The truth is a egg that has not been washed still has its Bloom on it. That means it can be safely kept out of the refrigerator. In America they wash all the eggs so that people don't accidentally see poop on the eggs. Without the bloom which has been washed off you have to keep the egg cool so it doesn't go bad. Unwashed eggs can last for weeks left out on a counter.
This is due to how each country dealt with the salmonella in eggs issue. US has most commercially produced eggs go through pasteurization so they are now stuck keeping them cold. The Brits decide to kill off all chickens with salmonella and so now deny that any eggs have it. My suggestion is don't eat raw eggs you get in the UK because they don't even do random tests on eggs.
