Magnificent 46233 Duchess of Sutherland Overpowers the Devon Elements

The twelfth edition of The Railway Touring Company’s epic railtour around the U.K. headed from Paddington to Plymouth on Day 1, straight into the teeth of Storm Hannah as it reached Devon. Seen attacking Rattery Bank, the Duchess makes a fine sight as the sun breaks through. The main camera perched high near Barleycombe Solar & Wind Farm is taking the full force of 50+mph winds in the back as 64233 takes it on the nose as she climbs to the foothills of Dartmoor with blowing safety valves adding to the chaotic soundtrack. Having sampled the big pacific’s climbing abilities, Day 2 was all about recording her at high speed and the very best place to do this is at Exminster. Although the worst of Hannah has passed the weather has turned dull, damp and gusty, (with the roar of an airliner overhead climbing from Exeter airport not exactly helping!) but witnessing a big maroon pacific with matching coaching stock steam past at 75mph (+?) certainly helps lift the spirits! and notice the waggle at the rear of the tender as she comes under the bridge!!! Leaving Exeter St Davids after a water stop, the Duchess gets into her stride up the Exe valley, passing Woodrow Barton, taking “The Great Britain” onwards out of Devon on its way to a further 7 days of touring. Thank you to the organisers, support staff and of course, the fare paying passengers who keep this annual “steam spectacular” on the rails, long may it continue.
Beautiful train! My husband and I just returned from several train trips in the UK last month. However, none were this beautiful!!!

Magnificent! And why does it make me so emotional? Days of my youth, perhaps? If so its odd as they were not particularly happy. Days when we felt that Britain really knew what she was doing and we were proud of our achievements and looked forward with optimism ? That's probably more of it, I think. I had (still have, actually) a Hornby doublo set withe the Duchess of Athol loco.

@@Steamclips German NAZI DRB Class 50 led to the Evening Star. It must be said that Stanier's Duchess was inferior, very heavy and inefficient.

They had this beautiful machine on display outside a Butlins camp not far from where I live at the heads of Ayr. Good to see her in action.

46233 or 6233 she takes so much cleaning with the oil and parofinn but she is still THEE very Best locomotive and she still has a lot of appeal to the many volunteers who look after her

Don't think about what didn't help in the background. Nothing as strong as a storm will ever defeat Duchess of Sutherland. My 14th Driving & Firing session, with 5 inch gauge steamy Holy War on the Llangollen Railway, occurred just as a thunderstorm approached. It didn't deter me, so Martin held a large umbrella over my head. I'm not afraid of thunderstorms in general, and I wasn't about to let this one put me off. Nothing stands in my way, when something fun like this comes along. Duchess of Sutherland and I are both made of sterner stuff, believe me.
Would love to take a steam train excursion - how do I find out about their schedule? Have to make plans well in advance since I live in US. Thanks for the wonderful pictures.

The engine is all very well. But I was looking at the scenery. Rolling hills, green grass, hedged paddocks. Just so different from where I live.

Good great film thanks - yes she flew...but the Duchess did'nt overpower Hemerdon (Neither do the new Hitachi's). Incidently the Duchess is my favourite steam loco!

@3:34 Doing an impression of water troughs
I must say that I had not noticed but it is SPOOKY because as you may or may not know, there were water troughs at that EXACT location in B.R. days!!!!!! In fact at 3:51 you can see the roof of the buildings associated with the troughs. Well spotted. Regards, Alan
