It is both sad and refreshing to discover I am not the only one whose childhood left a deep imprint. As Gabor says, it's not just the things that happen to us, but the things that didn't happen that should've happened for us to grow healthy, paeceful, joyful, confident and able to make good choices and live great lives ❤

I had many things happen in my childhood that left me with a very poor self image. The thing that helped me to believe that I am worth something is the word of God which tells me that God loves me so much that He sent His son to pay the price for my failures and sins. He also tells me I am very special and with a purpose in this life. That changed me forever.

A great session as usual. I really get a lot from Gabor maté, who seems to act as a guide not a guru. I’m not as warm to Dietrich, who seems to operate more as a guru having an answer for everything. Just my impression. Go Gabor. Thank you. I’m 72 years old, been a heroin addict, and a corporate lawyer. In the past few years been starting to get in touch with what Gabor is talking about and having some healing take place. Thank you all. Also did 20 years of Jungian analysis and study, which was wonderful, and I feel helped me immeasurably, but never got to the impact of my early life trauma which has made a huge difference for me.

Dietrich is filled with denial and suppression and dissociation.
He avoids trauma , talking about trauma, feeling the trauma - and he supports fantasy ideas about love and Rationalizations and Intellectualizations filled with tyranny of shoulds.
Gabor Mate on the other hand is talking about IFS - and that is direct way how to handle trauma. Trauma does not work well with Dietrich mindset of having politically correct judgments and self abusive ideas to change our judgements nor about being perfect and desire to be person who must love all people on this planet in order to be validated.

@@ranc1977I agree with you! I can't wrap my mind around his way of thinking. Does he REALLY expect the woman who was sexually abused her WHOLE life, to LIE to herself, that her father did NOT abuse her and is "innocent" and she loves him, when NONE of it is true? Not holding him accountable will also enable him to keep abusing and traumatizing other innocent naive young women.

In your mind, in your mind
    One foot on Jacob's ladder
And one foot in the fire
And it all goes down in your mind
Living at the bottom of the stairs in your life
Never a smile knocking on your door
The air is blue and so are you
    Prehistoric monsters on the floor
Last verse of your last song
And God don't hear dead men
The end of the line is in your mind
    And you'll be staying in
In your mind, in your mind
Bone for bone and skin for skin
Eye for eye and tooth for tooth
Heart for heart and soul for soul
    Somebody said what is true
Lock it up and close it down
The sound of morning like a dove
High beyond the rattle and roar
Look into the face of love
In your mind, in your mind
    One foot on Jacob's ladder
And one foot in the fire
And it all goes down in your mind
In your mind, in your mind
    Sunday words are back again
And you'll eat your fun of the middleman's pie
But just a piece you understand
You'll get the rest up in the sky
    Praise and glory, wounded angel
    Shuffling round the room
    Eternity is down the hall
And you sit there bending spoons
In your mind, in your mind
    Father, son and holy ghost
    Sacrificial drops the pain
    On a silver planet cross
    Sanctification on a chain
    They say redemption draws knives
    Storms of silence from above
Stop your ears close your eyes
Try to find the face of love
In your mind, in your mind
    One foot on Jacob's ladder
And one foot in the fire
And it all goes down in your mind

I had a bad gut-feeling when Deirdre said: “…….he didn’t violate you, he did it to your body, and as we aren’t our bodies, he did nothing ( that’s how I understood it )
That’s terrible, we could come to a point when “libertarians”, like Miley, that wants to restrict women’s rights could finally use that idea to simply sustain that there’s no such thing as violation or sexual abuse.” Even if I could agree with the idea that we are more than a body, I have my body to experience it, my gut, my brain, my heart. I think this becomes very clear in Gabors lecture for care givers.

I had a bad gut feeling about Deirdre ALSO! Gabor said that we should LISTEN to our gut feelings, because if we ignore it, we will get SICK, since our minds and bodies are connected. It's quite scary that Deirdre told the woman who was sexually abused her WHOLE life to LIE to herself, and say that her father is "innocent" and she "loves" him, when NONE of it is true! Not holding him accountable would ENABLE him to sexually abuse and traumatize OTHER innocent naive women.

Thank you! This entire talk and Q&A are absolutely brilliant and helpful. I'm in the process of starting a therapeutic practice and seeing that the entire practice is mostly for me to learn, what I need to learn, puts an entirely new twist on it. It turns it into a work of devotion to serve the "reason why I am here in this life". Or in spiritual terms, it's Bhakti and Dharma. Seeing it that way, may actually give me the heart to go through with it and stop being a coward and feeling unfit to do this kind of work.
"Who do you think you are?" is really a great question to bring awareness into our wrong identification with thought patterns, personae inside our psyche and nervous system.
For so long I have been governed by all the stresses and fears that my body has. Even just noticing, that it is the body having a stress/fear reaction, and not I - I am really only watching it happen - is tremendously helpful. Not acting upon it, not getting into mental reactions to the body's experience, is hard practice. I'll keep going with it.

Who would choose the awful things some of us experience in life? I have difficulty digesting that. Sometimes. a set of life experiences set you up to experience much of the same in your relationship because you are subconsciously always trying to win the approval of the caregiver who first denied you as a child. And to give up on that would be too much like giving up on that dream that you are worthy and loveable, despite what you have been led to believe.

Thanks for all this wisdom in sharing your thoughts, your insights and your way.
How is it possible, that the people we love deeply and we feel connected to (parents, children, partners) - are triggering us most and strongly?

47:09 As much as your overall message resonates within me, thinking/believing that EVERYTHING IS A LESSON JUST FOR ME is ludicrous and self centered. Sometimes shit happens cuz shit happens in life. The universe is NOT THAT RIGIDLY ORGANIZED and DEFINITELY NOT centered around each one of us. There's a VERY HEALTHY element of RANDOMNESS in life and the workings of the universe. Thank God that the Creator left that in! 😅

I also don’t always agree with Mate.
But as far as God being our particular Savior, I believe that God is infinite and thus able to know us individually, and we can live in his presence moment by moment. I believe in Jesus Christ, and he is the best thing that ever happened to me. I just wanted to share that hoping to encourage you.
There’s also a devil, demons, cruel people. The key thing is that Jesus is with us through the hard times. We can forgive, and if necessary distance ourselves from group people, and we can resist Satan. We can fight our own evil tendencies, and find forgiveness on the daily as we walk with Christ.

I agree with the message ultimately. I definitely think we need to update the language by now because some people who really didn’t understand/ harmfully unskillful at Life used those words to their advantage. This is a very very dangerous message in the wrong hands so I am extremely thankful that Gabor Mate clarified the base of safety is the place to start.

How does this supplication help in knowing who we are as human beings?
"I seek forgiveness from Allah, there is no deity except He, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining, the Most Merciful, the Most Gracious, the Owner of Majesty and Honor. I ask Him to accept my repentance, the repentance of a humble, submissive, poor, miserable, needy, weak, and dependent servant who does not possess any benefit or harm for himself, nor death, nor life, nor resurrection. Then you say:
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from a soul that is never satisfied, and from a heart that does not humble itself, and from knowledge that is not beneficial, and from a prayer that is not raised, and from a supplication that is not heard. O Allah, I ask You for ease after hardship, relief after distress, and comfort after hardship. O Allah, whatever blessings we have, they are from You. There is no deity except You. I seek Your forgiveness and I repent to You."

Some words of wisdom here but also words of confusion, for example, on the one hand a lot of talk about the body-mind connection on the other hand saying that the self is seperated from the body. Of course a person is abused when the body is abused! Otherwise rape and murder etc wouldn't be crimes against a person!
Saying that you should confront your inner fears etc and then turning around saying you should surpress your feelings and ignorer them and living in an a world of your imagination where you never were abused and and the person who violated you suddenly are innocent! This is not a healthy way of dealing with abuse! The correct way of dealing with it is to acknowleadge it, work through it, if possiblw talk about it with the person who have hurt you and and finally choose to forgive those who have hurt you! That's the way to freedom! Not pretending that it didn't happened!

  • @ranc1977
    @ranc1977 8 месяцев назад +1

It is very confusing when Dietrich says that our Self cannot be abused.
    IT can.
What he tries to tell is about having authentic Self - when something traumatic happens - we will eventually heal and we will eventually die and our body will no longer need money or food and our soul will be safe. But right now - when we need to pay rent and when it is important that we are not homeless and out in the cold - it is really crappy advice to tell us about our transcendent soul - since this information does not help at all, and in fact it adds to unfair injustice that we experience with trauma.
On the other hand Mate Gabor is talking about IFS.
IFS is about total validation about who we are and what we think and feel.
Extreme example is : if we believe we are Martians, then ask ourselves why we are not green in skin. IT is about total validation.
Dietrich was alcoholic and he was neglectful father. That is why he relies on tyranny of shoulds and self abuse.
Everyone else - most of people - we are not anti-social. We are not serial killers. We are not monsters. In fact - we are agreeable and empathic and we have high moral and ethical standards which cause us trauma and pain since we try to be perfect and not harm abusive people and their feelings - so we end up being last in life. IFS teaches us to stop self abuse, to stop adding up more political correctness and to stop magical thinking about loving everyone - since we dedicated our whole life in understanding abusive people and minding their anger mood swings and fixing them. IFS tells us to accept and validate ourselves and not add any more rules and obligations as Dietrich tell us that we must love all people - since we are flooded with them.
He must love all people - since he was anti-social monster all his life.
Everyone else who is not neither narcissistic nor psychopathic - really need to trust own gut and start to believe own voices to cut contact with toxic and abusive people and really allow ourselves not to love them anymore at all to the point that we do not care anything about them at all.

All these wonderful very educated people have some of the greatest recovery plans for the true victims. My sugestion is to change laws of all lands and change them that sexual predetors with capitol punishment. Will that stop sexual abuse abuse,NO. But, its a start. I do not agree that societies should reward sexual abusers with the office of political leadership.

00:54: I don't entirely agree with that. Saying "I am not the body" to someone who continues to endure daily abuse and adding "I love the perpetrator" is declared suicide immediately after these sentences are uttered. It is also a bad message, in the sense of: anyone can do anything and inflict pain on a person, because this person is not the body. These are negligent statements for both a victim and the perpetrator. In a sense, a person's suffering is trivialized. I tend to share the thesis of Mr. Mate, Gabor, whose processing of the past offers a different path that feels good, but which can only be untied if a certain traumatic event does not continue to happen in the present
