if the kid were asleep.
    Stop thinking you know it all. You have a theory which is plausible, but is only the 2nd most likely theory, or at best tied for 1st.
    ADMIT IT, if the windows were frosted over, you'd call it a slam-dunk Payne Stewart case. The windows don't have to be frosted over in a Payne Stewart case, it depends totally upon the cabin temp and cabin air dewpoint. Those both depend strongly upon the exact nature of the decompression, and whether it is admitting a huge amount of outdoor air directly to keep the initial fogging frozen despite whatever heat is on.
    You're also assuming that the aircraft failure wasn't a failure of the cabin altitude sensing/warning system. I was living in Andover, MA a few years ago when the pressure sensor on a removed/replaced section of gas pipe was accidentally left active as it sat at atmospheric pressure on the ground, telling the gas line pumps to pump harder and harder, until home/business explosions and fires happened all over my town.
    Like you, maybe he figured that if there are no warning lights, there is no cabin pressure problem. Maybe he thought that for a few seconds too long. Usually a good pilot like him will catch an error like that, and have the mask on in time. We only see the ones who didn't, on the news. Maybe he's just the unlucky one. It's no different than 10 drivers on the highway nodding off for a second. 9 out of 10 startle themselves as their head nods, wake up, and avoid death and destruction. They never make the news. The one who dies with their family or crosses the median and takes out another family in a minivan, makes the news.
    For all we know, he might have fallen asleep (we 60somethings are at increased risk of that) before/as the pressure bled off during an inadvertent nap he never woke up from. Maybe coincidental timing, maybe made drowsy by declining oxygen, we' may never know. Sure, maybe he had a heart attack (awake or in his sleep) instead, or maybe he badly needs a CPAP when sleeping, and the cabin remained pressurized. But you are giving too little credit to two women caring for a child, to even admit that one of them not only might have been awake, but almost certainly one was.
    Both the pilot and the owner took a risk going single pilot with a 69yo and an empty right seat. Either could have given a veto to that. It's not that hard to find a pilot willing to sit in the right seat of a jet for a quick down and back flight. A completely flyable airplane ran out of fuel and spun in, hours after trouble started. That's simply not necessary, ever.
    You're very obviously starting from the assumption of "The pilot would never make a mistake", hence the medical emergency conclusion. So, you're really starting from the assumption of a conclusion, not unbiased analysis of what is proven and what is not proven. Nothing is proven, except the fuel running out without a functioning pilot at the controls.

    Dan, old timey pilot here. I agree that the cabin did not dump to FL280. As a physician (which means I cannot run for President or to head the FAA because I actually know 'something' ) I agree that a medical event in this age of male is likely. I will suggest that a slow cabin leak could have done the job of triggering an MI in an older male. It didn't have to go down to ambient pressure, just high enough to stress the body into "the last straw" and that did the rest of the job. As an EMR doc I have seen it where the patient survived the immediate crises then minutes later the clot ruptures and it is the widow maker artery. In this crash we will never know.
    I don't tend to think that the Airforce pilot who was supersonic was a hot dogger. They fly in pairs and if he left his wing behind for a joy ride, his court martial would already be announced. If two went supersonic together then it was under orders. The one might be a loose cannon but the other is not going to throw his career away. The final story on that will come out. As far as public panic - the public needs a swift kick. As a boy in Michigan in the 50's and 30 miles from the airforce gunnery range, sonic booms were daily. Even the chickens ignored them.

      Yep, in the 60’s I lived in Virginia west of NAS Oceana … Sonic booms were generally heard (AND often felt) multiple times daily. It was just part of daily life. It was a great time to be alive.

      Seriously? Going supersonic is not an offense punishable by the UCMJ. Don't know why you brought up 'court martial'. This is baseless BS. Pilots are 'Pilots In Command'. Try being one once. They do what they need to (mission) unless there are prohibitions written into regulations regarding their conduct in the air. What the F did you actually pilot in? Did you ever serve in the military?

    Dan - I took off IFR from FDK less than a half hour after this event. Heard the 'boom' during pre-flight and thought it was a bird deterrent on the airport - it wasn't very loud out in Fredneck. My buddy and I even heard the VA state police helo talking with Potomac TRACON about the MTN OBSC around MOL while they were conducting SAR on the way to LYH. We had no idea what had happened, but did say a quick prayer for whomever they were searching for.

    As an A&P Mechanic that worked for Cessna on Citations for 34 years I was glad to see you nailed the operation of the warning systems correctly unlike some people who think they know. I saw one person say that the Citation V has a Digital Pressure Controller which is false and made no mention of the warning events that the cabin barometric switch sets off. I have seen it all work because I've hooked up Pitot/Static machine to the switch and ran the test more times than care to think about, mainly due to deployment of the cabin masks which are a pain in the ass to repack. I also fully agree with you that there should be two pilots in that category of Aircraft.

      Wonder if whomever mentioned the auto pressurization system, was thinking of the Encore+? I believe it does have an automatic controller doesn't it? And is the same type designator, easy mistake to make.

    I flew single pilot jet ops for an owner for a couple years. A CJ1, but still. Flew all over the east cost and NY airspace. I once asked the owner about having a 2nd pilot and the owner told me that if something happened to the pilot in flight, then it was just their time to go. 🤷

    It’s really sad this happened. I think the takeaway is that you should always have a second pilot when carrying passengers. Sure, it’s not required, but having redundancy could have made the difference.

      I got your vibe on that one. Watching single pilot ops here at my local fbo (klzu) always gives me shivers as they're always older guys. I'm left thinking... shouldn't the passengers know the real risks here? Then some clueless bozo on blanco's video today was saying that the passengers should have gone to the cockpit and tried to contact ATC. Really dude? A mom, a nanny, and a little girl? You can't make this sh$t up!

      @@dryan8377 you are 100% right. I’m 60’s could do single pilot ops if I was in a jet. It’s not about the money, it’s about the safety of the passengers. I know my days ahead are fewer than those behind me, so having someone sitting in the other seat gives me comfort. The safety of passengers greatly exceeds any ego and salary I might get. I couldn’t imagine doing single pilot ops in your 70’s without a backup.

    Callsign COSMIC flight package out of Atlantic City did not meet the callsign BRAVE flight package ( from Andrews ) at the initial intercept... they were minutes behind. They didn't go supersonic "because they wanted to". They went supersonic to catch up to the intercept (already initiated) and to get more eyes (and let's be honest... more guns) on-station to assist BRAVE. I spent 8 years controlling Air (AWACS | E-3) and our aviators are pros who tend to be mission-oriented, not hot-dogging Maverick book-deal wannabes as you suggest here. Ok, I lied -- we do have some hot-dogs, but certainly not when pulling a real-world scramble over DC.

    I just retired from the USAF after 41 years of service. I was a flyer for 38 of them. I was an army tank gunner in the beginning. I became a flight engineer and enjoyed every minute of it both military and civilian. I’ve experienced several decompressions during my career. Rapid and explosive. And slow leaks that were insidious. I caught them all. Insidious and slow, I saw it on the cabin altitude and differential pressure indicator, that’s my job. Explosive? Well that was self explanatory BANG what the hell was that? I yelled “decompression the cabin is out of control.” The pilots were sitting in a state of shock. I was told later by the pilots they had no idea what was happening and when they looked back at me yelling and reaching for my mask they knew it was serious and reacted, we only have seconds at 35000 feet. Good times.

      @@bobh6728 yes, it got foggy fast. It added to the disconnect from reality. Cold and foggy. It was weird, I was focused on my instruments, the cabin altitude was at max altitude, the climb rate was pegged at the top. When you put on your mask and breathe pure oxygen your color vision just pops. It’s amazing, you don’t realize you had lost all color perception.

    I used to work on crewing for critical jobs, including piloting planes but also subsea and critical infrastructure. Many times the workload was well below what one person could do, but we always advised or mandated 2 becuse these were very high consequence tasks. All the basic human factors peer to peer checking and CRM are based on 2 people and if you have only one you loose many layers of protection. Often the role of the second person was to keep the person awake, but this really mattered, a crew of 2 would talk and stay alert, a single person would drift off and be slow to respond to an alarm. Of course this was all cost driven but you had ship operators trying to single crew the bridge of a supertanker and save a few 1000$ on a 100M vessel and cargo. My advice is always have 2 people, the cost is minimal compared to the downside. Sadly there have been crashes due to pilots arguing, but this is a failure of CRM, not a result of having a a co-pilot.

      Excellent points throughout. Retired MD-11 PIC and airline VP... On long hauls, we typically had three qualified drivers up front especially on take off and landing phases. Unlike when my dad taught me to fly decades ago, flight deck crews work as a team to not only check each other, but to provided essential input from a second viewpoint. On more than one occasion, I needed a different perspective from my own to insure safety. Pilots constantly talk among each other.
      Flying has so many variables, and the workload in TCAs are so great, that it has become obvious that good teamwork (CRM) is vital. While I am not opposed to having one pilot alone in the cockpit for short periods of time during cruise, with O2 masks, two qualified, alert pilots are better than one! I am concerned and unfamiliar with the pressurization alarms on corporate craft. That would be good to know. Given the health problems associated with those who took the C19 injection, and the subsequent lessening of airman medical standards to accommodate those who may be affected, today two pilots should be a requirement in all but smaller single and twin engine aircraft where pressurization is not a concern.

    Of course, the pilot was not a young man & we don’t know his medical history. There are a few sudden onset problems that could cause the pilot to lose consciousness & slump over in the cockpit. The most common would be heart attack or stroke.

    Very good points. I tend to raise my eyebrows whenever I hear statements like “there is no way”. Many real life crashes ended up having causal chains that would have looked at first blush like “there was no way”, sometimes by definition (like the 737 rudder hardovers, which no one even considered possible because it was so rare and needed exactly the right circumstances to produce). I prefer phrases like “it’s unlikely given what we know”. Suppose the causal chain here included a few things like rare maintenance procedure that left the pressurization out of automatic (as happened on Helios), something distracting the hypoxia expert pilot during a slow loss of pressure so he didn’t get his mask on in time (even experts aren’t immune to the brain fog that can set in), etc. most real life accidents are a series of one-in-a-thousand coincidences overlayed just-so.
    (As I said on the other video, that doesn’t mean Dan isn’t right. I’m sure the ntsb will investigate all the evidence and find the cause.)

    7:00 Let's be fair: we don't know what orders that one sonic boom guy was given over the radio or how much further he may have been behind all the others.
    Also: out of the six or even out of each of the three pairs they did not all fly at the same exact route and at the same time as far as I know. I don't know if they take off in formation but I'd assume it's possible they were not in formation at every second of their flight and with orders to hurry to the scene not everyone's situation is identical for example regarding the speed they need to use to arrive there at the same time as their wingman/leader.
    I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying you don't know if you're right so perhaps let's keep him innocent until proven guilty.

    I don't understand the hurry! These jets busted the airspace in a very busy corridor and caused a lot of grief for the controller from what I heard of the ATC transcripts. There was certainly enough information about the aircraft well in advance of these jets being scrambled. So why this 911 response? All those delays and departures because of one aircraft with a disabled pilot. Dan, Is this just another over reaction! Why not try and intercept this Citation prior to the jet turning south over Long Island?

    And nobody talks about vaccine risks do to the body’s even by pilot’s who often get forced to get the shut. Just a thought. That could also be a reason for incapacitating. Of course all the other facts to about stroke and heart attacks or Adrenalin shocks. Well, the thing starts by zero. Why do people with the possibility to afford a jet fly they family members or management employees or what so ever around with only one pilot? To save this money can cost way more than saving this money for the second pilot. The loss of life on family members. It’s obviously that in the near past a conspicuous number of pilots collapse. The reasons are not the point. The point is, knowing this and it goes on like usual. The second pilot is a must have by operating these jets in my opinion. That would have saved the life of these passengers of this Citation too. But this is clearly said only my personal opinion. I personal would not board a plane only with one pilot, if I could not handle this by my own save. A Citation is not a Cessna 172.

      Sonic booms were a regular occurrence on weekends they drilled. Rattle the windows and it became so normal we barely noticed

      Same situation for me. I lived in Hayneville, GA for several years. The F-16s from Robins Air Force would sonic boom the area almost daily around 11am. No problem. I don't understand why these folks are crying about it🤷🏽‍♂️
