  • On Thanksgiving Day 1969, hundreds of people gathered in the San Francisco Bay’s Alcatraz Island to show support for the occupation held there by the group, Indians of All Tribes. The island, known for its brutal former prison, symbolized freedom for Native Americans, and by occupying it they aimed to draw attention to the mistreatment of their communities.
The event laid the groundwork for the #RedPowerMovement and is celebrated each year on Thanksgiving-also called Unthanksgiving or Thankstaking-with the Sunrise Ceremony. Mirroring the length of the 1969 occupation, the National Park Service will host an exhibition on the event for the next 19 months in honor of the occupation’s 50th anniversary.

He was too powerful and that is why he was done away with. There were Israeli agents at Standing Rock when the Native folk were defending their water. This goes way deeper than outside folks understand. Good vs evil. A spiritual war.

Thank you for clarifying the history of the overtaking of Alcatraz. I have always heard of John Truedell, Dennis Banks, Bellencourt and Russell Means but Mr.Oaks became lost in this important historical event. Wonderfully written article and important photographic documentation. I would like to see more photographs.
