@@MerCSonL6 so you have some great content and you explain everything very well, i bought a older hydro splash with a merc 80 on it. i have had a hard time entering my serial number to find parts, its 6235408. so my water pump quit working today. i noticed smoke coming out of the pee hole and I'm assuming that is because of the sea foam but also i noticed some sludge coming out of the back of the propeller and when i shifted into reverse and forward it made a weird crunching sound. id like to get a repair manual for my engine and go through it and over haul it but I'm having a hard time finding it with the given serial number. do you have any tips or recommendations? this is my first boat., thanks

I had to come back to count the bolts, forgot the one under the anode. Also I wanted to pass on something I learned.. Those two nuts that wont come out, are that way because if the housings are stuck together real good, you just keep loosening them and they will then push the lower end free and help separate them... pretty ingenious of the designer to incorporate that...

A way easier method, a little grease inside of the impeller housing, install your impeller onto the driveshaft first, second, slide the housing down until it touches the impeller, then rotate the driveshaft clockwise and push the housing down onto the impeller at the same time. This will bend the blades over and allow them to seat into the housing.

Mercson, I put a water pump in and now I can’t get the shifter figured out. I’ve tried everything.79 merc 115. One time it only went in reverse and nothing forward, pulled it again, now only forward, no neutral. I’ve pulled it out 5/6 times and can’t figure it out. I’ve followed your video but it’s not making sense. It’s almost impossible to get the little splines lined up unless I move the shift lever and then it still is totally out of wack. It was fine before I did all this.

That's explained in this video. 3 things need lined up: first water tube, second shift shaft (may have to jiggle a bit to get the splines to mate), then the crank.... which you may have to rotate the flywheel back and forth for it to click into place. Hope this helps! Son

F,n,or r? Ive been fighting this thing for days and no video has helped to determine prop behavior in relation to gear. Plus I guess my 90 hp mercury doesn't have a reverse cam lock on the selector shaft of the lower unit. Hey Son, I recently got myself a 87 115hp. Prior to imperller replacement with the muffs on water would never come out the tell tail but would out the exhaust nostrils so it is sucking, I've since replaced the impeller and the same result. If the motor is submerged water it does flow properly as it should.
    Any ideas?

    • @MerCSonL6

Sounds like the muffs are bad or water pressure at the water intake is low. As long as it is pumping water when completely submerged I wouldn't sweat it. Son

Could also be that the piss tube is blocked with a chunk of sand or something. The fitting that comes out the back of the motor is smaller than the water line that connects to it. Had to clean mine out the other day. Had some sand in mine in some shallow water on a sand bar. Just take the hose clamp off and blow it out. Works fine now
