Great points all around. I am a 3 metal stacker, Gold, Silver, and Lead. The gold and silver are a hedge against inflation and the demise of fiat currency. They have been around as money and barter for thousands of years. Having some cash on hand outside of a bank is a good idea as well. As banks continue to fail, it may be difficult to get your money out of the bank when they close the doors. The lead stash is self explanatory. When people ask why do you have to have an “assault” type weapon a magazines that hold 30 rounds, the answer was expressed across the globe on Saturday when terrorist went door to door and slaughtered civilians. You cannot rely on the government to protect you so protect yourself!!

get the message when the BOOM! sound occurs.
Also, I find the "you can't eat gold / silver" argument to be completely vacuous. There are a great many things in life that are of considerable value but that are not edible.
Boots, gloves, jeans, warm coats, extra socks, a stack of hand tools, ways to make a fire, ways to make light, meds, fish hooks, ammo, 1st aid supplies, books, rope, solar
battery chargers, and about a million other things as well. Not to mention that fiat currencies are not edible either but they sure can be useful at times.

It's pretty simple really. You need three categories of things.
First is the things you will need, such as food, good clothing, medicines, soap, etc. The list is huge but it's all just the regular stuff you buy anyway. When you're at the store, buy two instead of one, and rotate the oldest into use.
Second is money, to trade for what you don't have. There's no way you can anticipate everything you will need. If you need something, you may be able to trade some canned food or soap for it, but if the seller doesn't need that then you need a means of exchange. Cash, Bitcoin and precious metals all have a role here. Personally I like cash then silver then gold and finally some BTC.
Third category is a mans to defend yourself and your stuff. Doesn't do any good to be stocked to the ceiling with canned goods if someone can walk in and take it. Same with money - having it is only half of the solution. For this I like security preps of all kinds, and a mix of pistol, rifle and shotguns to draw a firm line in the sand.
What amazes me is when you hear people talking about one of these categories but ignoring the others. Just plain dumb.

Some thoughts: (1) At the time you go to spend your gold, you are no longer keeping it secret. And between those you know and trust you can barter or run a tab which is what communities historically did. (2) Large denomination gold will be hard to spend without converting. What I have heard is that there will be places for converting large denominations of gold for smaller denominations or other forms of currency, but bandits would wait just beyond the security perimeter as this would be a target dense area and follow until it is safe to waylay or just follow you back home and mark your property.

[Sigh]...spend your gold WHEN THE HOUSING MARKET COLLAPSES AND WALL STREET FOLLOWS SUIT. or vice versa. You do not go down to your local gas station and pull out a $20 Double eagle. You use cash, or, silver if they take it. Silver is for barter. Barter will involve individuals who have items others may want. Will there be bad guys? Yes, you need to weed them out or be prepared.
The rest of your gold left after gobbling up bargains on houses and other assets, is left for your heirs. Silver will sustain you.

The sad part is the vast majority will not embrace PM's, no, and when their lack of understanding regarding PM's, is so behind the curve to secure some value, it will be past such time as all will be held, and markets will not be realestic for fair value in PM's to be purchased. I think about this all the time. I've even had people tell me if things do go south, they wouldn't even want gold or silver because it's worthless. They want food, bullets, necessities. But what I always tell them is, necessities will be scarce for every human alive. Why would you trade food? You need food for as long as you live and food also spoils. Everyone will need food, so nobody will be trading it. The only way anyone would trade is if they are farming etc. In that case, they will be looking for other commodities since they'd have a food surplus. But where gold and silver come in is they are like a wild card. They could be traded for anything. They don't go bad or spoil. If you only have a few commodities, then you'd have to find someone who wants those specifically to trade with. They might not have what you need etc. The idea of money in general has always been a weird one to me. Technically it's not needed. But here we are. Also, it doesn't matter if you have gold or silver, people are going to kill you for whatever they need. Even if it's a chicken leg or bottle of water. Hunger is a real thing.

Exactly 100 years ago hyperinflation hits Germany (4 years after WW1) My grandparents were small-size farmers in Germany.
After WW1 grandfather planted hops (for breweries) and made at that time a fortune of money. For some money farmland
was bought, most money went to savings account at local bank. All that money at the bank became totally worthless when
hyper inflation hits. The land was still in possession of the family when times recovered. If grandfather would have bought
gold coins, he would have not have losses.

An old story describing Germany's hyperinflation in 1923 was about a man who went into a store with his wheelbarrow full of the million and billion mark notes he would need to make purchases. He momentarily had to go into the nest aisle to fetch an item. He left his money filled wheelbarrow for less than a minute while going to get the item. When he returned, all the money was laying on the floor while the wheelbarrow was gone!!! In other words, the wheelbarrow had value, the paper money did not.

Very well said. I think focusing on any one thing for preps is a mistake. In a SHTF event, alot of things will make you a target. In my personal opinion, Its more likely that having loads of food, a water supply, and power would make someone more of a target....as you said; you cant eat gold, gold wont keep you warm and dry, and people become very desperate when they get really hungry.
In a terrible event, you need water first before all things or you wont make it 2 days, then food, shelter, all of those are necessities. Everything else is a luxury. Guns & ammo will be needed to protect all of that, or here in the US you will absolutely lose it. Quickfast. I do think that ammo especially will be as good for barter as silver, rice, flour, livestock, fuel, etc.
Having enough rifles and mags to pass out to your unprepared (but trained) friends and family is not a bad idea at all. But having 50 rifles and 20k rounds with no food stores, stable water supply, or barter items to get them (like gold and silver), IS a bad idea.
I vote for splodey videos 😂

Preps are useful for what they are useful for. Gold & Silver provide you a way to preserve purchasing power for the long-term and in virtually all but the most extreme of environments. It's a way of being independent or outside of the banking system. Given our current and likely future circumstances, it simply makes sense to incorporate Gold & Silver into your long-term plans.

Just got my first silver yesterday, 12 Britannias just for fun. I’m already seeing how you can be bit by the silver/gold bug.

The SHFT scenario is a myth. No collapse will happen, just less purchasing power is you do not have metals..

This is why you never speak of your stacks unless they're up 4 sale atm

There must be a tactical benefit to flashing a pink mag w/confetti chips ... when every micro-second counts, I can see that!!!

An oz of G ea month is about $1850. Thats a lot of disposable income mist DO NOT have. An oz of S is about $25, 4 oz is $100 and much more achievable for most

Great post. Most retail buyers (no 1 in this comment section of course) concept of SHTF is based solely in movies. I put water at the top of the list. Water, guns, and food...then gold LoL. SHTF in USA would probably be closer to a mix of Russia's fall and the current state of Colombia/Brazil, imho.

Yeah, an extended and increasing slump.

If ever faced with a shtf scenario and say, an event such as an emp wiped out electronics capabilities, leaving many without the ability to access the internet etc..
how are spot prices determined during times of bartering gold & silver for goods/ services?

Spot prices become irrelevant in that scenario. Spot prices are global commodity prices. When access to the globe has ceased; the price of silver or gold on the other side of the planet won't matter. Supply and demand is likely to be strictly local.
