She is singing the original lyrics, before the arrogant censors did a number on this R&H masterpiece. I don't know how she is horizontally speaking, but vertically Patti Lupone is a treasure.
Just watch and listen to the dynamics she uses. She effortlessly resets her larynx by swallowing multiple times to ensure that she gives the highest quality tone possible. Excellent breath control to have consistency in volume and articulation. She has definitely crafted her gift into an excellent masterpiece.
Love that she sings the original stage lyrics rather than the G rated recorded versions of Ella et al. They were meant to be scandalous and Lupone does that well.
The slight shimmy she says "oversexed again" i's the best part. The part I look forward to each time I play this performance... That, and the part she leans over the piano to sin into the pianist's eyes... And how she says plum"🥰🤩😍
Ms. LuPone is definitely one of a kind. Although one can hear a difference in her voice as the years have passed (as is to be expected), she still sounds strong and energetic.
@robbiehrte66 Well said. So few people are so born to do this. Everything she sings she does so perfectly without seeming to make any effort. Listening to her sing honestly makes my life better.
This is brilliant - the composition, the lyrics, her performance and the tempo. RE: comments about the up-tempo. This is a funny lyric - not serious. No need for a slow performance. Think about it (without going too deep) its about an older, woman (quite experienced) feeling young again - with sex being a major benefit. That's no place for a slow, ponderous take. (I hate it when performers play a piece too slowly - especially in classical. As if to say "I am a serious, dramatic artist, listen to how meaningfully I am playing this piece ... even though composer didn't write it that way... I'll just ignore that because I'm so serious and important..." Nonsense. I like this tempo - it's fun. Patty may have been simply been trying to keep things moving along - it's show business, you know, and she knows show business. Besides... they changed the tempo several times, which is great. More interesting. Also, as noted below this is the original lyric from the play - so scandalous that most recorded versions of this song afterward were re-written edited. "Boo" to the conservatives. "Hooray" to the non.
lol///its always about love...and how no one understands it...while in it....and there are other reasons performers play a piece slower..other than ego....in fact...most songs MUST be sung different as the performer ages...but..like you said you really dont think very deep.
I believe the original version by Vivienne Segal in the Broadway recording of Pal Joey is upbeat and fast, hence Ms LuPone's seemingly rushed version. While I also love the rendition by Ella Fitzgerald, it's great to hear this in its unadulterated version, nonetheless by one theatre legend.
The lyrics in this are much different than in my Rodgers & Hart Songbook, but I like a lot of them! It's a more sultry version of the song. And the "and worship the trousers that cling to him" is my favorite version of that verse! I'll admit I heard it first in The History Boys, but it's still amazing!
Nobody sells this song better than Patti LuPone. Every word is believable. No vocal "styling" necessary. (Just wish she's taken tempo half a notch slower. What was the hurry?)
I love PATTI! And I love this SONG! But could someone please tell me if there is a video of Stockard Channing doing this song anywhere on the internet at all! I need it. Her performance is haunting and her stage prescence is incredible! But I really do love PAtti!
does anyone know where I can find THIS version of sheet music? I love it and want to do it for an MT audition! If anyone knows i would reeeeally appreciate it!!
She does LuPone… And it’s great! But Marin Mazzie is so far better in this song… Elle fait du LuPone… Et c’est génial! Mais Marin Mazzie est tellement meilleure…. Elle donne moins l’impression de contrôle… Elle vit plus qu’elle ne chante
If ever a person was born to be on Broadway...
She is singing the original lyrics, before the arrogant censors did a number on this R&H masterpiece. I don't know how she is horizontally speaking, but vertically Patti Lupone is a treasure.
The first time I've heard this song get the treatment it deserves; so good.
What a natural she is for this genre. These difficult songs seem effortless to her. She was born to do this.
There are not many performers, in any genre, that do-what-they-do as well as Patti.
Just watch and listen to the dynamics she uses. She effortlessly resets her larynx by swallowing multiple times to ensure that she gives the highest quality tone possible. Excellent breath control to have consistency in volume and articulation. She has definitely crafted her gift into an excellent masterpiece.

Of course she does! I had the urge to hear this song, and as soon as I saw that she'd sung it, I clicked on it!
How can anyone have so much talent? I am simultaneously crying and laughing just to be alive! Thank you Patti!
The sensuality and subtle humour are perfect
The slight shimmy she says "oversexed again" i's the best part.
The part I look forward to each time I play this performance...
That, and the part she leans over the piano to sin into the pianist's eyes... And how she says plum"🥰🤩😍
I love this arrangement and Patti’s singing is perfection...(as usual)
I love what she is wearing! Makes her look even more fab!
Dolce & Havana!
Ms. LuPone is definitely one of a kind. Although one can hear a difference in her voice as the years have passed (as is to be expected), she still sounds strong and energetic.
The perfect combination of music, lyrics, and performer. It does not get any better!
A flawless performance.
I heard this for the first time a few weeks ago and now I listen to it everyday...the lilts, the notes. the feeling put into every word is perfection.
Someone should build a monument to this great woman. Please, come and perform in the UK.
Absolutely beautiful!
love her so much she is so cheeky in this song it's perfect for her and just yessss
Lol the way she says plum>>>> :)
That laugh kills me
Beyond fantastic...the diction is excellent and her rendition sublime.
amazing. And amazing that these lyrics, the original from the show in 1940 were written at the time. Daring! It's wonderful to hear the original!

PERFECT PERFECT PERFECT
I'm bewitched listening to this.
Thanks for sharing. Patti is the BEST!
The trick is to take a very difficult song and toss it off as if she hasn't even rehearsed it. That takes talent and a lot of technical chops.
Very good point.
almost chilling and breathtaking....just amazing..... :)
I love her crazy laugh
It's just not fair to other singers that she can do this so perfectly with so little effort.
just wonderful...thanx for sharing...
cudowne...dziekuję...
I love everything she is wearing

@@jadezee6316 Right! I think. Unless I just got burned... if so... Right! I think.
I agree, but Marin Mazzie’s version is sublime, and slower. It’s brilliant in it’s own way!
Thank you for posting this!
Simply wonderful.

love her laugh
ahahaha i love her laugh at 0:07!!!
Why, why oh why, didn't someone think to do a revival of this with her on Broadway. Or did they, and I missed it!?
P E R F E C T I O N
Great version of this classic Rodgers and Hart number from Pal Joey. Other versions include Ella Fitzgerald, Laura Fygi and of course Frank Sinatra.
Great!
Love the shake she did after "oversexed again". Hahaha.. She's sooo cute for me, even at this age. 😍
It's the best part.
The part I look forward to each time I play this performance...

Take a listen to Lady Gaga's version. I don't want to compare the two but it is quite beautiful.
+John C -- I'm wrong. Of course LuPone is right. Tempo suits the sassier lyrics.
Lena Horne's is the best
+John C I agree. She's rushed it too much.
omg me too!!!!!
прекрасно

Where can I get hold of this whole show ?
does anyone know where I can find THIS version of sheet music? I love it and want to do it for an MT audition! If anyone knows i would reeeeally appreciate it!!
Singing in key of A flat.
!!!
I'm not familiar with Pal Joey. I'll have to look it up.
@mvezza that's what i love about her.
why? Stockard is haunting in this song!
Haha. You have to appreciate her though. She is a classic performer, although I much prefer Marin Mazzie's version of this.
Streisand does this wonderfully, but she also cleaned up the lyrics
She does LuPone… And it’s great! But Marin Mazzie is so far better in this song…
Elle fait du LuPone… Et c’est génial! Mais Marin Mazzie est tellement meilleure…. Elle donne moins l’impression de contrôle… Elle vit plus qu’elle ne chante
An astounding talent. With this arrangement, however, it sounds like she phoned it in. Very unlike the massive singer she is.
ni hablar, la insoportable estupidez de los sajones uuuffffffffffffffffff
insisto ¡ ¡ i n so p o r t a b l e s ! !
this is absolutely brilliant. too bad i just dont like patti lupone after hearing her outburst during gypsy.
I 'd rather hear Barbra 's version
That is the ugliest effing skirt I've ever seen
I love that skirt.
