    When using the MAX 485 board, do you have to worry about the termination resistor in the 485 network or does the board take care of that?

      If you are connected only one device don't worry. But if you have multiple devices on same line use 120ohm

    Modbus is an old legacy protocol.
    There are much better fieldbus protocols such as Ethereal.
    Modbus will still be around in new devices for the next 20yrs.
