My Dad was on the Stryker development team at Aberdeen Proving Ground. He said initially it was supposed to be narrow enough for the streets overseas and be used in urban combat. But, by the time they were done making changes it was way too big for that. I agree that the Russian or Chinese versions are not better. It is highly unlikely that either nation put the time and effort into testing that went into the Stryker. They ran those things all day every day in terrible terrain just trying to get something to fail. When something failed the part was removed and how many hours in what terrain it took the part to fail was cataloged. If failures repeated the part was redesigned and the process started all over again.

In regards to your comment on crossing rivers being not relevant, you’re failing to account for the terrain Russian vehicles are designed to fight in. Eastern Europe is filled with small rivers that they need to be able to cross.

Ironically they still don't use it much, during both Chechen wars they'd always try to build pontoon bridges because Russian doctrine prefers to have MBTs supporting IFVs even against an entirely infantry based force. Maybe they've unfucked themselves since then (one would hope) but outside of recon the odds are they will never cross a river without a bridge to bring actual tanks along.
@@MrMattumbo I always found the concept of amphib vehicles kinda funny, they still need to stop and wait on the other side for the bridge to be built, for the supply trucks and fuel trucks. Probably useful for securing the far side for the bridge I guess.

The Canadian LAV's have something called a CSAM in the crew compartment. Crew Situational Awareness Monitor. They can see everything the turret is pointing at. In colour, IR or in thermal simply by the push of a button. We still post air sentries in the side hatches that are up-armoured, but the CSAM is amazing because the crew can actually see what the objective looks like in real time before dismounting.

Chris, as an Aussie, I'd be curious about your opinion on the *Bushmaster Patrol vehicle.* They were lucky in developing a mine resistant vehicle in the late 90's (based on a South African design) that was optimised for the Australian outback and hot deserts, so it transitioned well to the Middle East. Also the U.S. army had a look at acquiring it for Iraq, took a few samples and then decided not to, but… then came up with something similar. But being Americans made it a lot bigger, a lot heavier and a lot more thirsty - the MRAP.
The two most popular MRAPs the USA bought where the M-ATV and the MaxxPro both ended up at around the same weight as the Bushmaster and similar engines and overall configurations, I know some variants of the Maxxpros could get to 35,000lbs when up armored but they redid the armor with a newer design and dropped them back down to 32,000lbs.

I remember the Stryker being implemented back in the mid 1990s to replace the Bradley which is very heavy and expensive. This was the vision of Gen. Eric Shinseki a Vietnam veteran Armor Officer who was Army Chief of Staff. Gen. Shinseki wanted an armored vehicle much lighter for mech infantry which can be far more deployable with different weapons systems on the same chassis. It has to be light and be carried into the C-17 and C-5 Galaxy for faster deployment. These planes could carry more Strykers than Bradleys. The same concept of the US Marines which uses the LAV 25 system. It was highly criticized in the Army's mech infantry community as having less armor. This was coming from the Gulf War One veterans. Iraq was different from the first Gulf War. Urban combat was more intense. My unit was attached to 3rd ACR for Tal Afar and Mosul which they had Bradleys and Strykers. Then 4th ID for Sadr City during late 2007-08. Both had RPG Cages wrapped around them when in combat. The Stryker guys love their vehicles because all of them claim that it was silent and more survivable than the Bradley. I have rode in a Bradley a few times and hate it because it was so loud like an M113. The Stryker guys love it when they can cruise fast and dismount and Hadji will never hear them. I have seen disabled Bradleys and Strykers they don't like nice if you get hit by Hadji RPGs if you are still inside. My unit had M1115 Up Armored HMMVs. We did cordons or dismounted before it got too tight for our gunners up top to have less movement to fire. Hadji no matter what always set up because he was always watching. Combat dismounted was always a surprise because we always had to go through a mouse trap and fight our way into it. That's the bad part of being the first squad in the first platoon moving forward. Hated life back then even with adrenaline rush. Still fucks with me in my dreams thinking about those times. Hadji sees you, Hadji lights you up.
I think that you missed a bunch of important points when comparing BTR to Stryker. First of all,while Stryker serves as an armored taxi for infantry squad and provides some fire support/overwatch,BTR is integrated in a different way. BTR crew members are considered a part of a squad,and in fact squad commander usually fights mounted. If he dismounts, his deputy is authorised to form a separate squad out of all of the BTRs within a platoon. So, unlike the US army,in russian mechanised forces,BTR usually works as either a third fireteam within a squad or as a separate armored/weapons squad within a platoon. Secondly,While US forces are organised around homogenous,independent brigades that are supposed to be deployed anywhere in the world and have a lot of vehicles that share same chassis,Russian combined arms forces are organised around ad-hoc tactical battalion groups. They usually consist of a single batallion reinforced with a company from an opposite arm of a combined arms force,and whatever artillery/support units they managed to muster. This:had 2 advatages:1)since you redeploy 1-2 batallions and reinforce them,you don't need to have an entire brigade standartised on a single chassis,2)you can mix-and match professional units with locally deployed conscrips filling in support/rear echelon roles,which saves on manpower. My point is,that when people compare Russian and Western equipment,they fail to take into account the differences in doctrine,which in turn are justified by political and geographical limitations. While management has changed since the times of USSR,geography didn't,so Russia has to fight exactly the same kind of war USSR did: large-scale conflicts on either open fields or hills intermixed with tons of small rivers close to their border. This reflects both in their operational deployment and tactical specs of their equipment. When your potential battlefields include Eastern Europe/Manchuria/Middle Asia,you'd want amphibious capacity/extra fuel/cross-country performance at the exchange of some infantry-carrying capacity,which won't be as useful in this kind of terrain anyway. You'd want want to have your close-combat element much more tightly integrated with their transports, you'd want to be able to effectively use large numbers of conscrips, since they are much cheaper to keep at a high combat readiness level that contracted troops along the huge Russian border,and you'd want to minimise the amount of soldiers you have to redeploy from the central parts of the country,considering the difficulty of transporting large ground force overland,with shitty and stretched out infrastructure to boot.

1 on 1, BTR vs. Stryker, the answer is whoever shoots first. Both have anti-tank guided missiles that can easily take the other out. Also, I'll be frank, Russia is just better at off-road vehicles because they have to be. Their vehicles can handle rough terrain better. The Stryker's off-road capability is not that great due to being too heavy for the wheel size and ground clearance.

The Stryker is a great vehicle..especially since they installed the double-V shaped hull to increase the survivability of under belly mine or IED strikes.
The original Canadian LAV prototype had air rams for the rear door. I remember the door dropped like a rocket. The troops all felt there would be more casualties from driving that door accidentally into people and objects that a slower alternative was better.

I was in a cv90 unit in the danish army. We had 4 cv9035dk for each platoon which consisted of 3 6 man squads and a platoon hq squad. Great vehicle with a ton of firepower.
If we're talking full spectrum operations, it's funny that it's assumed those F-35s will be available when the opposition has pretty darn excellent SAM systems... *cough* One of the main problems with the current US military is that it has had it so easy in terms of area denial. It can fly, steam, and go prettymuch wherever it wants. But once that CAS isn't there anymore. When your artillery starts getting counter-batteried and your radios no longer work due to ECM...
Yeah this completely ignores the fact that late 90’s Russian radar can detect and shoot down the f-35 at over 40km, and that the SU-57’s are basically more versatile f-22’s, designed with dealing with threats like the f-35 in mind.
@Luke L. I didn't say better, I said more versatile, and considering we stopped production of the f22, we can't field it in large numbers like other nations will be able to field the su57. Both of which could easily trash an f35. The truth is we only have air supremacy in places where there's no one to contest it; if you're designing a platform or creating a stratagem, that can't be part of it as even if it's possible, it definitively isn't a certainty.
@@kylecole7068 A-10 go brrt when on-station. A-10 is not organic firepower. A-10 took plenty of damage during Desert Storm (I worked hot pit refuel at KKMC and saw them taxi by while fueling F-16s). A-10 is fine against people without an air force and should be kept for a while but drones already do everything but brrrt (and most A-10 AFV kills were by Hellfires). For what vulnerable A-10 costs to deploy (not to mention training and maintaining aircrew and the rest of the stagnormous support tail for a squadron) the US could darken the skies with drones that loiter longer, have tiny radar sigs, require vastly less support etc. Much love for A-10 but it's survivable use case gets smaller every year. Russian Frogfoot is as good (except for lacking podded engines) and those are getting Stingered on the reg in Ukraine.
Before he retired my dad was on a team which reviewed the Stryker to be sure it met specs. At that time there was something wrong with the way the armor was attached and he could get the plates to fall off with a rock. He refused to sign off on it and some officer got really mad. My dad retired a year later and never got to see if it was sorted out well.
The key to success is remembering that the Stryker, like the M114, is an Infantry Carrier and not a Combat Fighting Vehicle .. being old school, I still prefer the 12-Man Squad over the 9-man Squad, but I love that our Stryker Brigades put 4 Strykers to a Platoon [36 Men] and not 3 [27 Men] .. and I love that they park and get out 1 away and not in the middle of the active battle field .. that's good military tactics .. let's hope it stays that way and we continue to protect our soldiers with sound military decisions .. our front line troops need to always remember and keep in their line of sight that armored vehicles only provide some protection - slightly better then what their wearing - but they don't stop everything ..
All right first of all, MST 3000 t-shirt... we are kindred spirits. At first when the Styrker was coming out I had my doubts but for insurgency operations, especially with the anti rpg cages they were gold. The ability to communicate, be quiet, and protection was very impressive for the mission at hand.

While the defense press was still on the fence, these guys were swearing that their new vehicle would change the way that the US Army operates. Now, their prophecy has come true!

To be fair the BTR series came out 40 years before the Striker. Soviet postwar doctrine emphasized having all their troops encased in armor and they had NBC protection. While US infantry were still moving around in exposed trucks and jeeps. Their reasoning was the high casualties inflicted by artillery fragments and small arms for units moving near the enemy. They probably learned similar lessons as shown in this US study history.amedd.army.mil/booksdocs/wwii/woundblstcs/chapter1.htm#table14 which lists artillery to be the cause of up to 70% of US casualties in WW2.
Yeah also the btr isn’t the only infantry transport the ruskies use, much more of their transports are tracked vehicles like the bmp’s and the new T-15. Btr’s aren’t really frontline combat vehicles anymore simply because they have so many better options.
I drove an M1113 in Germany when I was in the army. The ramp on that would lower slowly too. It was controlled by a steel cable about 1/3 inch thick. We had trouble with that cable stretching so much that it couldn't bring the ramp up enough to fit securely in back. One thing that caused this was that soldiers on top of the apc would jump off the top onto the lowering ramp. I had to practically throw a fit to get them to stop doing that. Surely it is not too great an engineering problem to produce a ramp cable that doesn't stretch like that.
Automatic cable slack adjusters go back to the earliest car and truck parking brakes and are also used on aircraft flight controls. Shit's easy to fix if engineers keep a real mechanic on staff to keep thing real...

I used to haul axles, transmission and suspension parts from the General Dynamics in London Ontario to Anniston Alabama back on 2003 to 2004. Parts were shipped from there to Iraq. Cool vehicle. Dont know if they still make em there but you could seem them rolling around the roads by the plant in London.
I recently transferred to a Stryker Unit. Definitely have its pros and cons in my opinion. You hit the nail on most of them. The unit cohesion definitely a bonus. But the modified variants like the one I ride is only able to accommodate 4 soldiers including driver and VC.
Strykers are great.... they keep my mechanics and technicians occupied, my OR rate at a nice svelte mid-winters temperature, and they look really cool driving down the road behind your Camry. And have to include one of my favorite quotes: “You don’t have to be faster than the Bear, just faster than your friend.”

You have to love the LAV III, I have used all LAV series, and from an infantry officer's point of view WOW is it incredibly flexible and effective. The LAV series I is still in service in Africa, Canada donated all the LAV I series of vehicles to the African Union peacekeeping forces. The Grizzly, Bison, and Buffalo were incredible. When the initial LAV II vehicle's came out they were not much of generational technology leap. When we developed the LAV III series, everyone loved them. The one irritating point was the loss of the propeller for enhanced fording, which was on the LAV I. I don't know if the Stryker LAV III's incorporated it, please let me kniw The LAV III was incredibly effective in a Afghanistan, this beauty saved many lives there, which is why our soldiers love them. Oh yes another miss in the LAV III series. The LAV I had the armoured recconaisance variant called the Cougar which had the wonderful British 76mm main gun. Unfortunately they did not continue the Cougar series. There is the 105mm variant with the British main gun again, which is excellent, but serves a different tactical role. The armoured recconaisance 76mm cougar was really quite effective. I believe that when the US deployed their Stryker brigades to Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, the planners who envisioned the Stryker concept over a decade before were totally vindicated in their strategic concept, as shown by the flexibility of Stryker brigades. The US army did a fantastic job exploiting the enemies weaknesses, especially mobility, by using the mobility and firepower of the LAV's to their tactical advantage. I think they were deployed into Syria, but I am not sure, but please correct me if I am wrong. Canadians are proud of our engineering and design capabilities. We are pleased that our CLOSEST ally and neighbour has adopted Canadian technology and improved on it, just like Canada has done so with American technology which we purchased from you. Now Canada is incorporating a lot of your changes and enhancements into the updates of our LAV's. This is proof of the strength of our partnership as neighbours and friends. Please put pressure on your government, to stop treating Canada your closet ally as an enemy, we are your friend and largest trading partner. Our mutual enemies are Russia, North Korea and to some degree China. Our bilateral trading partnership is the largest such trade partnership. I have critiqued your channel before, but I assure you it is because I enjoy your channel and I respect your excellent work. Please tolerate my rant here, I do it with the best of intentions between friends. The Canadians donated 100 Griz, & 5 ''Husky'' recovery to African Union formations sent to Dafur and the Sudan in 2005. I'm going to really try and be kind here. So I will just refer you, with respect, to RMC professor Sean Maloney's 1997 book, 'War without Battles'. There, you will find that those,195 built ''wonderful 76mm'' Cougars, (mit propellers) were nothing less than a freaking cheap Swiss MOWAG PIRANA copy...a 'thin tin skin' tank trainer....that the then government attempted to pass off as the perfect, viable replacement until the new ''Mobile Command'' went ''full -hog'' on Scorpians to replace all those 350 Centurion MBTs that Canada badly needed to replace....this?... all right after Ottawa literally ripped the living gutz out of the whole forces...including the once 'elite' 6,500 4th CDN Mech Bde of the British Army of the Rhine, relegated into a castrated rear echelon oblivion in the Schwarzwald.....just months after the WARPAC whacked the Czech uprising in Aug, 68.

Big👍for going over Stryker history and crediting General Shinseki, who was Army chief of staff then, for Stryker and forming Brigade Combat Team concept. I remember there was lot of push back from Armor Corp community in 90's.
Communications is key - king even. In the early part of WW2 the germans and BEF didn't have better equipment in many ways than other forces, but things like the three man turreted tanks with radio operators and widespread use of radios as well as having mobile elements with good communications between elements (air, infantry, armour, artillery) were "force multipliers". Later in the war allied forces used similar advantages in communication to great effect.
Years ago one of my new airmen asked me if we were safe at our base. I pointed out that there were at least 10 Strykers helping to guard us...I wasn't worried at all. Definitely safer than St Louis on a Saturday night.
Please look at the Millennium Challenge 2002 War Games and how that relates to the sale of the Stryker. Really cool story! This old marine general defeated an entire carrier strike group and was kicked out of the war room!
@@johnharker7194 It's not, for instance, the guy used "runners" who mysteriously traveled at the speed of light (aka he cheated the simulation so signals intelligence couldn't intercept his orders). There were a few other cheesy moves like sending fast attack boats (Iranian speed boats) armed with capital ship killing cruise missiles (probably iranian copies of the Moskit or Thermit missile) which are the fucking size of these speed boats and had them rush out from the coast and ambush the carrier group. Obviously, if the Iranians can cheat the laws of physics they'd win like this guy, not to mention knowing the intricacies of our doctrine in the same way an active duty Marine general does would help them a lot too. The guy had a serious chip on his shoulder, he went way out of the bounds of the simulation to 'win' then leaked his version of events to the press when the brass came down on his ass for it.

Strykers are some of the best vehicles I got to use. And being in RC south it was essential to put mine rollers on the front, have a v shaped hull, and be able to dismount into the tracks of the vehicle
As a striker driver I love the capability of its weapons systems and troop support but the vehicle has one fatal flaw in order to be able to cross rough terrain you have to raise the hull higher which means easier to roll over

The main advantage of a BTR it's reliability. When I've served, for a time I was in a support platoon of armoured vehicles. I never heard or experienced any issue with them. They were like AK's. Nothing fancy or extraordinary, they just worked. Not like raytracing. 😄

This is the first time I heard praise of Stryker vehicles. A lot of troops complain that Strykers breakdown too often and don’t handle challenging terrain as well to be reliable in combat.

I had a whole part talking about the MGS Stryker version but I cut it out to keep the video from getting too long and I felt like that's not really a part of the troop transport piece of the puzzle , it was meant originally to be the anti-armor capability but they found it wasn't great for that role. could do a whole separate video on that one
There is a platoon of about 6-9 of them in the recon squadron along with 9-12 atgm carriers, really not too significant in firepower against a mechanized enemy.
2-14 Cav (RSTA) 1st BDE (Stryker) 25th ID Ft Lewis, 2002-2005 Iraq 2004-2005. We loved our RECCE Strykers they served us well in Mosul, Tal Afar & Rawa.
As a stryker driver in the 56th 1/112th infantry i love the platform when they are well maintained but we are still using the first gen in the Pa guard
I slept in the driver's seat for 10 days, and ate MREs the whole time. Yes it's as appetizing as it sounds, we got mail twice at our retrans site and the VC got pepperoni cheese and crackers. I won't say what kind of favors i did for some of that POG bait but it was worth it.
I worked with the 2nd Infantry Stryker Brigade as a combat engineer. These vehicles are great but my national guard unit was rolling around in old dump trucks and unarmored hmmwv's. Of course this was 2004.

Our dismount commander in the back can have coms with the crew commander up top through MBITR but the dismount commanders is almost always more mature than the rest of us scumbags and would almost always not abuse that power.
Great video, brother! I wish we would've had Stryker's when I was in the Army, back in 1980-84! I was leg - infantry, in 2nd Infantry.Korea. Scout Platoon in 9th Infantry, Fort Lewis, WA. And mechanized infantry, with 3rd Infantry Division,.in Aschaffenburg, West Germany! In Scout Plt we ran around in the old jeeps, like in "Rat Patrol" and in Germany we had the M113 Armored Personnel Carrier! They talked about the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, but didn't get them until after I ETSed!! Anyway, I love your videos! Keep up the good work!
You really don’t, they’re unreliable and with all the proper kit actually not much faster than Bradley’s or 113’s. They also have far less armor and smaller armaments. At least dismounted you can be less of a target.
I too always wonder why military vehicles don’t have a few hundred dollars worth of safety upgrades I.e. the cameras with monitors you mentioned, or an encrypted little silent drone that you can launch from the vehicle to do surveillance
Slow opening ramp suggests a hefty closing mechanism. I don’t know if it’s hydraulic or just very high torque, but that door isn’t going to be pried open with a simple crowbar. The strength of the closing mechanism is probably needed to move the armored ramp. As for the lack of cameras, that would mean putting more holes in the armor, which weakens it. Plus it’s just one more thing to power.

My Dad was on the Stryker development team at Aberdeen Proving Ground. He said initially it was supposed to be narrow enough for the streets overseas and be used in urban combat. But, by the time they were done making changes it was way too big for that.
I agree that the Russian or Chinese versions are not better. It is highly unlikely that either nation put the time and effort into testing that went into the Stryker. They ran those things all day every day in terrible terrain just trying to get something to fail. When something failed the part was removed and how many hours in what terrain it took the part to fail was cataloged. If failures repeated the part was redesigned and the process started all over again.

Ironically they still don't use it much, during both Chechen wars they'd always try to build pontoon bridges because Russian doctrine prefers to have MBTs supporting IFVs even against an entirely infantry based force. Maybe they've unfucked themselves since then (one would hope) but outside of recon the odds are they will never cross a river without a bridge to bring actual tanks along.
@@MrMattumbo I always found the concept of amphib vehicles kinda funny, they still need to stop and wait on the other side for the bridge to be built, for the supply trucks and fuel trucks. Probably useful for securing the far side for the bridge I guess.

The Canadian LAV's have something called a CSAM in the crew compartment. Crew Situational Awareness Monitor. They can see everything the turret is pointing at. In colour, IR or in thermal simply by the push of a button. We still post air sentries in the side hatches that are up-armoured, but the CSAM is amazing because the crew can actually see what the objective looks like in real time before dismounting.
Stryker has the same thing too. You can see what the gunner is pointing at or what the driver is.

Chris, as an Aussie, I'd be curious about your opinion on the *Bushmaster Patrol vehicle.*
They were lucky in developing a mine resistant vehicle in the late 90's (based on a South African design) that was optimised for the Australian outback and hot deserts, so it transitioned well to the Middle East.
Also the U.S. army had a look at acquiring it for Iraq, took a few samples and then decided not to, but… then came up with something similar.
But being Americans made it a lot bigger, a lot heavier and a lot more thirsty - the MRAP.

The two most popular MRAPs the USA bought where the M-ATV and the MaxxPro both ended up at around the same weight as the Bushmaster and similar engines and overall configurations, I know some variants of the Maxxpros could get to 35,000lbs when up armored but they redid the armor with a newer design and dropped them back down to 32,000lbs.
I was a 12B, we also had the Husky and Buffalo, which were designed in South Africa to deal with all of their mines.

I remember the Stryker being implemented back in the mid 1990s to replace the Bradley which is very heavy and expensive. This was the vision of Gen. Eric Shinseki a Vietnam veteran Armor Officer who was Army Chief of Staff. Gen. Shinseki wanted an armored vehicle much lighter for mech infantry which can be far more deployable with different weapons systems on the same chassis. It has to be light and be carried into the C-17 and C-5 Galaxy for faster deployment. These planes could carry more Strykers than Bradleys. The same concept of the US Marines which uses the LAV 25 system. It was highly criticized in the Army's mech infantry community as having less armor. This was coming from the Gulf War One veterans. Iraq was different from the first Gulf War. Urban combat was more intense. My unit was attached to 3rd ACR for Tal Afar and Mosul which they had Bradleys and Strykers. Then 4th ID for Sadr City during late 2007-08. Both had RPG Cages wrapped around them when in combat. The Stryker guys love their vehicles because all of them claim that it was silent and more survivable than the Bradley. I have rode in a Bradley a few times and hate it because it was so loud like an M113. The Stryker guys love it when they can cruise fast and dismount and Hadji will never hear them. I have seen disabled Bradleys and Strykers they don't like nice if you get hit by Hadji RPGs if you are still inside. My unit had M1115 Up Armored HMMVs. We did cordons or dismounted before it got too tight for our gunners up top to have less movement to fire. Hadji no matter what always set up because he was always watching. Combat dismounted was always a surprise because we always had to go through a mouse trap and fight our way into it. That's the bad part of being the first squad in the first platoon moving forward. Hated life back then even with adrenaline rush. Still fucks with me in my dreams thinking about those times. Hadji sees you, Hadji lights you up.

I think that you missed a bunch of important points when comparing BTR to Stryker. First of all,while Stryker serves as an armored taxi for infantry squad and provides some fire support/overwatch,BTR is integrated in a different way. BTR crew members are considered a part of a squad,and in fact squad commander usually fights mounted. If he dismounts, his deputy is authorised to form a separate squad out of all of the BTRs within a platoon. So, unlike the US army,in russian mechanised forces,BTR usually works as either a third fireteam within a squad or as a separate armored/weapons squad within a platoon. Secondly,While US forces are organised around homogenous,independent brigades that are supposed to be deployed anywhere in the world and have a lot of vehicles that share same chassis,Russian combined arms forces are organised around ad-hoc tactical battalion groups. They usually consist of a single batallion reinforced with a company from an opposite arm of a combined arms force,and whatever artillery/support units they managed to muster. This:had 2 advatages:1)since you redeploy 1-2 batallions and reinforce them,you don't need to have an entire brigade standartised on a single chassis,2)you can mix-and match professional units with locally deployed conscrips filling in support/rear echelon roles,which saves on manpower. My point is,that when people compare Russian and Western equipment,they fail to take into account the differences in doctrine,which in turn are justified by political and geographical limitations. While management has changed since the times of USSR,geography didn't,so Russia has to fight exactly the same kind of war USSR did: large-scale conflicts on either open fields or hills intermixed with tons of small rivers close to their border. This reflects both in their operational deployment and tactical specs of their equipment. When your potential battlefields include Eastern Europe/Manchuria/Middle Asia,you'd want amphibious capacity/extra fuel/cross-country performance at the exchange of some infantry-carrying capacity,which won't be as useful in this kind of terrain anyway. You'd want want to have your close-combat element much more tightly integrated with their transports, you'd want to be able to effectively use large numbers of conscrips, since they are much cheaper to keep at a high combat readiness level that contracted troops along the huge Russian border,and you'd want to minimise the amount of soldiers you have to redeploy from the central parts of the country,considering the difficulty of transporting large ground force overland,with shitty and stretched out infrastructure to boot.

1 on 1, BTR vs. Stryker, the answer is whoever shoots first. Both have anti-tank guided missiles that can easily take the other out. Also, I'll be frank, Russia is just better at off-road vehicles because they have to be. Their vehicles can handle rough terrain better. The Stryker's off-road capability is not that great due to being too heavy for the wheel size and ground clearance.

The original Canadian LAV prototype had air rams for the rear door. I remember the door dropped like a rocket. The troops all felt there would be more casualties from driving that door accidentally into people and objects that a slower alternative was better.

I was in a cv90 unit in the danish army. We had 4 cv9035dk for each platoon which consisted of 3 6 man squads and a platoon hq squad. Great vehicle with a ton of firepower.

One of the main problems with the current US military is that it has had it so easy in terms of area denial. It can fly, steam, and go prettymuch wherever it wants. But once that CAS isn't there anymore. When your artillery starts getting counter-batteried and your radios no longer work due to ECM...
Yeah this completely ignores the fact that late 90’s Russian radar can detect and shoot down the f-35 at over 40km, and that the SU-57’s are basically more versatile f-22’s, designed with dealing with threats like the f-35 in mind.

@Luke L. I didn't say better, I said more versatile, and considering we stopped production of the f22, we can't field it in large numbers like other nations will be able to field the su57. Both of which could easily trash an f35. The truth is we only have air supremacy in places where there's no one to contest it; if you're designing a platform or creating a stratagem, that can't be part of it as even if it's possible, it definitively isn't a certainty.

@@kylecole7068 A-10 go brrt when on-station. A-10 is not organic firepower. A-10 took plenty of damage during Desert Storm (I worked hot pit refuel at KKMC and saw them taxi by while fueling F-16s). A-10 is fine against people without an air force and should be kept for a while but drones already do everything but brrrt (and most A-10 AFV kills were by Hellfires). For what vulnerable A-10 costs to deploy (not to mention training and maintaining aircrew and the rest of the stagnormous support tail for a squadron) the US could darken the skies with drones that loiter longer, have tiny radar sigs, require vastly less support etc. Much love for A-10 but it's survivable use case gets smaller every year. Russian Frogfoot is as good (except for lacking podded engines) and those are getting Stingered on the reg in Ukraine.

Before he retired my dad was on a team which reviewed the Stryker to be sure it met specs. At that time there was something wrong with the way the armor was attached and he could get the plates to fall off with a rock. He refused to sign off on it and some officer got really mad. My dad retired a year later and never got to see if it was sorted out well.
The key to success is remembering that the Stryker, like the M114, is an Infantry Carrier and not a Combat Fighting Vehicle .. being old school, I still prefer the 12-Man Squad over the 9-man Squad, but I love that our Stryker Brigades put 4 Strykers to a Platoon [36 Men] and not 3 [27 Men] .. and I love that they park and get out 1 away and not in the middle of the active battle field .. that's good military tactics .. let's hope it stays that way and we continue to protect our soldiers with sound military decisions .. our front line troops need to always remember and keep in their line of sight that armored vehicles only provide some protection - slightly better then what their wearing - but they don't stop everything ..

At first when the Styrker was coming out I had my doubts but for insurgency operations, especially with the anti rpg cages they were gold. While the defense press was still on the fence, these guys were swearing that their new vehicle would change the way that the US Army operates. Now, their prophecy has come true!

To be fair the BTR series came out 40 years before the Striker. Soviet postwar doctrine emphasized having all their troops encased in armor and they had NBC protection. While US infantry were still moving around in exposed trucks and jeeps. Their reasoning was the high casualties inflicted by artillery fragments and small arms for units moving near the enemy. They probably learned similar lessons as shown in this US study history.amedd.army.mil/booksdocs/wwii/woundblstcs/chapter1.htm#table14 which lists artillery to be the cause of up to 70% of US casualties in WW2.

Yeah also the btr isn’t the only infantry transport the ruskies use, much more of their transports are tracked vehicles like the bmp’s and the new T-15. Btr’s aren’t really frontline combat vehicles anymore simply because they have so many better options.

I drove an M1113 in Germany when I was in the army. The ramp on that would lower slowly too. It was controlled by a steel cable about 1/3 inch thick. We had trouble with that cable stretching so much that it couldn't bring the ramp up enough to fit securely in back. One thing that caused this was that soldiers on top of the apc would jump off the top onto the lowering ramp. I had to practically throw a fit to get them to stop doing that. Surely it is not too great an engineering problem to produce a ramp cable that doesn't stretch like that.
Automatic cable slack adjusters go back to the earliest car and truck parking brakes and are also used on aircraft flight controls. Shit's easy to fix if engineers keep a real mechanic on staff to keep thing real...

I was most impressed by a striker when 1 drove on a 500 lb IED was blow up and flipped over and the crew had no serious long-term injuries.
I used to haul axles, transmission and suspension parts from the General Dynamics in London Ontario to Anniston Alabama back on 2003 to 2004. Parts were shipped from there to Iraq. Cool vehicle. Dont know if they still make em there but you could seem them rolling around the roads by the plant in London.

I recently transferred to a Stryker Unit. Definitely have its pros and cons in my opinion. You hit the nail on most of them. The unit cohesion definitely a bonus. But the modified variants like the one I ride is only able to accommodate 4 soldiers including driver and VC.
Strykers are great.... they keep my mechanics and technicians occupied, my OR rate at a nice svelte mid-winters temperature, and they look really cool driving down the road behind your Camry. And have to include one of my favorite quotes: “You don’t have to be faster than the Bear, just faster than your friend.”

You have to love the LAV III, I have used all LAV series, and from an infantry officer's point of view WOW is it incredibly flexible and effective. The LAV series I is still in service in Africa, Canada donated all the LAV I series of vehicles to the African Union peacekeeping forces. The Grizzly, Bison, and Buffalo were incredible. When the initial LAV II vehicle's came out they were not much of generational technology leap. When we developed the LAV III series, everyone loved them. The one irritating point was the loss of the propeller for enhanced fording, which was on the LAV I. I don't know if the Stryker LAV III's incorporated it, please let me kniw The LAV III was incredibly effective in a Afghanistan, this beauty saved many lives there, which is why our soldiers love them. Oh yes another miss in the LAV III series. The LAV I had the armoured recconaisance variant called the Cougar which had the wonderful British 76mm main gun. Unfortunately they did not continue the Cougar series. There is the 105mm variant with the British main gun again, which is excellent, but serves a different tactical role. The armoured recconaisance 76mm cougar was really quite effective. I believe that when the US deployed their Stryker brigades to Iraq, Afghanistan and Syria, the planners who envisioned the Stryker concept over a decade before were totally vindicated in their strategic concept, as shown by the flexibility of Stryker brigades. The US army did a fantastic job exploiting the enemies weaknesses, especially mobility, by using the mobility and firepower of the LAV's to their tactical advantage. I think they were deployed into Syria, but I am not sure, but please correct me if I am wrong. Canadians are proud of our engineering and design capabilities. We are pleased that our CLOSEST ally and neighbour has adopted Canadian technology and improved on it, just like Canada has done so with American technology which we purchased from you. Now Canada is incorporating a lot of your changes and enhancements into the updates of our LAV's. This is proof of the strength of our partnership as neighbours and friends. Please put pressure on your government, to stop treating Canada your closet ally as an enemy, we are your friend and largest trading partner. Our mutual enemies are Russia, North Korea and to some degree China. Our bilateral trading partnership is the largest such trade partnership. I have critiqued your channel before, but I assure you it is because I enjoy your channel and I respect your excellent work. Please tolerate my rant here, I do it with the best of intentions between friends. Keep it up, I am eager for more content, I would like more of your own personal military experiences integrated in the videos (A not so subtle hint). Cheers from Canada.

I'm an old M1 tanker who also spent some time in the aluminum coffin that was the M113. You make a very strong case for the striker and I loved your comments about the direction of the army (follow the money). Well done, keep them coming!

Big👍for going over Stryker history and crediting General Shinseki, who was Army chief of staff then, for Stryker and forming Brigade Combat Team concept. I remember there was lot of push back from Armor Corp community in 90's.

Communications is key - king even. In the early part of WW2 the germans and BEF didn't have better equipment in many ways than other forces, but things like the three man turreted tanks with radio operators and widespread use of radios as well as having mobile elements with good communications between elements (air, infantry, armour, artillery) were "force multipliers". Later in the war allied forces used similar advantages in communication to great effect.
Last I checked rivers are pretty important terrain features...just putting that out there.

Got a few “taxi” rides in Strykers whilst on OIF3. Felt like a Caddy compared to an M113.
Years ago one of my new airmen asked me if we were safe at our base. I pointed out that there were at least 10 Strykers helping to guard us...I wasn't worried at all. Definitely safer than St Louis on a Saturday night.

@@johnharker7194 It's not, for instance, the guy used "runners" who mysteriously traveled at the speed of light (aka he cheated the simulation so signals intelligence couldn't intercept his orders). There were a few other cheesy moves like sending fast attack boats (Iranian speed boats) armed with capital ship killing cruise missiles (probably iranian copies of the Moskit or Thermit missile) which are the fucking size of these speed boats and had them rush out from the coast and ambush the carrier group.
Obviously, if the Iranians can cheat the laws of physics they'd win like this guy, not to mention knowing the intricacies of our doctrine in the same way an active duty Marine general does would help them a lot too. The guy had a serious chip on his shoulder, he went way out of the bounds of the simulation to 'win' then leaked his version of events to the press when the brass came down on his ass for it.

Strykers are some of the best vehicles I got to use. And being in RC south it was essential to put mine rollers on the front, have a v shaped hull, and be able to dismount into the tracks of the vehicle

As a striker driver I love the capability of its weapons systems and troop support but the vehicle has one fatal flaw in order to be able to cross rough terrain you have to raise the hull higher which means easier to roll over
My favourite APCs are Stryker (.50 BMG) , GTK Boxer (.50 BMG) and his predecessor Fuchs
You definitely need some closing catchphrase or a short summary at the end. I know, its a race to that sweet 10 minute mark for the algorithm, but still, these videos end way too abruptly tbh

I was trying to end all the videos on a dumb joke because I noticed people were tuning out towards the end when I did like a wrap up commentary. i'll try out the wrap up approach next time. I'm usually cutting these down from like the original 20 minutes long version because I feel they're too long sometimes.
Im mechanized infantryman in finnish reserve. I met with some american cavalry dudes we had fun time comparing stryker to our cv9030. I recomend checking it out
The main advantage of a BTR it's reliability. When I've served, for a time I was in a support platoon of armoured vehicles. I never heard or experienced any issue with them. They were like AK's. Nothing fancy or extraordinary, they just worked. Not like raytracing. 😄
That was 5 months ago. Funny the current conflict in Ukraine has proven this wrong beyond any doubt.

This is the first time I heard praise of Stryker vehicles. A lot of troops complain that Strykers breakdown too often and don’t handle challenging terrain as well to be reliable in combat.

I had a whole part talking about the MGS Stryker version but I cut it out to keep the video from getting too long and I felt like that's not really a part of the troop transport piece of the puzzle , it was meant originally to be the anti-armor capability but they found it wasn't great for that role. could do a whole separate video on that one

There is a platoon of about 6-9 of them in the recon squadron along with 9-12 atgm carriers, really not too significant in firepower against a mechanized enemy.
Yes but they’re few and far between, I think there’s like 4 or 8 of them for a brigade, same with the tow version. That’s not a lot for 4000 dudes.
I love the Stryker. I was a MP on Camp Stryker in Iraq in 06 and true to its name the Strykers were there. Loved working with those guys

As a stryker driver in the 56th 1/112th infantry i love the platform when they are well maintained but we are still using the first gen in the Pa guard
I slept in the driver's seat for 10 days, and ate MREs the whole time. Yes it's as appetizing as it sounds, we got mail twice at our retrans site and the VC got pepperoni cheese and crackers. I won't say what kind of favors i did for some of that POG bait but it was worth it.
I worked with the 2nd Infantry Stryker Brigade as a combat engineer. These vehicles are great but my national guard unit was rolling around in old dump trucks and unarmored hmmwv's. Of course this was 2004.

Ex-New Zealand Infantry here, our version, the LAV 3, has a screen in the back where us dismounts can see what the gunner can see.
Just what the gunner needs...a half dozen back seat advisors yelling “shoot that one!” & “No! MY left, not your left!”
Likydsplit hahaha. I wish. But unfortunately for us backseat drivers, we don’t have the means to talk to the gunner. Our dismount commander in the back can have coms with the crew commander up top through MBITR but the dismount commanders is almost always more mature than the rest of us scumbags and would almost always not abuse that power.
Great video, brother! I wish we would've had Stryker's when I was in the Army, back in 1980-84! I was leg - infantry, in 2nd Infantry.Korea. Scout Platoon in 9th Infantry, Fort Lewis, WA. And mechanized infantry, with 3rd Infantry Division,.in Aschaffenburg, West Germany! In Scout Plt we ran around in the old jeeps, like in "Rat Patrol" and in Germany we had the M113 Armored Personnel Carrier! They talked about the Bradley Fighting Vehicle, but didn't get them until after I ETSed!! Anyway, I love your videos! Keep up the good work!
You really don’t, they’re unreliable and with all the proper kit actually not much faster than Bradley’s or 113’s. They also have far less armor and smaller armaments. At least dismounted you can be less of a target.
I too always wonder why military vehicles don’t have a few hundred dollars worth of safety upgrades I.e. the cameras with monitors you mentioned, or an encrypted little silent drone that you can launch from the vehicle to do surveillance
Slow opening ramp suggests a hefty closing mechanism. I don’t know if it’s hydraulic or just very high torque, but that door isn’t going to be pried open with a simple crowbar. The strength of the closing mechanism is probably needed to move the armored ramp.
As for the lack of cameras, that would mean putting more holes in the armor, which weakens it. Plus it’s just one more thing to power.
