Not certain, but I think the quick rise of New Jack Swing (Janet Jackson, Bobby Brown, etc.) in the late 80's sort of displaced it, and then it didn't come back. It's a shame, because it really is good stuff. Chromeo gets close in the past decade, but nothing really matches the authentic music from that time.

I would describe this as a "bridge song". Meaning,back when it came out in 1986 it appealed to the funk listeners of the 70s and was also liked by the newer hip hop heads at the time. This song bridged those two eras of listeners.

Cameo Shake Your Pants, Is my personal favorite by them...
Brilliant song. Probably their best, but they had a lot of great jams along these lines. Muscular Electrofunk with beats that hit like Mike Tyson, Space Age synthesizers, and Spaghetti Western flourishes inspired by the soundtrack work of Italian composer, Ennio Morricone (like the whistle sound in "Word Up" [1986/US#6, UK#3] that echoes his 1968 theme from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly".
You should also check out "She's Strange" (1984/US#47, UK#37), "Single Life" (1985/UK#15), "Candy" (1986/US#21, UK#27), and "Back and Forth" (1987/US#50, UK#11). They had other great jams besides those, as well, and had been on the scene from the mid-70s through the late 90s, and they appeared on the Mariah Carey hit "Loverboy" (2002/US#2, UK#12).
They were one of the better 80s Funk acts, as well as one of the most successful. It was definitely in the same family as Prince, but those beats hit hard like Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, former Prince/The Time associates who went on to produce/cowrite pretty much all of Janet Jackson's hits, as well as tons of other 80s-90s R&B/New Jack Swing artists.
Another artist with huge hitting Electrofunk beats from the mid-80s was Jody Watley. After cutting her teeth on several Electroboogie and Post-Disco hits with Shalamar (an LA band that were much bigger in the UK), Jody Watley went solo, and briefly threatened to share Janet Jackson's crown. "Looking for a New Love" (1987/US#2, UK#13) "Don't You Want Me?" (1987/US#6, UK#77//NOT a cover of The Human League synthpop classic from 1981), "Some Kind of Lover" (1988/US#10), "Real Love" (1989/US#2, UK#31).
I remember buying this when it came out, I still have it on vinyl single, that's how long ago it was lol. Still love the beat now just as much as I did back then.
