Young man, full of big plans
And thinkin' about tomorrow
Young man, gonna make a stand
You beg, you steal, you borrow
You beg, you steal, you borrow

"...so quick to take to grain....like some old mule."
I'm 62. Still haven't taken to grain
I heard this song while waiting in the dentist's office and I *HAD* to look it up. This man's voice is beautiful; it's like a whisper-rasp that kind of reminds me of fog... But it also sounds like melted, slippery butter. Whew! 🙌🏽
Excellent descriptors. You should be a sommelier!
@@Gr8Layks Aw, thank you. 😅❤️
And he sounds the same live as recorded in a studio. Amazing.
Listen to it after the dentist..much more enjoyable
@@DC-lj3if I’ve been listening to it ever since. 😊 I’m in love with it.
Neil Young wrote Old Man and Ray writes a song about a young man. Somebody's got to write a song about middle age and I'd say we've got life covered.
I think Stevie Nick's Landslide covers that
Everytime I listen to this song it takes me somewhere...but never the same place twice.
I heard this song about 15 years ago when I was in my early 20s. I moved from California to New York city 4 days ago. I packed my shit and I got on a plane headed for the next chapter of my life. This song kinda says it all.
Good luck and God bless. 🙏
😎🌴😀
15 years ago... I was 23 living out of my car (by choice) in the mountains of Colorado when I heard this on a local sunday morning radio show. It fit right in with where I was at that time in my life and introduced me to Ray's music. Never regretted a moment of those years I spent roaming. Life surely changes.
This song resonates with me WAY more than I'd like to admit.
I hear ya..
@our very weird world Legal complications?
Yeah me too. It hits me deep, into the depths of my soul. One of those rare songs that is so fucking great that it is hard to listen to.
Doesn't it!!! A friend of mine introduced me to Ray through this song. It is a hidden Diamond! Simple sounding but intricate, changes throughout the whole song. I like the use of the Peddle guitar, Steal 🎸! Shalom World
Find your legs and stay gone
This uber-cool song just shuffles along with Ray's whisper-growl vocals. One of the best songs of the past 10 years I think.
Agree
This is my FAVORITE SONG and I love music! I drove through Utah to Wyoming and I played this song and WOW...what a beautiful song to go with all the colors of the west! Love it!
omg it's so weird you said that. I go to Wyoming and Utah at least once a year just to take in the scenery and enjoy the west, and I always play this song on repeat to set the mood. That and Old Man by Neil Young. Glad I'm not the only one!!
@@opassatravels Right on Frankie! Safe Travels!
All American 😉
I was born in Colorado and made a trip out there a few years ago when my beloved 90 year old grandma passed away. I was sitting in a car in front of her house, next to the house where l was born. My grandma and her house was my sanctuary, where the world couldn't get me.
This song came on the radio while l was sitting there, and it was the first time l ever heard it. Before l knew it l had tears pouring down my face. I knew my life was never going to be the same. No grandma, and no sanctuary. I was the polar opposite of the character in the song...l would have given anything to be back in my hometown, among the small talk and the chatter. I escaped it and found nothing. Nothing.
Definitely check out the rest of the album if you’ve never done that.
This is a masterpiece..that voice
"One of these days it's gonna be right soon; you'll find your legs and go, and stay gone."
"Howlin' at the moon like a slack-jawed fool"
The layering of the various guitars is just beautiful !
In my mind this is what America is best at. Great song!
jspope2008 .... it's not just in your mind.
Something pretty magical about Ray's music. I could listen (and I have) to this song on a loop. 💛
Agree!
Ray's been listening to his Joni Mitchell albums. It's soooo nice!
This and the song” ramblings of a lunatic” are what drive me to be better then I was handed and not fall as my father did these songs give me hope that I can make my own fate
Right on🎉
OG here. At any point of your life you care to pick, the opinions of co-workers and other strangers will be worth precisely a pitcher of warm spit. I'm no big deal. But because I "followed my heart" and BELIEVED in these few things/concepts, they came to me. The girl, the house, the dog(s), the bike, the career and more, all because I didn't GAF what others thought. And surprise, surprise, guess what? In that era acting like you big-time didn't gaf would get you noticed by the girls with sparkle in their eyes.
Think about it this way. When Prince Rogers Nelson was born, there was no "slot" waiting for him in the music business or the movie industry. He had nothing to make himself stand out, seemingly, as a 5'2" Black American born in the Rust Belt. But he believed in himself and his music to the extent that one of his nicknames would end up being "His Royal Badness." 'Nuff Ced.
Now go be great in YOUR way.
Gotta love that twangy guitar just meandering in the background.
This was the song that got me hooked on this band. I can't remember how I first heard it, but I bought the album. Then I bought albums for friends.
He is one of my favorite male vocalists. Ranks up there with Robert plant and the phariah dogs are awesome.
The only reason I don't mind going to work, is the fact that I can hear this song every day, over the PA system.
Dang, you're lucky. I have to listen to a 90s playlist, and not even the good stuff, either lol
As I stare down my 52nd spin around the sun - I am feeling kinda sad. Things have changed in a blink of an eye. I cannot catch my breath from the shock. #covidsuxs #2020suxs
Nicely put... : )
This one rattled around in my head today. Took me a minute or two to remember Ray's name so I could find it here on the YT. So glad we have the interwebs so that whenever we have an earworm, we can placate the brain quickly.
I could listen to this song all day. Beautiful!
This song just hits home...i just turn the volume up and roll the windows down and enjoy the vibe!
great songwriter and lyrics. I can hear the struggle in his voice and some exceptional slide. Glad to partially claim him as "Maine's own."
What's sad is the number of equally talented souls who'll never be heard.
I could swear that this was a Joni Mitchell song redone... great tune!
Matt Cottom I know just a classic sound done so well 😊
Yes!
There's also a lot of Neil Young influence. Fantastic song.
I thought the same for the longest time. Heard it occasionally, but couldn't catch damn DJ say anything about song or about RAY at any point. If JONI MITCHELL didn't do it, she should HAVE. GREAT SONG, NO MATTER WHO. Both artists great in their own way.
I looked it up thinking the same thing!! Lyric and phrasing are so similar...
I discovered Ray LaMontagne not long ago and he is now one of my favorites. I think Big Boned Woman is also one that makes me smile he has so many good recordings but my most favorite is We'll make it through. Fabulous.
Ray sings so diverse...totally dig his music!
Reminds me of my Dad.
You know, it's been two years now, I think. It reminds me of me, now. I'm a young man full of big plans just trying to figure out where I am in life. A hard job, alone.
Ray don't ever stop making songs please !
Why doesn't he play more songs like this. The whole bluesy "Trouble" thing is not at all as arresting as this.
I can't stop listening to this song.
The guitar makes me melt! Beautiful 🎯
In my opinion one of the best song of our time
It was nominated for Best song of the year... I can't remember what year exactly
Voice, music, beautiful.
Wow.
THE BEST.
💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙💙...
Love to put him and Grace Potter on the same venue, Whooaaaaaaaaa, wortht eh price of admission right there, and maybe throw in Samantha Fish as well?
I get a Tim Hardin vibe from this song, especially from the bass. It's got that same climb that If I Were A Carpenter has.
Awesome song
Loved this from the first time I heard it👍
I so much hear Buffalo Springfield in this amazing work.
Great song
A real.great.song
Flawless.....
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
music was made for this song
Sounds like a theme song from an early 60s road movie. black and white, dusty. Warren Beatty, Tuesday Weld. Somebody should have made that movie. I would have watched it.
See you soon Ray!
He's got a beautiful voice!
I repeatedly heard this song on KHUM in Ferndale, CA. There were testimonies on the radio that you were a native of this area. Regardless the realitiesof these claims, the theme of this song got me through hard times in Eureka, CA
I have this album on vinyl...sounds absolutely jaw-dropping on my Rega RP8 'table!
Wait to heard it in digital - it's fabulous !
I have it in lossless digital through a set of Neumann KH 120 studio monitors....jaw dropping as well.
I am soJealous! Vinyl sounds so warm and emotive.
My dad loved this song nostalgia at its finest
Yes. It was him, right there, that done it.
Great sound, everyone should be listening to Ray.
It's just so good. Well done in every way. Thank you.
🎉❤
I love every one of your songs, the depth of your soul, your loving heart, your understanding of life, heartbreak, and love, your creative mind, your musical sense, and every single word you speak. Ray, you are the best of the best! Thank you so much for sharing your talents with us! We appreciate and respect you so much. Keep the music coming.
I saw you both of the nights you were at the Count Basie Theater, in Red Bank, NJ this fall. You mentioned that you were going to drop a new album soon. I can't wait to hear it. Be well. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Stephanie Claus I agree he's very talented and his voice is amazing.
What An Amazing Songwriter.
This song brings back good memories of working with my father at a young age watching him work his guts out to provide for the ones he loved which I now do also….this always has and always will be my favourite song.
Sounds a LOT like some early Dan Fogelberg stuff... Like his Home Free album!
TOTALLY!!!!
❤❤❤❤❤ I love you Ray oh my your the best ❤️
The most moving and inspirational song and lyrics I have ever heard..Fantastic and Thank you !!
Ray's the Man. Love his music so much. It touches me beach house warm it really does.
Yesss
First heard this great song on WMNF-FM (Tampa) in 2013. It was one of those songs that blew me away the very first time I heard it.

Awesome song😊
I love this song 💝
Perfect....
Love this so much
Great song.
Sounds like joni mitchell or did she play this song too?
Wonderful native beat❤️
Doesn't it sound like All of us way back then in the Neil Young years.
lots of love Ray!!!
I keep hearing this on the Vinyl Experience had to see what's what.
So your home town's bringing you down
Are you drowning in the small talk
And the chatter
Or you gonna step into line like your daddy done
Punching the time and climbing life's long ladder
You've been howling at the moon like a slack jaw fool
And breaking every rule they can throw on
But one of these days it's gonna be right soon
You'll find your legs and go and stay gone
Young man full of big plans and thinking about tomorrow
Young man going to make a stand
You beg, steal you borrow
You beg you steal you borrow
Well all the friends that you knew in school
They used to be so cool and they just bore you
Well look at them now, already pulling the plow
So quick to take to grain like some old mule
Young man full of big plans and thinking about tomorrow
Young man going to make a stand
You beg, steal you borrow
You beg you steal you borrow
Dreaming of the day
You're gonna pack your bags
Put the miles away
Oh, just grab your girl and go
Where no one knows you
What will all the old folks say?
So the home town's bringing you down
Are you drowning in the small talk and the chatter?
Or you gonna step into line like your daddy done
Punching the time and climbing life’s long ladder
Young man full of big plans and thinking about tomorrow
Young man going to make a stand
You beg, steal you borrow
You beg you steal you borrow
Thanx so much for the lyrics
Rays our gen of dan fogelberg or Jackson Browne
I have to return some video tapes
are you gonna step into line like ya daddy done?
Or are you gonna drown in the small talk and the chatter?
I swear I thought this was a Joni Mitchell cover. I mean that in the most complimentary way possible.
Doug Sarbon Couldn't be a compliment greater than this. Joni is a goddess
Still an insult.
herderp. my nom is idriwzrd, imma dolt.
Doug Sarbon
I thought the SAME thing!!
but JONI did hardly use a back beat like this one has.
So your home town's bringing you down
Are you drowning in the small talk and the chatter?
Are you gonna step into line like your daddy done

Thank you for adding these wonderful lyrics to this awesome song, a job very well done thank you for doing this for us my fiancé, Lia used to listen to the song all the time, it reminded her of us just before she died at the young age of 37. I think of her every day still and I miss her just as much

Young gifted man with big plans.....Grabbed a girl and set out. Did well until life's tidal waves crashed in. Now, old man with no plans. No family, prospects.
I thought it was a New Seekers cover.
Total joni Mitchell
Mrowwwwareeow guitar effects
I would bet that he's influenced by Neil Young.
1970 AND 1971 NATIONAL CHAMPION AND 1972 BIG EIGHT CHAMPION NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS!!!! 1973 BIG EIGHT CHAMPION, 1974 AND 1975 NATIONAL CHAMPION OKLAHOMA SOONERS!!!!
it says beg borrow or steal a 1937 film. Then shows this video?! I got mad at falseness and gave it a thumbs down. If you got something good you don't have to Lie about it. (or whoever the lier is)?
my life minus the stealing. i didnt want to be a hobo, but mental illness is a bitch.
