All the best to you and Allen on the Edan Audiobooks!😊 I will be starting on the «Prince of Nothing» Trilogy this Summer, so will definitely be listening to your discussions with Johanna, Raf and Jimmy while reading! 😄 You, Josh, AP & Bridger talking Classic Fantasy, now THAT’S A PARTY!🎉😎
After a slow March, I finished in April «The Fort» by Adrian Goldsworthy (City of Victory Trilogy #1, Historical Military Fiction set during the Campaigns of Roman Emperor Trajan, Sequel Trilogy to the «Vindolandia» Trilogy), «Empire of Silence» by Christopher Ruocchio (Sun Eater #1, Space Opera/Sci Fantasy), «Islands in the Net» by Bruce Sterling (80’s (Post-)Cyberpunk 😄), «Howling Dark» (Sun Eater #2) and «Idoru» by William Gibson (90s Cyberpunk 😄).
For now, «The Fort» is my book of the month, as I loved being back with the characters I had come to really enjoy by the end of the «Vindolandia» Trilogy and Goldsworthy really knows how to weave real history into his story! I have really enjoyed «Sun Eater» so far, I know «Demon in White» is the favorite of many, so maybe I just need one more book in the series to go from enjoying to loving it! And the Cyberpunk book where really fun and interesting, so a great reading month!
I had to rearrange somewhat my April and May TBR, as Petrik & Jake Bishop group-pressured me (though in the nicest way, after all Petrik is Southeast Asian and Jake Canadian! 😄) into start reading «Howling Dark» right away after finishing «Empire of Silence» earlier in April, so I pushed back «The Green Pearl» (Lyonesse Trilogy #2) from April till May.
Further on my May TBR List, I have:
«The Wise Man’s Fear» by Patrick Rothfuss (Fantasy, sequel to «The Name of the Wind»)
«Madouc» (Lyonesse Trilogy #3) by Jack Vance ((Pre-)Arthurian Fantasy)
«The Dragonbone Chair» (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, #1) by Tad Williams (Epic Fantasy, a key influence for George R. R. Martin's « A Song of Ice and Fire»)

    • @MacScarfield
      @MacScarfield 5 месяцев назад

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy To give you a sample: In «Howling Dark» (book #2) the Main Character Hadrian is told by a (to put it spoiler free) opposing figure «Sibylla ti theleis». I am 100% sure that is a reference to the Epigraph of T.S. Elliot’s famous poem «The Waste Land» (which in a loose narrative deal with death and rejuvenation, faith and post-war depression, with multiple allusions and references to Ancient Literature, Religious Texts and Arthurian Myth, so quite fitting for «Sun Eater»😄), itself lifted from Petronius’ «Satyricon», meaning in Greek «Sibyl, what do you want?» (The Sibyl being a Roman Oracle, this specifically being the Cumaean Sibyl who in «The Aeneid» guides the Trojan Hero and Roman Ancestor Aeneas through Hades and who had been granted immortality (though importantly without eternal youth) by the god Apollo), to which she replies «apothanein thelo»: «I want to die»!
Is it any wonder that it takes me some time to research and double check everything in «Sun Eater»?! 😂 And I have not read any Gene Wolfe or «Hyperion», so most likely I missing out on a whole bunch of stuff! 😅
      Cheers! 😊

I think Bakker's Second Apocalypse books are the most incisive and mind-bending fantasy books ever written, and easily by leaps and bounds the best "grimdark" fantasy that I've read! Such an incredible mashup of high fantasy/epic fantasy on the one hand and grimdark on the other, and the influences of Gene Wolfe and Frank Herbert are even stronger than Tolkien and Guy Gavriel Kay, as strong as those influences are, in ways that knock my socks off.
Every time I see those books mentioned it gives me the itch to dive back in again!

@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Absolutely! He takes the grimdark parts to pretty gruesome extremes, but it rarely feels overwrought or done for shock value (at least not primarily lol), but as integral parts of philosophical and psychological and sociological arguments he's making under the surface of the text.
He is addicted to taking philosophical arguments to their extreme conclusions, and I think those parts not for the faint of heart being as few and far between as they are in his books is him RESTRAINING himself somewhat, given that lol

Aspect emperor will ruin you Philip 🤣 you are not ready for the slog of slogs if you thought Prince of nothing was dark; however that being said some of the best writing I have ever read are in these books and can’t wait to see your reaction to The great ordeal, always remember kellhus knows all and there’s a head on a pole behind him 🧐

That's quite a lot going on! The conversation between you, AP and Library Ladder in particular is going to be very, very interesting to see.
I'm sure the comments are littered with heads up that the Water 7 arc is going to be crazy (because it was), so what I'll instead say is that there's a scene in there between Nico Robin and a new character you'll meet that proves she's the most dangerous person in One Piece. You'll know it when you get to it and you'll remember this 😂

Can you please make timestamps and put them into a description so that we can watch only the part that is interesting to us? Thanks.

No way man. There were so many topics talked about in this video on quick succession the amount of timestamps needed would be enormous

My offhand comment on one of AP's videos, which wasn't really thought through, caused him to make the "Parable of the Sower" video. I apologize for giving your nemesis content ideas. Not to be a downer, but I actually think what is portrayed in that novel will likely come to pass. It's kind of already starting in places in the country. The sequel "Parable of the Talents" has the president using the phrase "Make America Great Again". What?!?! These were written in 93 & 98. Did she have a time machine?

How can I trust a Grendel slanderer? They have his arm on display and you all think its fine.

You’ve been listening to John Gardner, haven’t you? He’s an incorrigible Grendel sympathizer.

I'm about to watch the G-8 arc of the anime, which doesn't exist in the manga and seems to be well loved. I'll probably watch more moments too, but I don't think I'll ever watch the whole thing. Cheers!

I can only say one good thing about Of Blood and Fire, I sold my BB edition for $500! Other than that it’s is a very mediocre series
