I’m a proud owner of this gun. I’m not a super knowledgeable gun guy. I’m a weekend warrior and one month a year hunter. Your review seemed unbiased and was very informative. Thank you. I feel even better about my choice.
I know this was made years ago but I just bought my Taurus Tracker 627. I just wanted to say that this review was well made. Very professional and to the point. Almost could be considered an ad.
I've been looking at the Taurus. 357 magnum handguns for over a year! I look at their profiles in the adds and sales photos! I originally passed on and overlooked the 627 because of the original shitty looking grip. I settled on the 66 because I loved the look and size of the grip. Yesterday I noticed someone demoing a 627 with a different grip. I loved the improvement in appearance! I started watching the reviews and liked the lighter weight and softer recoil! The 627 is now my favorite for purchase!!! The 66 is now my second! I failed to mention that I can swap out the grip if so desired!!!
I've had a 627 for about 6 years and love it. When I first bought it did have a problem (quality control?). The first time I opened the cylinder it fell out. The bolt that attached the arm to the frame was too small (or damaged), and wouldn't hold. It was send back by the gun shop and 2 month later I finally got to shoot. It was worth the wait.
I've got several Taurus revolver, both old and new. I'm a bit of a collector of Spanish, Brazilian, Mexican, and other Hispanic guns as well as French and Italian(older guns that is for Italian). And out of my Taurus guns, I've got the Raging Judge Magnum in .454 Casull/.45 Colt/ 3 inch .410 shot, an old Taurus .38 imported as the Tiger revolver. 5 shot J frame snubbie, but it's in .38 S&W(short not Special), a Taurus 991 stainless steel in .22 WMR, and old .357 Mag snub nose that I dont recall the model number, and my pride and joy a Taurus Raging Thirty in .30 Carbine. In the 70's and 80's Taurus revolvers had a bad rep.. by early to mid 2000's they fixed that when their semi autos started to have some known issues. But they've since resolved that too. Like you said, that was Taurus then, this is Taurus now. They're making very quality guns that I have yet to have had a major issue with. I've even got some Spanish copies of the S&W N-Frames, one in .44, another in .357, and a .45 Colt version. On the hunt for the elusive .41 Magnum variant. But I've been told how those revolvers made by Astra of mine are junk and so on. Put more than enough hot magnum rounds through them and everything. They're still running just fine.. I believe the people telling us how much crap Taurus is and such are only saying it to either pick it up for themselves later or to keep prices cheap. I see that tactic a lot in collectors. Word gets out that a shipment of guns made in Spain sent to China are coming in, they tell everyone how it's pure junk and garbage, then buy it all up for themselves and jack prices up. But the main thing I love about most all my Taurus guns... For the price I paid, they come with features not seen on the S&W's or Rugers at their price point. Ported barrels, fully adjustable fiber optic sights in some cases, and so on. For all those on a S&W or Ruger they'd be $1,000 dollar guns and stuff.
I can say that these are really good handguns, I own one myself and it has never had an issue. This has become my favorite revolver. I tend to shoot it more than my model 29. You can't go wrong with this one. I think I paid $450 if my memory serves me correctly. They may be more now. I have owned mine for three years.
I've had this gun for about 5 years. You are spot on in your review, but during my first trip to the range the cylinder and swing arm fell out of the gun. The retaining screw was too small to hold it together. It's been great since they repaired it.
One of the things I enjoy the most about your reviews is that your approach absolutely lacks the snobbery so common among RUclipsrs who can afford both expensive and moderately priced firearms. All too often others will say things like, "Not bad but you really shouldn't settle for less than a Smith & Wesson," ignoring the fact their quality has had its ups and downs as well.
You are quite right Doug, I'm certainly no elitist. If I find that a firearm or product that happens to be worth buying or owning I will say so. If it's not a good value, I won't waste my time (or yours) reviewing it.
Great review sir.I bought a Taurus 627 a few weeks ago.I have about 300 rounds through it and it has just worked everytime.Like you I ordered the Pachmayr diamond pro grips and will be putting them on.Thank you,I look forward to hearing and seeing you with more rebiews
Another excellent video! I keep buying handguns based on your reviews, and this one will be on its way soon (although 6.5"). I appreciate that you keep an open mind about Taurus and the changes they've put in place. Most forums seem to devolve into bashing with no prior experience whatsoever. 1500+ rounds of 357mag and no hiccups says it all for me. Thanks for the review.
They can say what they like. Taurus has come a long way in the last ten years. This Taurus has sent plenty of lead downrange and is still going strong.
as a reloader for 42 years, gun trading, selling . I have owned many guns although profit always got the better of me because it was extra bill and grocery money. I have smaller collection now and adding when funds allow it. I love ❤️ Taurus pistols and revolvers just as much as my outhers. Taurus spectra 380, pt845 45 acp , tracker 4 inch 44 mag. this can’t be bought from me for love or money. all my self defense weapons in cluding these three work flawlessly on time, every time, any time. anything less won’t be tolerated at all. the lives of my family demands it.
Good review, and I could not agree more. It is one of 5 .357 magnums I own, and like you one of my favorites. It is my go to gun for camping trips. I enjoy your reviews
Great review and you are spot on about this being a great back country carry option. It’s what I use when I hunt on horse back and it’s carries seamlessly. Take care!
I recently picked this up, and came home with an issue. Light primer strikes, resulting in non ignition of many .38 sp rounds. Being mechanically inclined, even though never owning a revolver before, I was able to sand down some extra material off the hammer that kept the firing pin from fully extending. I had also heard of snipping a coil off the firing pin return spring. Taurus has some notoriety, but if you dont mind a bit of tweeking and adjusting, they're manageable. I didn't feel like sending it back and waiting forever for customer service to just maybe fix the problem. "Trust me im an engineer."
A great review. i have the same firearm paid 400.00 new..i also own the 44 mag tracker. and 2 pt 9mil g2 they all are good firearms.total paid just over 1,200.00 I'm very happy with all of them.....again great value and a fine video.....
Nicely done brother. Im looking at the 4" now. I have a S&W 686 8-3/8 barrel but want a 357 I can holster carry in the Southern Utah Mountains which has a lot of Mt Lions and I see deer bones everywhere I hike, its hard NOT to come across them. Plus its hard to whip out such a long barrel for home defense. I have Hellcat 9 mm but a 357 is pretty much a one stop shot as you noted and my revolver will never, ever jam. I wear a POW/MIA patch on the top left of my cut above my insignia. Great stuff, I think you sold me, thanks brother.
Because I have been a revolver man, since I first carried one professionally when I was 19 and am now 56, for over 35 years, I have observed that the younger fellows, from 45 on down, seem to prefer the autoloaders for....everything. I presume they are not like the outdoorsmen with whom I grew up. A revolver, like 32, 38, 44 and 45, is extremely reliable, accurate and versatile and those are qualities that autoloaders struggle to match in the outdoors. With target, self defense, hunting and shot loads available, it's tough to beat a revolver for versatility. I suggest you do a set of shows on the wide variety of loads available in a given caliber and utilized in a typical revolver for the outdoors. For example, I carry a Ruger Blackhawk while hunting but carry a Taurus 85 lightweight when hiking or fishing. Each is in 38 caliber and I load them with two each target wadcutters and shotshells, alternating, and two hunting loads to finish out the cylinder. That way, I have good medicine for snakes, pests, small or medium game, and to dispatch wounded animals. I think it would be a valuable demonstration if you could demonstrate the nature of each loading and the range and accuracy of each. As always, I enjoy your professionally produced and narrated shows and appreciate (sometimes drooling) at your fantastic collection.
I bought a Taurus 605 snub nose 357 and put my first 100 rounds of ammunition through it and to be honest with you it seems like a good guy and I'll see what happens when I put a thousand rounds through it but so far so good shoots good triggers Goods accurate I'm happy for now and if it continues to perform like this what a great deal. I almost forgot it's a lot of fun to shoot especially with full power 357 Magnum rounds the fireball it throw out it's fun !!!!
Ciao dall'Italia.
I have a S&W model 10 38 special I bought new in 1982, and is in excellent condition, which I am considering trading in for a Taurus 65 or 627. I was leaning toward the model 65 but after your excellent review, am now leaning toward the 627 due to lower kick back from the ported barrel. Great review.
I own a Taurus 431 44 special. I like the revolver and have never had a problem with it. Many of my gun pals criticize it and feel it is a sub standard firearm. Would you agree?
Great sales job, but it’s all true, so no puffery. In gaining familiarity with magnum loads, I’m finding the porting and medium large frame help with inertial and contra powered stabilization. It’s still a powerful round though. I replaced the Ribber grip with the same Pachmayr grip you mention. That cost < $20 [w/ Prime] and it was a welcome change. I handle the push and lift well, but with pretty large hands I would favor an even larger grip, especially a nice hard rubber like the Diamond grip, but maybe a little longer, straight but with a lengthwise taper and a flare at the bottom end. Yeah, I’m dreaming. There isn’t one extant, but maybe, hmmm. Anyway, that would be a great design grip for a .44 revolver too!
When it comes to magnum revolvers, it's been my experience that the grips need to fit the shooters hand. Otherwise, the shooter will find that particular magnum very uncomfortable to shoot.
Excellent straight to the point review! Thank you!👍 As for the long term ownership and reliability goes how did it hold up overtime? Do you still own the revolver? Would you still recommend it? I’ve been thinking about getting one for myself as a truck and camping sidearm. Thanks again!
@@Icarryone thank you for confirming that, sir! I actually placed an order for one last evening and I was told today that it’s getting ready to ship. Super excited! This is going to be my only second revolver. 😊 But I’m sure it won’t be my last as I’m already eyeing on Ruger SP100 as well. 😁 Stay safe and keep making great contents!
Thanks for sharing the best review I've seen on the Taurus Tracker 627. I have one just like it arriving in a couple days. I'm going to take a serious look at the Pachmayr grips. I have Pachmayr grips on a PT99AF.
+Icarryone I still need to test fire it. I'm curious, are you using a working gun with a lot of rounds through it? If so, what solvents, lub, etc do you use. Some reviewers have talked about difficulty cleaning cylinder flash residue and the area above the ports. This one looks new.
+Rich Weatherly I use normal cleaning solvents & oils - like Hoppe's #9. For stubborn carbon residue I'll use a non-abrasive product like Soft Scrub and a toothbrush to remove build up from around the forcing cone and barrel porting cylinder etc. I did clean & detail this pistol particularly well for this video.
I have the 6.5 in Model and it is flawless. I never owned a S&W but I did have a number of Rugers and I will match this to one of them anytime any day. I also have an older Model 66 4 in. which has many thousand rounds through it and have never had any issue of any kind .... just pure enjoyment. I agree give them a try they are a fine firearm.
I've been wanting a Ruger GP100 for a while. But the last time I priced one at my local big box store they were hovering around $800. I know they say you get what you pay for, but I just don't want to pay that much for a revolver. This Taurus strikes a good balance between quality and affordability.
Do you remember the model # of the Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips you installed on your 627? I contacted Pachmayr and they replied they don't make this grip for the Taurus 627. Great review and presentation done in a professional manner.
Great video and definitely hit that sub button with a like. I picked up a 627 yesterday. I also have the judge PD in 410 and 45 lc. In comparison they are very similar down to the grip. I feel the 627 may be a little heavier than the judge but that was expected. So far I love it. Can't wait to shoot it but trying to find more ammo is a task in itself. Everyone please refrain from recreational shooting and conserve your ammunition.
Great review bud and might i add that you have the perfect narration voice. Talk to national geographic see if they can put you on the animal documentaries. But thank you very much for the video it helps in my choice this gun in the 6.5 barrel is getting a home on my shelf.
I loved this review. Its hard to find anyone whose done a write up on these revolvers. I actually have one coming from Buds Gunshop. Do you know how difficult this thing might be to carry? Is it around the size of a glock 19?
+xbigbobsagetx If you're looking to conceal carry this pistol good luck. It's a fairly heavy, medium framed, all steel revolver that's perfect for open carry or home defense. As a potent woods or camp pistol it's perfect to carry in a nice belt holster. That aside, you'll really like it.
You remind me a little of Charles Bronson. Very nice revolver 7 shot capacity is awesome. But I've been looking at the Rossi lever gun in 357 lately I've seen on a few videos that lever guns put a lot more velocity on revolver rounds and I really like the trigger on single action guns. Anyway a great review though I always like to see you shooting guns if only to see that metal target start flopping around.
+Robert Bogan Actually, I briefly met Charles Bronson many years ago at the Phoenix International Airport. He and his wife, Jill Ireland, were on their way to Europe - and I wasn't.
Oh so lucky! I wonder though what you where doing at the airport? Charles Bronson is probably one of my favorite actors once upon a time in the west is perhaps my favorite western. The death wish series is amzing too im going to watch the evil men do soon!
+Robert Bogan I was headed someplace a lot less interesting than Europe. My travel companion had a beard and was not nearly as pretty as Jill Ireland. (My luck.)
Hello! I have an identical one and I love it, I treat it with great care. Are you still happy after 5 years? Did it confirm the expectations? Greetings from Italy!
Nice review. I have one and I think it's a nice and competent gun. But, no matter how much I try I really can't shoot well with it. The factory grip is horrible for my hand. I've done some jobs to get the gun smoother for better handling, but the grip still the one that came with it. I'm trying to find this pachmayr #02473 to my gun but it was discontinued by lyman. I would like to know if you know some place to get one ou maybe the Diamond pro for public defender (judge) will fit the tracker.
Hmm, seems like I may have to take a serious look at Taurus. I've been toying with the idea of getting a 357mag revolver. Which I believe I mentioned to you in another one of your videos(Note: I'm talking about a video he did on leather holsters for 6 shooters, really cool video). I thought about looking into a tracker with a 6 and a half inch barrel. I may just go and do that.
Even after having a substantial number of rounds fired through this Taurus, I've had absolutely no problems with it. It certainly would be worth considering.
@@Icarryone do you have any experience with other Taurus frame models? I do know that them and Smith & Wesson basically had the same frame for a little while, I just kind of curious if maybe you will and other Taurus revolvers and what kind of luck you had with them? By the way thank you for the response.
this is papa again I reload for my Taurus pt 845 - 45 super. star line brass , power pistol powder, Hornady 185 gr xtp hunting and self defense ammunition in limited quantity. no pressure signs, works flawlessly. around 1200-1260 FPS . this is extremely dangerous and could kill you so don’t do it without calling the factory to find out there rated chamber pressure capibality. and my loads are not maximum charged. Nana and papa aka the hunter wishing you well.
Excelent review champ. One question, comparing this taurus revolver with ruger and S & W, there is a big difference in stopping/killing power between them? In the case that i use the same ammunition
The only problem I have with this Taurus tracker is that the trigger return Spring. If you replace it with this Spring , Handi-Pak 88011 5/32 x 1 5/16 x .023 WG You will see a significant Improvement .
IVE GOT A MODEL 66 WITH 6 INCH BARREL AND A MODEL 605 SUB-NOSE I JUST PICKED UP A 627 I LOVE THEM ALL TAURUS 357 MAG. GREAT GUNS I LOVE MINE .IAM PLANING TO TAKE MY MODEL 66 WITH ME THIS DEER SEASON I WOULD LOVE TO BAG ONE WITH A HANDGUN....

+dullbrass It took me several hours of cleaning to get it this way.
Whatd you use to clean it up so nicely? I was looking at a used one, dirty around the porting etc. I want it to look like yours!
A little non-abrasive soft scrub and a tooth brush gets most of it off. You will still have to work at it for a while

Ciao dall'Italia.
Grazie. Apprezzo i tuoi commenti. Sono d'accordo con tutto quello che hai detto Paolo.
Awesome review. I especially like the ending notes. Also, beautiful revolver.
Thank you.
Eu tenho um RT 627 aqui no Brasil 🇧🇷uma ótima arma
I have a S&W model 10 38 special I bought new in 1982, and is in excellent condition, which I am considering trading in for a Taurus 65 or 627. I was leaning toward the model 65 but after your excellent review, am now leaning toward the 627 due to lower kick back from the ported barrel. Great review.
👍🤠
Just ordered a Pachmayr grip for mine after seeing it on your video.
I really do like the Pachmayr grips much better than the factory grips.
I own a Taurus 431 44 special. I like the revolver and have never had a problem with it. Many of my gun pals criticize it and feel it is a sub standard firearm. Would you agree?
The only problem you actually have is that your " gun pals" are substandard. That Taurus 431 is just fine.
And Taurus is a totally new company now. That are building a new facility in south Georgia. I think it is almost complete.
I had not heard that - 👍
I think they manufacture their semi-auto 9mm in that location. Probably the TX22 as well.
Cool video...Great Info....and ye I am a Taurus lover my self started back in the 90s...Yes they have stepped up...
+Glock20 dude They most certainly have stepped up their game.
Good review the best part of your review is you put 1500 rounds through that gun and it's still a good good that speaks volumes
It's a solid well made revolver. I have no doubt it will last for years to come.
Your videos are EXCELLENT!!
Thank you kindly.
Still shooting it - still working great! 👍
I love my Taurus I have the 627 and the 605
👍😎
I like your style, earned a subscriber. I look forward to more videos.
Welcome aboard Bob.
I was looking at one in a shop this afternoon, and you may have tipped me over the edge for 2 sales: the 627 and the Pachmayrs.
👍🤠
Nice review sir i intend to purchase one!!!
+Edwin Zambrona You will enjoy owning one of these revolvers.
Thanks for sharing the best review I've seen on the Taurus Tracker 627. I have one just like it arriving in a couple days. I'm going to take a serious look at the Pachmayr grips. I have Pachmayr grips on a PT99AF.
+Rich Weatherly Some folks like the factory grips on the 627 - I just preferred the Pachmayr grips.
+Icarryone Thanks for the information. You did a great cleanup job.
+Rich Weatherly About 4 solid hours worth - enjoy that new 627 Rich.
I really enjoy your reviews. I am strongly considering a 627.
My 627 has always been an excellent shooter.
excellent video thank you sir! I just bought this Taurus revolver.
I'm sure you'll like it.
Indeed i love mine!
😎👍
Subaqua Gene what grain of .357 ammo u use out of your Taurus 66
The Taurus 856 38+p looks like a great 6-shot carry piece, in either 2" or 3". The 3" comes with VZ grip and night sight.
👍🤠
38+P ? The all-new Taurus® 942 is an 8-shot revolver available in both 22LR and 22WMR
@@herbwj Thanks for catching that. I meant 856. I'll correct it.
The Diamond Pro grips compatible with the Tracker 627: Pachmayr 02473
Just picked up one ($450) love it. Needed a 357 carry.👍🏼🤠
Can't disagree with that!
👍🤠
great review, as always. what are your thoughts on this 627 vs taurus's 608 8rounder?
always have liked taurus good well made for the money
+BATJAC J.W I've had several of their Smith & Wesson clones - but I particularly like this one.
i had a model 445 its the 44 spec model light weight it is nice i sold it and wish i didn't.
+BATJAC J.W The only 44-SP I still have is a Charter Arms Bulldog. That lightweight little devil has a bite on both ends.
oh yes mine did too lol i know exactly what you mean.
+BATJAC J.W Might swap it off for a .40 Pit-bull one day.
THAT'S A BEAUTIFUL REVOLVER I WANT THE 6.5 INCH BARREL 👍👍👍
👍😉
I enjoy your videos man, keep up the good work.
+blitzkrieg459 Thanks for watching.
Mine should be here today looking forward to shooting it.
Excellent!
Great video, my 627 will be here this week.
Excellent!
Beautiful revolver~ NIce review, thank you~
My pleasure.
Beautiful revolver there!
+PRVeteran Thank you.
Thanks. Been shopping for a revolver. This helps.
I can't really tell I'm not shooting a more expensive S&W revolver. They handle exactly the same.
Great review bud and might i add that you have the perfect narration voice. Talk to national geographic see if they can put you on the animal documentaries. But thank you very much for the video it helps in my choice this gun in the 6.5 barrel is getting a home on my shelf.
Thanks for the complement but no more full time jobs for me - retired and loving it!
@@Icarryone good for you bud, enjoy the retirement and take care.
Seems like a much better location to have a hammer lock, if you’re going to have one, that doesn’t really mess with the looks of the revolver.
Agreed.
Looks better with the other grips! Came close to grabbing one but went with the GP100 7shot instead..
Nothing wrong with A GP100.
Thanks for this. 🇺🇸
My pleasure.
(My luck.)
Great review.
Thank you.
Hello! I have an identical one and I love it, I treat it with great care. Are you still happy after 5 years? Did it confirm the expectations? Greetings from Italy!
Yes, still shoot it regularly - no issues.
Another awesome video my friend
Thanks Rooster.
Picking my 6in one up tomorrow
Excellent.
Seems like I remember someone saying that grips for the Judge also fit the 627 - but don't quote me on that.
Thank you so much for this video, just right.
You're very welcome!
I like what I heard, went and got one. love it.
Excellent!
I subbed because of the POWMIA.
Aim High!
@@GavatronX9 I know quite a few people who own these newer model Taurus revolvers. I haven't heard any complaints from any of them.
this is papa again I reload for my Taurus pt 845 - 45 super. star line brass , power pistol powder, Hornady 185 gr xtp hunting and self defense ammunition in limited quantity. no pressure signs, works flawlessly. around 1200-1260 FPS . this is extremely dangerous and could kill you so don’t do it without calling the factory to find out there rated chamber pressure capibality. and my loads are not maximum charged. Nana and papa aka the hunter wishing you well.
I generally keep my reloads close to factory specifications. Fired plenty of them through my Taurus revolvers without any issues.
Great review! You should voice over National Geographic scenes!! 😉
I'll take that as a complement - thank you.
Excelent review champ. One question, comparing this taurus revolver with ruger and S & W, there is a big difference in stopping/killing power between them? In the case that i use the same ammunition
Given they all are firing the exact same round - no difference whatsoever.
The only problem I have with this Taurus tracker is that the trigger return Spring. If you replace it with this Spring , Handi-Pak 88011 5/32 x 1 5/16 x .023 WG You will see a significant Improvement .
👍🤠
i have been wanting to buy one of these do you recomend it? and will it kill a bear if i am charged by one
Personally, I really like this revolver. As far as stopping a bear goes, that would depend on your marksmanship.
Would you happen to know how much those original ribbed rubber grips weigh?
Don't have a clue - gave them away a long time ago.
I have a 627 tracker and really like it I put the 617 grip on it and made it even more compact the gripper is terrible
I didn't care for the "ribber" grips either.
Had a clone of the S&W 66 shot everything out of it. Would still have it if a friend did not want it more than anything. Thanks for the video
+PGTMG I've lost more than one gun because a friend or buddy fancied it.
Sweet revolver. nice
+Gun Enthusiast Thanks G.E.!
How is the finish? Is it particularly rust prone?
Had it for a number of years now - never noted any rust whatsoever.
Icarryone thank you, sometimes I get a little rust with the cheaper finishes living in a humid climate
Good review.
Thanks!
👍🤠
Looks way better with those grips.
I think so too.
