    its one of my favorite feelings to find a 15 year old video on a 30 y/o game that's exactly what I need in the present. Info conveyed efficiently in a relaxing and humorous way. Its funny to say this about youtube videos but they lowkey dont often make em like they used to :')

    Dude, I'm late to the party (I notice it's been 7 years since you uploaded this) but; thank you so, so much!! I first played this game 25 years ago, and have never, ever, managed to get a megalopolis. I followed your guide and this afternoon; I finally crossed the 500k mark. Greatly enjoyed getting my Mario statue. You have become my personal hero.

    • @ASAndrew
      @ASAndrew  8 лет назад +2

      SimCity 2000 requires a different strategy altogether. It's all about using roads (no rails), building a good mix of RCI instead of compartmentalizing each, etc.

    Some game changers here for me. The no roads only rail explains a heck of a lot about what I was experiencing! Also, I was doing the "donut" method and also had the roads going everywhere around everything as well. Replacing the hospitals and schools is a top tier tip. And it's extremely helpful to know the 2-1-1 rule. That really tightens things up a lot. And only needing one single fire station is an eye-opener. I'm definitely gonna play around with these tips! The highest population I've ever achieved is over 200k previously.

    it is this game why I am a humanities major in college and partake in public service. this game was fun, and it instilled in me a big interest and a basic knowledge of how communities work in terms of population, economics, and industrial development.
    You have an excellent guide here too. I am still trying to build my first megalopolis (I've played this game off and on since 1992). Subbed.

    I only built the cities like I wanted it, like a real city would look like.
    After listening to Sim City music on RUclips, I came across this video. I don't know why, but I felt really, really inspired and motivated. I decided to make one, only one, attempt at 500,000. I tried using every trick I've ever learnt about Sim City (mostly from an old magazine, but also from this video). When I had used perhaps 50% of the land I understood that this will be it, I'm going to make it.

    It's definitely a great game. Saving and re-loading a city is an issue known to cause some slumming (electricity is not connected for a short time every time you rel-load the city) and that can definitely slow things down. If possible, never save and turn off the game.

    You are most welcome!
    When you build your city to population 600,000 there is a special message from Dr. Wright that you don't get otherwise (you can see it at about 1:02 on my Sim City - Population 675,000 video).
    Best to my knowledge, there are no special messages after that.

    The fastest way to get there that I remember was building donut blocks. A total of 8 buildings of the same type; 3 on the top and bottom and 1 on each side with an empty space in the middle; just like a square donut. I'd then fill the empty space in the middle up with a special attraction or park land

    @ArchnemesisX - just wanted to followup: I got more aggressive with zoning industrials and wasting no space, and with approx 250 industrial, 250 commercial and 500 residential I was able to achieve a megalopolis with 650k population! I planned carefully, built to about 250k slowly (allowing several TOPs to form), then froze time and built the rest all at once. I unfroze time and the pop. grew steadily to 650k. Success!! Thanks for your tips.

However, it looks like you can do it with parks e.g. too and some left overs. Very interesting! Thanks man

    Hey man! Today I got my first Megalopolis! Got 521k and counting! Thanks for your guide! The one tip I got from you was that the pollution does not mean crap. So I went ahead and built it two columns down, and then ignored the pollution. And holy shit... I'm glad I did. The good thing is now that I got the Mario statue, but the bad thing is that I have potential 500.000+ cancer patients and since I demolished hospitals to get even more people in, they are out of luck! But thanks a million. Can finally (after 25 years) put this game to rest.

  • @ASAndrew
    @ASAndrew  11 лет назад

    Great question. In practice there is no difference between the two types of stadiums (much like the two different types of parks). You only need to build one, but it does increase the land value of the surrounding area, and as such, should be built among R and C zones. There is an arbitrary limit to the size your city will grow without a stadium, so it's basically just a toll booth to get to the next level.

    Hehe, this was my favorite game as a kid, spent more hours than i like to admit playing it, still love it and have never put the same kind of time into it as a child but i want to get the megalopolis and sustain it once, had it for about ten minutes when i was a kid, got the mario statue and all but never crossed that 500k mark after my ten minutes of glory xD..... knew all the general info to do it but seen some minor differences in your layout vs mine (didnt have youtube back then lol) might be time to make another run at it and see if i can hold it above 500k

    When I was a kid I picked map 61 and designed what I thought was a perfect city..........It wouldn't go above 390,000. Just stuck. Eventually I realized my industrial zone across the river was inefficient and wasting a ton of space. I paused the game and bulldozed the entire industrial zone and rebuilt it. I lost 150,000 residents from doing that....but they started coming back. Then the population finally hit 400,000......then 450,000..............then I saw it hit 500,000, YES I literally jumped out of my gaming chair and started yelling. I was so happy.

    Eventually I didn't bother planning or building carefully, I just built alot of zones quickly, so I'd reach that elusive 500,000 more quickly. I had also used one of those land-presents and made an island, where I planned to build my statue. When I finally made it, it felt like a tremendous weight had been lifted off my shoulders, like I had redeemed myself and my childhood. I understand it might sound silly to put so much stock in a video game, but that's what it really felt like.

    Note: Schools and hospitals do have some benefit. Once you get a good number of schools, you'll get a present building (I think it's a zoo), for hospitals it's casinos.
    Also, they don't have zero sims in them, but it's so low that demolishing them makes sense

    What about building zones in a 3x3 pattern with a park in the center and surrounded by transit? If I substitute a gift in the middle, will it still be affective without a road touching it?

  • @ASAndrew
    @ASAndrew  11 лет назад +2

    Usually nuclear meltdowns don't happen in easy mode unless you're low on energy for a really long time or you've used a cheat.
    My advice would be start over. It can take a long time for that stuff to clear up and you have to do a lot of rebuilding.

    • @ASAndrew

    14 years later, do you still like it?

  • @peterplaysbass
    @peterplaysbass 13 лет назад +2

    (PART TWO) the "donut" strategy wasted space. Also, I'd use the $999,999 cheat and build the whole thing at once, then unfreeze time - and looking back I can see that that hurt my city. You might advise people to build slowly, letting new zones develop fully before building more, in order to maximize each zone.
    Question - is it easier to reach megalopolis by using the Freedom scenario (and suffer from no gifts) or using a good landmap (and suffer from some water)?
    Thanks!

    thanks for the video bud, really helpful, i have gotten mega once so far and trying to recreate also any pointers for reducing the effects of pollution?

    • @ASAndrew
      @ASAndrew  8 лет назад

      +Spoogethat Use the corners of the map to build your industrial zones. Then, cushion them with 6x6 spaces of parks (as seen in the video), and then with commercial zones. Your main concern is protecting residential - I wouldn't worry about the rest. Finally, ignore any complaints related to pollution, unless your 3:1:1 ratio is way out of balance, or you're building industrial zones in the middle of the city. It seems counter-intuitive, but Sims complain about a lot of things that never need to be fixed to build a Mega.

    • @spoogethat
      @spoogethat 8 лет назад

      appreciate it, i have been putting them to the outside, and seems to work, usually after i get to about 250000 growth slows down a lot, it sure is a fun game, i had tried a couple of different ways, one similar to how you have built yours, and took it to 1983 to finally get 150000, i had done a little bit at a time, but when i built it like yours but all at once i got up to about 250000ish or so in about 14 years which wasnt bad. Thanks for the help i appreciate it

    • @ASAndrew
      @ASAndrew  8 лет назад

    You should do a video on how to properly execute the debug menu cheat. Or does that not work on the snes version? Rookie issues. I have never been able to make that code work. I found the code at game winners site.
    Can you get that debug code to work on your snes? I am wondering if there is an issue with my controller port 2.

    Actually, I've found schools aren't so bad in the beginning. They get you libraries, and I've seen zones around libraries go straight to top level. After you get all three libraries, then you can seek and destroy :) Still working on Megalopolis. I got pretty close last night.

    I remember the one time I made a megalopolis. My dad was downstairs and decide he wanted to play resident evil 3. I was fairly young and I was still scared of horror games so I went into my brothers room and played this for a while and got really into it. I played for hours and somehow, as a 6 or 7 year old, I made a freaking megalopolis XD

    Show the Start. The exact way how you have to build. I had problems with my start, i froze the video and tried to build exactly like your edge up left. The rest was cool.

    When I was a kid in the 90s, I played alot of Sim City. My brother, my dad and I tried alot to get 500,00 citizens, and earn a Mario statue. We never made it. My personal best was 360,000 citizens. This had been such a huge goal for me, and I was pissed off at my inability to complete it.
    In high school I played some Sim City again, but this time I didn't even bother attempting to get 500,000, because I knew I wouldn't get it.

    • @ASAndrew
      @ASAndrew  8 лет назад

      +David RW The only thing you can do is drop your taxes. I don't recommend going too drastically at first, but try dropping it once every year until it's 2 or 3%. Your city should still be profitable. If that doesn't work, then you may have to start from scratch.

  • @julesnominal1804
    @julesnominal1804 9 лет назад +1

    can't help but notice that you didn't mention the tax stuff. Does this means it's irrelevant? I'm trying to follow your guide but after that most of the challenge is finding money to expand, which just becomes a game of managing taxes to build stuff that cost more like stadiums and ports etc

    • @ASAndrew
      @ASAndrew  9 лет назад +2

      Jules SL Yeah, I wouldn't say it's the most comprehensive guide, and I probably could do a better job next time. With taxes, I generally don't touch it until I'm on the home stretch of Megalopolis, at which point I might reduce it to around 3%. Otherwise, it stays at 7%. The idea is to remain frugal with your infrastructure. Zones only need to have roads/rails on one side to grow. You do need a decent number of police stations, but you only need one fire station ever. This keeps costs down.

    • @julesnominal1804
      @julesnominal1804 9 лет назад +1

      AS Andrew thanks for quick reply! I also noticed that there doesn't seem to be any roads or rails going up and down. Any reason for that?
      Do they not actually need to be connected?

    • @ASAndrew
      @ASAndrew  9 лет назад

      Jules SL You're welcome! Yeah, they don't need to be connected at all! You can go from side to side or up and down, but there's no need to connect them both ways. You'll probably end up wasting space and make it harder for yourself to reach Megalopolis status.

    • @SeekerLancer
      @SeekerLancer 5 лет назад

      The tax stuff is pretty irrelevant. You can bump it up to 8% but any higher and people will stop moving in. Once you've filled your map turn it down for a population explosion.

  • @nuraman00

    I've never gotten a megalopolis. The best I've done is 427K, 408K on Freedom, and 470K, 414K on Map61.
    I'm thinking of starting a new game again. Is it easier to do it on Freedom, or a map? I'm thinking that if I can do it on Freedom, then I'll have accomplished two goals. One in beating all of the scenarios, and two in getting a megalopolis.
    I don't think I knew about destroying hospitals and schools, so maybe that would help me make that final push.

      Eventually the residents will demand a stadium. Not sure if there are any adverse effects if you ignore that. And you get zoos as gifts when you build multiple stadiums and the city is growing.
