Weaning my baby from breastfeeding (What I did + how to do it!)

- I just stopped breastfeeding my son when he was 12 months old to give myself a break from nursing because I am pregnant and will be nursing a newborn again beginning in November. Here is a video about how I weaned and what that felt like for us.

I nursed my daughter until she was almost two years old and I breastfed my son until last month when he was just over a month old. I was going to wean him during the week of his first birthday but general advice given said not to wean a baby if they are teething or experiencing a sleep regression .. and just my luck Wilson got his first 4 teeth and went through a sleep regression all at the same time. So weaning was postponed a week or two, but thankfully it went way better than I expected. We began the weaning process during the daytime by offering regular milk and water instead of breastmilk. We also offered a lot of food at meal times to ensure baby was full. Once my son got the hang of daytime naps without nursing before or after then I progressed to weaning him in the evening. That part was a little harder and he cried a bit when he first went down for bed, but it was brief and within a couple days he was comfortable with snuggles and a bottle of milk instead of breastfeeding. I think I was more nervous about it all than he was, he was very adaptable and overall handled weaning really well. Once it was said and done I felt so relieved. I hear often that once women stop nursing they feel more like themselves, I would say that is true for me too. I am so thankful I was able to breastfeed but I am also seriously thankful to have a break from breastfeeding before baby number 3 comes on the scene.
I wish you all the best and send so much love to you who are in the weaning process with your babe. I believe in you. Thank you for watching!

Finallyyyyyyyyyy
Hi! So fun to watch you! I lost my first child baby Isaac to stillbirth at 39 weeks this past May. Even though its hard to watch mom's be mom's, I still enjoy watching you share your experiences while I wait to try again for baby #2 this upcoming May. I am trying so hard to stay positive and your videos are very uplifting to me. Thank you!
So sorry for your lost Best wishes for You !!
Lost my first to stillborn 2 years ago also, and now have a baby boy who turned one last month. I’m here to tell you it does get easier.. I promise. ❤️ Isaac will always be your baby, but once you have your rainbow baby, it will bring your heart so much healing. Praying for you mama❤️
Sending you love, so sorry for your loss! Wish you the best of luck!
I'm really sorry for your loss! I wish you all the best!
I’m so sorry to read about your loss 😢 sending you love and wishing you the best in the future. ❤️
I loved how you said it makes you feel more like yourself again!! I’ll look forward to that, I’ve been nursing 5 years 2 months straight, no breaks, between my two daughters. Back to back! My younger one is 3 and I feel partially ready but also know it’ll be a struggle... can’t believe I don’t feel totally ready at this point! My first weaned easily after age two when she saw that she had a newborn baby sister who needed it more. Thanks for sharing your experiences!
This is very timely for me because my daughter is turning 9 months this week and boy that 1 year weaning date is in sight finally!!!
How did it go? We are at the same stage I’m so nervous
My first one is due 12/27. I'm a wreck and feeling really lonely. So nervous about not being a good parent. Stumbled upon your videos and instantly subscribed. I love your honesty, positivist, and vulnerability.
Lol I was just talking to another mom friend and we agreed that babies are much easier than we thought. Haha I mean hard cuz you're exhausted but it really is just diaper, feed, nap repeat 😂 hope it's been easy going for you so far and congrats!
So glad you posted this video! My baby turns one in March and our breastfeeding journey has been ROUGH, I hate to say I've been counting down the days but it hasn't been the magical experience I've heard about. I feel blessed I've been able to nurse her though, I wasn't able to at all with my first so this time around I was determined!
Hello! I had to stop the video and tell you how much I appreciate your way of approaching this motherhood thing. I have an 11 months old boy (so our boys could play if the ocean and some countries would not be between us).
You are amazing! And oh, the courage to have more children, the courage of exposing yourself online, the beauty, love and compassion!
Thank you!
“For what felt like 600 years” 😂 the accuracy!! Currently 18 months EBF and hoping for an end date in the very near future 😩
This is my current situation 😭 just checking in on you!
are you still going? my daughter is 23 months, contact naps and cosleeps, and I want to quit so bad 😅😩
@@hllymchllhave you weaned your baby? If so how?
@@TiffanyChantee yes!!! I found out I was pregnant and had nursing aversions anyway. I just wanted to make it to two years so I was fine quitting. we night weaned which was easier than I thought. first night she was upset for less than an hour, I just sang her songs to sleep. next night 15 mins. next night she was totally night weaned. never woke up at night again. then maybe a week or so later, I started day weaning. I nursed her and was like okay that's the last time and she was fine. she was only nursing maybe once a day at that point though, and I know she didn't need the comfort or nutrients over night or during the day anymore so I didn't feel bad. we coslept for another year and just moved her to her own room at 3.5 years.
I thought she'd never stop nursing and then it ended up being so easy. depending on your kids age, you don't have to feel bad about withholding milk. obviously I wouldn't wean younger than 15-18 months personally, but that's just my opinion. just distract and comfort another way but don't give in because they will just know they have to cry and you'll do it. if you don't they learn super quick.
Your personality and vulnerability is amazing!! Keep killing it momma!
"My brain is melting out of my head. If you're pregnant you might understand." Girl. Yes.
So excited to see your journey with the new baby! I'm also due in November but with my first 🥰
Well if this isn't just the most warming and wonderful channel! I'm so glad I found it today!
I’m due in March w my first baby and your videos help give me confidence ❤️
So excited for new baby....im due on November 28th with my first... a baby girl 💕
I just weaned our one year old also!! This was our 4th and you have NO idea how excited how was to be done nursing even though I LOVED nursing them all BUT I had such hard times nursing them all!
Weaning for me took a while, because I didn't want to stop, breastfeeding helped us both
My son is 11 months now and I am ready to start weaning. I feel like it is going to go extremely slow because my son is teething and we’re still going through a sleep regression so nursing nights and mornings are so helpful still 😓😌 hopefully soon I can drop another feeding. Loved this topic, super helpful!! 👍💛
Thanks for being honest and yourself. I appreciate the not perfect and real moming perspective. I’ve been feeling like I don’t know what to do and I don’t know who to ask, so thanks :)
Omg this is the most timely video 🥰 thank you thank you!! I was pregnant when you were pregnant last time! You talked me into doing a natural birth! It was amazing! Now I’m quarantined pregnant as well with a 9 month old and need to wean before baby comes in March!!! I’ve been sooo stressed about this process! I haven’t even watched the video yet but I hope you talk a little bit about tips on breastfeeding while pregnant. It’s certainly been trying! Again thank you for your post! Can’t wait to have more babies! Best of luck!
Her videos have made me consider natural birth! I’m so afraid of the pain though!!
I love how real you are, but so positive at the same time.
Wow my baby is 15 months now and im so sad thinking about weaning her but its time for me but I've been so emotional that I don't want to go thru it but this video just gave me a big Boost of confidence. Thank you for your openness and honesty about this i feel like my feelings are validated (:
My daughter is turning two and I have no idea how to wean her, fingers crossed we can be breastfeeding free in 2021!
This is a little.old but im in that boat now🤣 how did it go, how did you do it?
@@akbelb8165 we are done with BF actually, she last nursed six months ago
@@erinrohmanred i was wondering how you stopped the.night feeds mainly as i have managed to cut out morning and afternoon
I’m in the same boat. Did either of you give the baby breastmilk in a bottle in order to wean? I’m hoping there’s another way as I hate pumping :(
@@surabhibhate7685 i also hate pumping and havent done it once during my 2 years of breastfeeding. I have stopped my morning and naptime feeds and any extra of course. Night i still do and midnight if he wakes up once. I.am not gonna use a bottle he wont drink from it anyway. Its all about your scent and skin to skin i think
I freakin' love you Jess! You're awesome, and doing so great. I love your videos, and really appreciate feeling like I have a girlfriend during this difficult time of covid and social distancing. I'm a 28 year old with no kids, but I've had baby fever since I was like... 8 years old ('no joke I thought I would DIE if I didn't get a baby born doll for Christmas). I have also worked as a nanny for a long time, and feel like I've had some mommy experience. Obviously it's different when it's someone else's child, but you really become so attached when caring for them full-time. Anyways, even though I'm not currently raising any children I still love watching your videos because of just how sweet, funny, and down to earth you are! Thank you for putting yourself out there, and making consistent content ❤️❤️❤️ You rock!
Has everyone ever told you how much you look Jessica Alba?! Maybe I'm crazy but I think you both look so alike💙
My baby boy is 3 days old now and I’m binge watching baby videos while I’m nursing and not getting any sleep. 🤣😩😁 I love my baby so much and my 5 yr old daughter loves him too. Thank you for your videos.
Im working up the courage to start weaning my son who turned 1 two weeks ago. I’m hoping the transition goes smoothly.
I have been nursing my daughter for over two years and now I am tandem breastfeeding her with my 7 month old. I plan to wean them both after my son turn 1 but I STILL feel like I'm gonna miss it. Don't get me wrong I am definitely preparing and I will be glad when I finally do, but it will definitely be bittersweet for me.
November babies are the cutest, I wish you November 26th
i’m due in february with my first baby and i’m so excited you make me so comfortable. i like you 🥰
Thank you for sharing your experience! My daughter is 3 months. Omg I imagine not having to breastfeed will just change everything. I like breastfeeding but i’m going to be happy to “get my life back” at the same time. I’m going to have to go back to the office after we get past the Corona spike, and I don’t know what’s going to happen with feeding. My daughter does not want the bottle or pacifier either. The thought of me suddenly leaving her is absolutely terrifying. Even more so because she does not want the bottle. I wish we had one year maternity leave laws in US.
Watching you makes the tough things seem manageable 🙂 have you done anything on sleep training? I'll have to go back and look... I hope so because thats where I'm at right now🥴 keep the videos coming!
Thank you so much per usual! I adore your advice! My sons 6 months and not ready “yet” but when I go to ween him off I’ll be watching this again! Good luck with beautiful baby girl and keep being a ROCKSTAR MAMA!! 💖💖💖
I totally agree that offering the bottle and pacifier from the start is a good idea because I tried to avoid it in the beginning, but now my daughter won’t take them 😐
Oh my gosh you crack me up “OK listen people don’t do what I do, my son eats screws!” lol. Good advice!
Jessica, you are an amazing mom :) I'm a first time mom to be and i'm learning so much from your channel :) I'm due christmas xx
Right... I would say it's easy for you Jess because you know that you're getting another batch of breastmilk in a few months as you're expecting another baby LOL. My one and only baby is turning one next week. She's currently teething, having a cold, never slept through the night etc. Breastfeeding is still a big thing in our lives although we have been giving formula too for a long time. To cut the long story short, The plan was to stop at 12 months but I'm not sure if I want to stop!!! I'd never ever thought I'd say this 🙈🙈🙈🙈
Then don't stop! The WHO advises to breastfeed for AT LEAST two years... ;-)
You don't have to stop!!! I nursed baby #3 way past a year old--- you can continue until you or baby are ready to be done! I stopped right after a year with baby #4 just because I couldn't deal with thrush or mastitis and start another homeschooling year nursing so I stopped. Don't feel bad whatever you decide--- do what's best for you!!
Your the cutest human ever I loved listening to you and your parent life
“ I actually have 5 million kids” 😂😂😂 me with three and one on the way lol! Thanks for the video!! :)
Just realised I've been breastfeeding for 9 years straight. I have 4. My youngest is 2 1/2 and I'm ready to wean but he's not... I'm sad that I want to because it's my last baby but this is more security and comfort for him but I'm done now. Done. No more. I just wish he'd show no more interest so I don't feel sad about it.
Awww love this! Thanks for sharing!! I’m in the process of going cold turkey and your tips really helped!! Thank you!
Ah this is perfect! I’m planning to continue with my bub till a year too, so still have 5 months ish but I was genuinely thinking how do you even wean, I don’t understand how to even stop 😂🥴 thanks gf x
You are just so sweet! I just weaned my 17 mo old (really she weaned herself 😳) but I watched this anyway :) I'm pregnant and due in December! Excited for your little lady.
Please give me tips!!
Yes, weaning is more traumatic after 1 year. I gave my kids breast milk in a sippy cup, and provided lots of cuddles. Toddlers should get enough nutrition during the day...don’t need to eat at night.
When you mentioned not trusting the nipple confusion thing.. holy shit lol. My next baby will be able to take a bloody bottle lol. Almost 19 months of straight nursing lol no pacifier/ no bottle.. I'm so excited to wean 😆
Hey Jess! Did you deal with any engorgement while weaning Wilson? Any tips on how to make that more bearable? Thanks!
Cold packs really help!! When you’re in too much pain hand express just a little for comfort. Wear a snug sports bra and if you’re not feeding at all, Sudafed being the counter is amazing for drying you up.
Super helpful video! Thank you! 💖 My little guy turns 1 later this summer and I’m nervous and excited about weaning 🙃
You're doing so well Jess. Well done ✔ 👍
I love your videos Jess!
Sooo much fun to watch you!!! 😂😂❤❤❤❤
OMG! You are a strong girl! 😘❤️
Hi Jess! I’m a ftm and currently struggling with persistent nipple thrush. My daughter is 14 weeks old and my aim is to breastfeed her for a year but I don’t know if I can keep going with this thrush as it’s incredibly painful! How did you eventually get past it? I’m on meds etc which is helping but it’s so hard to get rid of. Her latch is great but I was on antibiotics twice early on which I think gave her oral thrush. 😔
I highly recommend Gentian Violet!! It’s over the counter and took about 3-4 weeks, but it worked! Little bit messy, but worth it. The stuff the dr gave us made it worse
Jacki Seymour oh that’s good to hear! What did your doctor give you that didn’t work? I just ordered it so will try it tomorrow. Do you take it off before you breastfeed or not?
My son is almost 8 months old and u just want him to stop breastfeeding at night!! He wakes up every 2 hours :( he is my third and LAST baby so that helps me get through the loooong nights
Is it possible for you to pump? So someone else can give him a bottle and you can get a full night's sleep every now and then
I cant even watch the video cause there is just so much unnecessary talking to get to the point ... nobody got time for that
Omg thank you :D
Is it ok to give nut milks? Do they have enough nutrients?
Also how did u avoid pain during weaning from being so full?
I need help weaning off breastmilk but my son refuses paci and bottles
Im nursing a 6 week old baby and already thinking about switching to formula. Its such a burden to nurse him.
I completely understand you. Baby is 6 weeks, won’t ever stop nursing, it’s basically a 24/7 thing. I don’t particularly find breastfeeding a “beautiful” or that much of a bonding experience (more power for those who do and enjoy it) but I’m set on doing it for at least 6 months but man, do I have doubts every day. Breastfeeding’s been hard from day one 🤦🏻♀️
It gets better over time, at least for me, it did.
Hi Jess, well done with weaning Wilson😘 i am about to start that process with my 7 month old soonish... I have a doubt about zje bottle taking issue. My son rejects every type of bottle. How did you give Eloise her milk back in the day? Just from a normal cup or glass?
Does your son take a pacifier? If he does he might just not like the 'nipple' of the bottle. What I'm trying to say it might not be the bottle but the nipple. Could also be that if he knows you're there he's like nope mom not gonna happen, I want the real deal.
Over time my son preferred the bottle and he's somewhat okay with drinking out of a cup. It's just really messy and seeing as your son is only seven months old he might not be ready for that. Very easy to take too big of a sip and choke a little.
Being a parent truly is learning on the job. The easiest part is finding out what doesn't work🙈
Just want to add, for me personally it's a big no no letting a small child/baby drink out of glass. It wouldn't be the first or last time we have accidents and the bottle or cup ends up on the floor. That's a disaster waiting to happen.
@@-Annn- hahaha that is so true Angela. Thanks for your answer. I think the point is he still prefers the real deal, doesn't take a pacifier either... Yeah you're right, i'll try to avoid glasses for the moment. By the way I am a german mom, writing from Germany. I have found a lot of support on American RUclips channels 😁👍 greetings over the ocean!
I know this is old. But how interesting! Trying to wean my 11 mo old and he is also becoming more obsessed with his binkies while I got rid of daytime feeds!
I soo wish I had given a Pacifier in the beginning too!!! I'm currently trying to wean a 2 1/2 year old 😭🙈
I feel like my son is constantly teething and he's almost 16 months. But as of the last week he doesn't allow me to unlatch without biting me a bit. So I've been trying to SLOWLY wean. Mainly because I'm not ready to let it go. I still really like that time but trying to figure out this recent biting thing. Any suggestions?
Did you warm the cows milk up before giving it to him? My baby boy turns one next week and also starts daycare so we are struggling on trying to wean!
I do! My son prefers warm drinks over cold drinks. You don't have to, just see what he likes
You don't have to but you can! They don't even need cow's milk if they're getting enough nutrients from their food. So do what's best for your baby! :)
And how for an egzample to stop baby from breastfeeding or from pumping without having clogged breasts . DId you just stpop and milk stopped producing within few days ?Thanks!
Noooo, you have to do it slowly or you can get mastitis. I’ve had it 3 times and it’s not fun at all! How long it takes to wean depends on how much milk you are making.
@@nanaronhano337 yes slowly is always better.
Cant wait for the next video!
Love your videos!! Thank you for creating your channel ☺️
Can you share the link to the video you used to have featured that was a funny commentary on how everyone tells moms what to do and how it's all contradictory?
Thank you so much!
Hey ! I shall be really grateful if you answer to my question which really concern me badly ! My baby is 8 mo old now she refuse to take bottle still. She took bottle first 30 days after her birth with breast feeding but suddenly she refused to take it I tried many bottles with different shapes of nipples but she cried alot .
I am really worried what to do now. I really want to switch on bottle as it is really difficult for me to carry on !!!!!
I am so upset.
Jessica how did you do to keep your milk supply at night after your baby turns 6 months and sleeps through the night. Do you pump? Or how do you avoid the plugged ducts?
Your body adjusts I think you can just not pump because you’ll keep getting engorged. What I did was I just slept it was painful for a couple of days but after a couple of days your body realizes you don’t need much at night anymore. You’ll leak as well but it gets better. Clogged ducts I would do epsom salt inside the Hakka with warm water and it got them right out
Hey!! I am trying to wean off my baby but I see a size difference in my breasts- any tips or suggestions??? Please help!
Hi Jess!! ❤️
You had a really pretty nursing bra and now I can't find the video you linked it in 😭
First😘
What was your friend advise about winning now and not later on? Is there a time when babiy attaches more to mommy?
Babies get super attacked after like 14 months. It becomes such a part of their routine and comfort that it’s much harder to stop. They can always start getting demanding and throw fits if you don’t give them the milk.
Anna Noronha thank you for the info
How much cows milk are you offering Wilson?
And on a related note, how do you get your child used to cow's milk (or any other type of milk for that matter) when all they take is breastmilk? My baby has refused straight cow's milk.
Screws 😳😬
NajahtaagNjHTj uy🧡🧡🧸
Does this ever get to the point? Geez waste of my time.
Omg!!! I knew the Jess Hover name sounded familiar!! I’ve been following you on Facebook for about a year and a half now! Wow this is crazy!! So so cool how I found your RUclips channel!! I didn’t even know you had a RUclips channel. 🤍🌈🦋✨
Watching you just to discover that to replaced the breastfeeding with pacifier…🫠🫠🫠
