It senses movement of the airplane and door (they are constantly going up and down while parked at the gate due to changes in weight...fuel, cargo, passengers, etc) and prevents the bridge from smashing into the door by telling the bridge to move up or down accordingly.
Btw if you open an armed. A320 door it will. Move the arming lever to disarmed however the A330 has a bolt like that moves sideways so if you open a armed a330 door the slide will open
Is this why the cabin crew give the thumbs up and the ground staff open the door? I operate in A320s and we (cabin crew) open the doors from the inside when the ground staff knocks and gives the thumbs up :)
